Raiders grossly underestimated ... good, enjoy your deception while you can

NFL.com Senior Analyst, Pat Kirwan is as bored as most of us and amusing himself by projecting a tiered categorization of NFL teams. He scorns the Raiders, takes a conventional position based on inertia and a perceived status quo- here's what he has to say:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8184857e&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

I'll save you the trouble and paste what he wrote...

Tier 1

Indianapolis Colts -- Peyton Manning is calling the plays and executing the passing game like a surgeon. The Colts were 6-0 in the division last year and had the top conference record in the NFL at 10-2. They went 14-2 last year without Bob Sanders or Anthony Gonzalez.

New Orleans Saints -- Drew Brees led the Saints offense to 510 points (31 per game) in 2009 and of course a Super Bowl victory. A second year in defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' scheme will make that unit even more effective.

Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings are up this high because I believe Brett Favre is coming back and the "Williams wall" will avoid the four-game StarCaps suspensions this season. Minnesota was one of just two teams that went 8-0 at home last year and they seem to have the Packers' number.

Dallas Cowboys: Some think this is too high for the Cowboys, [count me among them] but their quiet offseason, quality roster depth (outside of safety), and quarterback Tony Romo finally getting a playoff win set the stage for a big season in 2010. The Cowboys' defense only gave up 250 points last year (15.6 per game).

San Diego Chargers: Philip Rivers is the best quarterback in the division, the team went 11-0 to end the 2009 season and running back Ryan Mathews will have a solid rookie season [until week 5 then its over for the shuffler cause we don't arm tackle any more] replacing his boyhood idol, LaDainian Tomlinson. The rest of the division is closing in but all three teams are a year away from bringing the Chargers down. [we'll see about your time-frame Patty boy]

Green Bay Packers: The Packers had the top rushing defense in the NFL last year. Aaron Rodgers has plenty of receivers to throw to and the offensive line lucked out when Bryan Bulaga fell to them in the first round. The Packers allowed 68 total points in two games vs. the Vikings last year. They have to find a way to change that or it's wild card time again.

Tier 2

New York Jets: The Jets are a "hot" team, but do the acquisitions of Santonio Holmes, Antonio Cromartie and Tomlinson offset the losses of Thomas Jones, Alan Faneca, Jay Feely and Leon Washington? Who wins the next chess match between Mark Sanchez and NFL defensive coordinators who studied the second-year QB all winter?

Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens finally got Joe Flacco some receiver help and he is ready to get the ball to Anquan Boldin and Donte' Stallworth when teams overplay Ray Rice and the run game. I still wonder about Baltimore's cornerbacks and the pass defense.

Cincinnati Bengals: Many people have simply disregarded the Bengals and their 6-0 division record last season as a one-time event. Cincinnati established a solid running game and this year, with new weapons, the passing game should come alive.

New York Giants: The Giants defense still has question marks, but the offense has firepower. The young wide receivers were a major concern this time last year, but they developed nicely and turned a weakness into a strength.

New England Patriots: Lots of people are predicting the demise of the Patriots, [slowly and surely] but I don't see a doomsday scenario in New England. Brady led the No. 3 passing attack last season in his first year back from a knee injury, throwing 28 touchdown passes to just 13 picks. He will be better this season. The Pats have a tremendous home-field advantage (8-0 in the 2009 regular season) and an improved defense that gave up just 17.8 points per game last year.

San Francisco 49ers: The Niners are a "hot" team poised to take the next step. They play very good defense (17.6 points per game) and quarterback Alex Smith is ready to play winning football. Look for WR Michael Crabtree to have a fine season and remember the Niners beat Arizona twice last year.

Tier 3

Philadelphia Eagles: I think the Eagles are in for a little of what Green Bay went through when they traded Brett Favre two years ago. Kevin Kolb appears to be a fine prospect, but he will have some growing pains.

Arizona Cardinals: Kurt Warner retired and the team lost a half dozen players in the offseason during free agency. The defense needs time to gel and the QB situation needs some patience. Last year, this team was only 4-4 at home and was swept by the 49ers.

Atlanta Falcons: I like the progress QB Matt Ryan has made and with the addition of Dunta Robinson at corner, the defense should match up better against the Saints. Atlanta lost to New Orleans twice last year by a combined 11 points and should be right back in contention with the defending champs.

