Updates On Our Draft Picks From Yesterday: Lamarr Houston and Jared Veldheer
Lamarr Houston is being converted DE and Tom Cable says that Veldheer will compete for a starting job this year and that he can play on either side of the line.
Leave it to the Raiders to try and shake me up, just when I think I know where their heading. Everyone, including Jim Otto sees Veldheer as a project, now Cable says that he's seen enough of him to believe that he can start right away. That is fantastic news. It was also reported that Veldheer came in for a private meeting and met with Al Davis before the draft. You know that Al gave him his own Wonderlick test and it looks like he passed.
On the other side of the ball, it looks like the player that we thought we had, a run stuffing DT is actually going to be a run stuffing DE. I am thinking that they see a lot of Richard Seymour in Houston and that he will be more of a hybrid, like Seymour. But we shall see.
What do you think of these curveballs?

I was surprised
When I found out yesterday Houston was going to be a DE. I think Seymour is a good comparison—but I was hoping for a player in the middle of the line… you know, the place where running backs ran through big holes last year until Kirk would finally tackle them 5+ yards downfield. And I don’t have a good explanation of why we didn’t take Linval with the pick used for Houston. But time will tell!

I Was Surprised
But not disappointed. I am still excited about this guy and I think he will fit in where ever he is place. DT, DE, let him show it to coach.

Campbell Soup time!
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

Converting Back To Original Position
He was a “DE” when he started and is said to be very versatile so this is not a bad thing…
Also for some who may not have noticed we were run on to the outside a lot because our "DE"s were smallish and weak against the run…They were just pass-rush type one dimensional players and over-pursued leaving gaping holes behind them…Now with the addition of 2 "LB"s who play the run well the middle should tighten up…Also remember we re-hired our “DL” coach from the Willie Shaw period and our last “SB” appearance so that should help that unit perform much better than before…So we hope…
Jim Otto mentioned Waufle yesterday as well.
Waufle wasa HUGE pick-up!!!

i was verry disappointed
although the pick of houston was a solid one that filled a need, i was really hoping the raiders would take a nose tackle like cody and covert to a 3-4. we have ALL the tools for that besides a nose tackle. seymour and kelly are ideal 3-4 ends, with great size and decent pass rush ability. cody would be the prototypical 3-4 nose tackle. wimbley and scott are ideal 3-4 OLB’s, meaning a DE/OLB hybrid specializing at passrushing, and mcclain and morrison would fit great as ILB’s in a 3-4.
oh well, morrison got traded (which makes sense since were NOT moving to a full time 3-4). thomas howard will still be lost on the bench, and if houston is a DE across seymour, i have no clue whose starting at DT. im not too thrilled about kelly and bryant. neither is a great run stuffer.
i love the trade of campbell, and all signs point to russell getting cut (about time). as much as i liked gradkowski, campbell is a proven NFL starter. he was replaced by mcnabb, when ironically, campbell last season had more passing yards (3600) and touchdowns (20) than mcnabb. he has tools to work with. hopefully we address the DT need somehow , or hopefully cable’s scheme surprises us.
i LOVE getting bruce campbell in the 4th. great value, and im glad we didnt reach for him in the first or second round. overall, a great weekend, but i would have preferred cody and a 3-4
