Stevie Brown

As some of you may know, stevie brown was the last of the 21 players to be cut to make the 53 man roster

Star-divide

This is an outrage! why? im not saying that stevie would have been the next jack tatum ! NOT EVEN CLOSE! however i liked how he played. being one of the few defensive players to make a huge game changing plays. i know many of you guys liked Stevie Brown and wanted to see more of him what im also outraged about is they didnt cut Erik Pears!

So nation, what do you think of the final cut? was it the right choice or is Davis pulling strings again?

Stevie Brown had a total of 5 Tackels,1 pass deflection, 2 interceptions for 46 yards, and a fumble recovery! through out the preseason! he would have made a sweet special teams player

No, you are wrong......... I'm pretty sure you need to **** *** ******.

Naw, I’m kidding. But isn’t Mitchell Branch’s backup? Branch is a SS, therefore Mike is a SS, his backup. Mike is not good at coverage, at FS he will get burned and eventually cut. Huff, even Stevie Brown are better at FS.

Al Davis is not to blame for cutting Stevie Brown.

They could have cut someone else besides Mitchell or S.Brown but treated the situation as an ultimatum – either Mike or Stevie. Al did not want to lose Mitchell – neither do I – but it was not Al’s direct decision to release Stevie but the coaches who presented a false dichotomy. Brown might have challenged any of remaining FS’s or SS’s – I believe he was that good.

Please.

Al could have overriden the “false dichotomy” if he cared. Don’t try to paint him as a victim. This is the weakest defense you could possibly come up with.

As usual with the Raiders

There is more going on then we know or may ever know to understand the inner-workings of that transaction. Those two players are just one facet of this very perplexing maneuver. The question(s) that should be asked and the answer(s) that should be sought is, why would the “coaches” want to keep Hiram Eugene, Ricky Brown, Sam Williams, Yamon Figurs or Erik Pears over Mitchell?? How and why was Stevie Brown the sacrificial lamb for those 5 players.

There is something else going on there and its either a staff issue or there is something wrong with Mitchell that we don’t know about and has nothing to do with talent or work ethic.

What do you think it might be? Al choosing to keep Mitchell regardless of what “the coaches” thought simply because he was the one who chose Mitchell? Ultimately, it’s Al – if he objected to Mitchell being cut, he could have objected to Stevie being cut too – unless he didn’t want Stevie on the team in the first place.

by Spirals galore on Sep 5, 2010 8:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I can only speculate

Mike Mitchell is only coming into his2nd year and would seemingly warrant further time to develop. From all accounts that I have heard, his primary weakness is his coverage skills, which “should” be able to be developed. On the other hand, Hiram Eugene couldn’t tackle a mannequin, so why not cut Eugene instead? Again, by speculating, I would have to say that there must be some sort of character issue or flaw in Mitchell that the coaches believe that they cannot “coach” out of him.

From the Al point-of-view, I fully understand why he would not let Mitchell be cut, but what I don’t understand is why he would allow Brown to be cut over the fore stated 5.

Jerry Mcd's take

http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2010/09/04/putting-brownmitchell-in-perspective/

I’ve already had plenty of correspondence with readers about whatever problems the coaching staff with Mitchell, and my honest answer is I don’t know. He’s a little high strung and high maintenance. He’s usually of a mind, when playing defense, to be overly aggressive and overpursue while looking for the big play and the big hit. But he practices every day and has some real qualities as a physical safety.

I'll still be sick to my stomach until Stevie is on our practice sqaud

Hiram Eugenes performance against the Ravens last year alone should have been enough to get him cut, not Stevie or Mitchell

Stevie Brown Cut

I don’t think Stevie Brown is going anywhere after his excellent preseason performance. Every Raider fan can see he is a keeper, the Raiders org has to see it as well. I think the team is going to trade off a couple of players for future draft picks, then bring in Stevie Brown from the practice squad.

by Oakfan76 on Sep 5, 2010 10:27 AM PDT reply actions

This is BS.

I cannot believe the best playmaker on defense this preseason doesn’t get a job over Hiram, Yamon or Erik Pears. This is disgusting. Also in regards to Mitchell, he is not great by any means and I hve yet to see why everyone is on his nuts. I think its sad that they evaluate a player based on where they were drafted as opposed to performance. This is very a bad sign considering the season is about to start and we go on the road against a playoff-caliber team to start the year.

Stevie Brown's Achilles Heel

I’ve been keeping an eye on Stevie Brown on TV and during the last preseason game against Seattle which I attended.

