Talking Football With Niners Nation:
I started a thread on Niners Nation that is designed for Open Discourse with 49er fans about this week's game.
My friend and the lead writer on Niners Nation will also open a thread here in order to discuss his point of view on the Niners to date and what he is looking fr in this game.
Let's be respectful and respectfully clever and not trollish.
Go Raiders!!!

Damn. I was all ready to throw in my usual 1,000 cents...
and realized I had never joined the 49er site! Go figure!
Oh well, I’ll be able to post tomorrow over there. For the most part it seems we’re seeing eye to eye with most guys on MOST things. Emphasis on most. Ahem.
Also, that we feel our team is the stronger team; I’ve always held Singletary in the highest esteem, and love the direction he has their team headed. This will be the first good test of the season. Best team we’ve played by far.
I’m afraid our defense won’t be able to get through this one without significant help from the O, which will get it’s most prolific pass rush and formidable secondary since last season.
I’m looking forward to seeing Veldheer emerge as a proficient center, and to see DHB on the field. This is a keynote game for young Darrius, and I pray he begins his 2010 campaign to shut his haters TFU.

I was also shocked I couldn't post immediately after joining
Then again, that’s the first other site I ever joined.

The Niners, despite their verboseness are knowledgable, at least superficially. Much of the free-form analysis
today boiled down to this: we have uniquely similar teams. The 9rs are more like us than any other team out there. Strong D-lines and Linebacking, above average secondaries, young and deficient O-lines, powerful and fast running / receiving backs, terrific tight ends who are favored targets. There the parallel equation, however, ends b/c the QBs, Jason Campbell and Alex Smith are incomparable … and whether Boller or Bruce v Hill or Sputnik – I’ll take our QBs. Oh, WRs, well, that is one of the question marks, Morgan and Crabtree and ours. I like our STs over theirs and our Kickers vs Lee and Nedney. Bottom line: Campbell and Janikowski will be our deciding edge Saturday.

Well said. It'll be interesting since we mirror each other so much, and have kind of the yin yang in qb-wr
We have 4 capable qbs and 4 questionable receivers; they, the question is with the qbs, and the capable guys are the receivers.
Won’t it be a trip for our receivers to have a great showing, while Alex has his best showing in some time?
Outcome, Janikowski’s 40-50 lockdown range will win the game.

The Niners have been like the Raiders for the past 5 years. Strong defenses with incredible weak offenses. Our punters have been the teams MVP for the past 5 years.
"Dodger fans aren’t happy when foul balls get into their section, because it interferes with their playing with the beachball"- Mike Krukow
You don't account for Frank Gore?
Also never mentioned the rest of special teams. This weekend should be fun as Raider Nation gets to meet Anthony Dixon, the 49ers 3rd string half back, and the 49ers try to complete passes to Crabtree during the 1st half of the game against a good pass defence. Look for most of the passes to go his way.
The game means absolutely nothing
and the team who wins will only show their 3rd string QB is better than the other teams 3rd string DB’s. The game will be won or lost by guys who will be cut within two weeks, that is the truth about exhibition games. Cable said as much today when he talked about putting guys in certain positions to see which guys will make the team, and which guys will be cut.
I would not be surprised to see a few first team guys have mysterious ailments before the game and not play. If he plays, Gore will only play a series or two, and think the Raiders will do the same with a few key players. I would not be shocked to see Grad come in in the 2nd quarter, and DHB play no more than 2 series. Why risk an injury on a game against a team you are going to play in 6 more weeks?
As fans we wish our teams wanted to win as much as we want them to, but in reality, guys are protecting themselves right now, and coaches are protecting their players.
Ah, but I call the game virtually over when the starters depart. That's how we lost against Dallas 0-3 and Chicago 13-14
Even if it’s one quarter of Vernon Davis, Smith and Willis it will provide insight and I don’t believe anyone is going to play at 80% just b/c it’s preseason. Of course the game is primarily experimentation and individual display of ability before the great ax descends on 20+ necks – but for that reason too it’s well worth watching b/c of the college-like intensity in those who really want to make the team. I love preseason.

I agree on that
I also enjoy watching the guys who are trying to make the roster, and always hoping that one of them will come out of nowhere to be a really good to great player. I remember Schilens doing that a few years ago, and last year it was Nick Miller until he got hurt. I keep hoping Jacoby Ford is that player this year.
But guys like Seymour and Nnam?
You both have valid points, and I’m not ready to starting counting W’s based on any string in preseason. It does, however, demonstrate who has chemistry with whom, who will likely be cut, and who will be reluctantly cut, and might end up playing against us. It allows otherwise no-namers to put themselves on the map. It allows the team to try things they might never try when a season win is at stake. It allows teams to put up smoke screens as to what they’ll do; or it doesn’t.
It allows guys like Wimbley to get four sacks from a nickel formation he’ll rarely see twice in one half in a season game, much less four times.
It allows Wimbley to get some time covering TEs like Olsen, which he’ll probably spend little time doing, even from our 4-3 base/ man press typical formation we’ll see most of. It gives players, yet, one more reason to look forward to season play begin: camp coming to an end! Most players hate camp, especially towards the end. Especially guys like lineman, who have to spend long periods of time in stances, hot, cramping, nagging the injuries…
The outcome is always meaningless, while the game itself is anything but.

The first Q will be fun to watch.
These teams are mirror images of each other. As for us (the Raiders) as are O line goes so will the season go. I believe we have the advantage at the QB position and the first quarter will be fun, like a mini preview of the what we get in the ragulare season match up!
The starters will actually play the whole first half, like in the Bears game, we need the chemistry for the starters.
49ers will probably do the same..
The RaiderLaker
They may actually play into the 2nd Half:
This way they will get some experience going into the half, game planning and the executing the first drive after the break.

