My thoughts on our 2010 Draft

I wrote some of this on another site I frequent (AllHipHop.com), but I thought I'd bring it here for my first FanPost. I'd like to hear supporting AND opposing views on my take on the draft....

Traded away: Cap'm Kirk Morrison

Traded for: Jason Campbell

I'd have to say this is the best Raiders draft since the year we got Nnamdi, and even HE took a few years to become the best CB in the league.

Rolando is a BEAST and is a bit of an improvement over Cap'm Kirk, but I still wish we kept Morrison as an outside backer along with Howard and Wimbley.

Houston is a NICE pickup and a great run stuffer unlike any we've had in recent years so that's a BIG improvement. You combine him with Seymour, Kelly, Bryant, Shaunessey, and Scott and I think our D just got a lot more efficient against the run.... I'm overjoyed to see my Raiders not lookin' like the Red Headed Stepchild with Autism of the NFL

Veldheer and Campbell are nice pickups for us, and we got Bruce much later than we were originally projected to get 'em so I'm really happy about that. Al musta been drugged the last few days 'cause I swear it ain't in us to use common sense these days. Campbell could turn out to be a BEAST with some work on his technique and Veldheer could provide a lot of immediate help at tackle. I just wish we got a more NFL ready RT or RG as opposed to a LT and a "project".

Jacoby Ford is a great pickup as a return man and extra receiver. I liked Nick Miller but he was out the whole year and only collected a paycheck for what he did in the preseason. I say we keep Miller as a backup just in case we have to deal with injuries in the return game again. But release Jonathan Holland if none of our current WR suffer a catastrophic injury in the meantime

Walt McFadden isn't a bad pickup this late in the draft, but I would have MUCH rather had Akwasi Owusu-Ansah instead of one of the OTs we drafted. He woulda been a BEAST for us. I still say we got a pretty good DB that can learn from Aso, so I ain't even mad at this. Travis Goethel is a nice pickup to compete with Ricky B. from what I hear. And since I was never really sold on Ricky being a legitimate threat at MLB, I'm lookin' forward to seeing if he can challenge him for the backup position to Roland(o) the Barbarian. Stevie Brown can be a good backup to Huff/Branch/Mitchell and can learn the ropes from them as one of them (hopefully) converts to CB if Ware or McFadden doesn't pan out.

Trading for Jason Campbell was something I kinda wasn't feelin' but since we got him for a sack of peanuts, a nicklebag, and some blunt wraps, I gotta say this could get JaCarcus out much faster than I thought he'd leave. Campbell might play with a chip on his shoulder too, so I like it. If he and Bruce can compete for the starting QB job, our team will be solid with whoever wins the job.

So in all, I think my Raiders didn't blow it like I thought they would, and they actually drafted like a team that belongs in the NFL for once. I guess Al was too busy to ruin the draft for us, like usual, since he'll be the star of the next "Tales From the Crypt" movie....(yeah, I said it!). Either way, Draftie Claus was on our side this weekend!

I give the Raiders an A- for gettin' some good value out of what we have, and setting us up for a pretty good season..... I still say that 8-8 is a GREAT possibility with the talent we have now. And we'll be an even bigger force come 2011, if there's even a season.....

I'm more proud of this team now than I was during the Superbowl season. 'Cause at least they're playing for a coach they like/respect and we can only go up from here. We all know how miserable these last 7-8 years have been, and I only hope that this year will provide the necessary spark to steer this ship in the right direction. If not, I'm on the first plane to Detroit to take my Homerism to a team more worthy of it! Haha. I keed. I keed.

Maybe, but probably not with Al Davis at the helm. Expect another 3 steps back soon.....

I think we could use another O-Line guy, like Faneca.

He can come in and teach and be a vetran to the young guys.

I voted Yes, we'll finally break through

mostly because of the signing of Jason Campbell and improved run “D”
Jason Campbell signing means the end of JaCarass Russell, unless he takes a huge pay cut
which he said he will not do. He ( Campbell ) is an instant improvement at QB. Hopefully he can come in and make a huge difference in the amount of points we score and the amount of time our offense stays on the field. I think the Wolverines play calling will help a lot too.

Our defense was already really close, we just needed to stop the “big” run plays and put more pressure on the QB. I think we’ve addressed both of those weaknesses this off season.

All in all, I feel hope (real hope) for the first time in while.

With our additions

and notable subtractions, we have increase our chances of having a good year by 100%. Also, it helps playing the NFC west.

There is no other division I’d rather play than the NFC West.

Arizona lost Warner

And still struggle to run, Seattle will be around 5-11. Thats a terrible division, the niners went 7-1 against there division, yeah it’s that bad there

Niners

did have a good draft. Much as loathe them, I have to admit it. Guess we’ll see how their quarterback situation resolves itself.

