Ask Battle Red Blog: The Unofficial Q&A about the Houston Texans

Nfl_houston_texans_f635_medium

Hey there folks, the name is Jordann and I hail from Battle Red Blog.

I know some people are still hung over from the past weekend, and some people just want to forget about it altogether.  So let's all look ahead to this weekend's match up!

Last year's match up was a great one, we all had high hopes for our respective teams and it definitely gave us a better look at what damage each team an do for the rest of the regular season.

Every time I see a game against The Raiders in my calendar,  I always mark it as a loss.  Because their secondary matches up well with our passing offense.  I would love to see Andre Johnson have a big game, but we all know that he's facing one of the best CB's in the league so the chances are small.

To get the ball rolling, I have a couple of questions for you Raider faithfuls.

-How's the secondary?  As you all know, ours was exposed last sunday against the Southern Oklahoma Cowboys.  Roy Williams caught two TD's. ROY WILLIAMS MAN.

-Who is the true WR1 in your receiving corps?  I really thought that this was the year that Chaz Schillens(sp?) would take over because of his size and respectable speed, but Louis Murphy looks like a better candidate.

-What is the strength of your offense?

-Who's the best player on offense and defense?

I hope this fan post serves as a great medium for both teams to get to know each other.  A similar one was posted in our blog by noontide so feel free to come by any time if you have any questions.

Thanks guys!  And lets both hope for an injury-free game this Sunday.  Go Texans!

Both your CB's look atrocious. They'll probably make DHB and Murphy look like Pro Bowlers-

don’t you agree? Your Run D looks great but I predict we will dismantle your D by air. I see us sowing down your run game significantly as we have done ok against Jackson and CJ. You also haven’t faced a guy like Nnam, who will shut down a WR completely, that it’s like not having two WR’s on the field, only 1. Do you guys miss Dunta Robinson?

actually, we didn't do ok on CJ.....

Forgot he had like 3 TD’s, but we mostly limited him in yards.

by JaggerJaw on Sep 28, 2010 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes but

we let him dump a big one on us. Partly because or D line is semi suspect (Tom Kelly you fatter turd). The run play calling over shoots at times and they get daylight like CJ did and boom he’s gone with any speed. We have safeties that are good at either run or pass to some degree not both. So a good OC can scheme to fuck with that.

Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

we are still the raiders

You guys have nothing to worry about playing the raiders reason # 1 tom cable can’t coach high school football # 2 al Davis will play a soft zone and men to men defense mario Henderson can’t block anybody # 3
the raiders are still sorry no mater who we play we will find away to lose al Davis is a real ass hole that makes the raiders one of the sport teams in the NFL good thing we have atop draft pick all no.we don’t that goes to new England al Davis stop sleeping in the off season

I predict we will dismantle your D by air.

I predict the same thing. Im not hoping for a dismantling but I know that your OC will take advantage of our weak secondary.

And about the run game, it’s not that hard to stop us. Score a whole bunch of points and we’ll stop running the ball. Im a little scared of your front four, especially with our starting LT out.

And about Scrabble(we call him that over at BRB because of his last name), I can see him shutting down Andre Johnson. But we do have a lot of offensive weapons so it’s going to be hard.

About Dunta, the answer is no. We do not miss him. He was a liability in coverage last season and I think that he wouldve been worse this season for us. We’re better of with Kareem(rookie) and seeing if he can develop into a great CB.

He did alright in his first start.

Gave up two sack to DeMarcus Ware, and did an ok job run blocking.

Talking about DT

how has Lamarr looked? (Texas longhorn fan) i wanted him in the Second round in the draft.

Too small for a DT in the NFL. He wouldn’t see much success there..In my opinion at least.

