1st round pick dilemma
We all have been in a dilemma for who should be our 1st round draft pick. I'm going to try to break down our needs, and come out with the options we all have been noting for the past couple months. I want to discuss those picks as well.
Needs: OL, DT, QB, MLB, CB
1. OT: We have several picks for OT with the first pick. Notable picks are Bulaga, Trent Williams, Anthony Davis, and Mike Iupati.
These guys are all great, but I tend to favor Williams myself. Pass and run blocking is a need on this team. We need to have an OL to help both our QB to be more successful, and our power running game to be more successful. Besides Jake Long, Michael Oher helped make the OL even better for the Ravens, and helped Ray Rice make a pro bowl caliber season(although I do not know if he made it to the pro bowl). All the people I noted that can be selected with the first pick, can make this happen for us. We can also get another OL later in the draft, to help solidify the OL, so we can get 2 OL if we wanted, to help make the OL even better or at least add some depth with a rookie who has potential.
2. DT: The only picks I can concern myself with are Suh and Dan Williams. Cam Thomas in the second, as well as Linval Joseph are great as well, but we are talking about the 1st pick here. So, if we want to draft a DT with the 1st pick, Dan Williams is our likely best.
We all know that our DL needs some dramatic help, and a DT is sure to fill that need right away. Stopping the run, pass rushing, this is what a DT can do for your team. Now, I personally do not know the difference between a NT and UT, but to me I think that they both are the same. If you have 2 Dan Williams in the middle, I think they'll do the same job, and stuff the middle. Anyways, Dt is a need, but I'm sure we can get the same value in the second round.
3. QB: We all know that we need a QB, despite Gradkowski's awesomeness. But Grad may not be our future. Grad certainly has the power to win us games though, but his latest injuries concern me a bit as well. Now, the only QB worth noting that might be there with our 8th pick is Clausen.
I heard Cluasen was a diva, and that makes me want to decapitate him. However, many also think that he will be a better pick than anybody else that might be at 8. This is a toss up for me, because I think a great QB has to be a great leader and playmaker, and Grad also has displayed those. Which I, personally, don't think we should grab one with our 1st pick. There are QBs in the later rounds that should be just as good in terms of value and skill(skill as in what they have to offer). QB is a need, but I don't think it's anything to panic about.
4. MLB: The only MLB worth taking with the first pick is Rolando McClain. Morrison should be better in the OLB position, but at the same time I feel that it's kinda odd, given his body shape, that he's playing in that position.
MLB needs to make sure the middle of the field is well covered, and that they need a great amount of awareness to run and plug up the holes quickly and tackle the ball carrier quickly. McClain can be a force in the middle, and be a huge playmaker. Possibly the next Ray Lewis they say(although I have to admit, I didn't look at him or evaluated him as well). MLBs should also help against the run if we have no DTs that can plug the middle up very nicely. There are also several MLBs in the draft after the first round to take a look at such as Angerer and Micah Johnson(possibly), Spikes and Chaney.
5. CB: The only CB that I can see us getting with the 8th pick is Joe Haden. Although, to me, I think he can make a great safety, but we don't need those.
First of all, I think Joe Haden is overrated. CB is a problem only because we don't have anyone who can help Nhamdi out(and our lack of a pass rush). CB should help buy our front 4 with more time to get to the QB. It should also make the QB harder to find a target if his #1 and #2 are covered very well. I don't think getting a CB with the first pick will make a dramatic change on our team imo, as there are more pressing needs, as well as there are more CBs at better value in the later rounds.
These are what I think our needs are this year. We need to pick the right player who can be help us overall for the coming years, as that will help us be more consistent each year, and make it easier to fill in other needs as well. We CANNOT expect ONE rookie with our first pick to just come in and suddenly give us a dramatic winning season.

You are on the path to a fine career, pguy. .... but have a ways to go ...
We have opportunities to trade down, e.g. take Clausen and trade him to Pittsburgh (#18 pick) for Pouncey. They replace Roethisburger and we don’t overpay for a 1st round lineman. Or take Eric Berry and deal him off to Philadelphia at #24 for Iupati – they want a Safety and we need a Guard without having to reach.
Also, you underestimate our LCB problem. CJ is a dunderhead who doesn’t require a poor pass rush to be worked. Routt doesn’t even like football (has he signed his obscenely generous tender yet?) it plainly shows. So we get a CB in the 2nd round, e.g. Devin McCourty.
