Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

In Bruce We Trust.

September 14th 2009, Monday night football. After a good game of football with some questionable throws and penaltys the The Oakland Raiders lose 20-24 to the Chargers.

November 15th 2009, The Raiders lose to KC and everyone now knows we drafted a bust and the season is over.

Something strange happens. The next week Raiders beat Bengals 20-17. Now who made the difference.

Bruce Gradkowski started throwing 183 yards with 2 touchdowns might of been giving Miller and Murphy their two best games of the season.

Oh well there is no way the Raiders could do it again not the same team who got shutout against the Jets while Sanchez enjoyed a hotdog.

December 6th 2009, Raiders beat Steelers 27-24. Bruce throws more then 300 yards with 3 TDs. This one was actually Murphys biggest game with 2 TDs one being for 75 yards. We looked like an actually team with an actual QB.

The next week our poor Offensive line lets Bruce get smashed. A knee injury sidelines him for the rest of the season.

Bruce took this offseason to get into better shape. Left for 2 weeks but came back watched tape and worked some with Heyward-Bey and everything is looking great until the draft comes. First round we pass on Clausen, Bruce dodges a bullet on that one. We pass him on round 2 by now Bruce thinks he's on top of the world. rounds 3 and 4 we get OTs Bruce thinks " Finally some help" and then goes to check online to see if he can find some tape on Veldheer like the rest of us but upset because there was none. Now when he comes back to the TV he notices breaking news on the bottom of the screen which reads "The Oakland Raiders trade an undisclosed draft pick for Redskins QB Jason Campbell. What a stab in the back. Traded for a QB whos team did worse then us. WTF. Just to put icing on the cake Jason says he's the starter after an interview.

Bruce worked out and worked out. Until he got hert. He's been hert ever since.

Tomorrow night he gets a chance to prove that he is the Oakland Raider number 1 backup?

This just isn't right.

Bruce is good but Jason is better

I said way before when Jason first came in, Jason is the superior QB his numbers with alot less talent was better than Bruce and the competition he faced NFC east is stronger than what we face. By the numbers, Jason wins, by poise and pocket presence Jason is is better…dont get me wrong by all means im not turning my back on bruce what he did for us was amazing and behind him all the way, but i’d rather him at #2, he’ll be the best #2 QB in the league…with that i mean if for whatever reason Jason goes down or cannot p[lay any given week i wont be afraid bc it’ll be Bruce stepping in, so i still trust in him but i feel Jason gives us a better chance to win week in and week out

i have to agee

there is no dropoff with bruce. it seems like the team elevates its play when he is in the game.

by shanks on Sep 3, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Bruce seems to be a professional

I think he understands the team has the responsibility to strengthen the QB position. Bringing in Campbell is an upgrade over any of the guys on the team when we picked him up. He’s more experienced, improved each year, and has been groomed to be a starter. Bruce did deserve a shot to start, but hasn’t shown he can hold up well enough to do so and looks more like a great back-up to have. The outlook quarterback position for the Raiders has completely turned around in a year thanks to these two guys, and all we had to do was send Washington a 2012 4th round pick.

Given the injuries Gradkowski’s had, I’d be very concerned with him starting the season as a starter with Boller and Brennen as back-ups had the team not made the deal. From what I’ve read the team seems to be behind Jason Campbell and I think we should be too.

Just took autographs from the three qb's (skipped Frye)

Very impressed with Grad, who looked bloated earlier. Very impressed with Campbell too. Some portion of the fans obviously thought like you, b/c when Campbell went on stage and addressed us, some people booed.

I said in a comment to another post that Routt is unrecognizable. Bryant has balooned a bit much, and his arms looked flabby. Tom Campbell was on fire – never seen him more confident and aggressively positive!

by Spirals galore on Aug 27, 2010 6:25 PM PDT reply actions

Perhaps, like me

You have the same feeling that when the Raiders show their greatness, Cable will be tapped to do the Campbell’s soup ads! Just seems like that kind of guy.

People seriously booed Campbell? Give the guy a chance for crying out loud!

Don't shoot, I'm a man.

Yes.

