"We're going to run it and we want the other team to know we're going to run it!" or something to that effect was bellowed by "Baby" Hue Jackson to the entire team during training camp this past summer.
I'm all in favor of getting a running game going, with or without Michael Bush, with or without a competent offensive line to show the way. The only problem is, they didn't do it today against the Titans. Yea, Darren McFadden had his best game as a pro almost reaching 100 yards on the day BUT, most of his long gains came on meaningless downs. He was a workhorse in this game but those were tough running yards. His best plays were catching passes behind the linebackers and running downfield. That’s where McFadden's real skills are put to use.
So I ask you Baby Huey, with all your vaunted skillz as an offensive coordinator, where in Sam Hill was the running game today? Hey, we know the Titans shredded our O-line pretty good. We knew before we arrived in Nashville they would try to do that so instead of countering that with some misdirections or end arounds or bubble screens, you let Jason Campbell try to set up in the pocket with three step drops where he was hammered or most of his throws did not yield the results we needed. You tried an end around once and it worked. Why not get Heyward-Bey more involved since the guy has "fresh legs" as Coach "Laying" Cable likes to say. Why not think of ways to thwart the Titans schemes and help your guys out instead of trying to shove it down the Titans' throats (which clearly was not working)? I think you were beaten today by a much less experienced defensive coordinator in the Titans' Chuck Cecil.
There were a few effective pass plays (mostly to McFadden) but our receivers were not involved until the second half. That is way too late and did not give us the run-pass balance we needed.
I know it's easy for me to be an armchair critic and say all this in hindsight from the comfort of the Internet. But honestly Huey Baby, we were expecting more out of less. We all know our O-line stinks to high hell like cheddar cheese that’s been sitting in a sauna for a week. You have to find a way to squeeze them for everything their humongously fat asses and paychecks are worth. Make them sprint for pull blocks, move the pocket. Use more guys as decoys in the backfield. Where the hell was Marcel Reece? Did you know the guy is a pretty damn good runner? Anything that gives Campbell a chance back there. Get Rock Cartright involved. The guy has speed to burn.
Thanks for reading Baby Huey. Now let's get the Rams next week.
