Oakland Raiders Get Over the Hump Open Thread Day:
This is where you can link anything that you think is funny, interesting or write whatever is on your minds about the Raiders or life in general.
I will be having a couple of brews at the Airport Hilton on Friday, after work, in hopes of being able to speak to some of the newcomers.
For those of you who don't already know, the Raiders will have their first mini camp this weekend and all hands will be on deck for the first time. Most of the new players and some of the current players all stay at the Airport Hilton.
Cheers,
Saint

Free agent safety Darren Sharper is visiting Jacksonville today and if he isn’t signed, expect Dallas to be hovering around.
Nearly two months after the NFL’s free-agent signing period kicked off, New Orleans’ Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper is taking his first visit this offseason.
If Jacksonville fails to sign him, don’t be surprised if Dallas does.
The Cowboys also did not draft a safety last weekend and they released Ken Hamlin before the draft. Dallas is known to be eyeing Sharper.

This is a repost from earlier today but I thought it needed a new home:
I know there are some limitations to him. He’s not an elite QB but you have to look at the situation he was in last year with the Skins.
If you read and listen to what the players are saying this year about the offensive scheme last it is an absolute joke. Some examples:
1. On a 3rd and 7 situation Jim Zorn would call a play designed for a 3rd and 3 situation.
2. JC wasnt allowed to audible. Zorn went on the air and said that he would bench JC if he ever audibled out of a play.
3. People want to knock on how JC held onto the ball too long and that was one of the reasons he got sacked, but if you look at the tape in one instance JC was doing a three step drop and on the third step you got laid the eff out.
3a. The Washington Post showed a statistic that showed how Flacco of the Ravens had like around 3 seconds
to throw the ball while JC had half that amount of time.
4. JC had the lowest pass attempts for players longer than 20 yards. This was due to the fact that he would be decked before the play could develop.
5. Hes quiet but if you cross him in the public like Clinton Portis did in January hes gonna go out and drop some knowledge on ya.
I’m a Skins fan, and I have formally adopted the Raiders as my new west coast team, so I have seen all the Skins games. If you have a chance look at the Saints game from last year. Literally this was the only game throughout the entire season that JC did not get sacked (click the link to his stats from last year) and got decent Oline play. Look at the numbers he put up against the Super Bowl team known for causing turnovers.
30 for 42. 367 yards and 3 TDs and 1 int (which came at a bad time).

Campbell put up solid numbers from last year and we won't have to worry about a system drop off!
He may be coming from the only team in the NFL where we can say he will get better O-line play and have more weapons than last year!

Thanks for the heads up
This confirms a lot of what I suspected about Campbell. The revelations on Zorn’s ineptness in the first two points are eye-opening. Hue Jackson is, by all accounts, an easy man to deal with, so I’m not concerned there.
I think Campbell will live or die here based on our O-line. If guys like Campbell and Veldheer can step in an contribute, he will be great for us. If not, it’ll be Washington redux.
So I have to admit, I have no worries about Campbell personally, but a ton of worries about our line. Consistency is an issue…when everyone is on their game, things are fine. They’ll never dominate, but will do what need to be done. But when not….well, not one but two QBs got hurt behind it last year. As much as I think Mario Henderson will be good, Brian Orakpo humiliated him in that Redskins game. And yet, the week before, he had pretty much handled James Harrison of the Steelers. Perfect example of the issues the whole line needs to iron out.
"'Tis a bird I love, with its brooding note, And the trembling throb in its mottled throat; There's a human look in its swelling breast, And the gentle curve of its lowly crest; And I often stop with the fear I feel-- He runs so close to the rapid wheel." Nathaniel Parker Willis, "The Belfrey Pigeon"
The line is really young.
And that being the case, I am not sure we could have got a better QB. Campbell is used to being hurried and he is a tough Sons Of Blanda. I fully expect the line to be inconsistent this year. Like you pointed out, Henderson is wildly inconsistent. Gallery needs to stay healthy. And someone, anyone, needs to be decent at RT.
Right now I think Walker may be the best option at RG.
Hopefully this line starts to gel. There is definitely the potential.
I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

I think everyone was surprised at how well Walker handled the RG spot.
Considering it was done out of necessity cause everyone one else was hurt and that he never played inside before. I don’t remember how well he did at pass protection, but I do remember him blowing some people up on running plays.