Pittsburgh Steelers: If Ben Roethlisberger is going to serve his full six-game suspension, then this team drops to Tier 4. I know the Steelers have a lot of pride and the defense and running game will be the focal points until Roethlisberger returns. But Pittsburgh still has issues at cornerback, and the Ravens and Bengals will go after the Steelers with their ramped up passing attacks.

Miami Dolphins There's a lot riding on the arm of second-year starter Chad Henne down in South Florida. The addition of Brandon Marshall, a perennial 100-reception receiver, will loosen up the running lanes for Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. It will be very interesting to see how the Dolphins manufacture sacks with the loss of Joey Porter and Jason Taylor.

Washington Redskins: The addition of a proven head coach, general manager and quarterback has changed everything for the 'Skins. Last year, Washington scored 17 or fewer points 11 times. Not many teams can win that way. Donovan McNabb is not going to let the offense repeat those numbers in 2010. He energizes the 'Skins the way Favre ignited the Vikings.

Tier 4

Houston Texans: This is the third year in a row the cries to elevate the Texans into Tier 2 are loud and clear. They lost offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, linebacker Brian Cushing starts the year with a four-game suspension and they let their best corner, Dunta Robinson, go in free agency. Plus, the Texans still have to clear a hurdle known as Peyton Manning if they are ever to win the division title.

Tennessee Titans: Vince Young is steadily becoming a winning QB in the NFL. I would doubt if Chris Johnson misses any real time over his contract. Jeff Fisher has a youth movement going on but the Titans don't have to dismantle the whole roster to get back into Super Bowl contention.

Chicago Bears -- My good buddy, former Bears QB Jim Miller, thinks the Bears will win 11 games this year. I'm not sure the team has that many wins in it, but I do think Jay Cutler will benefit greatly from offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Chicago is a classic Tier-4 team that could jump up and surprise people. Julius Peppers helps the defense and it's time for the current players to answer the criticism coming from retired Bears players taking shots at the team.

Carolina Panthers: Some pundits think the Panthers have been dismantled and need to be in Tier 5. Others think they are a solid Tier-2 team. Considering they will have an inexperienced quarterback under center and must replace five to seven starters with their own backups, I think they belong right here. But who replaces the backups? The answer is draft picks and rookie free agents. If the injury bug hits, that spells trouble for special teams.

Seattle Seahawks: Pete Carroll will energize the organization and if he gets 16 games out of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, the Seahawks will be competitive. The division race tightened up when Kurt Warner retired. Seattle still needs to find a pass rush after giving up 245.4 passing yards per game last year.

Denver Broncos: Broncos fans looked up one day and their favorite stars -- from head coach to quarterback and finally receiver -- were gone. Now they may be asking, "Where do we go from here?" If rookie QB Tim Tebow plays this year, the Broncos are officially a Tier-5 team.

Jacksonville Jaguars -- No one is talking about the Jaguars this offseason unless it is to speculate about their coach being on the hot seat. The Jags have been in this situation in years past and have responded to the challenge. The young wide receivers showed lots of promise last year and RB Maurice Jones-Drew told me last week he needs to be the No. 1 fantasy draft pick this year because he's ready for another big season. Quarterback David Garrard needs to improve and early reports out of Jacksonville say he's headed in the right direction.

Tier 5

Kansas City Chiefs: In each of the past four seasons, one team in the NFL has gone from last to first in its division. Many people feel the Chiefs have the best chance to continue the trend in 2010. Losing to Buffalo and Cleveland late in the year is a reminder that there is still lots of work to do. Coach Todd Haley is a year wiser and he told me he feels the locker room is now filled with guys who understand what it takes to win.

Oakland Raiders: Lots of optimism in Raider Nation with JaMarcus Russell out and Jason Campbell under center. Campbell is better than Russell for sure, but he is still a work in progress and isn't an instant winner. He needs lots of help from the supporting cast. The Raiders beat Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Denver last year, which, for a team that averaged 12 points per game, is no small feat.