And after today’s game, I think I know why. Grad gives us something Campbell can’t.

by Spirals galore on Aug 28, 2010 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard to quantify

and convey to some people the “guts and smarts” part of Grad’s abilities. That said, I do think that Campbell is (at this point) the better overall QB so he should be the starter. If he can’t cut it (have to give him a good chance though, he is new to the schemes and his teammates) or is injured, we have Grads. At least I hope he makes the team. Don’t like Boller as the #2 guy.

Football is a business

Therefore the Raiders are a business. Grads would be a very expensive 3rd QB if it were to be deemed by the management that Boller IS the #2.

by Rusty23 on Aug 29, 2010 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think they'll cut Bruce.

He’s too good as a backup – and from what I saw last night, he has some incredible influence on the team. That’s why if he keeps getting injured, they may decide to keep him as a coach.

When I met him on Friday, he was incredibly relaxed and confident – I don’t think it’s because he got some promises, it was very deep and authentic. The guy has a very realistic outlook on life, and that’s his strength.

by Spirals galore on Aug 29, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Expensive?

You mean the team that for some reason is paying Tom “my feet are in quicksand” Kelly 7.5 mill a year? The same team that offered Toast Routt a 1st AND 3rd tender? $500+k a year is not that much for a 3rd stringer.

I'm trying to find out how.

I saw 1.4 quoted numerous times but not sure how they came up with that number.

Don't shoot, I'm a man.

by Rusty23 on Aug 29, 2010 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Saw it quoted at 2 different levels

Tafur says 1.4 mill and McDonald said 1.8 mill. Assuming they are close to right (I know…when you assume…) that’s pretty expensive for a 3rd string guy. Of course, all of this is probably moot assuming Grads beats out Boller in the eyes of Hue, Cable and Al. I think he will now that he has a chance to play (great showing last night that I get to see once NFL network airs the game tonight) but I’m not the one making the call.

Don't shoot, I'm a man.

I love Bruce too; but your post is misleading and suggests he was betrayed when in fact the team was making a prudent decision.

I voted yes

However, his deserving it doesn’t necessarily equate to his having a chance. His work ethic is unquestionable, but, does he have the ability to be a game after game after game NFL QB? I don’t think so—-he is too fragile.

Yes

Once injured, alwyas injurable. People who want to sack him will go for the jugular – i.e., his knees. But he has a tremendous presence – what I saw today from him was absolute lack of self-consciousness (unlike Jason), and a lot of sheer joy and confidence. Grad is a future Raiders coach.

by Spirals galore on Aug 27, 2010 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Everyone then is injurable since all have been injured. Bruce is an oportunist and a very positive person. I won't be

at all surprised if he shakes off the rust and has a good game – but his first couple of series may be too ugly to watch.

In Bruce we Trust! But Al trusts JC a little more...

Bruce is the consummate professional. We needn’t worry about him, and instead he’ll be smart and await his opportunity, and when the getting is good, he’ll take it.

JC has the bigtime arm to play the Raider ball Al still wants us to at least be able to play; with Bruce, it’s not the strength of his game.

He’s no less a hero to me. I watched every game where he led those heroic comebacks. I’m also not letting him off the hook for how poorly he played in Dallas, and possibly even in the first halves of both the Cincy and Pittsburgh games. Granted he was spectacular in the 4th quarter, but we wouldn’t have been playing and having lead changes like that had he played better on initial drives.

I love Bruce, but believe the right starter will start opening day, whether it’s Bruce or JC, I do not know. It appears that JC was anointed while Grad was hurt, which may or may not mean anything. I’m inclined to believe it means he will.

Week 3 has been a tough week for some teams. Just ask Avery and Brackett. Say a prayer for our qbs! or knock on wood… I am!

No way

The guy missed basically all of training camp. Why would you want to sabotage our team like that? I’d say he’s not even the dressed backup for the first 4 games, with Boller holding that spot for the time being. Once Grads is 100% healthy he’ll push Boller for the backup spot and likely take it over. But start….no.

by LiveAdam on Aug 27, 2010 10:14 PM PDT reply actions

Sabotage? You obviously think little about Chemistry and the" film."