Info about Walter McFadden
I wasn’t on the site when we picked this guy up and I was wondering if anyone had any good info about him? I know Cable was really high on this guy but I’ve never heard of him. He’s listed as a DB so I’m not sure where exactly he’s going to be played and what kind of role we can expect from him. If anyone knows anything, please let me know.
"To me, MMA is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography and the dancers hit each other."
Looks like a classic Raiders corner
He’s a little smaller than most (5’10") but he has the build, speed and man coverage skills that are required.
Here’s a scouting report from NFLDraftScout.com:
Read & React: Good reaction skills, though he doesn’t rush to support the run. Rarely fooled in coverage, showing good burst to the line of scrimmage to defend the receiver screen. Can be beaten with good play-action, but has the acceleration and straight-line speed to recover.
Man Coverage: Natural coverage skills. Rare timed speed, which translates well onto the field. Loose hips and quick feet to turn and run with receivers. Changes directions smoothly and shows a burst to break on the ball. Quick, active hands for press coverage. Lacks the bulk teams are looking for in a press coverage corner, but is aggressive. Doesn’t back down from the challenge of a bigger receiver.
Closing/Recovery: One of his better traits. Shows an explosive burst to close on the ball and has natural ball skills (six INTs as a senior). Can be too aggressive fighting for the ball, despite his slight frame, and draw the flag. Times his leaps well to compete against bigger receivers, but can be pushed aside. Needs to add more strength.
Run Support: An area of relative concern. Isn’t a coward, but doesn’t fight through blocks consistently or fight to get involved (only 10 assisted tackles in 2009). Willing to take on the bigger back and is generally reliable in the open field.
Tackling: Scrappy tackler who doesn’t back down from a challenge. Experienced gunner and generally a reliable open-field tackler. Won’t wow anyone with his explosiveness, but consistently gets his opponent to the ground with low, wrap-up tackles.
Intangibles: Accomplished special teams performer. Had to wait his turn at Auburn, but quietly developed into one of the better playmaking corners in the SEC over his two starting seasons. Coaches say he’s matured quite a bit in his four years and now is considered a solid person, smart player and team leader.
Thanks for the info
He sounds like a solid improvement over Stout and can play special teams. I really think our special teams is going to one of the best in the league with a solid competition from a healthy Nick Miller and Jacoby Ford along with some new rooks to contribute.

Help me through this
Jason Campbell is tall, athletic, strong arm, really liked by his teammates, tough, durable, 5 years experience, never misses a game, solid citizen, hard worker yet when I read reports from the “experts” i.e. sportswriters who never played a game in their life, they write that Campbell is a below average QB, not an elite player, not a long term solution.
I have to scratch my head a bit here, let me see, he is 28 years old, has a 60% completion average, until last year a good TD to interception ratio, has a QB 80 plus rating on a bad team. He has never had quality receivers, has had 7 or so offensive coordinators in his 6 year stint, and last year at least didn’t have an offensive line worth a damn.
What is there not to like about this guy? I believe Romo who is now considered an elite QB sat on the bench for 5 years before starting, and is now 30 or so.
It seems to me Campbell is the perfect candidate for a long term solution.
Maybe the experts are right and I am blind but from what I have seen I really like Campbell and I cannot fathom why Washington chose McNabb over Campbell.
On a bad team he has shown constant improvement, never had elite receivers other than their tight end.
As in all things in life, time will prove me right or wrong, but I really like what I see.
Am I delusional?
Yes, you are probably right
but I did know that Brooks, McCown, and ultimately Russell was not the answer. I also knew that for as much as I liked Morrison he was not a MLB. Everything else I plead guilty to.
NcNabb over Campbell?
Shanahan runs a west coast offense and McNabb is a west coast QB, Campbell is not. On the other hand, the Raiders are a run first and throw the ball down field team. Campbell is prefect for that.