Cleveland Browns -- If Jake Delhomme has something left, then Cleveland is a solid Tier-4 team. Keep in mind they won four straight to end the season last year and there is positive energy coming out of the combination of Mike Holmgren and Eric Mangini. There's just too much work to be done in this rebuild to think 2010 is the year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: I really like the Buccaneers' second-year QB Josh Freeman, but he needs more than half a season under center to be ready for a playoff push. It will be interesting to see how the rookie defensive tackles, Gerald McCoy and Brian Price, fare in their first season on the field. The Bucs are headed in the right direction and should be tougher in the second half of the season.

Detroit Lions: No doubt head coach Jim Schwartz is the right man for the job and the team is headed towards respectability, but the Lions have a long way to go. Matthew Stafford faces the second-year challenges all young QBs face and the O-line has to keep him upright. The defense will be built around Ndamukong Suh, but it takes a lot more than one rookie tackle to help the 32nd-ranked defense in the NFL. They will win more games this year than they have in the past three years, but they are simply not ready to collect more wins than losses.

Buffalo Bills: I will get some negative comments about the Lions being ranked ahead of the Bills, but Buffalo has many problems. Who is the QB? Who blocks the edges in the protection schemes? Who replaces the production WR Terrell Owens delivered last year? How does a defense that gave up 156.3 yards per game on the ground get better when the front office took a running back in the first round of the draft and converted to a 3-4 scheme?

St. Louis Rams: The Rams made the right decision taking quarterback Sam Bradford in the first round, but it also means the rebuild is going to take time. No one wants to hear it, but Rams fans still have to be patient.

a little rich with an unproven QB. I don’t mind the Raiders flying under the radar, it will give us a chance to sneak up on the competition.

Interesting...

While I don’t disagree with the Raiders rank, I disagree with some others..

Tier 2- The New York Giants do not deserve to be ranked in group # 2. Eli Manning is extremely overrated and without that “Giants D”, they won’t impress anyone..

Tier 3- Pittsburgh is without Big Ben for 6 games, and it’s obvious they suffer without one of their stars..As in when Polumalu was out, they lost numerous games to very bad teams..

This dude has a serious hard on for Washington, after a 4-12 season, he puts them above Houston and Tennessee? Thats bullshit. Donovan McNabb is in decline, and they still have a feeble O-line.

Tier 4- I have no clue why this guy has Houston and Tennessee in such a low group..Maybe it’s because they’re in the same Division as Indy, but still! Houston has a Top 5 QB and a Top 5 WR and a superb Defense.. Tennessee has the “new” Vine Young and the best RB in the NFL, Chris Johnson. It almost discredits this guys whole article.

Tier 5- I love Oakland, but they deserve this ranking. Until we prove it on the field, we don’t deserve a higher ranking. Now, I believe Detroit will shock everyone this year. They have so many weapons and have improved in almost every aspect of the game. They deserve to be ranked in Tier 4, in my opinon.

2010, the year Oakland regains dominance..

I agree about us.

We still haven’t shown anything on the field. If our defense comes out playing man to man every down. We are going to lose and stay at the bottom.

by Micheal Y on May 25, 2010 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

What about the offense?

I think the offense held this team down much more than the defense last year.

I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

by Rich Langford on May 25, 2010 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah our offense

stinks. I hope to see a better offensive line, run game, passing game, and wr’s need to step up and catch the ball. I think we could have great Defense if they are allowed to play and use there range like the Saints. We almost never get any turnovers becuase every QB knowns what we are running.

by Micheal Y on May 25, 2010 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with our ranking until we change the way the media percieves us.

You are right on about the defense. We must show different schemes because our players can’t just line up & beat the other team man to man. Especially since we are so undersized in the middle of the line. Thank god we drafted McClain otherwise out MLB would be undersized as well. Also if we do show more unpredictability on defense that would lead to more sacks & of course turnovers. Turnover ratio is the highest factor in wins and losses usually.

by TAW on May 25, 2010 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Eli over-rated?

I believe that sentiment is so over-hyped that he’s under rated now.

all the analysts were saying how good he was when he was traded to the Bears. it turns out he was just overrated and a turn over machine.

so I think with a little stability this team can make some noise

by word2bigbird on May 25, 2010 5:30 AM PDT reply actions

I don’t think we’ve done anything to warrant a higher ranking. We don’t belong those teams in tier four just yet. If we beat a few of them, and we do have four of those six teams on the schedule, we can move on up. Until then, though, we basically belong where we are.