He gave up a big TD on his side of the field, he moved too far inside because of the slant, but the receiver changed directions and went outside, Brown was out of position and failed to get close to the play.

He also gave up two two point conversions to tight ends running simple out cuts, Stevie didn’t have the speed or the length to break up the play.

I can see that since the Raiders have Mitchell they don’t need another big hitting safety. As bad as Hiram Eugene is when it comes to strength, he has better speed and quickness defending the pass. I guarantee you this, if Brown had stopped that TD on Thursday or broken up the two point conversion, he would be on the roster and Eugene cut. If we are going to give him credit for good play, we also have to recognize his mistakes and weaknesses.

I was one his biggest supporters, but I do recognize that compared to guys like Reed, Sanders, Polumalu new draft picks like Berry and Thomas, Stevie is much slower.

In conclusion, is it fair to say that Brown didn’t have the speed and change of direction to make the roster as a safety? Or am I missing something?

Your thoughts?

good call

Stevie made some plays based on being in the right place at the right time imo. If he is as great as he is being made out surely he could have found a roster spot somewhere but he obviously had no other offers so signed up quick to the practice squad.

still

he shouldnt be on the practice squad! he should have made the team! end of story! plus he’s a rookie of course hes going to be raw! not many rookies (especially 7th rounders) just come into the game and start lighting it up (which stevie kinda did) he needs to be worked in if you gotta cut someone! cut Hiram Eugene! Nnamdi wasnt the best either in his beginning years! WHAT A WASTE OF TALENT!

Mr. Stevie Brown is a Raider

A few items: he made plays on the field and he had the supportof Mr. Nnamdi Asomugha, I agree with (as well as the apprehension- sickness in the stomach, I feel like I have a missing brother- of him getting back on the practice squad) would rather have him on the 53-man roster. Hopefully a trade happens – two for one to open his spot. Figurs had 7 (yes seven fumbles returning licks & punts for Baltimore so why he made the cut I do not know- did he promise not to do it in the regular season like he did this preseason)?

Also the Silver & Black Pride agreement form must be updated— Thankfully, Mr. Jason Campbell is the leader of the Raiders and not that paycheck collecting draft bust you still have listed as…

There is a reason why he was cut!

Let’s put his place in context here.

He was a &th round pick. That means that all of the other teams passed him up 7 times over before he was drafted.

He’s young, if he has a good attitude, he can still develop. It is not as if we cut a 2nd rounder (Mitchell) to keep a 7th rounder. If this was last year’s team he probably makes the cut.

Don’t worry about it . He had a productive pre-season but it was not without its flaws.

Eugene Is Pretty Good ON SP Teams

I think Hiram made some good plays or was at least close to making the plays on SP teams. Also, if someone gets hurt, you know Hiram can step in. His coverage skills are quite good, it is just he can’t tackle all too good.

However, he has decent range, with good closing speed.

Pretty good is another word for below-average after watching the coverage teams this preaseason.

I know the score doesn’t mean anything but our poor coverage and terrible return games leave much to be desired. Sam Williams (special teams maven), Hiram Eugene (pretty good special teams player), Ricky Brown (special teams life-longer) all made the cut after those performances and yet the only guy who was around the ball consistently gets cut and you all want to use the excuse that his speed wasn’t what they were looking for? Please.

I Agree

Our SP team need help and it is obvious something needs to be done. But, you have to admit Eugene does have good pursuit and takes good angles. I know he cant tackle all that great, but at least he can slow down the opposing teams runner

Stevie...

Brought back moments of ‘Soul Patrol’ glory in preseason. This kid has it. i see retention of Mitchell as a result of his being zero on trading block and Davis wanting to squeeze every ounce of whatever he sees in Mitchell out of him before he’s jettisoned.
Stevie has been retained on the PS, and that’s far better than sending him off without shit.
I see him elevated after a few games and brought in to start. When Mitchell is finally gone. And you guys who refer so quickly to branding people as ‘haters’ because of their opinions on certain players are asshats. You’ve left highschool havent you? Dont wet your pants everytime someone doesnt agree with you.

by Villapiano41 on Sep 6, 2010 3:10 PM PDT reply actions

Mitchell shouldn't even be brought up, he is a SS; Stevie Brown is a FS...

If anything it’s Eugeane the backup FS that needs to be cut. Hence, Branch and Huff start, and Mitchell and Stevie are the backups. Then Stevie can beat out Huff if he can.
