Raiders unload Javon Walker, Greg Ellis
The worst contract in the history of free agency is no longer active.
The Raiders finally cut Javon Walker Monday and dumped defensive end Greg Ellis while they were at it, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Walker was named the biggest free agent bust ever by the NFL Network, and we can't disagree. His contract was particularly egregious because it was obvious in 2007 Walker had nothing left physically. The guy was benched for Glenn Martinez in Denver.
(I actually wrote a post at the time in my former life calling it the worst contract ever. Blind squirrels, nuts, and all that.)
Oakland paid Walker $21 million over the last two years and got 15 catches in return. He may wind up in someone's camp this year, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he's played his last regular season snap.
Ellis actually started his Raiders career well enough, but knee troubles slowed him down late in the season.

Agreed
Don’t forget about that one quarterback guy and Gerard Warren!

Do you think the Raiders will bring in another veteran QB RRS?
Gradkowski is coming off major injury and Russell is well Russell so I sure would like to see someone else brought in.
Good Question
I’d like to bring in somebody. In the free agency thread, I was talking about going after David Carr or picking up Shaun Hill if he’s released by the 49ers since they signed Carr.
If it was up to me, I’d cut Russell first. Then, I’d look into signing someone like a Shaun Hill to back up Bruce Gradkowski. I’d then sign a young quarterback or perhaps even draft someone to be behind them both.

Shaun Hill would be a nice pickup; probably comes cheap, too
But we’re not cutting Jamarcus! You know this as well as I do!

Hill is interesting
no arm strength but he has some accuracy for the short stuff and he’s won some games as a starter behind an awful offensive line.
It’s a thin group this year for FA QB’s. I wonder if maybe taking a flyer on someone like Derek Anderson if he comes free might be worth it. He had that one big season a couple of years ago.
As far as JaMarcus I think 85% would love to see him go and with the way the salary structure works this year it’s the time to do it but I doubt it’ll happen.
I can totally see Derek Anderson becoming a Raider
much like the Kitna experiment. Similar guy, and he seems to be as good as any of the guys we have, and could even compete with Gradkowski perhaps, though Gradkowski has the team behind him right now.

Cut Russell and save 10 million, invaluable time, and sufferng
Draft Dan LeFevour and let Grad run the team till Danny Boy is ready to take the helm.

Russel's
cap hit is 13 million, and if we cut him before camp, we only owe him 3! Thrw his ass out!

Sorry, unless I wasn't clear
I agree, throw the bum out and get us some football players.

I'm a little surprised by the Ellis move
I thought he brought some leadership to the team. May have to move DE up on the priority list a bit.
Walker was dead weight in every sense of the word though, good riddance finally. Al was too stupid to dump him when he had the chance when Walker offered to retire & give back his signing bonus.

Defensive End
It does become a bit more of a need even though I think I’d be okay with Seymour and Shaughnessy each starting at their respective spot. I wouldn’t rule out Scott starting there or even Richardson, but I could see us drafting one in the first or second round to push for a starting job. Look for names like Jason Pierre-Paul and Carlos Dunlap, a few names I’m sure we’ve all seen before on mock drafts going to us with the eighth pick.

agreed
shaughnessy showed some real toughness out there when he got snaps and richardson is great against the run. im not to worried about the parting of greg ellis because it seemed like every 3rd game hed miss to drain that damn knee of his

Good!
Javon wasnt being used and Ellis was getting old.
If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?

Yeya!!! lets get it Crunk....Wait!!! why was Ellis released? WTF!! He could've been good Depth.
I gues its cuz he doesn’t look handsome!!! Damn Al!!

Depth
We can get that for a cheaper price. With Shaughnessy, Seymour and Richardson, we can sign a cheap veteran or draft a defensive end. We already have four if Scott is moved back.

The long national nightmare is over! It’s morning in Oakland again! I can’t rag on Javon too much. He knew he couldn’t go anymore, and even tried to give the money back and retire before Uncle Al in his infinite wisdom talked him out of it. If a crazy old man in a silver and black jumpsuit backed a Brinks truck full of cash up to my door I’d probably take advantage of it too. I wasn’t keen on the signing of Ellis in the first place so him leaving isn’t much of a loss either. A few more cuts and we’re looking good for the future.
WOW.
Al has SHOCKED ME. He ACTUALLY cut Walker!! Great!!
Ellis though, really surprised me. The guy did serve as a leader. I remember I think it was Tyvon addressing the fact that Greg Ellis had a website of just tape available for the players to study and such. However, I understand the move, and with Trevor Scott, Shaughnessy, Richardson, and Seymour as the DEs, I can see why this move was made, especially with injuries.
Raider Nation needed this…especially after the Routt tendering.

If Greg Ellis was cut then almost any of the worse players (except Jamarcuss and Stanford) may be cut at any moment
I liked Ellis – he played well for us while he was here.
by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 8, 2010 6:56 PM PST up reply actions
I did too.
And yes, you are right. These latest tenderings, cutting, and such have shown everybody in the Raider organizaion that ANY decision can be made.

Keep em coming...
I can think of a lot more cuttings I would like to see! FUck em all, forget the high priced free agents, lets draft well and build our team the correct freaking way for once!

Hey Javon...
Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

But, I enjoyed your verse much more

I thought Al Davis was going keep that dude forever......
lol it’s about time he trashed the biggest free agent bust now all we need to do is get rid of Jamarcus Russell :)
"Commitment to Delusion" - This is what raider nation has become! lol
javon is laughing at al davis on his way to the bank
why did al talk him out of retiring to leave him inactive for like 12 games last year?