Boller was given the keys in Baltimore… he sucked. Gradkowski was give the keys with the lowly Raiders, he did good. The coaches will watch the film and they will know that Gradkowski has shown in real games what he can do. Plus you must not follow Jerry’s tweets (A Raiders writer) who tweets what goes on in OTA’s, and when Gradkowski started practicing he was making completions left and right.
*
Overall, he wouldn’t sabotage shit, but I prefer Campbell to start, I love how Gradkowski is the perfect back-up, and with our line… lets just say he will play, when Campbell gets shaken on a certain sack. Again, sabotage? ? When a team believes on a guy he goes to another level, lets hope Campbell can develop that bond too with this team and just kik ass…

"sabotage" seemed a reference to Grad's not being ready to go and not that he'll never be ready. Bruce only started

throwing in practice last week after recovering since late March – almost 5 months off and missing the physical parts of OTAs and TC. Take it easy, JJ

Yeah, I think I was thinking of LiveAdam saying that Grads should never start and can't.

True, that he is not ready right now, but when he gets it going he may look better than Campbell because of him already being here a year, etc. as I have stated above.

It shouldn take too many series to get him back in form. Like riding a bike or skiing - it's in the muscle / mind memory

just needs some calibration. Grandkowski is the man to have during times of high pressure and absolute must plays.

Tons of crow to eat on my part

So…I’ve got a lot of crow to eat after watching Grads play the Niners tonight. I still think Jason Campbell should be our starter, but I sincerely didn’t expect Gradkowski to be able to play so effectively in his first action of the preseason. It’s still up to the coaches, but I don’t see Boller being able to outplay Grads for the backup role.

by LiveAdam on Aug 28, 2010 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I got it right, lol, by saying: "lets just say he will play, when Campbell gets shaken on a certain sack."

But it’s not funny because we will see more of this in the season, so cool thing when JC goes down is we will know we have a guy who can play like a starter. But if he keeps playing like this I will be torn man, JC or Gradkowski? JC for now….

I like Bruce, but I like Campbell a little better. I want to see what he does when the fan base is behind him and he has playmakers. I think Bruce is a great backup. We all know he can do it, so if Campbell gets hurt Bruce can step in and not miss a beat. (Chaz needs to come back quick!)

Bruce is a Pro

He knows probably more than anyone he has to prove himself as totally reliable as an everyday starter before given anything. He was great for us last year in the few games we saw him. At the same time he has never been an everyday starter in the NFL and as a result he has to prove he is worth the position and work harder than everyone else. Boller and Campbell have both been in the league longer and been #1 on their respective teams for entire seasons. Bruce will just have to make the most of every opportunity given when it is given and be patient he is still relatively young. Remember Gannon was 31-32 when we got him not exactly a spring chicken in terms of professional sports. I believe Grad is 27 he still has time on his side.

When you least expect it there I am waiting below to take you out......if your lucky.

unfortunately Bruce cant stay healthy

we seem to have same problem with bruce we have with Chaz, one injury after another. You can put McFadden and maybe Bey in that as well. It seems you have your Favres and Mannings in the NFL and then you have your guys that are good but can never stay healthy long enough to put things together, Campbell might be a health problem as well.

by flymike on Aug 29, 2010 10:02 AM PDT reply actions

Did you see the hit on Campbell last night? Did you see the hits on Grad in the Dallas and Washington games last season?

Not many QBs can get right up and continue playing after hits like they took. It was our LT last night and our RT last season that took Jason and Bruce out of play. We have to do something about LT or this will continue.

by Spirals galore on Aug 29, 2010 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't believe the hype

“Stinger” is another garbage pail term that can range to some irritation to a joint subluxation that causes joint and/or neurological discomfort from the joint being off set and the neuro-pathway being disrupted.
So Spirals you can sit back and have a deep breath, these things he can recover from easily with good treatment. IT’s if they are snowballing us on the true nature of the injury.

Indeed

If Grad wouldn’t have gotten hurt, we could have had an honest quarterback competition. Campbell should have had to earn the spot, not just be given it, and judging on the 49er game, that is very much up for debate.

jim was a 1 draft pick and came highly touted out of college. played for some crappy teams and took a beating . came to the raiders and showed his heart . by coming up big when it mattered the most. his numbers never were impressive. TD to INT ratio but he got the job done. it upset me when people compare players today who have proven very little, tog reat players from the past who wear the gold and diamonds
