Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

Oakland's Pass D hard on its own. Q: Do we have enough WR depth to make it to the opener?

Jacoby Ford WR has a quadricep  injury

Louis Murphy WR, recovers from a concussion and (now) a bruised foot (complements of Stanford Routt)

Chaz Schilens WR is still troubled  by his foot pain

Jonathan Holland WR sprained ankle

DH-B WR missed the afternoon practice and went through only 1/2 the morning drills with soreness (?)

Paul Hubbard WR pulled his hamstring

Johnnie Lee Higgins WR continues to suffer from blown route syndrome

Meanwhile, WRs Yamon Figurs and Nick Miller emerge unscathed and catch everything in sight.

Poll
Given our ferocious pass defense that is wasting most of our WR unit, should we acquire at least one more WR before regular season begins?
Yes, at the rate we're going through WRs, Alex Daniels may be lining up wide against Tennessee.

No, our WR corps is okay as it is - they will recover in time

Damn, not sure. Maybe putting red-shirts on WRs will preserve them longer

Depth never hurts.

as long as it is a guy who doesn’t have personality issues… if you know what i mean.

Torry Holt might get cut from the pats… might.

If he does, we should certainly pick him up.

…also if they bring someone else in i hope it spells the end for JLH. I have my fingers crossed that Nick Miller beats him for the roster spot because Ford is definitely going to make it.

Watch the waiver wire...

More wr’s never hurt. Ford’s quad is a killer. I don’t know the severity, but that could cost him the entire pre season.

I'd say it could make the preseason battles interesting, giving some of the lower on the depth chart guys time

Nick Miller, Todd Watkins, Yamon Figurs could seize an opportunity while it’s hot. I don’t think the DHB thing is an issue at all. I hope Ford can recover in time for the season to start. He’s already a pretty polished guy who knows the route tree, so if he keeps his head in the books and around practice he can continue to prepare while he heals.

Hope it doesn’t indicate injury proneness. I think it’s make or break for Higgins, too, who might not make it if someone intriguing is available we just can’t pass up.

not to worried about anything

but schillens foot still buggin him draws some concern. if its not gonna leave him alone now, then what about in the season?? w/ murphy its all precautionary for the most part and DHB takin some time out allows miller and watkins whom im actually pretty big fans of get some snaps in. i think miller can be a lot like wes welker, super quick out of his cuts. theres not a lot of reason to like watkins other then the fact that he beat revis on a potential TD route but Jruss couldnt hit him… hit revis just fine though.

by frank7da2tank on Aug 6, 2010 12:16 AM PDT reply actions

I wish you are right. Still, the pattern is there for some reason. Chaz should consider seeing another podiatrist / orthopedic

DH-B, for all his conditioning, apparently wasn’t prepared enough for contact. Watkins rarely drops the ball – that’s his edge.
Imagine the worst case scenario – Chaz’s foot problem doesn’t go away, Murphy gets another concussion early on, DH-B is slow to adjust to contact, Ford’s thigh bruise (which is now common knowledge) is the subject matter of pregame briefings (targeted). There’s something to be said for massive WRs and we should be looking closely at the waiver-wire, as noontide suggests.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Aug 6, 2010 4:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I think

the training staff are being very cautious about the health of WRs. Given last year’s debacle at WR and how its a very young corps. The only thing I would be a little more concerned about is Schilens foot. Having this constant issue with a full off season no playoffs to play in he still has an issue with this. You would think he would have sought out or been given direction by the team for off season therapy. If in the 1st pre-season game they all drop like flies then I say for sure we need to shore up with some cast offs that can fill the void. I would say dont worry about DHBs shoulder or Fords Quad. The Hamstring thing in my experience (which without going into detail I tonnes of) definitely shows underlying issues that the player is either 1. Not listening to the training staff about treatment and self care or 2. He has a natural imbalance in his legs muscle which is quite often the case with speed demons especially when they do not listen to taking care and being cautious about rebalancing the issue.
I do not however drink for the poisonous kool-aid well of “I knew we should have signed TO”. TO is not the answer if we can get a youngish type player from the waiver wire that is not a locker room jerk and wants to play as part of a team that would be the best pick up.

Just watched this video of Mike Mitchell working out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYH2X2GNSr8
He’s been going to this guy since he was 13. And as it often happens when you start exercising at an early age (i.e., when you feel invincible), he’s developed some dangerous habits – just look at how unstable his hips are during the heavier sets. I’ve rised the issue before, and I say it again – some of those trainers don’t really know what they are doing.

by Spirals galore on Aug 6, 2010 5:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely

Quite often they just want the person/athlete to move the weight without correcting technique and ensuring stability. Just watch the morons in the gym doing really really really bad squats or dead lifts or well any compound exercise for that matter and see how bad and incorrect they are. Most of the time in the gym it is trainer encouraged.
When I spoke of “listening to the trainer” I meant in terms of stretching, remedial exercises and therapy.

by TheLyleAlzadoPunch on Aug 6, 2010 6:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Troof!

