Thoughts on Tom Cable: Has He Really Done a Good Job ??

Now let me tell you up front, I like Tom Cable and what he has done for the Raiders, bringing a needed enthusiam, that was sorely missing for years by the previous coaches, since Gruden. But what has got my head, in this frame of mind is, what he hasn't done !!!! And it's real disturbing too. Watching the Titans game, and who they got for a Line Coach; Mike Munchak !!! Well if you remember him, played for the Oilers and blocked for Earl Campbell, and was mean SOB blocking, made me start thinking about Cable.

First and formost, Cable is a good players Coach. The players bust their azz's off for this man. A very BIG plus for him, which probably kept him from biting the dust last year. But what he was brought here for was to help build our OFFENSIVE LINE, back to respectability. And on this note. I have to say he hasn't done that. The 2 draft picks were good, not knocking them, but with the inactivity of a trade for an upgrade at this these critical spots, being both the tackle positions. The Rooks are the future, and with both of them playing different positions than they were drafted for. And yet NOTHING has been done to fix them most obvious of problems. Mario Henderson, sometimes good, sometimes bad !!! Langston Walker...NO Comment. My mother taught me if you can't say anything good....Well you guys know the rest !!! The Second Team Tackles............hmmmmmmm................ok....ummmmmmmmm, ahhh shit, if they have to play, OUR QB's are, or will be the Walking dead, and the bad thing is, THEY WON'T BE WALKING !!!

Now far as the inactivity on a trade, and now that cuts have been made, and still NO activity on working the waivers, and yes, I know cuts at the tackle position of anyone worthy, didn't happen, but the IDEA that no one was brought in is damn Confusing !!! San Diego made a deal for a tackle yesterday, since McNeil hasn't signed yet.

Here my Question to the Nation: Has Cable told Big Al D., That we don't need to bring in any players,

1) Well be okay !!

2) He can Coach these guys up !!!

3) No one is out there that this team can use !!!

Now Just to let you know, I went at took a look at Tom's coaching history, and lets just say, it's amazing He's in the position he in !!! I mean REALLY , REALLY !!! I would add the resume, but i almost lost this post, and was lucky enough to pull it back from the cursor hell. ( you guys know what that is right, when yourcursor just does it own thing, and hit buttons you don't want hit, and your shit just dissapears) I call that Cursor Hell !!!

Google Tom's coahing history if you havn't already !!!

Because the one JOB, that he was brought in to do, WELL, He Just Hasn't Done !!! Bottom line, He wasn't a very good player, his coaching career is say to least, has been marginal in sucess !!!

You need to calm down with the exclamation points. It makes it difficult to read your pieces. There’s no need to use your own form of punctuation. Just punctuate correctly. What a headache.

At any rate, I disagree with you entirely. You have to look at how long he’s been coach, and what’s come about since then. He’s got the team playing for him (first time in a long while a coach has done that.) He may have been brought here to address the offensively, and I personally think he has. You don’t just get a great O-Line in one offseason, but what we have seen is them do decent (not great) against first team defenses in preseason. The verdict is still pretty far out on that regard.

And yes, I believe he has done a good job. He’s made mistakes, of course, but by and large he’s sort of grown with the team. His mistakes haven’t been all for naught, and we realize a lot of his early troubles were caused by JaFatass. It’s kind of tough to run an offense competently with an incompetent asshole at the helm. This is his year to show that he’s got what it takes.

In closing, really, I think it’s just too soon.

wether the Oline sucks or not..he put players in a position to suceed.

The biggest thing for him was getting everyone to buy into his game plan. Check!!!

For the 1st time in 6 years it look as if the Raiders may have turned a corner. We have structure, we have motivation, and lastly we have people who wants to be a Raider. Cable has singlehandedly weeded out all the bad elements. We went from Bed and Breakast to 1st dowbs and 80 yrd scoring drives. Its not going to be perfect..but dammit as sho as i know fat meat is greasy, we have all the tools andband personnel take actually think about making a playoff run. Dont get to emotional yet about our oline, i believe we will do just fine

I want to be the modern day version of Super Mario Brothers!!! Dont care for *shrooms*, but would love to *get large* and *spit fire*...unless im constantly told "thanks, but your girl is in another castle". That would rate a 8.9 on the ole *Suck-ometer*!!!

