That 1st pick: Which "Position upgrade" improves us most

Over the past decade, Raider hierarchy failed with its first draft pick 60% of the time (only Huff '06, Gallery '04, Asomugha '03, and Janikowski '00 can be considered successes). During the same decade, Oakland's draft picks got better after the celebrated and hyped 1st selection.

Most of you know who the big name draftees are, where they played and even their combine metrics - well and good. But right now, let's just decide where our biggest need is and determine the single positional upgrade that would do more for us than any other? Then, we'll determine the best prospects in that single position and bring the best one to Oakland. The Focus here is only on the 1st pick - #8 on April 22nd.

Poll
What single position upgrade will improve us most?

LB

We really could use an all around anchor/presence/personality to bring our D together. We’ve never gone out and picked up a monster for the middle and theres no way around having that beast to keep our D and offenses in check. Last year we saw houston come alive thanks to picking a good lb and cincinati too. U cant deny it…

with all the shit seattle has been doing these past few days

what kinda trade would it take to get lofa tatupa down here. i would love a straight up tuff samoan guy in the middle. oakland needs some more gritty samoans, come on tyson in the 3rd!

i hated missing rey last year!

you know he would of been a bad ass raider, coming from eureka! still pissed. at the senior bowl oakland had koa misi eared down hes gotta be SAMOAN PRIDE! i know hes an DE/OLB he is built to jump in the middle. 6’3 250. from santa rosa, gotta have some fight in him but college in utah means hes got discipline. might be a 4th round sleeper

I believe this will be unanimously DT

but I wonder why OT and C was left out too? I’d still answer DT, even though I think the first pick should go on OT, simply because the best 8 pick worthy guy that will be there will be one of the remaining tackles. After Okung, there’s not many I’m 100% on, but I’ll take my chances, or trade down and take Brian Price in the first. Get Brandon Spikes in the second.

You could argue that we’d play much better with a better MLB, both on the line and at every other defensive position, but get us a true NT to eat up two gaps consistently, and watch how good our existing lbs will look. I still say upgrade at DT, MLB, and OT first, in the order in which the best players are to be taken as available at those three.

I think its a toss up between OT-C-G (any OLineman), MLB, DT, it will depend on who is left when we get to our pick…..UNLESS we trade up to specifically get someone. I like Suh and I guess McClain as MLB.

I would trade up and take Suh or McCoy

and leaning towards taking McCoy for some reason, I haven’t exactly put my finger on it yet. McClain would be awesome, but I’m getting the feeling Al won’t be looking to fill that position, or very hard at McClain with that pick. Think he might be eyeballing a different guy at the spot; perhaps a late, or at least later than 2nd round sleeper. Angerer, maybe?

DT is the biggest need (of those mentioned)

When the team played better run defense we had a lunch-pail type guy in Jon Parella & Sam Adams who was a space-eater. They made the linebackers’ jobs alot easier. While Morrison made be considered overrated keep in mind he has never had two pro-bowl caliber DTs in front of him in the 4 years he’s been with the team. If he had something like the Williams brothers in front of him I’m sure he may have had much better production.

by animal.feed on Mar 9, 2010 6:22 PM PST reply actions

Stop the bleeding?

Dude if you watched us play last year you would see we leak everywhere like and 90 year old man on ST Pattys day. The D is not just the only issue. We may fix it with a healthy OLine this year but I think we should draft whoever is available at the need positions we have in OL, DL and LB.

Where is OL?

I’d pick OL, but out of these choices I have to say MLB. Especially if McClain is there. There are plenty of great DTs in the draft that we can take.

But first.....

Trade Morrison to the pats, in exchange for a second rounder. Please? Pretty Please?

Hey sorry but im resorting to %

We’ve all seen all pro tackles on both sides of the line as well as de’s and te’s come from later rounds…we have also seen lots of avg and floppy players of those positions come from high rounds were as the percent of flop to game breaking LB’s from the first round is much lower, great lbs make everyone better.

Ahhh Damn!

