Whose spot is he taking?
If he'd just pay me what he's spending to make me stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Nice filler for the rotation and Wauffle obviously knows his abilities, but who is leaving the 53 so Alford can join?

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.
Hell, if this guy fully recovers from his ACL
he can be a lot more than filler.

I agree
but, the ACL ismy concern. That’s why I wonder who will be leaving the 53, when it may well be that while Alford will be part of the 53, he may not be on the Sunday 45.

Agreed and I looked, but I can't find it.
I am shocked the Raiders haven’t promptly released this info. It’d almost have to be a LB as I don’t see any of the D-linemen being expendable.
Sam Williams? Maybe they got a trade worked out for Howard?

Well, he's playing,
but I think that is one of those injuries where they say it can take over a full season of playing before the guy gets back to full strength.
Which would be awesome. Either way, he’s not going to be dead weight.

He played all 4 preseason games
Just was expendable w/ NYG DL on roster

Kelly may be traded, Big John Henderson promoted and Raider Jay backing him
Kelly for Gaither?

If his foot hasn't healed yet, he's finished. But, if it is healed, he would help us more than Kelly will.

Kelly for Gaither
Would Baltimore agree to such a trade? What is your source?
just speculating

Thoracic disk injury (back spasms)
If the nature of the injury to Gaither is back spasms caused by a thoracic disk injury, then his availabilty could be questionable. He may not improve our offensive line if he can’t get out onto the field.
Welcome to the Silver & Black Jay Alford
Wow, last year we couldn’t scream loud enough for the Raiders to bring in another NT – this year we get 2! Cable may have thrown last years starting LBs under the bus for our woes in stopping the run, but the DL has plenty of new faces as well.
Could the Raiders be concerned with Bryant’s elbow or with Henderson generally?
Also, I think either Loper or Pears will be the player removed from the 53-man roster to make room for Alford. The Raiders don’t need both of these guys.
5 healthy WR vs. 10 healthy OL
The Raiders are too thin at WR to cut either of those guys, regardless of talent level.
This guy may be versatile. He is about the same exact size as Houston.
Jay should be able to play DT/DE.

Pears was cut

wow the OL for the DL switch
It’s fine with me since Pears is easily replaceable if their is an O-line injury. I wonder who becomes the T in the T eligible set now?

Freaky big and fast
Bruce Campbell perhaps?
Assuming he is not starting at RG soon, if so, bring in Carlise as a second G on R and slide langston out one slot.
K Barnes possible as well

Oh man, if Bruce Campbell can figure out the pro game...
that would be an awesome option.

THANK YOU
For cutting Pears, the O-line just got better, and we only have 9 instead of 10 now, addition by subtraction!!!

100% Healthy?
This article written last month illustrates that Alford is not yet completely healthy and recovered from last year’s ACL surgery.

I have to agree with TheRaiderWay:
[I]t may well be that while Alford will be part of the 53, he may not be on the Sunday 45.
Not for the first few games at least.
Erik Pears released
According to CBS Sports, the Raiders released Erik Pears to make room for Alford on their 53 man roster.
“The Raiders waived backup OT Erik Pears to make room for former Giants DT Jay Alford on their 53-man roster. Pears started four games for the Raiders last season, two at left guard and two at right tackle.”
Per Jerry McD
Alford said his role has always been that of a pass rushing defenive tackle and that’s how he expects to make his mark with the Raiders.
If he'd just pay me what he's spending to make me stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.
DT Rotation
Maybe Mike Waufle has convinced Davis/Cable/Marshall about the Giants’ philosophy of continually rotating D-lineman, which worked so amazing well in 2007-08. Alford now joins Houston, Seymour, and Bryant to the pass-rushing DT rotation to keep everyone fresher.
Re: DT Rotation
Either way, he’ll be an improvement talent-wise over Pears. Hopefully he’s fully recovered from the torn ACL that caused him to miss the 2009 season.
Pears and Alford play two different positions.
True knowledge consists in knowing that you know nothing
Yes but
I believe he meant as an overall talent, we will be a better 53 w/ Alford then with Pears.

Yes, and there's motivation to bring in another T ... Tony Ugoh?

Good luck big Jay!
Us boys at BBV already miss him, as he will always hold a special place in our hearts for man-raping pretty boy Brady in the waning minutes of the Super Bowl. he has ability; the question is will he ever be able to find it, or will age and injuries start to creep in and win the battle? hopefully, it’s the former.
IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!
Where do you recommend he play at? DE or DT?
What are his pros and cons as well?
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

he's a tackle in the 4-3
now depending on how fast your coaches want there ends in the 3-4, would answer your question. personally, i don’t think he has enough speed on the end, although that’s probably where they’re gonna play him since i think he’s a little light in the ass to be a pure nose. i think he’d be good in a dime or nickel situation where there isn’t so much focus in clogging up the middle.
as far as his pros and cons, it’s been so long since i’ve seen him it’s hard to really say accurately. he has a good bullrush, and can collapse the pocket, if he can get off the block quick. i don’t know how the achilles affected that part of his game, although judging from his invisible preseason, i’d say alot. i wouldn’t expect much from him right away. Rather it’s good depth for around week 8 or so when other guys are chipped up, and hopefully Jay’s ACL will be a little more healed up.
IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!
Ok sweet. Thanks.
I would expect him to rotate with Shaugnessy at End, or have him rotate at Tackle with either Henderson or Kelly, with Seymour being on the End instead. Like the depth he gives us, and hopefully the versatility.
