Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Safety is once again missing? Danger is more like it!

Huff is doing exactly what Schweigert did to lose his job. Schweigert was brought in as a hard-hitting safety good in coverage. How safe can Huff's job be after his recent performances. Wasn't he supposed to be an upgrade in tackling coming from the run heavy Texas team.
Huff: I would give Huff no more than a year before he loses his starting role.
Stevie Brown: My first choice to replace Huff in the starting lineup would be Stevie Brown.
Mitchell: I would rotate Mitchell in during big sets and goal line.
Branch: I am happy with Branch because he seems to be the only decent player both against the run and pass. Another option would be to move Branch to FS immediately.

I wish they would've given this more of a look,

but the fact that they haven’t makes me skeptical about Branch’s ability as a FS. I’d worry about his ball skills.

Hey you guys!

right, so we can give up the deep ball

if you knew anything about tyvon branch’s cover skills you would be much less smug in your assertion. In fact, he’d get killed at free and they have been trying Mitchell there so far unsuccessfully (I thought you were at the games?). Anyway, Huff is the best option at free because he can cover. He can’t tackle but neither can eugene. So what is the trade off, a deep safety who can cover or a guy who will miss open field tackles.

Huff was good last year

No reason to worry

Not really. He was really medicore actually. People only say he’s good cause he had 3 int’s in the first 3 games.

His tackling was better

And his overall coverage, he’s not great but he’s still underrated

Underrated? He was a high first rd. draft pick. How can he be underrated after 4 years of underacheiving?

he sucked at first

But 2years ago he became okay – decent

Last year he went from decent – solid and no one around the league talks about him. Thats how he is underrated , i guess you can say a lack of acknowledgment of his improvement

Well it Depends

I think if we run more than single high cover one huff will shine. He has range but all he does is stay deep. We don’t allow him to be a playmaker and Really no one on defense outside of the Dline gets a chane to. We all said the same about Woodson he is finished but when he got to green bay into a system that allows him to make plays he shined big time. I blame Marshall I don’t even know why he is at the game I can call our defense from home. 4 wr’s set what are you going to play man to man but you have a LB matched up with a WR’s its okay man to man.

by Micheal Y on Aug 30, 2010 9:28 AM PDT reply actions

I've been ragging on Huff alot

because he really has been embarrassed on two big run plays. Granted its a problem when your FS is all alone against a running back, but he needs to make the play. The jury is still out on him.

by Mr. Elek on Aug 30, 2010 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Couldn't help but think ..

Aren’t you taught to wrap up when you tackle, at a very young age?! That was a piss poor job of tackling against the 9ers ..

Gore was too big, he would've bounced of.... he needed to duck low and take his legs out.

I saw an Eric Berry play were he took out the FB and RB by going under them, hence, they flew/tripped and fell.
Huff needs to watch other players and model his game or at least learn their techniques that they use.

by JaggerJaw on Aug 30, 2010 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

too late isn't it

Didn’t Huff watch film and change his style already. His new style is to hit hard which usually works except Gore kept his balance when he bounced into Routt. I too question Branch’s ball skills.

I wouldn’t compare Woodson with Huff. They are playing two different positions.

People say Huff has range but he hasn’t shined in any part of the game. I like Brown because he played FS and LB in a spread league so he must have a wide range of skills. His instincts against the pass as a natural FS have already shown up in practice and games.

by Sbay on Aug 30, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. I am not saying he should make tackles but when you think about all the top FS in the game. None of them play single high cover 1 the whole game. ED Reed plays the whole field I am not saying Huff is on Reed level but we don’t allow players to do nothing to create turnovers.

by Micheal Y on Aug 30, 2010 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

id play mitchell!!!!!!

hes a beast he can tackle for sure and hes able to lay the wood and wrap up very nicely at the same time, huff is nothin really great that i have seen in the run game but ill give it to him in the passing game. id play mike mitch and branch together having brown and huff as our back ups!

by Shadow Soldier on Aug 30, 2010 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

we need to move to a 3-4 defense

Im sick of the 4-3 and we are going to get gashed as long as we use it.

by Mr. Elek on Aug 30, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

agreed

3-4 WOULD work well for us to get some lbs on the feild and it would allow for a better blitz wen we do blitz lol

by Shadow Soldier on Aug 30, 2010 2:52 PM PDT reply actions

As long As Big Al......

Has a say, they will run a 4-3 base D. So let’s not even waste a breath on that !!! Let’s be greatful that we’re running more looks other than the 4-3 !!!
Far as Huff, he ‘s makes the play, 7 out 10 times. But the those 3 times are so bad(bad lines, missed tackles, etc.) makes you forget the about the good. Huffs ability to all positions, wether good or bad will keep him on the team, along with being a former #1 pick by AL D. I still think his best position for us could be at the CB position. Now if we thought CJ and Routt( who’s playing his ass off) couldn’t handle it, move Huff, and give the Rookie, Brown a greenlight. Mitchell is a SS……PERIOD !!! And truefully, He needs to quit thinking so much, and play the FOOTBALL type a game, that got him drafted. DAMN, Hit a damn lineman or a Ref, something !!! Cause he as yet to hit anyone else, ie; running back or wideout !!!

by papabegood on Aug 30, 2010 3:24 PM PDT reply actions

Raiders don't have the personel to play 3-4

They already tried and failed a few years ago. It has nothing to do with Al, and to say so doesn’t make any sense. Especially since Al’s teams have played 3-4 in the past.

by Sbay on Aug 30, 2010 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

One only has to remember the horror show that was Tyler Brayton playing linebacker

and trying to cover a running back to show how bad the Raiders were at playing a 3-4. Although I think we’d have good 3-4 ends and OLB’s, we’d be short an ILB & a true NT for it to work here.

