The "Turk" is coming...NFL Roster Cut Down Day-Open Thread

Axe_medium

"Coach Wants To See You, And Bring Your Playbook"

That's the phrase that will be resounding around the NFL today as all 32 teams must pare their roster to the NFL limit of 53. That means that by the end of today there will be 704 NFL players looking for work minus players that will be placed on the injured reserve. This will be one of the busiest transaction weekends in the NFL as final rosters will not really be set until this coming Tuesday, when practice squads will be finalized and waiver claims are made.

For the Raiders, the defensive side of the ball seems to be in good shape, but the offensive side, well with injuries to Schillens and Bush and a less than effective line play, I'm hoping the Raiders are able to find another teams' excess. Trades occur at this time as well as waiver claims, so maybe the Raiders will find an offensive lineman (center or tackle), a halfback, fullback or wide receiver. Lot's of speculation out there as to who can become available, like Hartwig and Houshmandzadeh and, there will always be some surprises.

Then there will be the practice squad and who the Raiders will try to sneak through waivers to reclaim, such as Brennan, Tonga and maybe Goethel.

What to you think Nation?  Will the Raiders find some gems this weekend to add to their roster? Use this open thread as the place to put all your thoughts on the Raiders final 53 man roster and all the NFL moves that will be taking place this weekend.

Update with current roster as of 3:00 p.m. PST

Offensive line (10)_Mario Henderson, Robert Gallery, Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle, Langston Walker, Jared Veldheer, Bruce Campbell, Khalif Barnes, Erik Pears, Daniel Loper

Defensive line (6)_Matt Shaughnessy, Tommy Kelly, Richard Seymour, Lamarr Houston, Desmond Bryant, John Henderson

Linebackers (8)_Kamerion Wimbley, Rolando McClain, Trevor Scott, Ricky Brown, Thomas Howard, Quinton Groves, Sam Williams, Travis Goethel

Nick Miller

…need to keep Miller and cut Watkins, who dropped a pass inside the 5 in 49ers game. Miller has the hands and a grip of the offense.

by Villapiano41 on Sep 4, 2010 8:38 AM PDT reply actions

Let's look at the wide receivers.
  • Chaz Schilens
  • Louis Murphy
  • Darrius Heyward-Bey
  • Johnnie Lee Higgins
  • Jacoby Ford
  • Nick Miller
  • Yamon Figurs
  • Shaun Bodiford
  • Todd Watkins

We have to cut three and it seems like Bodiford is the only given at this point. That leaves us with two cuts that have to take place between Miller, Figurs and Watkins. Miller and Figurs have the return edge over Watkins and I think both have been better than Watkins in the preseason. So, it’ll come down to Miller and Figurs for a roster spot if you ask me. I lean towards Miller staying on the team.

100% agree with appraisal. Figures is a poorer replica of JLH. Watkins dropped a perfectly

good pass we needed and sucks on STs. JLH, though questionable over the middle, otherwise has good hands, speed, gets open and can return Ps&Ks.. Miller has shown me nothing but inspirational play and may have the best hands on the team, including Zach’s.

yes, and yes

I have felt all pre-season that Cable has intentionally not played Miller so as not to have him injured like last year. Plus Miller was coming off an injury. Figurs has done nothing to make this team. Miller has done nothing to lose the position. I will be shocked if the choice is Figurs over Miller. I think Figurs had to be sensational to make the team and he hasn’t been.

by Laoren on Sep 4, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

idk, if it came down to JLH and todd watkins i might have to take watkins… that 9’ers game catch would of been amazing no doubt but neither of these two really fit that bill. i like watkins just lil more because hes not timid when it comes to goin over the middle. also Schefter reportin that willie parker is gonna be cut…

Higgins shouldn't be on the bubble.

He should be safe.

Why ???

He’s clearly lost “it”. What ever that thing is that keeps you from worrying about life and limb when your running around a football field with men twice your size, it’s gone. You need “it” to function in the NFL.

by rambis64 on Sep 4, 2010 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Higgins

Higgins hasnt been the same since his bell was rung. He isnt a dangerous return man anymore, and he’s not happy going over the middle. He’s not fearless anymore.

by Villapiano41 on Sep 4, 2010 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions

The Higgins hate is hilarious.

Figurs, Bodiford and Watkins are better? No. We don’t even know if Miller is better. Higgins isn’t very good, but neither is his competition. Also, the guy started the second preseason game so that tells me he’s in good standing with the coaches.

by Rated-R Superstar on Sep 4, 2010 9:14 AM PDT reply actions

if watkins got the same amount of reps as higgins, i think his stats would be better. he may be less of a vertical threat but ill take him goin over the middle more so then higgins. JLH is only good for deep comebacks and post routes. an occasional hot slant route here and there, but thats preschool stuff man.

by frank7da2tank on Sep 4, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Hate?

You state, “Higgins isn’t very good.” That’s exactly the point…so go ahead and contradict yourself, and have that conversation with yourself.
WTF has that to do with hate?

by Villapiano41 on Sep 4, 2010 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

No, it's not a contradiction.

It would have been a contradiction if I said I loved him. When you say someone isn’t very good, you’re not saying you hate them unless you include that.

Go ahead and keep thinking that Watkins and Bodiford are better than Higgins, though.

by frank7da2tank on Sep 4, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't really like him.

Our alternatives just aren’t better and that’s what happens when we’re taking about who should be the fifth wide receiver.

So?

Who said ‘hate’ in any of the comments?
I never stated Bodiford or Watkins were better. My first comment upthread specifically said to shitcan Watkins and keep Nick Miller, who to me is a far superior receiver and special teams player ‘right now’. I agree with Rambis totally…Higgins has lost ‘it’. He’s just a pussy over the middle and wont return a kick.

I hope this is how it works out

1. DHB
2. Chaz Schilens
3. Louis Murphy
4. Nick Miller
5. JLH
6. Jacoby Ford

Neither did Watkins

nor Nixon. Rudd from the offensive line, McFadden the DB is hurt so he isn’t on the field either. Two other DB’s cut but all the rookies other than Goethal who is hurt made the team.
For some reason they are still in love with Figurs.

Mitchell will

Be cut

@AndySlater: If Al does overturn the decision to cut Mike Mitchell, it was SOLELY be b/c it doesn’t look good. Bad PR. Raiders coaches don’t want him.

The notable additions are fullback Luke Lawton and defensive end Jay Richardson. Also, Cable said there still is some discussion as to who the final player waived will be. The Raiders have until 3 p.m. to announce that final move.

Speaking with Cable cleared up any confusion surrounding defensive tackle Desmond Bryant and rookie cornerback Walter McFadden. Both are on the 53-man roster, for now anyway. One of them might be the final player cut within the next two hours, or one of them could be placed on the injured-reserve list.

In other news, Cable said that rookie Jared Veldheer is the starting center, supplanting four-year veteran Samson Satele.

Looking at it this way,

Pears has to go, Loper? Ehh, thing is that I dont remember him getting a shitload of penalties, so is the lessor of 2 evils. And if we can get TJH, either cut the other Loper/Pears or Hiram Eugene.

Hopefully Raiders not done making roster moves

I hope the Raiders front office is willing to take a hard look at the players released to see if they can continue to improve the team. As we all know by now, Seattle released T.J Houshmanzadeh, who could be the veteran receiver the Raiders need. The Seahawks also released Louis Rankin, who seems like a better option for backup RB/special teamer than either Rock Cartwright or Michael Bennett, plus we always have a soft spot for former Raiders.

The Raiders should be looking for a 3rd TE, a FB, and possibly reserve OL.
