The Oakland Raiders 53-man Roster Projection

Head coach Tom Cable and the Oakland Raiders coaching staff will have to make some cuts to get to the required 53-man roster on Saturday.

With the third preseason game in the books, the Oakland Raiders are just about done in terms of who makes the team and who doesn't. The 53-man roster will be finalized on September 4, just over a week before the Raiders open up the season. Now, who will be on the team and who won't be? Hit the jump for my roster prediction.

Star-divide

Keep in mind that this is just my own prediction. Feel free to post your own in the thread. I will post the players at each position in a depth chart format.

Offense:
QB (3): Jason Campbell; Bruce Gradkowski; Kyle Boller
HB (4): Michael Bush; Darren McFadden; Michael Bennett; Rock Cartwright
FB (1): Marcel Reece
WR (6): Louis Murphy; Darrius Heyward-Bey; Chaz Schilens; Johnnie Lee Higgins; Jacoby Ford; Nick Miller
TE (2): Zach Miller; Brandon Myers
LT (2): Mario Henderson; Bruce Campbell
LG (2): Robert Gallery; Khalif Barnes
C (3): Jared Veldheer; Samson Satele; Chris Morris
RG (1): Cooper Carlisle
RT (2): Langston Walker; Erik Pears

Defense:
DE (4): Lamarr Houston; Matt Shaughnessy; Jay Richardson; Chris Cooper
DT (4): Richard Seymour; Tommy Kelly; John Henderson; Desmond Bryant
OLB (4): Trevor Scott; Kamerion Wimbley; Thomas Howard; Quentin Groves
MLB (2): Rolando McClain; Ricky Brown
CB (5): Nnamdi Asomugha; Chris Johnson; Stanford Routt; Jeremy Ware; Walter McFadden
S (5): Tyvon Branch; Michael Huff; Mike Mitchell; Hiram Eugene; Stevie Brown

Special Teams:
K (1): Sebastian Janikowski
P (1): Shane Lechler
LS (1): Jon Condo

There aren't really any controversial picks. I think most of the roster is already done. There are some things we can discuss, however. Maybe there's some internal discussion concerning the running back position considering Bush's injury. That would open the door for Cartwright to stay on the team. He is versatile because he can play some fullback even though his skill set is similar to Reece's and he can play special teams. Among the wide receivers we shouldn't retain are Yamon Figurs, Shaun Bodiford and Todd Watkins. One could stick around due to Schilens' knee getting scoped, but I don't think so. Now that Laveranues Coles is available, that could be bad news for someone else. For the offensive line, I think the 10 guys I have up there will be around with Pears maybe being the exception. I listed the guys at their positions loosely; our guys are versatile so the specific position in which I listed them is irrelevant if you were worried about that. Defensively, with the team only carrying five cornerbacks by my estimation, that opens the door for a fifth safety. I narrowly chose Brown over Jerome Boyd for that spot, but I really honestly don't think it's that big of a deal.

Obviously this doesn't include the practice squad and injured reserve, but what are your thoughts?

Identical to mine with Three exceptions: First, Keep Travis Goethel!!! and drop Ricky Brown

Second, Keep Thomas Howard and drop Quentin Groves.
Third, keep Sam Williams/X and drop Chris Morris (or fill in “X” with someone else – Sam is great on STs).
We are on the same page.

agreed with you on Goethel. Guy has a lot of promise. May cut Howard to save money, utilizing Brown as OLB and Goethel staying on as a middle backer.

Norris to Practice Squad again, but keep Groves. Groves gives an extra DE option and is a good backup to Wimbley at outside backer due to identical skill sets

LB is going to be tough...

I’d like to see Groves make it. The Norris vs. Groves battle is up in the air though. They may just cut Howard? I like Goethel, but maybe start him on the practice squad. While I am not a huge fan of Brown at least he has some experience.

Hey you guys!

I'm very impressed with Goethel. He's got nstincts for the ball and great instensity. Brown is nothing, gives me pleasure

to say, gets pushed around and seems to lack aggression. Got a distinct sense from hearing Cable’s radio interview (that you don’t get off the (slightly corrupted) transcript, that Groves ain’t gonna make it. Howard, on the other hand, is definitely going to be on the Roster. If you haven’t “heard” the interview, listen and we’ll compare notes. (in the morning).

I gotta believe this means Miller is out.

Especially considering the Raiders would be wise to keep both Rock and Bennett given the state of Bush’s thumb and DMC’s injury history.

I am not sure if Miller is eligible for the practice squad or not.

Thought is cheap.

by Rich Langford on Aug 30, 2010 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Given the choice of Figurs or Miller,

I think I’d go with Miller. He is a spark plug. I think Figurs has shown great burst, but questionable hands.

Thought is cheap.

by Rich Langford on Aug 30, 2010 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

And Figurs is another JLH - why have two versions? Keep the better. Plus, Yamon is a wierd name

I hope we keep Miller and throw him at return men and as a spark in WRs on quick openers, slants, button hooks, quick Welker stuff.

great list but I would make two changes. Safety i expect Eugene to be gone and we will carry four safeties, opening a roster spot for Tonga at fullback. Raiders always carry two fullbacks, usually a blocker and a runner receiver. Reece is obviously the runner receiver with Tonga staying on as the blocker.

I doubt we keep Lawton since he is suspended two games and has been very unimpressive in limited time. Plus he’s becoming a bit of a malcontent and we all know how Cable hates those.

I’d like to keep Morris because he’s solid depth.