Bow down, when you're Westwood bound.

by S Jay Bruin on Aug 30, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Has everything to do with Big AL !!

Al is more DEFENSIVE minded than offense, Always has been, and always will be !!! Yes, we have played the 3-4, won a SB with it in 80. This defensive unit can run a combination of defenses, because of the personnel !!! The base is a 4-3. So for you to say we don’t have the players to run a 3-4, doesn’t make any sense!!!! What team have you been watching ????

by papabegood on Aug 30, 2010 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

What we lack is the Keystone NT, w/o that your 3-4 vision won't be realized. We've discussed this here intensely

and there weren’t any NTs there for us. So, we wait and don’t force it. But, I suspect Marshall is old-school (ancient school if not pre-historic school) and didn’t want it). I know I’ve been what some might consider negative about Marshall but I’m pissed off about Saturday night and our inability to crush the run – which I foolishly believed we’d accomplished – and so I’m blaming the DC for, at least what I know were bad settups that put us at disadvantage when the ball was snapped.

I have disagree

we have all the right personnel for a 3-4. Kelly at NT, Seymour and Houston at DT. Wimbley and Scott play Outside and Howard and McClain play inside. We have plenty of guys to rotate in and out. This would be nasty.

Exactly

If we switched to the 3-4, then guys would be wasted. Shaughnessy is too good to be off the field.

by duballers23 on Aug 30, 2010 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

He wouldn't be wasted

he would rotate with seymour on passing downs. Use his ability.

by Mr. Elek on Aug 31, 2010 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Kelly matches better as a 3 Technique DE in the 3-4.

However both Seymour and Houston are also best suited for the same position so one has to go. Also this team had a chance at both Donald Butler and Cam Thomas in the draft which would have effectively signalled a change to a 3-4 but didn’t. Also those of you who are saying Branch will get murdered at free only look at his play against San Fran. He played the ball better than the receiever it was intended for.

Kelly is not a good DT.

We need a STRONG and BIG DT in the middle to make a 3-4 successful. We don’t have that. Unless Heard or Henderson are up to it.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Huff

Just wait and see how this hard-hitter performs when he actually has a chance to REST from time to time! last years’ offense was resposible for a lot of the defensive woes, as the defense sure did spend a ton of time on the field. The numbers tend to stack up when the time stacks up. Basic math.

Agreed, DB’s who are part of a defensive unit who play consistent defense, only to have the offense go 3 and out makes for a long, tiring night, ass to that the fact that our pass rush has been attrocious for years, NA21 taking 1/2 of the field away, it is awful easy to expose whatever tiny weaknesses the other DBs have.

NO MERCY!

by RAIDERSNOMERCY on Aug 31, 2010 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I just don't understand why

We don’t at least run Tampa 2. We refuse to rush more than 4 Houston could go inside to the 3 DT and Richard could play the NT and allow Scott or Wimbley as the pass rushing ends. Shaughnessy could play the strong end I believe Howard could be as good as Brooks if he was coached up. I really think we have a better defense than a lot of teams I just think Marshall is afraid to use them or isn’t allow to. I think Huff is a good Safety but this single high crap isn’t going to allow him or anyone else to become a play maker. The defense is full of talent but no play makers Nnamdi is as good as it gets but he only gets 1 int a year we need turnovers and touchdowns on defense. Until we change from this 1980’s defense I believe its all going to a waste.

by Micheal Y on Sep 1, 2010 11:42 AM PDT reply actions

It does have the shortcoming of being predictable. When we play SF again, they will go heavy with Vernon Davis against

MLB while doing what they did with their RBs – up the middle or off Tackle opposite our overload (unless Marshall wises up). It’s not so much an arcane D as one that has innate vulnerabilities, especially if the MLB misreads and the lone DBs don’t make their tackle.

S-O-B: ITS HOW I ROLL, DEAL WITH IT.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Sep 1, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

and...

you have retrain everyone from playing man to zone. DBs will have to learn the nuances of zone coverage, and do a lot more hitting rather than dragging. It would take a couple seasons for the Raiders to make the transition, then evaluate and find new weaknesses to shore up.
Or, we can just work on the defense we have now with a better FS and more natural pass rush.

by Sbay on Sep 1, 2010 6:21 PM PDT reply actions

We have ran this Defense forever

A FS isn’t the problem is that this system is to easy to read for a QB. If you think putting Brown back there is going to change the FS problem thats not it. I agree we do need a pass rusher that requires a double team. But if we get one teams are just going to go oppisite Nnamdi side the HB to chip the pass rusher and burn us with the backside TE or WR none of our linebacker or Branch can cover a top TE. Thats why we most change this Defense not because I love zone but its just to hard to play man the whole game. Last year our best Defensive game was the Eagles game because we changed up the play calling and used Scott to rush and play short coverage thats what he is best at. Routt pick up a pass for a touchdown but it was a BS call that took it back. I am not asking for all Zone I just want to see our DC look as if he is putting a game plan together. We all know CJ is the best weapon on the Titans i want to see him game plan for stopping him. I want to see some inside stunts with the Dline and i don’t think our DB’s tackling is the problem. It should be why are RB going 8 yards without being touched or why our defense play great on 1st and 2nd down then allow a 3rd and long run the middle to work.
