It's Official: Tom Cable No Longer the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders

Raiders.com is reporting that the Oakland Raiders have not picked up the multi-year option on Tom Cable's contract and that he is no longer the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

From Raiders.com

The Oakland Raiders will not extend the contract of Tom Cable for the position of Head Coach.

Cable was informed that his contract would not be extended on Tuesday.

Cable, whose contract expired at the conclusion of the 2010 season, posted a 17-27 regular season record as Head Coach of the Raiders. He served as offensive line coach for the Raiders from 2007-September 30, 2008, when he was named interim head coach.

The Raiders express gratitude to Tom Cable for his contributions in his four seasons as an assistant and as Head Coach of the Silver and Black.

This is a terribly dangerous game Mr. Davis is playing. The great majority of the players, outside of maybe Jason Campbell, fully supported Coach Cable and played hard for him, and the team was finally building on the offensive scheme that he and Hue Jackson had installed.

Let the speculation run rampant about who the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders will be. Jackson? Harbaugh? Other? Discuss your thoughts on the Raiders not retaining Tom Cable and the impact for the Raiders.

UPDATE:

Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that a source close to Hue Jackson said that Jackson was taking over the head coaching position for the Oakland Raiders. This news comes just hours after Al Davis gave the 49ers permission to interview Jackson for their head coaching position.

If this report ends up being correct, how do you feel about Hue Jackson being the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders? What things do you expect to change with Jackson in charge rather than Cable? Discuss.

Shane Lechler in a phone interview with CSN Bay Area. Shane is obviously upset about this move and comes out and asks Mr. Davis for an explanation. Shane also says that many of our free agents will decide not to return, which is my biggest fear with this move.

This whole thing could end up being a huge Catch-22 for Mr. Davis. The current roster underperformed with Tom Cable, but the roster may get downgraded with Cable leaving.

I totally agree!!!!

Sure he was the HC and he motivated people…. but guess what so does every other HC its what they are paid for but the people behind the real success of the Raiders this year were Wauffle and most importantly Huge Action!!!!! Remember at the beginning of the season at training camp when Aso was saying that JAckson was always challenging the defense to step up to stop his offense….. I think he is going to be a very good head coach and the coach that will take us over the top to where belong at the top!!!!!! look what he did to our offense just think what he is going to do to our defense!!!! I cant wait !!! THere is a downside though Cable guy or maybe it was someone else hopefully still with us somebody had a good eye for talent in the draft but my hunch is that it was cable!!!

GO RAIDERS!!!!!

Since when is a football team a democracy?

Heck, after the Lame Kitten debacle my dead grandmother would have been a welcome HC! Coach Cable fell into the HC position and was never going to take our Raiders into the promised land. Aside from his personal transgressions, I think he did about as good of a job as he was capable of but for Raider fans to be deluded to be believe that he was a first or even second tier NFL HC…I mean c’mon now, let’s put down the koolaid and come back to reality! Granted he has loyal players but that doesn’t mean you don’t make a move to improve the coaching of the team. This isn’t a popularity contest, we’re in this to win! I’ve followed the Raiders my whole life and just because we finally had a .500 season after all these years shouldn’t make us forget that Raiders should be about WINNING! By the way, winning players will be happy players on no matter what team or what sport so forget about the “he’s a nice guy” rose colored glasses approach to this coaching change. Mr. Davis has always sought to find young bright coaches. I have faith that Hue Jackson would make an excellent HC. So instead of all the tears for Coach Cable let’s focus on how we can move forward to improve the coaching of the Raiders so we can consistently be winners once again!

Since Free Agency
Since when is a football team a democracy?

There is a common phrase regarding state and local government policy – people vote with their feet. With the prevalence of free agency in the NFL, players will vote with their feet by choosing not to return to the team due to the changeover (once again) in the coaching staff.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that Cable was a top tier NFL HC – the real problem is that you can’t get guys like that to come to Oakland because of the unique front office situation. Because of that, keeping the players happy becomes more important, and Mr. Davis obviously didn’t take that into consideration when making this decision.

Now we have to hope that the players don’t vote against this move with their feet.

Top tier coaches at one time were also unknowns!!!

Jon Gruden and John Madden were both unknowns untill they took the HC job with the Raiders. By the two plus seasons given to the cable guy it was clearhe isn’t a top tier coach!!! You have to remember that Al is trying to win a SB before he dies!!!

by americaneagle510 on Jan 5, 2011 9:55 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Madden inherited a Super Bowl team

Think Super Bowl II.

Gruden built the Raiders in his image and it worked right up until he was traded.

Part of me is hoping that Al realizes the end is near, and he’s going to restructure the football operations side of the house so that his son is set up to succeed. Bring Ron Wolf in as Director of Football Operations, let him hand pick his GM and Coaches. Spare no expense. Imagine…

I may as well piss up a rope with those hopes, but I gotta hold onto something.