In the 3rd Round – MLB Spikes or Angerer.
Bryant and Kelly will be better this year with Waffle than Kelly and Warren were last year with Dwayne Board. We get a big DT later in the draft, e.g. Torrell Troup in the 4th.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask; I’m always generous to a fault with my opinions.
There's no way that Pitt giving up on Ben just because of his troubles.
History has shown they have a strict 3 strike rule and this is Bens 2nd strike.
Phillip Rivers Is A Fag.
Santonio has 2 rings and was a Super Bowl MVP, yet he was traded for a fucking 4th!
Phillip Rivers Is A Fag.
and that's only because the steelers wanted to get rid of him
because he wanted a lot of money, and he only has 1 year left on his contract. You can bet that if he had at least 4 years left, the jets would have to have given up a lot higher than a 5th.
you have good opinions.
You think drafting Clausen will actually be more likely for a trade with another team? Because what I had in mind, is to trade the 8th pick for a mid rounder, and a 3rd rounder.
with that first pick, we get Iupati, or Pouncy, and we have an extra 3rd rounder to boot. That way, we also don’t have to overpay.
I’m guessing that by getting Clausen means we’ll more likely get a better trade possibility, then just trading the pick, simply because we actually drafted the player. So in that case, don’t just settle for their 18th pick, that’s us on the loosing end of the trade(might as well just trade our 8th for the 18th). We should get a 3rd rounder out of it as well.
My Ideal Draft:
We trade down, get a 3rd rounder.
18th pick: Iupati
2nd round: Linval Joseph
3rd round: Spikes or Donald Butler or Jared Veldheer
3rd round: Mitch Petrus or Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
4th: Kevin Thomas or Ed Wang
and the rest I’m not going to make up. And Torrel Troup is listed as a mid-late 2nd rounder.
I was considering the benefit of paying #18 money for Iupati or Pouncey instead of reaching from #8 - but your idea of
getting even more (an added pick) escaped me and I thank you for seeing that missed opportunity.

i picked quarterback
my top 4 picks for quarterback
1 clausen
2 colt mccoy
3 tim tebow
4 dan lefevour
for no reason here is my mock draft of the first three rounds
1- clausen
2- jhavid best
3- best OT available because cable was a OT coach so he could teach him to be the best he could
I personally don't think Best is a need right now.
I’d rather have Linval there.
Also, Clausen reminds me of Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers. I don’t like his throwing mechanics.
Clausen looks like a bust waiting to happen.
I would not take a chance on him. After seeing Brady Quinn become a bust so far, I would not take a chance on Quinn. I think the Browns will take him though.
whaaaat?
how? with receiver who arent even 6 ft? oline who disappears in games…with no running back he made it happen. clausen is the way to go. brady quinn was nowhere near as good as clausen. he has the technique and attitude of a successful qb i really like him. id like to see him in the number 12 raider uniform.
his receivers and TE are above average.
You know Golden Tate? The guy who is freakin amazing catching the football one of if not the best yds after the catch?
Tate isnt first rd NFL caliber
he’s 5’11 dont you think you need a qb who always place a good ball to catch for a 5’11 guy?? and put the ball infront always to get the yac?? not taking anything from tate i like him but mad my man jimmy sure did help him
ok, first of all, height don't mean shit.
Steve Smith is like 5’9", and he can jump over a lot of people when needed. Tate can jump really high as well, and he’s taller than smith. And he is a 1st round caliber nfl WR. Have you seen him with yds after the catch, the TD catches and what not? That’s what makes him great. He was electrifying!
Clausen has accuracy, but he also has what I call “Favre Syndrome.” Where he just throws the ball up into the air, into traffic, and somehow his receivers make the catch. Don’t get me wrong, he displays accuracy, but he does not show me any great decision making.
There were throws I’ve seen him make in highlight vids that he didn’t put the ball in front for tate, I’ve seen tate make chest catches, and the running at monster speed. His receivers and TE were above average on his team. He has an awkward throwing style, he slings it in to the receiver much like favre does, he throws a duck in the air quite a few times like a farve does, and he just makes risk throw after risk throw, like favre does.