I want a mulligan lol I accidently voted for QB. Personally, Its way to hard for me to decide. There is so much talent in the 2nd and 3rd round I almost wanna trade our 8 pick for two 2nds. But, If I had to choose. It would have to be Corner. Theres crazy talent in the 2nd,3rd and maybe even 4th a LB. An OT can be picked up in the 3rd and a DT can be picked up in the 2nd 3rd or 4th

I put DT

but can we find another good DT in the second round? Im kind of stuck on several positions…

Linebacker- i feel we can get another talented linebacker in other rounds but McClain is very tempting

Tackle- yes our offensive line is shaky but we a couple that could already that play fine just need to be a bit more consistant but I can be wrong and an improvement on the offensive line cant hurt.

DT- we HAVE to stop the run and we havent for a while but like i said can we find a good DT later?

CB- I did not think of this position really but then what about Eric Berry? Yes he is a safety but they have said he can play any defensive back position. He’s big, fast, can jump really hi, imagine having two shutdown corners? Nhamdi and Berry, than Johnson and maybe Mitchell. because Routt is a fuck up and i wish he was gone or something.

Point Blank the Raiders BIGGEST NEED in this draft with the first round pick is

LEFT TACKLE!!!! None of the other players at that position will last more than 2 maybe 3 more years, this draft offers a wealth of talent at that position this year and we would have to be nuts to ignore that…Forget every recommendation given to vote on, Please!!! are you kidding me…Last year I said we need to pick up Mike Vick, people cried, yet he is a former All Pro, now we live with 3 mediocre QB’s and don’t talk that wildcat mess if you have never opened a playbook. Vick is NOT a wildcat QB, he is a QB that can run. There are four Left Tackles that would fit right in at the 8th pick…1. Russell Okung, Oklahoma State, 2. Anthony Davis, Rutgers 3. Treat Williams, Oklahoma 4. Selvish Capers, West Virginia. Bryan Bulaga, Iowa has what I call “Robert Gallery Syndrone”, his arms are too short to be an NFL Tackle and he will be moved to Guard. However, I really like Anthony Davis from Rutgers, but if any of these guys are on the board and we don’t select one, if further shows that Al has lost his mind. Second round we can look at the above positions and in the third though I think it is a little high, but if Tebow is on the Board, I would draft him, unless there is another player that should have been a first rounder but slipped through the cracks. Tebow will be winner in the NFL, he works too hard not to be, and he knows how to win…. Though he is not ready, he will bust his but to get ready, something J-Russ seems to have a problem with…

by Rodney Sacramento on Mar 9, 2010 7:23 PM PST reply actions

Tebow is not disenfranchised enough

Al imagines himself as the savior of lost souls (he doesn’t care about the players, only about his self-perception). Tebow is not among them. Unless Al thinks that he can convert him to Judaism.

Only 1 may be chosen to fill the single most vulnerable position - do you truly believe that any of the OTs, Gs, or Cs

(with Okung certainly gone by the time we pick) would positively impact our team as much as the best available DT or MLB?

by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 9, 2010 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

No doubt, because quite frankly, Andrew Davis, may be better than Okung, and Treat Williams

is on par with them..This is the best Tackle class in years and if you want to win you have to block..Last Super Bowl win, Art Shell was tackle All Pro every year with Gene Upshaw next to him…It is time to get the Tackle of the future while he is there to draft. Even Capers is a great tackle, I didn’t mention Campbell because he is a second round pick, and if he is there with our second pick, I would get him also…Now both tackles of the future are on the roster… You do make good points, but we need to give our QB’s the ability to stand there and make plays…ie Peyton Manning..And we cannot do that with the line we have now.

by Rodney Sacramento on Mar 9, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

we made this mistake in the 04 draft

its a crap shoot with olinemen making the transition from college to the pros, but i wouldnt complain taking the chance on one vs. another rb,qb,wr, or safety in the first.

that was my impression. The scouts are blowing smoke over these linemen - they move like robots (and not the new

IF Tebow is there in the 5th (I doubt it) roll the dice and take a chance on him. He has athletic talent. I dont care if you are male/female/shemale/wanna be a male/use to be a female/gay/straight/bible thumper/whatever I am an equal opportunity bigot I hate everyone on the same level. None of the above

We need O line more than any other position. Let us all remember all three qb’s going down due to injury and JP freaking Losman coming in. We are in a QB driven, offensive league now, and if the QB can’t stand up for more than 3 seconds then we are royally screwed.

