Roster Cutdown #1: Trimming the Fat.

I've always been curiously amused by giving 5 players the pink slip...and then giving 23 players the pink slip a week later. What occurs in that week? Please comment if you know the logic behind this process.

Anyway, getting to the point. I am curious to take a sort of poll. After two decisive, albeit far from flawless, pre-season wins from our boys, who would be the first 5 men off the roster in your opinion? For extra points, give a little reasoning behind each one.

The reason I ask is because I've noticed a fundamental difference between this year's roster and last years. There are no JaMarcus Russel's and no Javon Walker's. Hell there aren't even Gerard Warren's who are willing to show up for half the season and consider that to be worth their contract. As has been repeatedly mentioned here at S&B Pride, and even on television, there is a passion from this year's team that starts at the anointed starters and ends with the un-drafted long-shots. Everyone is fired up and everyone wants their photo on Yahoo! Sports. Unfortunately, we need 52 to call the cream of our crop. so who are the first 5 to go?

Mine are as follows

1) Eric Butler - A temporary guy anyway. Only there to give starters a rest and compliment the bevy of 2 TE sets in Jackson's new playbook.

2) Shaun Bodiford - He miffed a punt. And has been mediocre in camp. The backup WR competition is very tight, and the aforementioned reasons are enough to get you canned.

3) Joe Porter - I've heard nothing and seen nothing about this guy during camp. His pre-season appearances have been forgettable, and similar to WR's, the backup DB competition is tight, plenty of other good options, so he go's.

4) Chane Moline - See explanation for #3, except insert FB for DB.

5) Swayze Waters - We all know this one. Waters gives Jano and Lechler time to work on their fantasy teams.

I also think Waters will be cut

but he was awesome yesterday. Who’d have thought – a scrawny boy in a ballet position before kicking the ball! I mocked him the week before, but man, he has a leg!

Don't worry about Waters, he'll get picked up right away.

First Five to go:
Joey Thomas
Chane Moline
Allen Smith
Alex Parsons
John Owens

I was about to put Allen Smith. Until I caught that spot during a return from a commercial break during the Bears game where Cable had an arm around him explaining details of the following series. Cable’s favorite O-liner’s tend to stick around longer than their worth. See Cornell Green for proof. But as for the rest of your list, I agree wholeheartedly.

This is a very good post.

Swayze Waters and Shaun Bodiford were both on my mind when it came to cuts being made. I’m ashamed I haven’t even heard of two of the other three to be honest so the fact they have not shown anything means them being cut makes absolute sense. I would add Hiram Eugene. Jerome Boyd and Stevie Brown provide good, young depth and come cheap.

Agreed.

And I believe you are not alone in this sentiment. Eugene’s been forgettable all thru camp and during pre-season. The Safety position is crowded with talent and I tend to think coaches will give their draft picks preference over 2nd string vets who have already been given chances to do some good. Brown definitely stays, so I really think it’s Boyd vs. Eugene for the other backup spot.

Erik Pears...how in the hell is he still on the roster??

He’s replaced the sizzurp as Public enemy number 1 in my book.

He is a cheap tackle who will only get playing time if Veldheer, Campbell, Walker, Barnes or Snooki all go down with injury.

His contract isn’t really handicapping the organization. I’m surprised you’re that upset about his presence in silver and black. I think until Tommy Kelly comes out and buries Frank Gore next week and is the key to holding Chris Johnson to under 50 yards in Week 1 I’m still not sold on this guy.

Yea, I shudder with fear every time I see Pears waddle onto the field. But the O-line depth is pretty weak right now. After reviewing the entire roster its the only position that isn’t overloaded. If we’re done with the free agent market for now, then, sadly, we need him.

Is it too much of a stretch to think that we might go after a free-agent O-lineman before meeting the Titans? we got Seymour with one week to go and no forewarning, so I have hopes.

Its true that a deal can still be made.

Check the teams who are rich at the tackle position. Baltimore and Gaither are not seeing eye to eye on a new contract and he may be better than almost all the guys we have. If he could be the answer at LT then Mario may be safer at RT where I believe he can be protected from being exposed like he was last year.

I'm more upset about his presence in a uniform period.

He sucks OUT LOUD. And I’d rather have a rookie with potential than a guy with no business being in the league. I’d rather have Heard taking that space up.

+1

Complacency is what it is. Sit him or cut him and stick Henderson in there just to prove a point at least we know he brings some intensity every play whether or not he wins every battle he at least tries.

AND he doesn't eat up $55 million over 7 years to do it either.

He got paid $7.86 base salary last year per sack.

Exactly

That would allow us to pick up some help in other more needed and less stable areas such as WR or the O line

Do you think Kelly would redo his contract?

Now that he’s seen what happens to underperforming, high priced guys. I was appreciative of the fact he showed up weighing less. He seems much more motivated than in the past. But then again, it was like Routt’s performance against the Bears: Great, but when you get used to crap, a little Aqua Velva smells pretty good.

I doubt it

How many guys do you know that get a dump truck load of cash will say “could you please not pay me as much by taking the amount you pay me but just increase the number of years you pay me”. I highly suspect he is laughing no matter what. He already has what $15-20 mill in money taken from Al. So he is very comfortable with what he has now and even if we cut him someone will pick him up and give some $, not as much as Al did but he will still get $2-3 mill from some team some where.

To add to that, no he won't.

He knows his value so of course he won’t see another contract like that again. He has bad knees and is an under-achiever. He probably thinks like our worthless, FORMER walrus disguised as a QB that if he agrees to a pay cut it will make it that much easier for them to cut him eventually once the CBA and the cap is back intact since they won’t owe him any back pay. Also Routt made as many good plays as our rookie Walt McFadden and also one of those was a poor pass that was behind the receiver anyway. Routt should quit being the first to give himself a pat on the back for those plays.

i think we’ll see Moline hang around through this cut series. He’s right there in the fullback battle. Reese is pretty much guaranteed, but there’s a fierce battle between Tonga and Moline. Though personally I’d like Daniels to get a chance, but he’ll get practice squad.

also Porter may stick around since he and Joey Thomas are battling for roster spots. But I’m pretty sure the cornerback unit will look as follows.

Nnamdi
CJ
Routt
McFadden
Ware

Unless the team wants to keep 6 corners (they might with Nnamdi having a couple minor injuries the past couple years and CJ having a couple injuries as well), in which case Porter and Thomas will keep fighting for that spot.

Lead on the job goes to Thomas since he’s made a couple nice picks throughout camp and some nice plays against guys like Watkins and N. Miller.

Great post

Yeah I could only catch part of the game from where I live in Portland because of work. But I was really happy with most of what I saw. I am actually looking forward to this season (a change for last few years) Love this site and all the Raider insight and commentary. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more positive than negative this year!