I am glad the Cable Guy is in the fold

For the first time since Chucky left we are poised to actually look like an NFL team. Tom is working within the parameters of the organization, as you have to. We have a solid defensive core and exciting/promising young and older players on both sides of the ball.

I don’t know what you get out of the italics, bold print, and exclamation points, but you should stop it – it makes you seem a little unhinged, to be honest….

Your “Don’t like it, don’t read it” approach is fucking bullshit. Grow the fuck up and write your articles like an adult, or don’t bother writing them.

You dislike a certain style – others don’t. I hate Tolstoy and like Dostoyevsky, but that’s not a reson to slam Tolstoy for his style – it’s his, and he can;t help it. I’ve also me people who slam Dostoyevsky for his style. I don’t really mind them – it’s almost genetically encoded (that’s controversial though) that you prefer one style over another.

No because

But still, Campbell won nothing. It was handed to him. That is not winning. Had their been a competition, I think Grad could have taken it. But, eh. Whatever. You’re gonna be a Campbell fan boy, and I have no intention of talking in circles.

I don't have a problem with the caps since it shows he's passionate about what he writes but what is up with the bold italics constantly?

It hurts my eyes trying to read your posts and comments as well. Sometimes I never even bother to read them because of it. That’s the one knock I have personally. As for the Cable-guy, his track record doesn’t jump out at anyone however the guy seems to get the most out of his players which is something that Kiff, Shell (the second time around), or Norv for that matter. Also he isn’t an A-hole who was blessed with more talent and ended up burning all his bridges while he was here like Callahan so I would say he gets a passing grade. Again a passing grade but if he can get this team to make the playoffs this year he would get a solid A.

The cable guy has been doing a fine job IMO. There is no need to enumerate, the above post lay it down very well. I think the lack of trade activity is an Al Davis move. I don’t think Al wants to sign anymore deals until CBA dust settles.

by Horatio R. on Sep 7, 2010 2:41 PM PDT reply actions

Pay Attn: BIG Al's talking about PLAYOFFS this year !!!

I don’t think the CBA issues have any part in not making the O-LINE better, by trade, or bringing in some Other players. Again, the core of this piece, Has Cable Done What He Was to Suppose to do ???? Let me say this. If this team Falters, due to the pass blocking, running game, do you really think Cable will be here next year , considering that was his main Objective when He was brought in !!!

by papabegood on Sep 7, 2010 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Grad can move this offense behind this O-line and if Jason can get rid of the ball a little faster, he'll also manage

But, realistically, there will be problems along the way. For one thing, there’s no depth of talent on this line; so, when when an injury occurs there will be a performance drop (automatically with Pears, probably with Barnes, and likely with Satele).

by Sons-of-Blanda on Sep 7, 2010 3:00 PM PDT reply actions

It doesn't instill to much confidence in me

that 2 rookies can come in who were looked at as projects at the tackle positions, can come in and play better than the guys we’ve had starting at the respective positions. The blowback, is that with all the listed tackles on the team, I’m not sure any of them start on most teams besides ours. Seems like we’ve backed our way into rebuilding our line from the inside out with Gallery, Veldaheer, and Campbell.

I don’t think Cable’s done a great job, but he’s done a respectable job for what he was given. Taking over from Kiffin (who took over from Shell) was a terrible situation and he seems to have at least survived much of it and has taken somewhat of a foothold to the point where this year we should be getting a better grasp on his ability to be the head coach of the team going forward. No more overextending himself with the offensive playcalling, but coaching the team and getting them playing at a decent level and moving up the standings again.

I've my doubts. Consider how our STs performed in preseason; then consider how, we released the two top ST performers

and kept Yamon Figurs (who is redundant) and Cartwright (who is also redundant) .. then passed on someone like LaGarroute Blount – who would have pushed Bush and taken Bennett’s spot. Tom’s criteria for measuring players is a mystery.

You make a good point

Our special teams under Cable have gotten continually worse. Hard to take the preseason into account too much because they are usually trying out different combinations of guys, but seems like they just can’t get it right. Not sure I agree about Blount though since he didn’t make his team either, but I might be open to bringing back Fargas next week, who could at least show these guys how to pick up a blitz.

Blount was beaten by Ringer who is 2nd only to Chris Johnson. Not making that RB roster tells you nothing

Blount could have gone in the 2nd round (no later than 3rd) last draft if he didn’t sabotage himself (and go to the most politically correct University on the left coast) with extracurricular fighting. Watch him at Tampa.