Very happy with this draft.....

We need to give mad props for whomever occupied, locked in a closet, ignored Al Davis. I must admit, I always liked Rolando, just didnt think he was on the Raiders radar. Once he was picked, I was a little shocked, but loved it. the rest of the picks fell into needs and the two OTs we got were a little bit of reaches, but thats Cable’s specialty.

As for Jason Campbell, I agree with Raider Zealot, I am not high on him and he is definately not the answer (lets hope I am wrong). but since we got him for basically nothing, him or gradowski is a significant upgrade over JR and ships him out sooner. The one thing I like is his 60% completion rate. but until our OL improves (hopefully sooner than later with our draft picks) then he is going into the same situation as Washington. He does have more weapons than he did in wash. I kinda see j campbell as another k collins.

One thing I want to throw out there, if it is in our plans to get a young qb of the future, next few years could be in our favor. Of the 32 teams, I would guess something like 28 already have their qb. No matter where we draft, we should have a pretty good shot at one of the top 3 in the next couple of drafts.

Al did do this draft

He just finally trusted Cable with judging personnel. They seem to have a weird relationship built on trust. Al hired him on instinct, didn’t even have a bio on him at the press conference, if I remember. All the naysayers, the Al haters can kiss my ass. As for Campbell, I waver on him. I hope he’s the answer, but I thought Brooks was the answer too. New QB might happen, not this year. I wanted Colt Brennan, 3rd stringer from Hawaii on the skins roster.

tatum, davidson, romanowski, wisniewski...LET'S GET NASTIER!!!!

J Campbell

is experienced AND young. Great deal of upside. He played in a tough NFC East division; didn’t fit the west coast offence but perfect for 5-7 step drop back QB with a gun. His completion and TD/int ratios are fine. He just needs to immerse himself in Hue’s playbook and get chemistry with our young WRs. He’ll be a top half of the league QB with a shot at top 10 (i know I’m optimistic) if we develop a running game. He’ll be prepared and unflinching under pressure. Colt is still not ready to start.

by raiders4liffe on Apr 26, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I dont know about the upside...

but until our OL gets blockin, he will still be running for his life just like in Wash. I know we drafted two OL, but both are projects. One was out of div 2 and the other is your typical Al workout warrior. I give them at least a year before they can get significant playing time. That leaves our original OL that did so well last year. Without an OL, we cant develope a running game and trust me, he will continue to flinch.

But hey, if the two new OL can step in right away, and improve our line….then your right, running game improves, and we cant to see what kind of qb campbell can really be.

You mentioned, that Campbell didnt fit the west coast offense….got me thinking. The last superbowl we were in, we ran the west coast offense. Same with the year before and we would have won the sb if it hadnt been for the illegal “tuck.” Why did we go away from the west coast offense? to go back to the 9 step drop and chuck the ball as far as we can (AL Davis) offense?

by gl12ox05 on Apr 26, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Gannon

was the perfect west coast QB and AD allowed as long as Gruden was winning. Our offence this year will solely depend on building a running game first and then stretching the field. Zach Miller may do exceptionally well as second option and MCD coming out of backfield will be a nightmare for opposing LBs. Gallery needs to stay healthy and picking up a name OL will do us wonders while the rookies develop.

by raiders4liffe on Apr 27, 2010 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions

thats my point...

we were winning, so why dont we look for anothe WC qb? As you said AD kept the WC offense as long as we were winning. Well the 9 step chuck and duck hasnt worked since 1976….

But your right, its all about AD’s time wharp.

I do think miller and the WR’s will do a little better with campbell (maybe a lot better if the OL can improve). What position did Faneca play? if he played RG he could be a good fit here…

by gl12ox05 on Apr 27, 2010 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

wanted everywhere

he’ll pick his team; not sure what the latest is but we’ll need to pay market price to get him.

by raiders4liffe on Apr 27, 2010 8:46 AM PDT up reply actions

um...what???

you really think the al haters are wrong? You do realize the reason the raiders have sucked since their last superbowl is none other than AL Davis?? I am definately a AL hater. You also realize that Al wanted to replace Cable the last two years. He just couldnt find anybody who would tell Al that they could win with JR.

I still strongly believe that if Al Davis has his way, Cambell is our #1 draft pick, not Rolando. Al must go through many more of these sensible drafts before “I”, and I am sure many others start giving him his props again.

Maybe it was all of Cable’s judging personnel, but it wasnt because Al trusts him. It was probably because Cable threw Al Davis out of his chair and sat on him (much like that other coach that Cable almost killed).

by gl12ox05 on Apr 26, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

It looks like a great draft right now

But let’s wait and see how many of these are contributing to the Raiders in 2013 before we grade this draft as anything but an incomplete. You don’t get your report card at the beginning of the school year…
