Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Learning from our past mistakes.....

I love this team to death but man after watching this team for so many years I just knew mcnabb wouldn't come to the raiders under the conditions we're going through right now. If I was a player all honesty I don't blame him, besides the raiders don't need another QB. Like it would make any difference with how the way our coaching staff is right now. Reading the body language of our team, they're not there to play the game to really win. People are just worried about how much money their getting look at what happened to Javon Walker for example. As for right now I'm not really impressed on how the way this off season is going all we done is resign players that brought us to these 5-11 season's to start off with. An Offense of tackle ((I'd rather build up the Defense tho)) would be Okay however we don't need another track runner on this team that doesn't know the game of football. I fear of the raiders drafting Bruce Campbell cause, he might just end up like the butterfingers kid we drafted from maryland again. Al knew football back in the days but lately it seems like speed has became his biggest weakness. Does Fabian washington ring a bell... Defense wins championships if you ask me we really need to go after some DT's and Linebackers to stop the run then get a OT in the 3 or 4 round. ~Silver and Black colors until I DIE!~ Suleku

Winning solves everything

If we were 9-7 last year we’d be talking about the drafts Mr. Davis hit on (ie Zach Miller, M. Bush, Louis Murphy, Nnamdi). Then again, if my Aunt had a dick she’d be my Uncle. McNabb was a fun thought but again would come down to wasting a ton of money. We beat some good teams last season and our roster is pretty young. Another season of continuity and growth, we may be a bigger draw to potential trades/free agents. Until then, draft on both lines. I disagree with your “body language” statement. Grads, Murphy, T Howard, Nnamdi, Seymour, get plenty fired up play.

One decent season last season would not have made up for the abysmal six previous seasons prior to that. We’d just be looking to the future a little more.

Agreed

Nobody respects this team in the NFL because we have the worst coaching staff around. Then we put this awful offense out there and expect to score. We have 2 QB’s and I have no faith they produce a winning season or 21 ppg. Our offensive line is just that offensive to watch. Really we don’t have any proven parts on offense. Our defense is above avg. but gives up too many 20+ yards plays.

Can we just forget the mock drafts since SkALetor is going to pick whoever he thinks looks good in S & B?

I think we should do a post of guys we hope he doesn’t pick. Taylor Mays, Dez Bryant, Bruce Campbell (unless its with the 39th pick), Tim Tebow…

I like when people are "like this"

Yay! The raider are shopping for McNabb! I hope we get him! He would definitely help us out!

Then…

I knew he was not coming to raiders. I am not surprised. We sucked for so long, I don’t think mcnabb would ever sign with us if he had a chance.

I mean… really? I mean, tough s**t he signed with another team, but still though, don’t end up complaining about it saying it’s because “we suck and no one would ever sign with us.” Just look forward, and forget about it, don’t just hang on it and complain.

This was just something that I’m irritated with.

Most of us didn't jump on that bandwagon

and believed in Bruce. Let’s try this again:

In Bruce, we trust…

That's my point!

We means jackshit to him. Also why do you refer to him as Mr. Davis? Is he your boss or something?

by TAW on Apr 5, 2010 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

MR.

He deserves the title. Almost like a doctor. Many of his former players still refer to him as Mr. Davis. I’m not hoping he dies any time soon, but I can’t wait to see the league honor him by putting his initials on every team’s jersey when he does. Especially Shanarat’s squad.

by golfswithglock on Apr 6, 2010 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions

so your saying

just because “we” may mean nothing to al davis, we should stop saying “In Bruce We Trust?”

by patriotguy2 on Apr 5, 2010 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I like it, but in a way it put's too grandiose a title on him, and therein, a connotation

we believe he’s “the second coming,” or something.

If saying we believe he’s earned the right to start and we trust in him to lead us to victory and people think we’re comparing him to Johnny Unitas, than calling him “almighty” will definitely be misconstrued.

In Bruce we Trust BUT,

We still need a young QB in the 4th to groom. (Brown, Skelton or Robinson)
And the draft best available players of positions of need and Fuck the speed (doesn’t mean shit if you can’t catch, block or tackle) a Balanced team is the Best Team!
Bruce is a good leader and motivates the players on offense which is great but he can’t do it by himself.
My take is draft defense, kinda old school striking fear in opponents the Raiders of old!
Plus isn’t Cable an OL genius that can make a 3rd OT great?