The trainers are there for a reason, and the players have got to listen to them. I am seeing a lot of issues here that could be nipped in the bud if only the players would do the pre-practice and post-practice training regimens assigned to them. Each player has a unique routine based upon their individual bodies/maladies, and they have the staff and facilities to get through these problems. Red-shirting the wideouts could be a temporary fix——but, it is always bad to practice with no contact only to play in a hostile environment.

by spec on Aug 6, 2010 7:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

Most guys (yes the young ones as I did it when I was young) just scoff at the idea of needed extra treatment post practice therapy or whatever to assist in reducing the progression or prevent injuries. The air of invincibility steams throughout unfortunately and only later in a players career do the lament and say “I wish I would have done ______ as the trainer/therapist told me to” Many players careers have been shortened as a result of this mentality.

He's a player than can help. I don't think his attitude is as bad as some malcontent receivers out there.

However there is no way the Super Chokers would trade him to us. Even if they were to place him on waivers if say he was to refuse to report during the season, they would let him clear to play for Oakland. This team needs some luck because this receiver issue is bigger than I thought it would be heading into the pre-season.

It does. I do agree with what you said.

I thought about when the pats brought in Randy Moss, and everyone was saying that he’ll be a distraction in the locker room. I think maybe it’s because of not only WHO our QB was, but by his leadership and dedication to winning made Randy a better citizen so to speak.

I think if we brought in jackson, I think we should give him a chance. If anything a chance. He’s not necessarily a TO, or a guy who has criminal records. I don’t like the fact that he’s holding out on his own team, trying to extort more money. That tells me he is not a team player.

But IF he happens to come here, I’ll play the optimist.

well he does have DUI troubles

but every charger has dui troubles…. ii think if hes here, he wouldnt be a problem. and i dont think hes the type to put himself before his team. cuz if thats the case, cant the same be said about darrelle revis, cj2k, and alot of other players demanding more money? its not just him, its his agent doing most of the talking, so i dont think hell be a problem

also, on top of that, the chargers have a history of seeing even their best players as expendable. (see: rodney harrison, junior seau, lorenzo neal, drew brees, ladanian tomlinson). this is part of the reason why archie manning told eli not to accept being drafted by them, cuz they werent gonna treat him right.

on top of that fact, have you seen what they were going to offer him? under 3 million for a top 10 wr? thats sad. especially considering they extended antonio gates’s contract 5 yrs, around the ballpark of 25 million….
and now they expect him to go for about 300,000 for the season? fuck that i wud hold out too… (not really)

i say we take him from them and offer 4 yr, 20 mil contract… PAY DA MAN!

Guys, I wouldn’t read to much into these injuries. Most of these players sitting out are mostly because 1. They’re sore. 2. It’s preseason. And 3. It’s preseason.

You don’t want to over work anybody that doesn’t need it. Darrius has been working his ass of since Febuary, Chaz is glass, Louis is a hard working son of a bitch with a concussion and Jonothan Holland probably just rolled his ankle coming out of a route.

The only injury I’m worrying about is Jacoby’s. He has a bright future as our slot/HB/KR. I hope he returns ASAP.

by JaKe. on Aug 6, 2010 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah

as I said before the trainers and coaches are probably being overly cautious. However the Schilens foot issue is bigger than being cautious. I think he is broken for real and its perplexing because he had 5-6 months to get it fixed up and ready to play. If that wasn’t enough then they should have gone further with surgery or something to fix what can’t be taken care with other noninvasive treatments.

dont get me wrong i love the Raiders but for real when it comes to WR none of them would even make it on anouther teams practice squad its lame.. Every now and then they seem alright till boom they are hurt, hella weak we could have picked up some solid talent this year but we do nothing we need someone thats like a young Hines Ward or Bouldin finding a guy who has hands and can take a hit. The raiders should pick up atleast 2 WR, get someone who can take a damn hit it just pisses me off, get rid of the pussy’s damn and get a real WR

I hear you. But Murphy's is in no way a puss - he went out to practice with a concussion and Routt stomped on his foot and

its all swollen so WTF! Meanwhile, Schilens has been seeing a Quack doctor from Marin (I’m guessing) whose using magnets and crystals to cure him – along with organic Acai berries, probably. As for DH-B, well Huff nailed him. So, one way of looking at it is – our D are a bad bunch of mo-foz who refuse to cut slack when they step on a gridiron. (if that’s not a totally satisfactory account – then, yes, we do have some fragile thoroughbred WRs and need to get a Jackson/Bouldinesque type yesterday)
