Jared Veldheer....the next great Raiders Center?
During this past years draft, I was wondering who the Raiders would draft to be their center. The centers they had before like Samson Satele, to me, looks smaller than his listed 300lbs and doesn't seem to be the physical presence you need to be to play center. The same can be said for Chris Morris who they cut. So with that said, I was looking at the center's available in the draft and the only legit one out there was Maurkice Pouncey and he was projected to go late in the 1st round(He ended up getting drafted 18th overall). So I looked at the remaining center's available and there was no centers to take in the 2nd or the 3rd round.....or was there? The Raiders ended up taking Jared Veldheer, out of the tiny school of Hillsdale, to play tackle, originally. He's 6' 8" 320lbs solid(he was 312lbs at the combine). He's very smart & extremely strong. For him to develop into a legit tackle would've taken a few seasons. Coach Cable saw his physical attributes and decided to try him at center and hey, why not? He's very smart so picking up his line-mates assignments and his shouldn't be a problem. He's extremely strong, as I mentioned before, so he won't be pushed around by these monster D-tackles like Morris and Satele have been. In fact, the pre-season game he started against the Niners, he more than held his own against 1st team guys, not 3rd or 4th string guys. Of course he has alot to learn about playing center, but it looks like he's willing to learn and really assert himself as a legit center. Do I expect him to make the pro-bowl this year? Of course not, but from what I saw from his start against the Niners its a great beginning.

U forgetting one Thing
Abrayo Franklin didn’t play in that game, but he has done well considering the last time he played center, was in H.S. !!!
If the Titans land Fat Albert Haynesworth, Veldheer will be baptized in fire. But Veld may shock the world and neutralize
his assignments – Albert or otherwise – so, this game is a huge challenge for him as well as our Linebackers who, more than anyone else, must come up to the line and stop Chris Johnson before he gets into open field.

My God
Have we become this insane that we believe the messiah has come? After……………. 4! 4? 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PRESEASON GAMES! HUH? 4? 4! 4? 4! Oh my God after 4? 4……………… Preseason games? My God! Now I really need a drink and other stuff. This is just insane. If I could give a thumbs down with a no rec to mark I would and ask all that read to do the same. After 4…………… PRESEASON GAMES! The next great center?
Maybe Ford is the second coming of Tim Brown, or perhaps Houston is next Howie Long. Why not? It makes as much sense.
Help me send donations to my alcohol refueling fund ASAP I need it severely now.

Have some faith, we're only talking about what might come to pass and Veld looks better than anything we've seen with a
ball between his legs in a long time.

we have shared some common ground
on many things and agreed to disagree on lots of other things. To surmise a greatness without a true showing in the real season is without merit. I would love it to be true but I shall reserve judgment after at least 1 full season.

Indeed.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Bad day? Haha. Man, you should try yoga or meditation or maybe just light up a joint. Veldheer is doing his best and very well can become the next great Raider Center.
True knowledge consists in knowing that you know nothing
We need to see more of him though.
Lets see him play 60 minutes the entire game, against pro DTs(he couldn’t do this in pre-season because the coaches take him out after the 1st quarter or a bit after).
Right now, we can’t really say this. But what we can say is, is that he’s shown a lot more promise than Satele.

I do plenty
No bad day. My point. He has only played 4 preseason games. Speculating if he is the next great Raider center with that………..ludicrous. Do I hope he is? Yes. Have I said otherwise? NO. Its ridiculous and well its my opinion. Can you say he is going to be the next great Raider center? I cannot nor can I. Has he played well? Yes. Great? NO. Far from proving it yet. As PG2 said we need to see more before we make that assessment.

No one has said any such thing. Are (either of) you sane enough?

Sure you did
Thats why SOB said it. Buddy one thing don’t tell we what I should or shouldn’t be doing. We discuss things here yes. You should be one to talk for supporting Mario. So who is insane here. Take a very long youthful peach fuzzed look in the mirror and think before you say something to me.

My point exactly
I never said anyone did. My comment is directed at speculation of the possibility of him being such after 4 preseason games. That is what is insane.

Well then, to be consistent, you would say that it's insane to consider Houston, McCalin, and Soup as potentially
a Raider great DE, MLB and G respectively. It’s not crazy to speculate that they may some day achieve the distinction but (if not crazy) it’s pessimistic to think they haven’t a shot.

Never said they didn't
Great is a stretch after 4 games don’t you think? Ok so using that analogy I already said something regarding Houston and comparing to Howie. Houston had a pretty good one or 2 games. Do you want to speculate that he is? I say yes they have a shot. I never would associate a 4 preseason game playing rookie with a greatness tab. It is presumptuous. The could be good, maybe great. All of them not likely, one of them maybe. Do I want all of them to be HOFs? Yes. Unlikely? Very. Possible? Probably not. One of them? Maybe. It is called being realistic.

truth be told
I hope we are talking about veld as the next great LEFT TACKLE by this time next year… and if mario plays like mario (unfortunately) maybe by the bye week….
the bottom line is that I would like to have the 5 best linemen available on the field…. and you’re telling me that includes langston walker and COOPER CARLISLE? carlisle has sucked out loud for 3 (?) 4 (?) years here now and it appears langston has earned his spot (what that says about the rest of these stiffs is obvious).
my line would be
veldheer-gallery-satele-campbell-henderson…..
yes, I know i’m putting a division ii rookie at left tackle (over a proven mediocrity mind you) but is that really much more crazy than putting a rookie division ii tackle at starting center (which he hasn’t played since high school)? I don’t think so.
I am willing to be pleasantly surprised by mario’s play so that veld can remain inside and leave samson on the bench… but please, somebody anybody but cooper at RG.
I am afraid that with this line configuration and d-mac this running game will be ineffective at best
I hope my fears are misplaced

Without Bush, I do not expect a serious ground game. Teams will anticipate McFadden off-tackle and sweeping
when he runs at all and Bennett and Cartwright don’t have the Bush combination of explosiveness, acceleration, and power. Our offense now is comprised of swing passes, screens and the basic WR 10/15 out or in, posts, flags and flys. However, with Veldheer at Center, our straight rushing between Gallery and Center and Carlise – improves. Langston isn’t a bad rush blocker – though DMC makes him look worse than he is. Ultimately, it will come down to our QBs using the time they have to get it where it can be caught – that’s it.

Did you see the 2nd meeting against the Broncos last year. That was McFadden’s best game and the one play where he was stopped on 4th and goal was to Cornell Green’s side, not Langston Walker’s.

He'll get his chance
I think it’s a lot to ask from any player to step in and start as a rookie but this guy hasn’t had a whole lot of upper level competition. He’s fresh meat as far as size to fill the role but as far as technique I expect he will learn on the job. That means good plays and plays he will get beat.
I just want to see Veldheer
and Campbell get as much line experience as possible; then look for more offensive line in next years draft -Center.
Now
If only Campbell could boot either Walker or Henderson off the starting lineup, we’d be in so much better shape.
You don't think
eventually it could happen? Cause I’d rather have you playing RT or LT than either of these guys.
Walker would be ok at guard but we needed someone at tackle, either tackle.
Mario could be ok at RT but at LT is just pathetic considering his slow feet.

No. 1 need is OT and we'll probably have to trade to get one at this point.