I believe that's to be expected in the third game,
but I believe “starters,” is a pretty relative term with this team right now, and in the third game. Also since we know guys like Veldheer are slated to start at positions already, it skews the whole thing on who starts and who doesn’t. That’s the beauty of real competition battles and actually having depth; one of the luxuries that’s a double edged sword is you’ll be so talented at certain spots you’re afforded the opportunity to waive some of the talent, and hope you did the right thing!
It’s where I take offense to the “meaninglessness,” of preseason, as it’s put. I love preseason. Don’t think the scores mean much, but it sure showcases talent.

Yes. Cutting back to two preseason games will cause coaches to become conservative, unwilling to experiment
and risk disaster or embarrassment during regulation. The preseason serves a good purpose, it’s good for football, and it’s good for America.
Thank you.

It's definitely silly, if you only designate two of the games as contests and not exhibitions
and it remains the same amount of games. It would definitely change the face of the game. Less time to eval. talent and more wrong guys would get cut, just for starters.
I see far more problems than positives. It’s about $$$$, of course.

Good stuff, tweet by Raiders beat writer Jerry McDonald:
New Raiders players’ T-shirts say ``Champions’’ and then underneath ``We are going to win the AFC West and then go after the Super Bowl.’’

Love that!
“We are the champions, my friend.”
Just believe.

Off Topic News Of "SD"-n-18 Game Schedule...
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AlELfOXDZ9YpfiijzXq3pRwdsLYF?slug=ap-chargers-jackson
They now have both their starting “PB” “WR”-n-“LT” suspended for the 1st 3 games…How sad…But should we be in the market for one of these players should a trade be possible…How about both..Now wouldn’t that make the "OldMan"s day…
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AlELfOXDZ9YpfiijzXq3pRwdsLYF?slug=ap-chargers-jackson
Owners want to go to an 18 games schedule while dropping off 2 preseason games and keeping the season within the 20 week schedule…But no mention of a Rookie Salary Cap…Could it be they push for the 18 weeks and than offer to take it off the table for the cap they wanted…
Any answers/speculations….
I wish we could swap Shillens and Higgins for Jackson
not that it would EVER happen, but it would be a nasty offense.
been saying it
and the chargers are hurting themselves by saying that theyll only deal jackson to seattle. im sure its just a ploy so that when they open him up to everyone, people will jump on it. otherwise seattle can sit back and work unpressured to get him which is not good…. stupid chargers….

Somehow Seattle is unhappy with TJ, if they get VJ they will cut him.
Would you guys want TJ Houshmandzadeh? They may cut him regardless if they get VJ…
The RaiderLaker
I don't know how much drive he has left to play
From a talent perspective, he’s better than anyone currently on the squad.
The Pacific NW is home for him. I don’t know if he’s just half-assing it cause he’s on he’s way out of the league or if he just got lazy being back home. Either way, I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the team.

He suffered from Hasselhurtback ly, and the qb position a lot
I don’t question his drive. I say he’d be totally worth it, if only for coaching up the youngsters.

There is one nation
As a Niners fan, the title of Niners Nation bothers me. Just like how it bothers me that other teams fanbases call themselves *"The Nation."
*Looking at you Red Sox fans
"Dodger fans aren’t happy when foul balls get into their section, because it interferes with their playing with the beachball"- Mike Krukow
Well we don't call ourselves the Nation.
It’s called Niners Nation because the blog network we’re on is SB Nation. And most of the good names were taken, and NN is a pretty darn good URL.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
I just think it's over used
The Bucs SBN blog ends with Nation as well.

What would be a "better" name?
I don’t know if Fooch would want to rename it, though.

Wow, that's weird...
Automatic strikethrough…this site is goood! I guess the Raiders fans voted in less than a second.

Becoming a Team
I’m just glad to see we actually look like a team again. Guys look like they’re on the same page of the play book and are teaching those that need that extra help. That’s the most positive thing I have noticed. Which says volumes of the confidence they are developing as unit. That gives me hope for the season!

Got 5 on it
OK Raiders I don’t want to see another Napolean moment this time its on our side of the Bay but still I love these games just wish they counted for somethign other than a few guys making the team……….Not to dimish those guys efforts. I know they all are trying hard to live the dream.
But still GO RAIDERS!

Bay Area football:
The Niners’ organization is gaining traction to regain respectability, by hiring Singletary and knowing how he perceives the game; loosening up on the wallet and snobby-mindset-control factor are also pluses; the team itself seems almost ready to ‘represent’ again. …The Raiders’ (last but certainly not least!) organization has handed us our bumps and bruises but always stayed ‘true to the game.’ (Al is forever trying to win Super Bowls even if he makes the wrong decisions). The ‘Cable guy’ is ‘real,’ at least he has proven to be cool under the right type of fire (AD; and funk the wrong media types). Tom put together a Bill Walschesque(sp)-type draft this year, along with a true Raiders-minded staff and trades. The players are in a cohesive mindset for the first time since being back in ‘The Towne.’ Go Oakland Raiders!!! We shall reap good. …Bay Area football is coming BACK!, with pride, and we the fans would have it no other way! “Ye’a!”
+1
we have suspiciously similar teams talent-wise, wide open divisions more or less, and basically the same opportunity to make it to the playoffs.
i see us tying records in respect of two things. the difficulty of our shedules, and if we do both get to the playoffs, even if its just wildcards, who we get matched up against in the postseason.
that said im thinking about that video about madden and the raiders winning the superbowl against the niners, i think its very well possible. maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but most likely in the next few years