Other than that, MLB, and DT are the next on the list.

Kristick, unanimous All Pac10 LB in 2008, 2009

Raiders are famous for finding defensive players that are smart, talented, nasty and a bit weird. Villipiano, Hendricks, Millen, Tatum, Atkinson and Long come to mind. The knock on Kristick is that he lacks prototypical size for a LB (he’s 6’3" 235), too slow at (ran 4.64 @ combine and 4.61 at pro day). Closing speed and FB geometry is also off the charts. High character and motor (was nominated to both the Bednarik and Lott award).

Late 3rd round pick. Lots of “quiet” interest in this 21yr old around the league.

Ok the biggest NEED we have is none of those on the list. Its clearly right tackle

We need someone opposite Mario Henderson (one of the only project players who have turned out to be a good player along with branch) to hold down where cornell greens awful ass was at.

Next need i think we have is a tie between corner and DT(particulrly nose). At the no. 8 pick if we go tackle then at our 2nd rounder there should be players like terrence cody, kyle wilson, cam thomas, and brandon ghee available. If all those guys are there, Id take wilson.

After those needs, I would say linebacker, hopefully a mauler who can move morrison to outside.

ALTHOUGH I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU, lets remember now who is making the picks...

Its good ole’ Al Davis. Size and speed are a premium. And with that, and the release of Greg Ellis, there is a spot open for a guy by the name of Jason Pierre Paul. Huge and fast and outrageously athletic fits the “Al Davis type pick” mold for sure.

To go along with that pick, in the 2nd rounder we have a guy by the name of Bruce Campbell (who very well could be there), an RT who ran a 4.85 forty at the combine. Again, a HUGE project player, but he fits a need and fits the typical height/weight/speed mold that al davis wants.

by posey440 on Mar 9, 2010 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

You are right on Davis, and if he goes that way, we will continue to get our asses kicked

period..Because our Offensive line especially Tackle is WEAK…And no blocking, no wins…If Campbell is there in the second I would take him, even after taking a tackle in the first…I would have to look for diamonds in the rough with the later picks..And if Tebow is on the board I say it again, i would take him 3rd or 4th round…

By the way, Dick Butkus proved you can have the greatest Linebacker in the league

and can’t win the division, let alone the championship..If you want to win, we need to score, our D is not that bad, given time to rest and being motivated by a scoring offense they would stop teams all the time. If we scored, we’d win the division, because our Defense is not great, but they are not bums either, we have a running game, and with blocking and maybe a receiver that won’t drop the ball we would put up numbers and win games…O line, or we go 5-11, 6-10…mark my words…

by Rodney Sacramento on Mar 9, 2010 8:56 PM PST reply actions

I voted for DT because I want our lines to get stronger

but if I had a choice it would be an offensive tackle for the right side. I think part of our defense’s problem in stopping the run is our offenses inability to get off the field and maintain a consistant running game. I’d also like to see if Grad can make it through the season with a better o-line, otherwise he will be running for his life.

Huff showed some improvement last season

but I’m not sure you can say he’s proven himself yet and Gallery was drafted to be a stud left tackle and he’s turned into a serviceable guard so I see that pick as being alright but nothing to brag about.

As far as this draft goes it’s hard to know exactly who’ll be available with the pick but I would lean towards the defensive tackle position if the player available matches the spot. If not then try and trade down and grab an extra pick or two.

