Yesterday, our Oakland Raiders went to the trenches with their draft picks. Defensive lineman Lamarr Houston was taken 44th overall out of the University of Texas. Then, with the 69th pick, offensive tackle Jared Veldheer out of Hillsdale College was selected.
On the final day of the draft, the Raiders hold a pick in the fourth round and sixth round each with a pair of picks in both the fifth and seventh rounds respectively. Those picks are 106th, 138th, 153rd, 190th, 215th and 251st if you want to get into specifics.
Beginning at 7:00 a.m. Pacific on ESPN and NFL Network, the final day gets underway.

What do you guys think about trading a 5th round pick for Jason Campbell today? I really think Washington would do that on draft day.

Projection: 3rd Round
Positives: Terrific speed, fastest player in this draft (4.28-40 was best at combine) … Good combination of strength and quickness, great after the catch… One of the top deep threats in the nation… Keeps improving each year, really came onto the scene with a 55-catch campaign in 2008… Has the physical tools to develop… Good workout numbers, could rise in off-season workouts… May be short, but is very strong, packs a punch and has the necessary bulk to overcome the height disadvantage… Plays much bigger than he is, runs over the middle, likes to block, etc.
Negatives: Must improve his route running, will more than likely be a slot receiver which requires crisp routes… Even though he tries, he’s not the greatest blocker because of his frame… Size, very few players 5’10" or shorter succeed at his position.

He's fast....big surprise
Ford is a world-class sprinter who simply plays at another speed. He does a great job getting up to speed quickly and is a consistent vertical threat. He has a second gear to his game and has the speed to simply run by athletic cornerbacks downfield and track the ball. He’s doing a much better job changing gears as a route runner, setting up his routes and using his great burst to separate from man coverage. Ford isn’t a natural catcher and consistently lets the ball get into his frame. He lacks ideal size and consistently is played off the line of scrimmage to keep him from beating press coverage. He can be knocked off balance downfield easily and will struggle to fight his way through physical press coverage. Yet he’s shown steady improvement as a route runner and possesses the body control to quickly change directions and explode out of his breaks. He does a nice job of working back toward the ball and can uncover and find soft spots for his quarterback. He is still learning the position but has the skill set and burst to consistently separate from man coverage. Although he may not be a guy who can start on the outside, he looks like an ideal slot player who can create after the catch.

hard worker.ackling technique could use some improvement, doesn’t get into the body of the ball carrier… Does not always take the right angles to the football… Can be a non-factor on plays where he lines up inside the box… Only one interception this year compared to five in 2008… Sometimes overplays the ball which can lead to big plays.

I didnt watch much WR stuff this off-season
because I didnt think we needed one (not momre than a CB anyway) however he looks like great value and if he can be a great return man that adds a huge factor to the team and is a very underrated aspect of the game in terms of shortening the field for the offence (especially our offence lately)

Cam Thomas - North Carolina (HT: 6-4 - WT: 330 - 40: 5.28)
Was never very productive at UNC, just three sacks in his 4-year career, and had just 23 tackles last season… Has yet to hone his pass rushing skills… Can sometimes play too high off the snap and struggles to disengage.
Desmond is 305 now and steadily putting muscle on a frame that can take more – he will play at 315 (Thomas is overrated). CB, QB, G from here out … unless we dump some of our guys b/c our roster is swollen.

BUT
Run defense: His best area due to his mass and strength. Thick lower body and good use of leverage to anchor inside and create a pile. Good strength to stack, but doesn’t show enough hand technique to shed and make the play on his own. Doesn’t offer much in terms of lateral agility or hustle to make plays outside of the tackle box. Must do a better job of feeling the trap block coming. Has enough balance to keep his feet, but is too easily knocked out of the way.
Strength: Good upper- and lower-body strength. Generally keeps his pads low to maintain leverage and, as such, is tough to move off the line of scrimmage. Tires easily and quickly plays too high. Has the power to drive the pass blocker into the pocket. Strong hands, but doesn’t show enough technique to shed his opponent and make the play on his own.
But other than those, I think we can wait next year.

Sucks to see a true warrior like Captain Kirk go but he’ll be a stud in Del Rio’s system. For ONCE Al listened to reason and didn’t reach for Campbell and got him right where he deserved to go. Houston is going to be the next Sedrick Ellis. Love that pick. Hated the Rolando pick for a second but he was the best player available and drafting for need that high in the draft has bitten us in the ass more times than I care to recount. Veldheer is going to be a project and his short arms scare me, but after watching the revolving door of suck we’ve had at left tackle since Lincoln retired you gotta start somewhere. I’m still not ready to give up on Mario Henderson, but he’s probably a better fit at right tackle. Either a developmental QB or an interior lineman would top this draft off for me. This is the polar opposite of how I felt after the draft last year.