I like the 49ers this year, but they’re too high for me. They haven’t made the playoffs in a while and didn’t make major changes, so I don’t think they should be classified as a level “B” team. They are certainly not at the level of a Baltimore, N.Y. Jets and New England. The Cardinals seem a bit high at tier three as well. They lost their most important offensive player.

by Rated-R Superstar on May 25, 2010 6:33 AM PDT reply actions

The 49ers are too high, but they may end up earning that spot. And I disagree about Kurt Warner being Arizona’s best offensive player. Without Larry, Kurt would’ve been a a run down old guy. Thats why I think they belong in Tier 3, Larry will make Matt that much better.

All Guess Work

Just writers being bored I guess. Since someone invented the term Rosterbation, how bout Rankerbation? Find out who comes out of the preseason without major injuries to start. Also, about 1/4 of the playoff teams from last year may not make the playoffs this year and vice versa. So, ranking on past performance is not all that accurate. Last year at week four Yahoo! Sports (sic) came out with the playoff picture. One quarter of the teams in the playoffs at week four did not make the playoffs and another one-quarter ended up in different seeds. Hence Rankerbation…

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on May 25, 2010 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

football is harder mostly because

the season is so short, one lucky game turns an 8-8 team into a 9-7 team with a possibilty of making the playoffs. I think if the season was longer you would see the better teams really proving they are better.

Without that sample size issue I think baseball would take the place of being hardest to project. The Mets, for example, were projected as high as world series participants but ended up with 100+ losses. The Mariners were supposed to lose 100+ games but actually went over .500.

The Raiders Have To Prove It

…to everyone involved from the casual fan to the NFL analyst that this team deserves better recognition.
If they are as good as we hope they can be, attendance will increase, morale will increase, and we will have a fun entertaining season watching this team develop. No one wants to pay for a bad product which is what they have been for the past 7 years.

by TAW on May 26, 2010 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

they didn't suck last year

they were one of the top offenses, and had an above average defense last year(we got better defensively, and our offense was still VERY good despite our QB was having trouble with timing. Even though he had his second best year last year, INJURED by the way). we just couldn’t get it done when it counted in the playoffs.

I don’t think those 3 teams should be over the pats. Colts yeah, Saints yeah, but not those three. This is me not being biased, I truly believe this as a football fan in general. I just don’t think those 3 should be ahead of them.

Brady sucked the first half of the beginning of the season, due to an acl and mcl tear. he was inaccurate. That's why.

Then he picked up the pace later, and eventually got his second best season(keep in mind of his injury, and how it affected him in the beginning).

But because of his poor play, we lost games, but it’s BECAUSE of his injuries, which was the cause of his poor play in the beginning of the season, that our record was not spectacular.

I almost needed a different category to vote on this one, Sons

I’m torn on this one. I couldn’t vote “grossly deceived,” and when I went to posit my vote for the alternative, the “like Mel Kiper,” part, immediately swayed me.

I have a tremendous respect for PK, and have had the good fortune to speak with him and Tim Ryan on their Sirius NFL show (yes, I’m one of those football talk radio geeks listening mostly to that, and finding calling in and waiting a half hour to talk for maybe a minute irresistible somehow) about many things football, but always pertaining to the Raiders.

Needless to say, my optimism over whatever new nugget of info with which I’d armed myself has always been quickly grounded by Pat, a very frank and terse, tells it like it is former GM and solid analyst, and his cohort Tim Ryan, former player, and perhaps one of the best analyst/ commentators on TV. Both regulars on many networks nationwide.

Don’t get me wrong: we could upset many folks this year, and aside from his placing us on the fifth tier, his commentary about us wasn’t all that bad. I believe, keywords: unproven.

The wiser in the media will not hype a team based on its first solid draft in maybe the decade, and certainly not because it finally rid itself of its most obvious cancer, much too late. My optimisim is evidently tempered with a healthy dose of let’s win a couple of games in a row and stay above .500 for awhile before we talk.