I don’t know, i just really like Tonga and he has had a good camp and decent preseason. he has a bright future and reminds me a little of Oren O’Neal except he seems like a better runner and has better hands.

unimpressive?

i was watching the SF Oak game and Papa and Flores raved about lawton for a good couple mins straight about his play. Reece is very athletic but he cant block to save his life. and Tonga can block but isnt athletic enough to be consistent bc he whiffs a lot.

by bucnomore111 on Aug 30, 2010 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Tonga has been more known as a running/receiving fullback, despite his size.

His blocking, entering the draft has been kind of questionable. But I don’t know how his blocking was this pre-season so far.

i think you’re thinking of Chane Moline, or maybe that’s who I am thinking of. One of the two was a good blocker and an underrated runner/receiver.

Just cut Eugene and keep either Goethel or Slade Norris, and put one on the practice squad.

I'd also consider signing Coles

I think he’s got something left in the tank. He had 48 catches for 514 yards and 5 td’s last year. Plus, he’s not that old at 32.

Brown and Boyd probably have more potential.

Eugene isn’t better than Branch, Huff or Mitchell so I can see why people want Eugene cut. Personally, I don’t care whether he’s on the team or not.

Eugene has started ahead of huff several times over the past few years (although i think huff is “better”)
Mitchell has never started ahead of Eugene. What are you basing Mitchell being better than Eugene on?

At the end of this season I assume Branch will be far away the best of all em.

Mitchell has never started ahead of Huff because one is a strong safety and one is a free safety.

For Mitchell to crack the starting lineup, there would have to be some shuffling.

Liking Goethel, and looking to keep Slade and Howard, Slade to practice squad again

but believe we could see the likes of Pears, Eugene, maybe Cooper could be gone if the right guys show up available. Also up in the air is the second fb spot, who may not be Tonga, Lawton, Moline, or any of those we’ve tried out. Could be the next half decent FA waived at the position. None of our guys except Reese serve any true purpose immediately. Don’t see us wasting the roster space on them.

Maybe send Higgins packing and pick him up

by Mr. Elek on Aug 29, 2010 3:30 PM PDT reply actions

Higgins won't be the one going.

If we add a receiver and we’re dropping one, it should be Miller. The team likes Higgins more than Miller. Higgins started the game in Chicago. He’s not special or anything, but he’s not a bad number four option.

Now, if we’re adding a wide receiver, it shouldn’t be anyone other than Coles. Bryant isn’t healthy and I don’t trust his health one bit.

That doesn't mean he'll ever get to full strength or be able to sustain his health if he gets it back.

There are too many question marks here. The team didn’t cut him for nothing. They still have to pay him the guaranteed salary as well.

In other words, Al likes Higgins, so he stays, typical, another bonehead move by the windy

old winbag, so now, instead of making a common sense move and releasing the guy, we’re going to keep him, a DEADWOOD 4TH WR. He’s not special, you’re right about that, he struggles, struggles, struggles. The old saying ‘if you give a guy, enough rope, he’ll hang himself’, applies to Higgins.

Jacoby Ford, has more footspeed, better instincts and much more raw talent than Higgins, yet, he’s going to be the fifth receiver on a team that is struggling to find consistency. Leave it to Davis, Calvin Branch, Biletnikoff, played 35 years ago, WR is the one position that Davis should have no influence on this team.

Footnote: spare me the Tim Brown draft pick, that was a no brainer. And James Jett, while I’ll concede he wasn’t the fastest to ever play the game. He was the fastest player, at the perfect position for his speed, when he broke free, nobody, that means NOBODY was going to get him. Pure burner.

I’d like to see Brennan as 3rd QB instead of Boller. Think about it, Boller for the most part has stunk his whole NFL career. That’s why Baltimore looked in a different direction, and Frye is banged up all the time.

Boller

has proven that he at least belongs on a nfl roster. colt has not. plus boller has looked pretty dang effiecient this pre season.

i dont understand why people always think an unproven player (rookie or similar) is automatically better than a proven nfl caliber player that doesnt have superstar type talent.

I agree and disagree

I think we should let go Eugene, he hasn’t really done nothing in my eyes, plus Brown ahs impressed with his ballhawk skills. I also think we should let go of Pears, he hasn’t showed much promise. Besides, Campbell and Vedheer are versatile. I would like to see Goethel stay on the roster and one of the other FB’s to fill those two voids. Other than that looks good to me, the rest can go on the practice squad.

On the WR note. If there is anyway possible to get Coles i think we should. Although he’s saying he’s considering retiring, and that he figured Jets would be his last stop. But I think it’s worth a shot.

There is no way Boyd is better than Stevie Brown, I’m sorry but Boyd, for all his physicality, lacks instincts for the ball. Add Nick Miller to the WR list (they tend to get hurt) and drop Ware whose worse than Huff about wrapping up and rather a dim wit.

I wasn't sure about brown

I haven’t watched Goethel enough to know much about his play but if he seems at least decent then i can feel good about dropping Ricky. I don’t think Boyd is better i just listed them wrong =p.

Final cuts.

Cut Chris Cooper, never did anything of note. Cut Jay Richardson, can’t hold position on edge runs to his side and is a question mark with the injury. William Joseph? LOL!! Also Thomas Howard and Sam Williams should go since this team is going in another direction and neither has shown much to contirbute on special teams as our coverage has been probably the worst in the league this preseason. Also cut Hiram already. Boyd and Brown should both stay since neither was an expensive pick and both have shown good ball skills and hitting. Also cut Pears. He can’t do anything. Keep Kellen Heard and use him as a OT\ NT and figure out where he has most value even as a tackle eligible on goal line for more beef.