Well, he isn’t really a true defensive tackle. He has the agility to play defensive end at the next level and lacks the bulk to play defensive tackle. The pick itself surprised me since he isn’t a true defensive tackle. Next year when we’re 26th against the run, maybe we’ll figure out that we need a defensive tackle early in the draft.

Walter McFadden - Auburn (HT: 6-0 - WT: 175) This guy is 100% reliable so he won't pull knucklehead CJ moves
Positives: High football IQ, does not make mental mistakes, is very solid in coverage… Does a nice job baiting the quarterback into making throws they shouldn’t… Has improved his playing instincts, does a nice job closing on the ball… Is surprisingly willing to help in run support despite his frame… Shows good balance in his backpedal and nice acceleration coming out of it… Defensive leader, plays with a high motor, does not take plays off… Will not get beat deep, has good speed and can turn his hips and run with most receivers… Should continue to develop into his frame… Comes from a school known for producing solid CBs… Has a lot of experience in man-to-man coverage playing at Auburn.
Negatives: Can give up too much cushion for underneath throws… Not much of a playmaker, needs to trust his instincts… Needs to be more physical, is just an average tackler, tends to drag runners down… Too thin, needs to add some strength to his frame… Combine snub, one less opportunity to improve his stock this offseason.

I really like it
and as far as DT, Cable has stressed that we’ll be using weird packages defensively. I think we SHOULD get a DT, but CBs were also about to go out of stock, AND Cam Thomas is slipping due to character issues I’m guessing.
So far, I really like our draft.
Drafting a defensive end with the 44th pick was a dumb move along with taking a return guy with the 108th pick. Nothing really stands out as a great pick. I thought McClain was a pretty good pick and Veldheer was good pick. Then, going and taking another tackle with your next pick is a bit questionable. The problem is that when you rank 29th against the run and don’t pick a defensive tackle in the first five rounds, that’s just weird. So far, I don’t see anything great about it. I’m looking at a “C+” right now. That’s my opinion. I’m not going to sit here and talk about this being a great draft just because it’s my team and I am excited about seeing Rolando McClain in silver and black.

I think they'll try and rework his contract.
He has no leverage and no one else is gonna give him a chance so I think the radiers rework his deal. If he says no then they cut his fat a and he gets nothing.

Analysis from cbs sports:
Read & React: Makes up for average speed with very good reaction time and recognition skills. Sniffs out screen plays and understands routes playing in zone or man coverage against running backs. One false step, and he takes himself out of the play because of a lack of quick-twitch movement and recovery speed.
Run defense: Tall, well-built defender ideal for playing inside or at the nine-technique. A good feel for blocks vs. tight end or receiver, extends his arm to hold off the player and wait for the back to make a decision. Very strong at the point of attack and gets through trash to find the ball inside. Gets outside more quickly than his timed speed indicates.
Pass defense: Recognizes routes when in the stack and usually makes the tackle in front of him, but lacks the speed to blow up plays before the catch. When playing on or close to the line he makes contact with tight ends or backs and is tough to discard for players without superior quickness. Often takes away check-down throws for quarterbacks. Good hands when in position to make an interception.
Tackling: Strong, secure tackler who brings a load on every play. Lacks the speed to track down ballcarriers before they get to the sideline but somehow wraps up the legs of players with hustle and taking the correct angle. Is always moving toward the ball no matter where the play occurs. Gets leverage to push piles inside to prevent extra yardage. Does not recover from cut blocks well and takes times to get going after contact. Will be eluded in space because of lacking change-of-direction agility.
Pass Rush/Blitz: Does not rush the passer often because of the need for his instincts in coverage and against the run. Does not own elite quickness off the edge. Unlikely to be a factor on third down but will get the chance to attack the line of scrimmage on run blitzes. Good hands to defeat lineman or cut blocks on the way to the ballcarrier.
Intangibles: Heady competitor who is as durable and hard-working as you’d like at the second level. Blue-collar, lunch-pail kind of player.

The Raiders are focusing on the Run with the LBs instead of the DTs. I just wish we would Take a DT..and KEEP whoever we pick as a DT.

and since we picked a WR and DHB is the project from last year and we got Campbell and JR is the QB project, that’s what they’re talking about.

They were talking that Campbell wouldn’t have the best weapons. And that’s not the guy to talk about with regard to our WRs this year. He might move into that, but he’s not there now, and everyone should know that.

What I liked most about that cool logic segment