I know this because I watched these highlight/lowlight vids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUpkttWewhI&feature=related
I’m not excited about this guy at all.
That's what Gruden was busting Clausen on - his improvising (like Favre) and floaters - that won't get by in NFL
by Sons-of-Blanda on Apr 19, 2010 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions
and why?
because hes running from rushing linbackers and DE’s clausen didnt have the oline bradford had nowhere near it and clausen didnt have the respect of a running game.
yeah he throws on the run a lot. I know that he had a bad OL.
but he scrambles and throws like a maniac even when his OL is doing a good job blocking. If you want, look at how he throws when his OL is doing a good job in the highlight/lowlight vid, and you’ll know what I mean.
lol i see what you mean with running
but he throws a babe of a ball still, and honestly i dont think thats a bad thing, i mean will he be protected in our oline? no but he’ll be ready for it lol, do we have the rec. with speed to break out of routes to save him when hes running out of the pocket? oh yes, man this pick makes more and more sense to me idk but i like it
we do not have the receivers that he had.
tate is extremely different from Chaz and murphy, and very different from DHB because Tate is more quicker than DHB.
In the nfl, throwing like a maniac is a very bad idea.
I especially like the part when he threw it into TRIPLE coverage, and Golden Tate made a ridiculously awesome catch.
tate is quiker than DHB??? fail….tate is murphy to the T. your making clausen look to be awful he really doesnt throw like a maniac he throws an arguable pass here and there but with confidence he doesnt just throw it up and hope for the best, i really dont see what you see
you just failed. Murphy is quicker than DHB, hence tate is quicker than DHB.
he sometimes throws it with confidence, but he also displays a kind of recklessness. I want a QB who makes good decisions in any situation, not a QB who makes a good decision “here and there.” I know he also throws it up, and hopes for the best, I’ve seen it in the vid! He does it!
We're sounding awfully picky about quarterbacks here
For a team that really has no good ones, and hasn’t in years.
ok?
s ogolden tate is steve smith? what records did he break? what were his number? tate is not bad he has talent but clausen makes him good and hes not gunna be more than a slot receiver in the nfl, maybe he’d get lucky and get drafted into the pats or colts or a team with top tier qb where he can be a number 2 but hes not gunna be steve smith in the nfl, anyways this not a tate convo…clausen places the ball where he knows he rec. can make plays…like who you may ask? drew brees? farve? brady? and (overrated) aaron rogers? clausen has the deep ball game down packed…thats all im saying. wearing the #12 Jimmy Clausen is a raider
- Jimmy Clausen is a raider
Steve Smith was just an example.
Tate WILL be at least a #2 receiver in the nfl. Know how I know this? He has great route running skills. period. If you have great route running skills, great hands, and great speed, you will be at least a #2 Receiver. Route running is key to any nfl offense.
Brady doesn’t throw into double coverage like a maniac. Neither does Brees. They do occasionally, but not like a maniac. Maniacs who throw into double coverage are Brett Favre, Aaron Rodges(who you know was a backup to Favre for many years), and Jimmy Clausen.
Another example that Tate is in a similar situation as is Deshaun Jackson. 2nd round WR, who is now a #1 starting WR.
Clausen can throw accurately, but the only very accurate throws I’ve seen him make in the vid, are throws when Tate or one of his other WRs are wide open! And you’ll notice in the vid, that they are wide open A LOT. He gunslings it like a maniac, just like Favre and Rodgers do.
patriotguy come on, ok then answer this do you think he’ll make a positive impact? clausen i mean…even tate actually which one will make our offense better so that we move the chains and keep our defense out as long as posible? thats my arguement and i know your not gunna say tate
Which one would be better?
If I had the option of neither, I would say that, but I would take Clausen simply because we are better at receiver than QB.
Keep in mind that we are talking about OUR team here, and I do not wish to draft Tate either.
Now, if I had to choose Clausen or… say… Anthony Davis? Who the heck do you think I’ll go for? Anthony Davis! or even Iupati! Those guys will help our pass and run blocking dramatically! Clausen is a huge risk not worth taking, imo. I foresee him throwing up ducks, and the opposing defenses just reading him like a book. He was successful because his receivers, and TE, were above average, and had the abilities to get open. He is the next Brett Favre according to what I see in the highlight/lowlight vid.
theres to many rbs in this draft. im thinking a 4th or 5th pick
by sports with steve on Apr 19, 2010 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions
agreed
we already have 2 great rbs who can potentially be amazing with some OL addition and respect of the pass
I have to assume he has him drafted by the eighth pick.

