Raiders run D last week wasn't as bad as the numbers show

Stay connected for news and updates

For sure the Raiders run defense the last 7 years has been pathetic at best and you would think just looking at the numbers from last week(32 rushes; 175 yds by RB's)you would think the Raiders run D hasn't improved. However, if you watched the game, for most of the 1st half the Raiders held Johnson in check. He made that big run late in the 2nd qtr. and as Steve Corkran of the Oakland Tribune pointed out: "Twenty of Johnson's 27 carries went for 4 yards or fewer. Of those 20, 10 failed to net more than 1 yard". Thats pretty good. "Those 76 yards accounted for more than half of Johnson's 142 for the game. Johnson averaged a pedestrian 2.5 yards on his 26 other carries." Johnson is a special back. He's a home run hitter. You can stop him 9 times, but that 10th rush he'll take it for 85 yards and that one run will make the defensive stats look as if they weren't stopping him when in fact they were. So take solice Raider Nation, the Raider run D is improving, it's just last week the Raiders effort were over shadowed by the stats.
