Open Thread: Round 3 of the 2010 NFL Draft
With the second round over, we now turn our attention to the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. It is the second and final round on the second day of draft coverage.
Our Oakland Raiders traded down twice in the second round to acquire Lamarr Houston with the 44th overall pick, a defensive lineman from the University of Texas. We picked up a fifth-round pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a sixth-round pick from the New England Patriots.
In the third round, the Raiders are picking fifth which is 69th overall.

No, the offensive line is more important at this point.

So far I’m liking what I see and here’s to hoping it continues…Looks like the old vintage Al again…Or could the Cable guy n Hue have some good input here…Not to mention the “DC”…
What is wrong with Veldheer?

according to many
he’s better fit for a west coast style.
I do like him, but I’m very skepticle. I think OL is more of a safer pick.
At this point in the game, We shouldn’t worry too much about our system. Just the system that a compitent QB can run. I love Bruce, but he will not last forever and may falter. I love McCoy as a back up plan. Perfect time to select him. So what if he doesn’t work out. Its a third round pick. We cut a third rounder a couple years ago.

I think Colt has that intangable that you need to be an NFL QB. He is the exact opposite of JRUSS. He is a leader and a prototypical QB. He has confidence and doesn’t mind getting loud. Good head on his shoulders. We don’t need a Peyton Manning we just need a guy that can manage an offense. With the D we might be able to build and the backs we already have thats all we need… a smart QB.
Now that is a big tackle
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
http://www.draftcountdown.com/ScoutingReports/OT/Jared-Veldheer.php
Strengths:
Outstanding Height-Large frame with room to bulk up-Excellent athleticism-Nimble feet-Able to slide laterally and mirror-Superb Balance-Quick and Agile-Excels in pass protection and can handle speed off the edge-Understands positioning and angles-Shows the ability to sustain blocks-Above average strength-Terrific mobility and range-Smart with superb awareness-Competitive and always gives max effort-Hard Worker-Durable-Big Upside.
Weaknesses:
Will be making a huge leap in competition-Short Arms-Has some issues when it comes to leverage-Isn’t a natural knee bender-Not real powerful-Doesn’t get a dominant push in the run game-Must improve hand use and show more violence-Trouble hitting targets in space-Needs to be a lot more aggressive-May lack a killer instinct.
Notes:
Was a four-year starter ( all 46 games ) for the Chargers-Named a 1st Team All-American in 2009-Earned 1st Team All-GLIAC honors in 2008 and 2009-Was elected a captain by his teammates-Brother, Aaron, played basketball at Hillsdale-Redshirted in 2005-Blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher each season of his career-Really stood out at the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game-Could also project to guard at the next level-One of the premier small school prospect in this class-Still a bit raw and will require some development but is an intriguing prospect with the physical tools to play left tackle in the NFL.

Since we have addressed the most immediate needs for the team with our picks so far, wouldn’t it be a good idea to trade up to grab McCoy? Like, now? He’s a great value at this stage, and we are clearly lacking a long term QB prospect. Somebody needs to make it happen.

DHB was a reach no doubt that early in the 1st round. In the 20’s?not so much IMO.
S&BP > Mile High Mules
DHB picked due to being a good fit
That’s what they said last yr when they took him over Crabtree, that he was a better fit for their system. I didn’t buy it personally since you couldn’t argue w/Crabtree’s production or him playing hurt even tho he played in a wide open offense that produced big #s (where’s Graham Harrell these days?).
That said, I think Dez Bryant is better than Crabtree. But I think Damian WIlliams from USC is gonna be a sleeper. Another WR sleeper that’s still out there is Riley Cooper from FLA, Tebow’s roommate. He’s big & fast & if he can catch Tebow’s f-ed up passes, he must have great hands.
The guy that led us to victory against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh?

And bruce doesnt have the arm necessary to take full advantage of DHBs
biggest weapon….
Down the field straight line speed.
Murphy is a better route runner and thus had a better rookie year.
S&BP > Mile High Mules
If Campbell is left in the 4th, should we take him? I say yeah. One of the two rookies could play guard.
absolutely

Campbell is the kind of high ceiling low floor talent,
that you couldn’t count on to start anywhere, let alone guard. Still I have no problem taking him in the 4th as the early reports of Veldheer remind me of Gallery and he may end up being a guard anyway.

