Houshmandzadeh to the Raiders?

It's another Over/Under for Oakland. Wide Receiver Chaz Schilens is hurt. Running back Michael Bush is probably going to miss at least the opening game of the year. With these two out, Oakland's offense becomes suspect. Louis Murphy has been dropping the ball a lot this offseason and he has missed some time. Wide Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey has looked much better and probably produced his most spectacular catch on Thursday night against the Seattle Seahwaks when he went up high over the man in coverage and snatched the ball out of the air and tip-toed both feet inside of the out-of-bounds line.

Still what can the Raiders rely on in their passing offesne aside from TE Zach Miller?

What are the odds that the Raiders go after T.J. Houshmandzadeh?

A guy that Hue Jackson is credited for helping to develop. A guy whose play once out-shined the glimmery teammate from Cincinnati Chad Johnson. A guy who made the mistake of going to Seatltle, where receivers end up taking their career to it's funeral ever since Jerry Rice cursed them with that trend.

I want an over-under on T.J. re-uniting with Hue Jackson and adding another weapon to Jason Campbell's arsenal.

The Vikings have already signed Houshmandzadeh.

It happened about three hours ago according to this source, but it is sketchy to say the least. That does appear to be his likely destination, however.

I wonder why they need him if they already have Rice, Berrian, and Harvin?

"It's like Will Smith, remember the Fresh Prince? Get the ball don't let nobody else shoot? That's kinda what the offense can be sometimes, and they're just standing around waiting for Monta to make a play"

Rice is out for at least six weeks as he's going on the PUP list.

Harvin’s migraines are a pretty big issue.

So if that happened............

What’s your take on Vincent Jackson? Too much money? Chokers would want too much? He’s not worth it? What do you guys think? I didn’t see anyone that got axed today around the league (WR’s) that turned my crank. What we have in the WR dept. is NOT ENOUGH brothers. We need a veteren presence. Let’s face it, this is the weakest link on the team. Chaz can’t stay healthy and when he is produces average numbers. D.H.B. is an unproven 2nd year guy and we have to pray Murphy doesn’t go through a “sophmore slump”. Nick Miller can be a factor , but in reality we need big time help with receivers (rb’s) coming out of the backfield to take pressure off a marginal core of receivers. Now that we have the arm(s) we need someone besides the original Miller to make it happen. Am I nuts?

A vote for Houshmahzadah on the Raiders

TJ’s signing in Minnesota is not yet official. TJ is not generating as much fan fare from other teams for some reason. But he should be available for cheap. On the Raiders he could florish. He won’t cost us any draft picks. Veteran leadership and sure hands. We should go after him agressively. The Chargers will not trade V. J. to the Raiders. They don’t want him to him to a division team in which they would have to face him twice a year. Furthermore, one more suspension, VJ would be out 8 games or more. Raiders don’t need that looming over a player asking for big money.

by anhdazman on Sep 4, 2010 8:30 PM PDT reply actions

Pretty sure the Vikings grabbed him

But I’m just not that down on our guys to weep, I Do Not feel the WR position is the weakest link.
Before anything can click on offense you have to have a line to support it, and I still feel the OL is THE weak link, maybe better, but still suspect.
Plus we have Bush out with his thumb, NO proven RB, McFadden we hope will be better But we haven’t seen it yet and if the O line isn’t strong enough to run behind, we’re Not going to have a running game at all this year!!!
Right now I could care less about WR’s, for I think what we have will be fine IF we fix the weakness on the line and maybe pick up a decent back somewhere.
Quite frankly, I have witnessed improvements at WR and on the D, But, I have NOT seen anything to write home about, outside of a rookie (Veldheer) on the O line and the running game? what running game??? We Don’t have One that I’ve seen !! Especially now that Bush is injured.
I just really feel we have more areas needing attention before the WR spot, not that T.J. wouldn’t be nice to have in our arsenal.

by Kevin Coffman on Sep 4, 2010 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

And another area of concern...