The Redskins
Made it all the more strange by letting him go so cheaply, seemingly in a hurry to get rid of him, after trading for a guy who is on his final legs, and for whom they don’t have much in the way a replacement…less of course, Grossman finally pulls it together.
So either Redskins management really don’t know what they’re doing and completely didn’t know what they had… or we’ve simply taken another stopgap measure. Brought in another quarterback to fill the roster until we actually do get somebody good. I still remember when they drafted him. They were so big on him.
Or...
the Redskins didn’t want to carry McNabbs and Campbells contracts. I’m not sure how many backup QBs make 3.5 Mil but I would guess the number isn’t high and with McNabb probably being their starter for the next 3 years at least and Campbell on his last year of contract then the best thing to do is trade him before he becomes a free agent next year.
That way they get something out of him and avoid having a hign priced bakcup (5 mil+ a year for however long he signs for).
makes sense all round to me.
Unless McNabb gets hurt of course…
by KiwiRaiderFan on Apr 28, 2010 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah
Unless he gets hurt. Or retires finally because all the injuries have added up to where he’s like Dennis Quaid’s character in Any Given Sunday.
No your not
Remember so called “experts” that are sports writers often never played a damn game in their life. Or they often just want to speak the loudest to get the most attention.
I think Campbell is the answer as long as he shows he wants it, atleast its a breath of fresh air compared to JaSoonToBeGoneAss

I'm hoping FA Alex Parsons usurps Cooper Carlisle at ROG. Looks like someone 'with attitude' ... goot ,very goot
Parsons was near the top 10 0-linemen in the combine 40 and top 3 in the 20-yard split. He’s bigger than Carlile by about 10 lbs at 305 and is working on his upper body strength – he had 25 reps of 225 lbs.

Parsons indicated earlier this year that he wanted to play Center in the NFL b/c the Center “is the Einstein of the line.”
Our rookies are a versatile group and with some injuries being inevitable; our organization showed some prudence that will make us more consistent when bad things happen.
Good point
Parsons is under-rated; a lot of potential there and should be a force within a year or two.
USC’s line did struggle surprisingly, but I think Parsons was consistently good along with Brown.

He could be a major threat there, with his blend of size and speed I could see him being a poor mans Vernon Davis. They could go with 2 tight end sets and it would add another weapon to the offense.
I'd rather have Tonga as our Blocking Back, and have Reece as a reciever on 3rd down passing plays
Phillip Rivers Is A Douche
I’d rather have Cartwright as the receiving back in that spot.

He's a tad small for that spot...I like Reece because he can do everything Cartwright can,
but he can also run over defenders, block on swing passes and protect the QB better as well
Phillip Rivers Is A Douche
I certainly don’t think Reece can catch the ball out of the backfield like Cartwright can. Like you said, we already have a blocking fullback so that importance becomes less. Cartwright is also a better player on special teams.

Have you seen the hands on Tonga
soft as a babies behind. That was the thing I noticed about him at the combine how easily and effortlessly he caught the ball out of the backfield, like he could do it in his sleep.

Sumbitch! "Despite a well-graded draft, the Raiders are still longshots ... in 2010, including at +7500 to take the AFC title and +10,600 to win the Super Bowl"
In Vegas Today and on ’sportsbetting.com, $100 on Oakland to win the SB yields $1,060,000 next February.
StD is 14/1 .... Denmother is 33/1 .... K.C. 64/1 ..... Oakland 72/1 ..... for the AFC Championship (how can we be so disrespected NOW?)
This is a travesshamockery!

If they had big time bets on the NFL draft in Vegas, and you picked against the favorites to get picked by the Raiders in the 1st, then those people would have made a bunch of money.
Got it. And despite our recent coaching changes and drafting, the perception of us is quite low - we are undervalued
(I’m going to forget about gambling b/c it keeps me awake) This is another advantage we have going for us this season; the positives just keep accumulating.

Isn't it Ironic
When people have the conviction that Idealists are not living in the “real” world. As if there were other worlds one could be living in. I mean if the shoe fits, wear it.

What's more real, my thought of the beer bottle in front of me or the beer bottle itself?
by Sons-of-Blanda on Apr 28, 2010 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions
A brilliant question
And to not see it as a question, would possibly be to not experience the reality that is the mystery of life (to change my quote around a little).