We saw enough of our backups playing this year.

Yeah, I like it.
He seems like he has a much better chance to come in and contribute than Campbell. The only thing I didn’t like that I saw was the questioning of his aggressiveness. Still great feet=good zone blocker.

I got nine, I think you may have had 9, too
but you may want to check. Also I think you nailed the first 7. Insider trading! 2 of mine involved the trade provision I established so I am will to concede that as a tie breaker.
Bottom line is early results lean towards you being draft master! So, what does the rest of the draft hold for the Raiders, Draft Master?

i won, seriously?
I wish I knew, I was right on one prediction, I said that the Raiders would take two trench players in their top four picks, so that came true. hold on…
My article, seven picks, seven predictions:
1- Taylor Mays will not be a Raider
2- Oakland will draft at least two trench players in the first four rounds
3. Oakland will draft a Sleeper in a late round
4- Bruce Campbell is not be the Raider first round pick
5. Oakland will draft a QB in this draft…eventually
6. Another Linebacker is a high priority
7. This year’s draft class will get Oakland over the 11 loss hump

Phillip Rivers Is A Douche
He's gotta be worth something to someone.
I imagine the Raiders will be getting desperate to trade him. Of course, other teams probably know now if the Raiders don’t trade him, they’ll cut him and they can pick him up on a cheaper contract and not lose a pick.

Too good of a value to pass up if he goes to the 4th

I'd take him. Ecspecially in the 4th.
He has a crazy pass rush, I mean, CRAZY. but some question his work ethic. But for a 4th? He’s worth it.

SOB, Spirals and I just spent 20 minutes talking to Jim Otto about all things Raiders:
He thinks really highly of Sampson Satele and thinks that we need another Offensive Lineman. One that can start right away. The general consensus is Mitch Petrus, amongst us. I asked Otto to put a bug in Al’s ear.
All I can say is that if you live close to here and you didn’t come out…Shame on you!!! ;)

I think there's enough shame in missing the opportunity to talk football with Jim Otto, the HOFer Raider of all time!
I live almost 350 miles away and I’m ashamed! Next year’s gonna be off the hook! Jake, I’ll pick you up if you don’t have your license yet!
Sons! I tried to call you! I’ll be wanting to know all about it, and also figuring out which three games I’ll be buying tix for! I’m so envious of you guys!
How’d you pull that one off, Ray? mad props, my Raider man!

"OT"s Top 10 performance
He was the only “OT” to finish in the top ten in every combine test so that prolly speaks very loud to “MrD”…Not just speed but all around performance…
I think Everson Griffen and Bruce Campbell are the two best players available.

We should take Olsen (Center) no? heard he is a mean streak guy...with the 4th.
Or Griffen no doubt, but we are full there, we would need to cut Groves, or Gunheim.
The RaiderLaker
Olsen can play guard as well

Personally, my favorite at this point is Tony Pike. I do think somebody will grab him in round four, however, and I don’t think we should take a quarterback until our last pick in the fifth round. I think we need a cornerback and an interior lineman first for sure.

If they're going to get a runningback in the end, then they should get Deji Karim from Southern Illinois.
We have nobody on the team like this guy. He’s a shorter guy, but he is strong and really fast. He ran a 4.37 and can also return kicks. If we got him in the 6th or 7th, he could be a big steal. I think he has the potential to be a big time weapon, especially on screens.

Cant wait for rounds 4-7
Can’t remember the last time I was this stoked for the last four rounds. Think we should target the following (according to our remaining pix):
4th- OL
5th- OL
5th- QB (gogogogo Dan LeFevour)
6th- CB
7th- 2 pix here, wouldn’t suck to use them to trade up into the 5th/6th
For folks saying get rid of Morrison, I don’t think so. He’s been VERY productive & was thrust into MLB even tho he was always an OLB. Let’s not blame him, he had a crappy line in front of him which will change this yr. Thomas Howard also rox! Now we got Kamerion Wimbley. That makes for 4 VERY good LBs. I’m loving our depth there.
The Jets just cut Alan Faneca. Wanna upgrade our O-Line real quick? Grab him real quick, pay him & make him the leader of a young O-LIne.