Probably true

Houston really does belong on the end. He is pretty fast. Coming along nicely.

by rightnasty on Sep 29, 2010 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

No DT is right

none of our DT’s are big, Lamarr is an UT not a NT. our D-line coach loves small fast DT’s he would have been perfect.

yea Andre will most likely be shut down

but we have very good WRs like Kevin Walters and Jacoby Jones that can get the job done. Foster might just have a decent game and Dunta isn’t missed

Nobody misses Dunta Robinson.

He is terrible.

Glover Quin is a passable cornerback. Kareem Jackson has played just about how you’d expect a rookie to play.

How is your Running game?

scale 1 to 10?

by Joe25 on Sep 28, 2010 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

8, but since you guys look good on that aspect of defense, a 5.

Dmac has been running hard and slamming into defenders by dropping his shoulder, he’s running better and is in the top 5 of rushing yards so far in this young season.

by JaggerJaw on Sep 28, 2010 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm. how about your O-line

has it given up a lot QB hits, hurries, or sacks?

living the Texas dream

by Joe25 on Sep 28, 2010 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, although we didn't give up many sacks in the Cards game. Only 1 maybe 2.

Many hurries, and QB hits. Thank goodness our QB Gradkowski is very mobile. He’s like Vick mobile but just a little less fast than him. If we had Jason Campbell back there you guys would have a great day with probably as many as 5 sacks and interceptions as pressure leads to bad decisions.
I bet Matt is not very mobile which would explain the 4 sacks last game. How did your O-line look?

The RaiderLaker

by JaggerJaw on Sep 28, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

we gave up 3 sack vs the cards

but houston seems to have trouble getting to the qb(outside of mario) and they are very susceptible to giving up coverage sacks. i am looking forward to our rushing O against there rush D, because i dont think addai and portis are that hard to shut down, and thats why there rush D looks good thus far. they gave up over 100 to dallas, and they were having hell running the ball up until then. i think we match up very good against houston, as long as our other db’s play a smart game. this will be fun to see what our OAKLAND raiders are all about!

by rodeosnake12 on Sep 28, 2010 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I envy your DB corps.

Can we haz Nnamdi? PLEASE!

-Bernard Pollard-

by Jordann on Sep 29, 2010 2:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Your defensive line with the exception of Mario is much like ours.

They don’t seem to apply much pressure. Also I noticed you all have committed only one turnover this year which bodes well for us. Your run defense may negate Darren McFadden and the running game which will cause us to have to throw against your secondary. I noticed you all had an issue with Brian Cushing’s replacement covering tight ends, specifically Dallas Clark and your corners are not getting good jams at the line when you’re running a cover two. That makes me question how good is Bernard Pollard in coverage and Eugene Wilson. Would you all prefer a rotation at that position or are you happy with both as your starters currently and would you prefer to run different types of coverages because of this?

Eugene Wilson is the worst defensive back in the NFL

Pollard helps us win against run games, so you can live with that.

Defensive coordinator Frank Bush is definitely on the hot seat with Houston fans.

by riversmccown on Sep 28, 2010 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

We'd prefer a new set of safeties.

With the exception of Bernard Pollard of course.

by Jordann on Sep 29, 2010 2:25 AM PDT up reply actions

How’s the secondary?

Beast against the run, sketchy against the pass. Besides Nnamdi of course.

Who is the true WR1 in your receiving corps?

Well, I think it’s more of a 1.A and 1.B situation. Both Louis and Darrius have incredible potential and could both be #1’s in the future. But, if I really had to put them in a box. It’d be Louis at #1 and Darrius at #2.

What is the strength of your offense?

Running the ball. Darren McFadden has been an absolute beast in the absence of Bush. Once Bush gets back to full health, you can expect a tandem that will make defenses shake in their boots.

Who’s the best player on offense and defense?

Offense= Zach Miller. Reliable. Beast. Total badass.
Defense= Nnamdi. For reasons that I shouldn’t have to explain.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

What's McFadden's status?

