Raiders Camp Battles- Offensive Line

Additions-  Jared Veldheer OT, Bruce Campbell OL, Daniel Loper OG.

Lost- Cornell Green.

Loper played some games with the Lions and will be used for depth. If he couldn't start with the Lions he won't start for the Raiders.

Jared Veldheer

"Small-school standout Jared Veldheer to compete for time at offensive tackle. Though he dominated inferior competition in college, his impressive performance in pre-draft workouts showcased his immense potential as a pro". - NFL.com

"A small-school developmental guy who has as much upside as any offensive lineman in the draft. Veldheer is a bit short-armed but is a good athlete who has the range to hold up in the pass game at the next level".- yahoosports.com

" Veldheer won’t have any difficulty adjusting to the NFL and will compete for a starting spot right away."-Tom Cable

I don't know much about him and couldn't find any tape but he sounds like the real deal.

Bruce Campbell

"The Raiders pick up the most athletic offensive tackle from the NFL Scouting Combine with their selection of Bruce Campbell. Though many expected the team to nab him in the first round, the Raiders patiently waited to acquire him with the 106th pick. While he is raw in several aspects of his game, Campbell's outstanding athleticism gives him a chance to develop into a solid player in time". NFL.com

"A good value for the Raiders in the fourth round as Campbell has as much upside as any player in the draft. He's a physical freak with elite tools but still has a long way to go from a technique standpoint". -Yahoosports.com

"Bruce Campbell has been switched to guard so he can get playing time as a rookie".-Tom Cable

Bruce played in the Zone Blocking system at Maryland but has footwork problems. If he switched to guard for playing time could he be starting at some point this season? I mean why not? I'd rather him be in and do below average but improving then having a vet do below average who is past his prime and really won't improve.

Left Tackle

Mario Henderson started there last year. I'm not buying the whole he will be ok if Gallery is next to him. Now he shows flashes but is not consistent but then again 75 percent of the young players show flashes but aren't consistent. I see a triple threat boiling up here between Henderson, Barnes, and Veldheer. May the best man win.

Week 1 prediction-I'm going all in here. Jared Veldheer

Left Gaurd

Robert Gallery owns this one. If he can stay healthy. That's a big if. He does make the players around him better but he can't do everything by himself. If he goes down again early he needs to be replaced. God for bid with hm injured we could be looking at a backup lion as the starter.

Week 1 prediction- Gallery

Center

Samson looked alright to me when he played but he could look better. He needs to step up and take controll or we will be selecting a C wih our 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft.

Satele wins.

RG

Another triple threat between Coop,Walker and Campbell. As i stated above  I'd rather Campbell be in and do below average but improving then having a vet do below average who is past his prime and really won't improve.

Coop starts week 1 but Campbell finishes week 1 and starts week 2.

RT

We really don't have pure RT. So one of the two who dosen't win LT will play here. Walker and Campbell might see time here as well.

Mario Henderson becomes a solid starter and owns this spot for the next 6 or 7 years.

If Veldheer can start at LT Week 1, great! But I doubt he can..That's asking alot form a guy who

hasn’t played a snap in the NFL..So, I’d keep Hendo at LT, and Veldheer at RT.. I also doubt Campbell will start that early. I think it’d be smart to groom him under Walker, then when he’s ready, bring him in.

Langston Walker

is returning to the RT position.

Vote

I voted one or two. There was no category for possibly three. Not unsure about LT, C, RG, RT at this point and what about injuries during training camp?

Duh

Not unsure, how about I am unsure. Public schools for ya.

OL is full of ?'s

LT – I see Barnes and Henderson competing here, with Veldheer still a year or two away. That really isn’t a problem, as he wasn’t expected to come in and win a starting job right away; there is a reason that they are called ‘projects’. Henderson was very inconsistent last year, and his play really tailed off in the last quarter of the season. Barnes’ natural position is LT; I see Barnes beating out Henderson here, IF he is allowed to compete; he may be kept on the right side.

LG – There is no question here, it will be Gallery. Loper will be the backup, unless he wins the RG spot, and Parsons is a dark horse.

C – Satele’s spot to lose, apparently, although I am still not sold that he will step it up to the point needed. He showed better at the end of last season than the beginning, but no more than average at best, IMO. Morris is best suited for spot duty.