As much as I like the Raiders of old

I don’t think that will work now-a-days. There are so many restrictions, and offenses are a lot more complex then it was back then. I think we should start like this:

Build both sides of the ball from the inside, out. Like:

Defense- Build it from the DL, then LBs, then secondary(since we already have a secondary, finishing up the DL, THEN improving the LBs should be how its done).

Offense- OL, to the QB, to the TEs, then RBs, then WRs. With a strong OL, they would be able to protect the QB better, QB should be better as the result of that, AND RB should be better as a result of that as well. TEs should be versatile in both blocking and passing, which we have, and as long as we have those, average WRs should be fine).

by patriotguy2 on Apr 5, 2010 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

If the offense fears to cross the middle

it doesn’t matter how complex the offense is it changes their game plan.

I agree build through the trenches DL and ILB and CB all long with OT,QB,OG and FB are priorities in this draft. Not necessarily in that order.

1) ILB 2)DT/OT 3)OT/DT 3)CB 4)QB/OG 5)OG/QB 5)FB it all depends on hows available.

of course

and I was just saying that offenses overall are very different from what the raiders of old faced.

by patriotguy2 on Apr 5, 2010 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

ditto

unless we trade out, then it’s the same, but starts with DT, then OT second, and down the way, but with there being three seconds, we can go OT, DT, OT, or DT, OT, OG.

See how trading down gives us new possibilities? Not a bad choice considering the first rounders after the top five have big question marks, short of Haden, and we all kinda agree we should do something else, though I won’t be too mad at Haden, so long as the OT, DT, MLB theme stays afterwards.

I like the TE idea in the 6th.

As long as he’s a big run blocking TE. Pretty much a offensive lineman with a receiver number.

If the terminator John Conner at FB

is there in the 5th or 6th he be a huge value

We got a blocking TE in Myers last year who turned out to be good.

While I see your point

I have to disagree with going D in the first rounds. Defense no longer wins championships, high powered offenses do. I have to go with O line all the way in the first, hell even the second! No QB can throw well on his back…

lol they don't now.... o.o! That's a crazy statement

How about them 1990 bills, 1983 redskins , 2007 patriots? and most recently the colts. Seems to me the defense of those winning teams shut the jaws on those highly powered offense! The leagues best D will always dismantle the best O, I thought we as raider fans would’ve already learned that by now.

Didn't the Patriots and Colts lose when it mattered the most?

If Defense won games, The Jets would currently be Super Bowl champs. Im a firm believer that you need a strong D enable to win, but you need some sort of a offense. Which the Jets did not.

just want to point out

the defense won the saints game, the giants D in 07 was a HUGE part of that win, Pittsburgh, the best defense in the league beat the Cards and Fitzgerald. Those are of the last 3 years.

The teams that make the SB, usually have an above average defense. Also want to point out that both the Saints and colts defense last year was above average.

by patriotguy2 on Apr 6, 2010 3:56 AM PDT up reply actions

The Jets with their D and the Cards with their O could only take them to a point ... true stremph is in balance

same goes for having great specialty players without strong trenches – won’t take a team far enough.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Apr 6, 2010 6:17 AM PDT up reply actions

just saying defenses are huge in the nfl still, and its not all about the "high powered" offense style.

Cards are a good example of that as well, and your right,, the more balanced the team, the better.

by patriotguy2 on Apr 7, 2010 3:33 AM PDT up reply actions

We need to trade down,

and get more picks.

It will also make our choices easier.

But as far as learning from our mistakes, we’ll probably get a left tackle, and still suffer on the right side because nobody will catch on.

Hopefully, Haden will be available, and make the #8 choice easy for us.

by xville on Apr 6, 2010 7:26 AM PDT reply actions

We almost certainly have to trade down & collect picks to move up late in the 1st.

Anthony Davis should be available around the 17 to 20 range & seems to be the most natural fit at RT out of the prospects mentioned. He has long arms unlike Bulaga who looks more like a guard. If we can package the 2nd pick & move up we can get Patrick Robinson from FSU who I think is a better cover corner than Haden. We get 2 starters who can help RIGHT NOW meanwhile still getting more picks.