We have a mouth-breathing reporter for the local Houston rag who gets everything wrong. He’s saying McFadden is hurt, but color me skeptical since I don’t see him on an injury report anywhere.

and it's hamstring

I call for heads to Roll. Here is the injury report from today:

Henderson didn’t practice at all last week, and foot injuries become more of an issue when supporting some 335-plus pounds.
Also not practicing was defensive tackle Richard Seymour, which was no surprise given his admission Monday that he was affected by his hamstring pull against Arizona and was lacking explosion and power.
Seymour talked openly of trying to determine the best course of action _ weighing the help he can give against the risk of making it worse and having a condition which could limit him for the entire season.
Those who did not practice were WR Chaz Schilens (knee), LG Robert Gallery (hamstring), LB Travis Goethel (lower back), Henderson (foot), Seymour (hamstring), S Hiram Eugene (hamstring), CB Chris Johnson (ankle), CB Walter McFadden (hamstring) and WR Louis Murphy (clavicle).

What’s up with Murphy’s clavicle?

by Spirals galore on Sep 29, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey, the player should know how to damn stretch before a game. What other special thing-

shoud Brad Roll do to prevent this? As an athlete, I hold myself responsible if I get an injury, unless I get hurt by the opponent. I wouldn’t blame the coach if it were my fault…

The RaiderLaker

by JaggerJaw on Sep 29, 2010 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

This is not good news at all.

The Raiders need the DT’s this week. Seymour shouldn’t have played last week if it was still bothering him. You can’t push hammys. Which sucks for his prospects this week. Damn it!

I think it is kinda hard to put it on the trainer. Hammys and quads happen. They can happen to people who stretch and people who are training to hard just as much as people who haven’t been training. I just don’t think you can get a uniform procedure to protect against them. It’s like a pitchers arm.

What do you think?

by Rich Langford on Sep 29, 2010 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Half the injuries on our roster are "hamstring" so that's too big a coincidence. LAP says the main cause for them is

an imbalance. So these guys have disproportionate quadricep development that wasn’t addressed (perhaps not even assessed) during the long layover.

Strange, isn't it?

Cliff Branch said his first camp, he pulled a hamstring really bad because the running so much more in the NFL, but this shouldn’t be happening 4 weeks into the season.

Our head trainer has been Rod Martin

Al Davis keeps him on the staff because of his name.
I personally believe he’s responsible for DHB’s fatigue.

If Al Davis ever did hire a GM, he would probably look for someone named Al Davis. And it wouldn’t matter if he was a shoe salesman

by RUKidding on Oct 2, 2010 1:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Over the past years, Al Davis hasn't made many solid picks.

Jamarcus tops the list, followed by Robert Gallery and possibly DHB if he can’t get it together this year or the next. I really liked the McClain pick. He’s a taller version of Demeco Ryans(kinda). They both are sure tacklers and have great instincts. I haven’t watched him play yet, but how does he look?

For those of you asking if we miss Dunta Robinson, we do not. He would probably do worse than our current CBs that we have. He was massively overpaid by ATL, so don’t think he is good simply because he got a mammoth contract. He is probably the most ridiculed player/former player over at BRB.

Check DHB's stats... they are not bad.

10 catches for 140 yards is not bad, and remember that all of last year he had only 9 catches. He has improved vastly. In the Pre-season I was not convinced and I did label him a bust, but he has proven me wrong with some really crucial catches in the regular season. He looks like a weapon and can draw PI’s with his speed as CB’s get panicky when he gets good seperation. I expect your CB’s to get a lot of penalties. Murphy is another weapon along with Miller our TE. I predict Darren and DHB and McClain will be the future, Al did miss with the major busts in Russell, Gallery.

But he’s on track though.

He better get better because we're wasting targets on him

Positives: Great speed and strength and work ethic
Negatives: Undependable – both hands and routes; poor mechanics: doesn’t move to ball or shield-off defender … and he has the bad habit of jumping into the air for absolutely no reason.

He was a top 10 pick

I would expect those to contribute fairly quickly.
