Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Oakland Raiders beat writer Jerry McDonald discusses today's OTA practice in Alameda. McDonald says this is the best passing game he's seen in years with the team and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is very impressed with wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

This is the worst part of waiting, isn't it?

When we’ve just gotten through the draft, and there’s still 3 months til the season starts. Especially with camp looking better than last year. Jerry Mac doesn’t have a whole lot to write about, meanwhile we’re all dying for new info to see how the rookies, etc. are looking. It’s like being stuck in limbo or purgatory.

I just hooked up flights and tickets to be in Nashville for week 1 and my Mike Mitchell Jersey is in the mail hopefully

I’m super happy that we have this blog to talk Raiders everyday otherwise i’d go nuts!
Jerry Mac is great and imo the only consistently trustworthy Raider msm reporter, glad he’s back from holidays Cam Inman is a hater.

I agree about the coverage...

J Mc seems the most unbiased and level headed to me.

I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

DHB BABY!!!

great to hear he is showing something, this will be great for his confidence as I’m sure having a QB that can throw you the ball on time helps also. I’m loving LaMarr Houston also, clearly has a mean streak about him got in a couple of scraps already, FIRED UP!

The posters on Jerry McDonald's blog are saying if DHB comes through this year who will the nation have left to hate.

Apparently none of them have heard of a certain DB named Stanford Routt. I hate him almost as much as Russell. At least Russell came in relief and won a game for us last year.

by TAW on May 26, 2010 3:45 PM PDT reply actions

The thing that sucks about the practice reports is that if one side looks good

it comes at the expense of the other. It was mentioned in J Mc’s twitter feed that DHB was coming, largely, at Routt’s expense. He also made it seem that as a whole the D struggled in Pass D today.

Still, I’ll take it and signs of life out of the passing game I can get.

Good news indeed.

He is bringing a level of intensity and expectation to practice. For a team used to losing, this is hueg.

but then you could look and say, well the pass D better the next day. Oh wow our pass offense sucks!

The truth is that in camp the offense eventually picks up on the defense’s calls. Then the defense changes it up and starts beating the offense. it’s a never-ending back and forth.

What we can take solace in, is that DHB was beating on Routt like a drum, just as every credible NFL receiver should. Where as last year, DHB was struggling versus John Bowie and Derrick Brown.

DHB was also beating Nnamdi (at least on one play) call it part of the back-and-forth or DHB finally becoming decent. Either way, if DHB doubles his production, I’ll be satisfied. I don’t think he should start, but if he does, it’ll be because he was better than Schilens or Murphy or Ford. And that would be huge.

Agreed about the back and forth.

We can be encouraged because the Raiders offense has been so pathetic that this back and forth hadn’t happened in a while. The defense had dominated. The fact that the offense is now pushing the defense is going to make ever facet of this team better.

that to me is REAL camp competition. The offense competing against the defense to see which is better. Hue Jackson has brought that to this team. While Cable brings competition to each individual position, Hue brings competition to each unit.

Both kinds of competition make for a successful football team. It makes things fun for the players, and that increases morale and improves the team while they’re having fun.

I hope Dmac getting flattened by a 10 year old is not a sign of things to come

who knows i guess, maybe he can play a little man coverage and take Routt’s job.

Congratulations Jailen :)

In DMC's defense, he was loosing his footing right before he got hit.

That was a great and uplifting story. For many reasons I hope Jailen gets to watch the Raiders and McFadden enjoy a great season!

More news and notes...

Tommy Kelly and Chris Johnson apparently had better shit to do then show up.

Bruce Campbell: "I was a left tackle, now I’m playing right guard," Campbell said. "It’s a totally different experience. I’m used to space on the outside. Now I’m on the inside with a lot of help. People would say it’s easier, but I don’t see it being easier right now."

With Warren gone Kelly may have found a fellow slacker in Johnson to team with

To answer JMac’s question, I’ve a jaundiced eye for the following: Stanford Routt, Tommy Kelly, Chris Johnson, and Darren McFadden. I’m open to the possibility of their proving me wrong.

4 guys with as much to prove as anyone on the team.

For Kelly and Johnson to not be is disgusting.

You can't make too much out of one day, but that's one day more than last year.

Hue Jackson turned around DHB’s career when he said, “uno dos, that’s fucking stupid. You need to be ocho cinco.”

nice

I watched the ghost to the post dvd the other day, I would love to see McFadden and Bush used like Clarence Davis and Mark Van Eeghan were, there were a ton of receptions out of the backfield on that team. I always forget how much I like MVE.

Per David White:
Rookie middle linebacker Rolando McClain looks either lost in coverage or unable to keep up. If he can stop the run as a rookie, the defense can pick him up in coverage.

Of more concern is outside linebackers Trevor Scott and Kamerion Wimbley in coverage at the same time. Not sure man coverage is their thing.

Could it be that the d is switching from watching RB kill them on rushes to passes? It should be interesting to see how this plays out. I think we can expect McClain to get better, but I don’t see how Wimbley and Scott will be able to play at the same time.

I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

by Rich Langford on May 28, 2010 3:31 PM PDT reply actions

Who was beating McClain? Marshall's guys are falling behind Jackson's and this is very odd b/c D is normally ahead of O

in the early going and our D is supposedly more mature – unless, 1. Campbell is making that big of a difference, or 2. Marshall has made radical changes that are taking time to absorb, or 3. both.