I dont even think of that anymore...I highly doubt his shoulder will give him any troubles..
Phillip Rivers Is A Fag.
Why is everybody
convinced that Tackle is the priority? We need interior linemen! A center would be good, too. Gallery is a solid left guard, but we need a right guard and a center. Satele is ok, but a young monster would be ideal. I say Olsen or Pouncey. Iupati plays center, too.
Refuse to tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death
lol he does it all then
I know iupati is a beast Guard and i’ve heard he is pretty good at OT now your saying hes a center? damn then this is the guy to get bc he does it all…
he didn't play center apparently in college.
I got it wrong. He does play OG/OT though.
Mith Petrus would be a great 3rd round center.
Having the skill set
for center makes him a pretty valuable interior lineman. You gotta know the playbook pretty well to play that position.
Refuse to tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death
crap
I might have him mixed up with another guy——damn draft time, I get all confuggled.
Carry on.
Refuse to tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death
I do know
that there is a guard available who can also play center(not sure if he is a pro caliber one, but in a pinch). Lemmee look.
Refuse to tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death
Pouncey
IS a center, LOL, you wiseass Patriot guy. Maybe he can play guard, too. Right guard.

Obviously, a QB could play MLB. Don't piss me off. Brown meant play the G or C positon as well as OT.
OT is much more demanding.

Picking a QB in the first round would be a horrible mistake
I’m down with trading down if the right OL is not on the board at #8 though. I don’t follow college football closely enough to say what guy is the right guy…but please, no QB. The pieces around the QB are more important—no QB in the league could dominate with our offense until we have a better OL (and of course better playcalling, which I hope we’ll get this year).
@worldblee on Twitter.
Although it is a good year for quarterbacks
Contrasted with the year we had the choice between Russell and Quinn. Then, of course, the Eagles get the better of the three in Kolb in the second round.
Again, people wonder why the Raiders get bashed for their drafting. It’s because other teams draft a qb in the first round and get somebody like Matt Ryan. But our first round quarterback choices are legendary busts.
Clausen will not be a bust
he’s a solid pick as the 2nd QB picked in the draft. May not necessarily start this year, hence, you can’t pick him in top 5 because of the guaranteed money, but at 8, it’s a fair pick. JR is done (unless someone gets to him before he hits KFC in the mornings), Bruce is fragile, Boller is fragile, Frye is out. Other reality is the Skins will not pay Campbell $3mm to sit on the bench, if they can’t trade his 1 year contract, they will release him. as a free agent pick up, can’t pass up. I’m just saying….
by raiders4liffe on Apr 20, 2010 3:33 AM PDT up reply actions
Is there a team willing to trade up? I’m not hearing much. I’d like for us to trade down and get as many picks as possible.
wouldn't happen
but the 9ers have 13 & 17. we trade down to the 13th and pick up a 2nd. Lupati at 13 makes sense; can pick up both DT and another OL or MLB in the 2nd.
by raiders4liffe on Apr 20, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions
it does make sense, but they will not give us a second as well.
They are a rebuilding team as well. A 3rd makes more sense to me. If a team with QB problems, has a mid 1st rounder, and two second rounders, than yeah, we may be able to get a 2nd out of it.
We do what we should have done last year
and take the best OT on the board. I’d be cool with the trade down and getting Iupati or Pouncey, too. Just not sure we’ll have a willing partner. We can shore up CB by signing a veteran like Lito Sheppard. He’s not all that anymore, but I like him better than CJ or Routt. I can also see Joe Haden…I really have no idea who Al’s gonna take, but I can assure you it will piss me off if it isn’t a lineman.
I think Joe Haden is overrated, and I'd rather get Kevin Thomas in the 4th.
But there were teams that are shopping our 8th pick, but like I said, it all depends who ends up being available to us.
Not a huge fan of Haden, either
But he’s a possibility at 8, though CB isn’t as big a need for us, if it were we would have payed to keep Woodson…I’m all for trading back, picking up an extra 3 or 4, and snagging Iupati or Pouncey…not sure it will happen, but we’ll see Thursday night