Special Teams play that hasn’t been in any shape or form related to being anything special at All, could use some help greatly, before expending dollars on a WR that would be nice to have , BUT not what we Need at this time, let’s fix the areas we’re really weak in before going for star value at the WR slot.
Just my opinion, for what it’s worth.

by Kevin Coffman on Sep 4, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you mean?

WR is one of our weakest spots. We got nobody reliable who can play. Murphy’s a work in progress, DHB is leaning towards bust status, Schillens is probably playing the wrong sport, and it doesn’t get anymore better going on down the list.

Pittsburgh Steelers Notable cuts: C Justin Hartwig

He would up-grade the “C” position and relieve “Vald” to play “LT” where we need his help….

I would like to add “TJH” at “WR” also but that “C” is a seasoned vet and immediate help…

Come on Al, spend the money.

Go ahead and get VJ and Housh. This team DOES need receivers. This team needs someone (or two) that will fight for balls and who will consistent catch them when thrown their way. The passing game HAS to be a threat, or you can go ahead and give up on the running game.

I know we are way ahead of where we were last year, but last year was pathetic. Just because we’re better doesn’t mean we should settle for mediocrity or even average. COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE. The front office, the coaches, the players and the fans should settle for nothing less. This team needs a legitimate #1 receiver that isn’t a TE. Way too much inconsistancy from guys who are supposed to be pros.
I don’t a SB contender overnight, but I do expect guys to adequately do the job they are getting paid for.

Sorry. I’m ranting. Too many thoughts going through my head.

There's a lot of confidence in these 3 and in Nick Miller (Welker2).

But I agree with you – getting VJ makes sense (from our perspective if not StDs). Problem is, Al really doesn’t have the capital.. it’s a vicious circle, we need to win before financiers will invest and they won’t invest until we win.

Investors were there Last year !!!

A group that included Tiger Woods, but they wanted a GM with COMPLETE CONTROL of their picking. And we all know What AL D. said to that !!!!! But after this years decision making, which will go down as the best in the 8 yrs., $5 will get you $10, their ringing Al’s phone as we type. Wouldn’t you be !!!

by papabegood on Sep 5, 2010 11:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Love to see it happen but unlikely

Al is a man of pride. If he signed a veteran WR that would mean he was wrong putting faith in a young receivers group all along and he’s not going to do that. It’s not like veteran WRs have not been available to this point but if Housh comes at the right price, it’s an outside shot he will be a Raider. Anything more than veteran’s minimum is unlikely.

Considering Seattle still owes him 7mil, gauranteed !!!

We could sign him for cheap, plus incentives !!!! I would also take a look at Clayton from TB, and Josh Reed from S.D. He could give us some insight on offensive plays. I could see Al D. signing him for nothing else !!!!

by papabegood on Sep 6, 2010 12:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep, Good Point

Unfortunately for us, because Bey will be starting opposite Murphy, and that’s just wrong, and has been from the beginning. Of course, the official depth chart says Schillens and Bey are starting. Wow.

by Rayder K on Sep 6, 2010 12:01 AM PDT reply actions

I doubt he's coming here...

First, he hasn’t shown himself to be a #1. He has had some great years, but they have come in a system that had a true #1, and a dangerous #3, in Henry.

Second, Al and Cable have both shown zero inclination to put anyone else on the field beyond the youngsters, who have yet to prove anything when it counts. If they didn’t make a move last year or in the offseason, with a WR roster that is/was statistically one of the worst in the NFL, then why would they do it now?

Don’t see it happening, although that isn’t to say that bringing someone in would be a bad idea…

Ravens got Housch (it's per Adam Schefter's Twitter though)

Ravens reached agreement with former Seahawks wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh on a one-year, $855,000 deal. More at espn.com.

I think Coach Cable and Al

want the young receivers to prove themselves with a better quarterback before they go off signing anymore old relics. Something Al has been doing for years.

I've been bleeding Silver and Black for 40 years its time they get back to playing Raider's football

by old raiderdude on Sep 6, 2010 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

Could be..

But if they don’t prove themselves, the team is screwed at WR for the year, not exactly a formula for success…