We should be surprised we finally get a little respect from the media; I for one, find it beneficial to the psyche of the Raiders to be considered worst by the mainstream media.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Schedule Is What Makes Me Optimistic -w- Changes Made So Far

In our 1st 9 games we only meet 2 “PO” teams outside our division and we get them early on before they have time to get a full head of steam…Tenn has a few issues which when addressed may make them tougher to beat later in the season n “AZ” will be operating with a new starting “QB” who should still be feeling his way by the 3rd week when we meet…

The last 7 is where it could get much tougher…Even in "KC"s bitter cold if their program gets off the ground this season….That will the toughest time to play them and possibly allot on the line…We hope!!!!/_

If Pat Kirwan seriously believe we're in the 5th tier after our coaching & philosophy upgrades, FA acquistions, A-grade Draft,

prudent releases, and comparing what other teams, like Denver and Washington (3rd tier?) did over the same period – then the media that Kirwan represents is grossly deceived about us. I’m just saying that they’re not seeing things like we are; they acknowledge the improvement we made for cutting Russell but fail to see how Jackson calling plays will also significantly boost us, McClain instead of Morrison will boost us, our STs (especially KR/PR) are improved, our DL and DL coaching is improved. What held us back last season? Run Defense, Poor play calling, poor usage of personnel, the QB, and a weak O-line. … the first 3 of these 4 issues have been significantly addressed/upgraded – that should have put us in the 3rd tier … Pat was playing it safe based on history; but history has shown how rapidly a team can turn things around, e.g. the 2000 Rams went from a worse record than ours to the SB the following year.

He is no doubt playing it safe; he does that

and that propensity of his belies his wisdom. I scratch my head about his tier placement considering Denver and the Skins. I’ll bet his tier placement is very dynamic these days, and we would see him and others view quickly change after preseason. I think it is not at all out of the question for teams like the Raiders to fly under the radar, and that folks like PK and others are less hip to whats happening with our team than the die hard amongst us are at the moment.

I’ll be very interested to hear what Kirwan has to say when he visits camp this year. Last year it was overwhelmingly about the stopwatch time on Jamarcus’ gettting the ball out. He consistently compared it to his timing at other camps. When they got it out in 2.5 seconds, you had teams that had success in the passing game last year.

Jamarcus will never, ever get that clock down. Like “Timma,” said, he’s a five pat guy.

I’m with you about how excited we are about this team, but they will remain under scrutiny until they prove they can win some games. The respect will come quickly with that. I believe the mere additions of McClain and Houston, and probably even Heard, which will stop the run, would have thrust us into the win column at least three more games, and I fully expect Hue Jackson and a wr corps and some great young backs with the growing pains past them to take a non-existent offense to one of the most prolific in the league.

We should be glad they cannot see what we see. I hope they continue to doubt, even after it is established we have nearly eliminated weaknesses to be exploited by our foes.

If we can win two games in succession - right away, Titans and Rams, we will passed two significant hurdles:

the rush defense issue and the focus issue. Then, the sky’s the limit.

You know the deal

After 7 abysmal seasons in a row, the Raiders need to prove something if they want respect. Especially with that rogue reputation and all. It’s just time that they finally show the NFL what they can do.

that "rogue reputation" doesn't apply anymore than our being a 5th tier team ... these guys are behind the curve and prove

they haven’t really been paying close attention to us, no doubt, because of our abysmal records these past depressing 7 years. But, if they were paying attention they would realize that through coaching and coordinator changes, the draft, FA, and releases, we addressed everything but NT – not counting OT b/c we took 2 OTs (though one is being converted to G).

Who care's what they think in May?

I understand you are upset about ranking us in tier 5 but honestly these projections mean nothing so why let them frustrate you? I think if there is a head-scratcher about Kirwan’s list is Seattle. Our draft was just as good as theirs and yet they’re in tier 4 and still have more question marks than we do heading into the regular season.

Yeah

But you know they’re not going to give respect til we put together a winning season, no matter what we did in the off season. A lot of looks good on paper, but until they hit the field, there’s no telling how it’s all going to come together. Disappointment’s become a way of life in Oakland. Once upon a time, I had high hopes for JaMarcus Russell. Apparently Al did too. So much for high hopes. With our track record, they’ve no reason to take us serious. Doesn’t matter though. Only ones that need to take us serious is the other teams.

But the Niners are a Tier 2 team somehow

What, because they play in a weak division? This is still a team that had to switch quarterbacks mid season with it’s share of question marks as well. I mean, watching Singletary play in Chicago back in the day, he had godlike status then, but as a head coach he’s got something to prove.

Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks
