All Hands On-Deck: Oakland Raider Mini Camp Begins Today

Today is the day that we will get our first look at all of our draft picks and free agent signings in silver and black.

Today is like pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training. This will be the first time that the new guys get to catch balls from Jason Campbell and the first time that Campbell will be throwing passes to his new squad. I am pumped!

Today will also be the day when we see if Al is giving JaMarcus Russell the Marcus Allen treatment or if J-Russ is actually being allowed to compete for the job that he lost last season. On this, I am NOT so pumped!

I can't wait for the reports out of the first day. Usually Cable will say something like, "There were a lot of things that we like in the new guys on the line and the leadership with Rolando is definitely there. But, we knew what we were getting when we drafted these guys. Football players. I think our team is better."

Then on JaMarcus he will say, " He is here to compete..Next question."

I must say that the lack of news on Russell is making my stomach ache a bit. I thought this was a new team with a new attitude that had cut the dead weight. Then, I heard that Russell is still here without restructuring. I mean, it is the bosses money, but, any quarterback with any sense of the game knows that he should restructure. In my dream last night the players were cat calling JaMarcus and I am sure that won't happen today, but some are definitely thinking it. IF he is to remain an Oakland Raider, he needs to fix his situation as a teammate and restructuring and saying something like, "As a team we need to get better. I know that we are on the verge of something big here and I want to make sure that we have enough money to go out and get the players that we need."

Anyway, look out for some reports as the day goes on.

Cheers,

- Saint

Let the madness begin

As I stated in earlier posts Al is still unwilling to give up on this monumental gaffe known to the rest of us as “JaFatass”
I have to wonder if it was the overhead projector fueled rant to Kiffin that is Al’s last thing to get over. The “he’s going to be great so get over it” line that still sticks in his craw like a long lost hoagie.
Anyone else, even Al in the old days, would have cut JaFatass for not restructuring his contract, but noooo not this time. JR will have to prove his ineptness and laziness beyond a shadow of a overhead projected doubt.

When I want Mel Kipers opinion, I'll fucking give it to him !

After All The Great Moves

Here we go again,Can’t Al just get rid of JaFatass now and put all this new found positive energy towards the players that want to be here.Just the thought of this Knucklehead being allowed to participate without a contract restructure makes me wonder. We all know how Al loves the circus and to think that he could just make this guy go quietly and save us all the bullshit doesn’t seem possible. Please Al don’t do this again, cut Fatass and lets enjoy what we got.

What are the rules on cutting a player

If the Raiders cut JR and no one picks him up, would the Raiders be able to re-sign him at a reduced salary? It’s a certainty that no one would sign him at his current salary, so if NFL rules allow him to be re-signed, it would be a way for Al to keep his boy without making the team suffer so much financially.

Never doubt the secercy of The Al...

Now that Russell is apparently on Al’s bad side, I am in no way worried about him just stealing paychecks from the team. Al no likey people taking advantage or being disloyal to him.

What if he does participate in mini camp is that a signal that he restructured or that Al’s overhead projector is broken?

Only 122 days 'til the Raiders destroy the Titans!

Even though it is a 3 day mini camp w/ no contact, we can still have glimpses of the future. Jerry McDonald pointed out that last year

  • Derrick Burgess developed the stomach flu before camp (Russell may get this, too)
  • DHB had a problem holding onto the ball
  • DHB and Mitchell both had hamstring pulls
  • Russell couldn’t complete anything
  • 10 center QB exchange fumbles

I fully expect better reports from this years camp. Good write up, Saint!

I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

by Rich Langford on Apr 30, 2010 9:15 AM PDT reply actions

I don't know why everyone gets so worked up

on whether the Raiders divest themselves of Russell now or later.
Some time today it will be reported one way or another if Russell is indeed 300 plus pounds. If he is not then somebody owes him an apology. Not that that would ever happen.
Everyone is so busy floating the latest JaMarcus rumor they have no time for an apology.
Why does everyone worry so much about the money Al owes JaMarcus. Hell, Al threw 15 million away on Walker last year and Al didn’t seem to be worrying about it, why should we?
With Al it is never about the money, Nnamdi is the highest paid corner back, Janikowski the highest paid kicker and Lechler the highest paid punter. We should be happy that we have an owner who is not penny pinching. No one has ever accused Al of worrying about the money.
Simply stated, Campbell will be the starting QB this year. Russell is not competing for the job. Campbell will be starting next year also, so why the constant concern about Russell?
If Al wants to keep him as the 3rd QB, so be it.

by Laoren on Apr 30, 2010 10:02 AM PDT reply actions

The Reason We Get Worked Up

Why should The Raiders give this pile of crap a chance to get hurt during practice and have to eat 9 mil in cap money. He has never showed any love toward “The Nation”and totally ruined our team for the last three years.Don’t think for a second that his agent won’t have him come up lame if there is any hint that he may be cut because to this money sucker 9mil is better than 3mil anytime. Here in The Nation most of us have worked for what we got,and for JaFatass to sit on the sidelines one more year with his ipod, stupid looking studs,a snowcap and a look like he could care less is one year too many.I think a reporter needs to ask one of the great Raiders of the past such as Phil Vilapiano what he thinks of JaFatass and I’m sure he will agree with me ,this guy needs to go.

by bayparkphil on Apr 30, 2010 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Eliminating Jamarcus Russell

would go a long way towards getting back the locker room and letting the players know that slothlike attitudes will not be tolerated. For the Raiders, it always seems like for every step they take forward, they take a big step back. If Russell had any sense of loyalty, team, or accountability, he would restructure his contract and take a step back and try to regain his status on the team. Unfortunately, the guy hasn’t shown any sense of humility through it all and has always blamed others for his failures (and the team lets him get away with it). I wish we could just end his tenure here, but it sounds like that may not happen.

The UDFA's and FA's in camp should be listed this afternoon.

The first acronym is a free agent that was signed, but he was not drafted. The second acronym is a free agent.

Apparently Sons is building a balloon so we can view it from the air.

Al Davis may have some scud missles though.

now - someone may be indeed watching from above

This morning, around 11, there was a helicopter hovering over the premises, or thereabouts. I have a terrific view.

More from J. Mc
  • W McFadden got burnt a few times. (We still don’t know who #34 is)
  • Campbell threw some wobblers and at least one was picked
  • T. Scott wasn’t on the field
  • L Murphy was participating
  • Campbell struggling with timing to new WR’s
  • No comments about DHB dropping any passes from afternoon session (hopefully this means there weren’t any)

Slide show: Our first look at the `new’ JaMarcus Russell at Oakland Raiders minicamp

Kawakami: Time for the Raiders and JaMarcus Russell to move on

JaMarcus Russell’s mere presence at the Raiders first minicamp Friday made him stand out among his teammates. His surprisingly impressive passes and sub-300-pound frame made him worth watching even longer.

Here he was, acting as the Raiders hoped he would when they drafted him first overall in 2007. Too little, too late? Probably, but Friday’s show made me wonder if he really does have a chance, a second chance.

“My thing is to keep coming out to work until they tell me not to,” Russell said. “Today I’m going to keep coming out, compete for the job, work my tail off.”

Russell’s arm strength never has been in question, so watching him zip passes was nothing new. To see those lasers reach their target — only about four passes of, say, 25 fell incomplete — was stunning.

As for his always controversial weigh, he didn’t appear or play like he was carrying 300 pounds, as multiple reports pegged his super-sized frame.

So now what? Can he really go about the business of competing for a starting job he lost midway through last season? For now, yes. But his contract must be addressed, right?

He is due $9.45 million base salary, $3 million of which is guaranteed whether or not he is on the opening-game roster.

Asked in the post-practice press conference if he has restructured his contract, Russell initially didn’t have a chance to answer. Raiders-appointed chaperon Eddie Anderson interrupted and said that

question was off limits. I followed up, however, and Russell confirmed he has not reworked his deal, “not at all.”

Would Al Davis keep Russell around at that steep price as a backup to probable starter Jason Campbell? Seems ludicrous, until you realize the Raiders have mastered ludicrous in years past (see: Javon Walker, an expensive bench warmer 2009).

Russell doesn’t seem the least bit bothered that his status is up in the air after Saturday’s trade for Campbell.

“We’re teammates. We’re not fighting for each other,” said Russell, noting he was a junior in high school when he first met Campbell . “We’re out here to compete and get better for the organization.”

That Russell was allowed out there — thus putting the Raiders on the hook for his salary if he got hurt — was surprising if they are inclined to cut ties with him. That didn’t faze him either.

“Not at all. It’s a business,” Russell said. “That aspect, I don’t have anything to do with that. It’s a higher level than me. My job is to keep coming and competing every day.”

His job is also to answer the media’s questions. He should not need Anderson to cut off reporters’ questions — as was the case when Russell got asked, (1.) if Cable called him after the trade for Campbell; (2.) if he expects to be the Raiders’ starting quarterback in Week 1; (3.) if he could tell us his ideal playing weight, a question that prompted Anderson to end the interview session.

If Russell is to be the starting quarterback and serve as the face of the franchise — the latter is part of his job description so long as he is employed here — then he must answer every question himself, even if it warrants a “no comment.”

His on-field demeanor, however, is what mattered more Friday. He looked good. He looked better than Campbell, Kyle Boller and Charlie Frye, who took the initial snap with the first-team before Russell got his turn, followed by Campbell and then Boller.

Russell zipped mostly short-range passes to the Raiders’ still ridiculously raw receiving corps. His third pass was his longest, a 35-yard spiraling lob that landed in the hands of rookie Jacoby Ford, who fell down while catching the slightly underthrown pass.

Any good GM would be trying to get whatever value established for JRock that you can

I still say cutting him’s the best option, but am not ruling out Al somehow working some kind of deal and coming out smelling like a rose on this one.

You never know.

There always seems to be some GM thinking that they can get blood from a turnip.

we just returned from the Hilton

which is a sad place. Last week we heard Al lives there now – this must be his desert experience. No Raiders in sight – they must be a. exhausted, and b. scared of drinking during minicamp. As if. The beer there is so flat, you drink it to sober up. People were kind though.