How do I ever know the beer bottle in and of itself aside from my ideas of it? Is the first question for me that follows.

On the other hand, the object preceded your eyes seeing it and your mind's knowing it (essence and its accidentals).

But on the other hand
Knowledge and Wisdom are very different. We may have knowledge that the sun rises and sets, but it takes wisdom to know that because the sun rises and sets that alone doesn’t guarantee such an occurrence in the future.
So with the Beer Bottle instance, we may come to know certain features of the beer bottle i.e. long neck, brown bottle, colorful label, cold, etc etc. But it takes wisdom to know that none of those features can ever exist outside of consciousness.
So we may say, that other consciousnesses are perceiving those features else where in the world. Are they not existent, simply because I am not perceiving them. And that is where I will pause and collect.
Collective Consciousness you say? I think I can accept that. I guess I am just curious about your idea that “consciousness existed before matter and we participated in it.”
"I need a couple A's for Q's, I'm not an Asshole I'm just a little confused"

If you see a speck in the distance and haven't yet identified it (a boat, a man, a bird, a beer bottle) you still
register something that existed before you saw it. Your seeing it didn’t give it existence. Otherwise, we would all be sharing the same hallucination (because people notice things simultaneously); and that is much more complex than just admitting that things exist that we perceive through our five senses and come to know what some object is by abstracting its form (or essence) from its physical container.
by Sons-of-Blanda on Apr 29, 2010 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions
It could be a shared hallucination! Haven't you seen the Matrix?

Our conscience is brought into action by perception
Your sense register an object – the mind gets activated – memory follows b/c the mind can’t function w/o it – the mind id’s the object based on stored images. This brother (Catholic one) once told me that one day he perceived a large black-and-white object and identified it as a cow; it turned out the object was another brother. Whyle this is a typical example of brother humor, this particular story is true and serves educational purposes.

are you suggesting dualism?
"I need a couple A's for Q's, I'm not an Asshole I'm just a little confused"
-Aesop Rock
Human nature requires a body as much as a mind to be human - so not a dualist in that sense. sm of mind and body
But we can distinguish between the mind and the body – the spiritual and the physical. Just as we can speak of the mind having the two powers of intellect and will – to know and to desire/will/choose … though some might say that given sufficient knowledge we would all will similarly. It’s not so much a duality as a hierarchy – the mind leading the body. The charioteer driving the id and the super ego to mix Plato w/ Freud.
by Sons-of-Blanda on Apr 29, 2010 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Don't forget about the Maslow you got in there.
Then there are some will say that it really doesn’t matter, because the only will is the will to power…and that comes out no matter where you are on the hierarchy. Typically in the form of the tail wagging the dog or the Russell :)
It does seem like we live in a world of super ego charioteers.

the black horse, desire, has usurped control while reason (the white horse)
is not engaged and Russell’s charioteer – the mind (which is supposed to blend (optimize the two horses) desire and reason) has given desire free reign.

If you haven't already, Read Plato's Dialogues [the foundation of philosophy]
Phaedrus, covers the nature of the soul (this one’s on point)
The Symposium, about desire – the driving force eros (start with this one! you get Plato’s sense of humor and philosophy at once).
Apology, Socrates defending himself at his trial
Euthyphro, makes us reconsider what we believe we know and understand
Phaedo, is about being
The Republic, uses the analogy of a Utopian society to consider man’s situation.
The paradigm (and masterpiece) of Western Civilization (that preceded pure philosophy by 500 years) has got to be Homer’s Iliad
[I like Fagles translation best but Lattimore and Fitzgerald have been praised too. Lattimore’s translation is very literal while Fagles captures the spirit.
Then on to Aristotle, beginning with his Nicomachean Ethics. You will appreciate his clarity and understanding.

Mark my word, if JC gets minimal protection and any help from the running game, the Raiders will be at least an 8-8 team this year & a playoff team in 2011. He was a top 15 QB last year without a 1000 yard rusher or receiver, the worst O-line in the league and with an inept COACH.