RG – I’m guessing that it will be Carlisle, unless Loper is able to beat out both he and Campbell, who I don’t know will be ready to make a true challenge yet. If Loper is able to, then that will say something about both Carlisle and Campbell, that a backup on an even worse team can win a starting spot here…

RT – If Walker is brought back to this position, I think he would win it, assuming that he drops weight. If that happens, then Barnes battles for the LT spot, which I think that he could win. Whoever loses that battle would then become the default backup.

What I’d like to see, as of this moment (training camp and pre-season could make a difference, obviously):

LT – Barnes/Veldheer
LG – Gallery/Loper
C – Satele/Morris
RG – Loper/Campbell
RT – Walker/Henderson

We’ll see what happens…

Failure builds character; success reveals it

Barnes is getting all of his reps at G so far.

I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

I hope it is because of Walker taking over the RT spot

and less because Barnes sucks.

That would kick some serious ass...

although I am taking him as running with the second string OL at LG as a sign this may not be the case. I don’t think it’d take much to seize the starting RG spot.

Loper sucks, dude.

I’d rather have Barnes or Walker there..Then Hendo at LT with Barnes or Veldheer at RT.

Like Walker at RT, Hate Barnes at LT, Satele for sure (Morris will be cut. Q: who backs Satele at Center?...Veldheer?)

If Veldheer could usurp Mario – great. I wonder why they’ve tried him at Center though (aside from Satele not really having a viable backup).

by Sons-of-Blanda on May 20, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

They almost have to keep Morris because of his versatility...

It would be bold to use Veldheer as the C back-up. Instead of interviewers asking Cable 40 questions to get Cable to comment on Russell, it’d be nice if they asked a question or two his plans for the o-line.

Right into the back of his head...

Even with his knees bent, he’d still be bigger than the average Center. If Bruce starts, the poor guy wouldn’t be able to see what so ever

i think alot of ppl are giving campbell the right look…he most likely wont be playing guard..he actually probably has a good chance to start at tackle..he has extreme athletic ability and alot of scouts said he was actually a good pass protector…dont be surprised if by training camp hes getting looks at both tackle spots….my ideal line would be campbell gallery satele walker veldheer..i think that line is big very strong interior and athletic at the tackle spots

by pablopaul25 on May 20, 2010 3:55 PM PDT reply actions

I think the 2 rookies do have a shot to start this year actually assuming we don't bring anyone else in.

They’re giving Veldheer the majority of the starting reps at tackle instead of Walker. I believe he (Langston) is going to be a huge factor but mostly as depth since someone will get hurt. Also Campbell may eventually take over for Carlisle if he catches on quick enough. I believe the team will really want him to take over making 4th rounder $$ instead of a 32 yr old guard making $2.5 mil per. Also Campbell played in a ZBS out of Maryland so he may actually find it an easy transistion from tackle to guard. I actually voted for all 5 & yes I do have a life.

Center

The Raiders had something like three centers in their first 35 years. It would be nice to find a center to be there for the next ten years as Jake Grove was supposed to be.

Yup

I had to honor to see all of them play at the Coliseum. Mosebar would have played longer if that damn Cowboy had not poked him in the eye.

Um...unfortunately only 4 of those Super Bowls had one of those men at Center :(

Great question,

I do know that the particular center in question would have walked away from the crash in a slight daze failing to notice the shrapnel sticking out of massive frame.

I don't think there is an isolated enough spot on this planet for Russell

to fall and not have anyone hear it.

JaMarcus tried to shit in the woods but his crap missed the woods and was picked off by the ocean.

Trick question

JaMarcus only hears JaMarcus.

Wish I could be as confident about Veldheer as you are

but don’t doubt your logic. I really watched Mario play, and he is no pro bowl caliber LT. Solid at times, below average to average most of the time. Can he get much better? I think he was playing his best last year, so Jared could win the spot. I do hope you’re right about Mario winning the RT spot for the next six years. I hope it’s not because we don’t have anyone better.

The good thing is,we don’t face as many premier defensive ends this year, so the guys can be started at the right times to get their sea legs. I still feel very uneasy about the pass protection.