Given this offense, I don't believe he'll be as effective as Grad. If we had better protection, Cambpell would thrive.

Bruce can get more out of these jokers than Jason; and Grad has a natural sense of when to get rid of it that I haven’t seen yet with Campbell.

Yep

Whole-heartedly agree. My polish cousin brings an intensity at quarterback that you seldom see, and the teams responds to it. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati last year were truly amazing for a team that looked so lackluster at other times. He gets out there and makes them believe. Campbell’s more the quiet type, and, unfortunately, this team may well need the kick in the @$$ that Grad delivers.

I think I know why the o-line didn't play well last year......

I think I know why the o-line didn’t play well last year, he was doing the play calling, the game strategy, coaching the o-line, dealing w/ JaFatty, the assistant coach he KO’d……he had alot goin on last year and as we all know if you’re not focused on your job, you’re not gonna perform well. That applies to everyday life. So lets see what he does this year because like you said papabegood, the players play their ass off for him…..and thats all you can ask from a team.

fair and consistent. Clearly was overmatched last year but w/ all the hats he was forced to wear, I cant blame him.

The bottom line is dont expect Bill Cowher or any other established hc to come our way until someone other than Al Davis is the owner of the Raiders. Until that day, we will either have a young up and comer itching for his first job or a yes man.

by xville on Sep 8, 2010 12:10 AM PDT reply actions

He isn't the best, but he does bring something to the table

I think that he has done a good job in some areas, and a suck job in others.

In my opinion, what he brings is the ability to bring everybody onto the same page, changing the mindset of the team. In that, I think that he was able to continue what Kiffin started, because under Kiffin, it seemed that the team was already changing, but Cable took it further, and apparently with less friction.

However, while the lineplay did improve somewhat under Cable’s direction, it has stalled at best, and his apparent insistence on staying with marginal players, starting weaker players over better ones, and not making any moves to improve the line make me question his ability to evaluate talent.

He can’t gameplan or playcall worth a crap.

His ST’s have sucked peanut butter through a straw, to put it kindly.

Now, on the other hand, if he and the team can succeed with assistants calling the shots, I’ll be fine with that. The reality is that the Raiders will always have a thin pool of candidates for HC, until it is felt that the front office… cough Al cough …changes.

Failure builds character; success reveals it

by signcut on Sep 8, 2010 7:16 AM PDT reply actions

To be perfectly fair

He probably needs a couple of more seasons for people to see if the Raiders are truly making progress. He had JaMarcus as his excuse last year, but now there are no more excuses left. Here’s to hoping that even though wasn’t so impressive at Idaho State, that maybe he’ll be learning from his mistakes, there and here. And after seven 11 loss seasons in a row, we all ought to be Jedi Masters when it comes to patience.

Tom Cable's Issues

I do believe that Cable is trying very hard, he just believes he can get blood from a turnip which is really going to can his future here if that continues. Remember how long “Lame” Harris started before he was benched and he recently retired. You have to have ability and the skill set before one can be coached up. Of course Al has the same problem in believing his picks will be “great players” but that’s another story.

by Terrell Randall on Sep 9, 2010 5:05 AM PDT reply actions

Agree and Disagree

I believe Cable has done a decent job with what he was given. I mean honeslty it seems like we’ve been rebuilding since Gannon, Brown, Rice. No stability at HC, I mean how do you expect players to gel and come together when their system isn’t consistent. Under the cicumstances I think he did his best to put together an NFL team. Yes, i do believe we should have gone out and got some vets at WR and OL, but don’t put it all on him ro Mr. Davis. I think they wanted to stick to thier guns and develop what we got instead of trying to bring in to many new faces that would only stunt the growth of our young players. A ‘LARGE’ part of our UNsuccess, was due to ‘JaMarkAss’ being unprepared for the demands of the the NFL level of play, also the burden of duties he was responsible for was a factor. Now we got Hue ‘Action’ Jackson calling the plays and I’m liking what I’m seeing. Look what he did with a rookie QB in Flacco.
All in all I think it’s really coming together now and you have to give props to Cable for doing what he has with what he has to work with…..

Simple fact is

We had Gruden, let him get away, he then proceeded to beat us in the Super Bowl, and we’ve had nobody like him since. We need another Gruden if we want a 4th Championship.