First at #8

Without a doubt, my vote would be an offensive lineman! The quarterback(s) need time to establish, read-react, throw, etc.; which is not happening with our team. Plus, because the defense is on the field so quickly and soooooo long for lack of offensive-play, it is hard to determine where the true deffensive faults lie, other than with the play of Stanford. …Also, rodeosnake12 and Tramp it is fu##ing weak to try and get a laugh at someone else’s expense when you’re hidden behind a curtain/computer. Mclain is the player that would have the biggest impace for us imo

Mclain has been described as Saban on the field and in regards to DT, I thought Kelly was solid last season (not worth the money he is being paid but solid) Seymour will play end on passing downs and DT against the run and Bryant, a high quality prospect imo, should get quality reps.
With Kirk being given a 3rd round tender Mr Davis is baiting another team to offer and collect the 3rd round pick which in a very deep draft is smart especially knowing that he can draft Mclain or even trade up to pick Spikes if required.
Ideally we keep Kirk and draft Mclain anyway but i guess we will see what happens.

Having said that I thing if you could guarantee a high quality LT in the first round with Brandon Spikes in the second or trading up for him I think that would be the perfect draft scenario.

Offense

I’d rather see them draft an offensive lineman. I think the defense will improve if they can stay off the field for a while. Our offense can’t hold a sustained drive. And just to add one point, I don’t like them cutting Fargus.

My Dilemma

We really need a guy who can be a potential franchise quarterback, but I don’t see one in this draft. Jimmy Claussen (if he falls) might be worth a risk at #8.

I put DT on the poll, because I think we can get an impact DT at #8. The problem is the 1st round worthy DTs may be gone by the time we pick.

I say we take the best player on the board because we simply need help everywhere.

best player on the board????????????

we can use every mock idea who we will take. i really think defense players are goona get drafted 1st. the draft is heavy on d players. who will be there, its hard to say with the unknown factor. 3 teams that need qbs are seattle and washington and clevland. so as i see we have the good chance of landing a good d tackle/lb. thats the hardest part of being at #8 this year, who is the best dt-lb at 8

Agreed that "best player on the board" applies only between DT or MLB. The DT everyone wants (like the OT everyone wants)

will be gone by 8. It’s different with the LBs … they’re likely to be all there for us to select from.

I found a guy we could take with the first.... ;) at 6'6 330 a great prospect.

This guy looks like he can handle NT’s all by himself, and has Raider written all over him…

nice to lay out options

of OL that will come later in rounds. It means that we can get good OL deeper in the draft if we wanted to. Still, Anthony Davis or Bruce Cambell are my picks in the 1st.

We need so many things....

Especially both sides of the trenches…

I’d like an OT or NT… we also need a run stopping MLB…

I like Rolondo McClain but rumor has it on PFT that he ran a 4.74 forty time… I hope Al can look past that

History is too strong (especially with Al Davis) ... we will not be taking a LB with the 1st pick

In its long and venerable history, Oakland has taken a Linebacker only twice in the 1st Round

(Napoleon Harris and Rob Fredrickson)

It is therefore imperative that we go for a DT

by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 10, 2010 3:05 PM PST reply actions

there are plenty in the draft.

If you want, there is a 6-5 304lb guy named Jared Odrick, who can play both 4-3 DT and 3-4 End. He can also be an outside linebacker(5.05 40. it’s pretty good but he’s supposed to be faster than that).

by patriotguy on Mar 10, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

other than that

the DT class is deep enough that we can pick one in the later rounds.

by patriotguy on Mar 10, 2010 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

the answer is QB

Come on. There is no team that does anything in this league without a better than average QB. Russel is a dead end. Since Gannon, where have the Raiders been?
In the toilet, that’s where.

Drafting a QB won’t improve the Raiders next year, but when was the last time any rookie turned a franchise around?

Defense wasn’t the Raiders problem the last few years – scoring points was and for that you need a good, not average or sucky QB.

My bad. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, CB, IUP

LINK

and to his profile: LINK

They have him projected 2-3, around 81st pick. I believe he’ll drop, simply due the the depth of the junior class, and talent in this year’s draft. I’d take him with our fourth pick, if of course we’ve filled DT, MLB, and O(L)T, with the first three. Strong lower body for his size, and a great man/press corner, that can return and be durable. Solid contributor on special teams on defense too.