Now has to learn how to work with Al as well as the players without becoming the players guy because Lord knows in Davis’ world, he needs to be the on loved and adored by his players.

He won't.

It’ll look like Hue only came to coach the division games and sabotaged the rest to make himself look like a prime HC candidate. I don’t think that’s the case, but now it has the potential to destroy all the progress we’ve been making this season.

by Rusty23 on Jan 4, 2011 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

Elite coaches are made in Oakland.....

aka Jon Gruden, John Madden, Mike Shannahan. Hue might be the next.

As for Cable. I never endorsed him, he is more of a player buddy than a HC. I don’t see how all you Raider fans can spit on Al and say Cable was the savior. He is not a “good” HC. He is a good player pal. Get over it. This will turn out to be a great move.

by Mr. Elek on Jan 5, 2011 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

that's a good thing though.

if players resent their coach, they won’t even bother playing. The really liked cable, and they gave their all for him. That’s how it is.

Cable was good enough to be better than the coaches of our last 8 years. Yes, Hue was a part of this, but Cable did well enough to be liked by players, thus motivating them.

Plus Cable makes gameplans. That’s his job, and he has done it pretty well this year. You can’t pin all the failures on cab;e himself, as executing plays are a big part of success as well as just practice(the pats org. stresses practice all the time).

This team was improving under cable(including last year), and I fail to see how loosing him benefits us, especially player wise.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Here's a question for you Mr. Elek

How did John Gruden do (along with Bruce Allen) do in Tampa after all of Dungy’s players were gone? You act like Gruden got to Oakland and there was nothing for him to work with. He added pieces but got them to stop underperforming. And Gruden is working where right now?

No one said Cable was the savior. Stability may very well be the savior.

I could shit on Al all I want. I give a fuck about that POS owner. He better get his head out of his ass and get Jim or Jon.
Hue is some stability though, we need to keep him wheter at OC or HC at all costs. If we now lose Hue, we lose all progress.

He had a problem in juggling the QB's,

Grads and JC, and who exactly was the ‘real’ starter. I think Davis, and really, who the fuck knows what he thinks so I am making this up, attached that indecision to our losses to teams that we should have punked hard. Your point about not making adjustments speaks directly to our drop in the second half in Jax, allowing 31 points. Losing that game was probably the most disastrous fail we had all year. We had made our bed losing to Az and SF, but we should have won that game.

The cowards never started, the weak died along the way....

by BlackHeartSilverEyes on Jan 4, 2011 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

Great points.

I think you just nailed the reasons he is gone. Cable made his bed when he went with Grad over Campbell. It was playoffs or bust at that point.

Does this look as bad as it looks?

by Rich Langford on Jan 4, 2011 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

You guys all act like Campbell was playing well when Cable jerked him out of

the Ram game. He wasn’t, he looked like shit and Grad came in and got us that win. We would not even be 8-8 had that decision not been made. Campbell was the reason that Campbell got pulled. Cable probably didn’t handle as well as he should have, but if Campbell would have played better the whole point would have been moot.

JUST DOMINATE BABY !!!

by rambis64 on Jan 5, 2011 7:12 AM PST up reply actions

Absolutely.

The only knock I have on Cable in terms of Campbell is that Grads should not have started the Phins game. It was Jason’s team at that point and Grads wasn’t even fully recovered from his injuries.

It will be interesting to see if Jason becomes even more conservative next year without a fire under his ass. Or, will he get better and actually “cut it loose” knowing he is the guy?

Don't shoot, I'm a man.

Hue knows where his bread is buttered.

Al thinks Jason is the next Jim Plunkett just like he thought Jamarcus was the next John Elway. Hue was smart to let Cable criticize while he stayed in the background. He won’t be able to do that anymore but I guess it got him what he wanted…a head coaching gig.

I said nothing about Campbell's playing or Grads' for that matter...

My point was when it came crunch time for hard decision making concerning those two, when they would start etc, Cable IMHO, punted the wrong way. Cable was even hesitant at the last minute about who’s team it was as far as the QB’s before handing it over to Campbell. That’s not leadership, it;s just trying to placate everyone.

other than the revolving grad situation this year i disagree

campbell can be and is the solid qb we need

the main problems
1. defensive breakdowns and poor schemes
2. inconsistent o-line play
3. awful play at WR
4. inexplicable brain-farts in offensive game planning

the problem with these problems
1. al will hire a new dc
2. al won’t pay for OL free agents
3. al thinks DHB addressed this issue
4. the guy responsible for this is about to be put in charge

define "franchise qb"

he’s not peyton manning or tom brady but very few people are

he is capable of being the starting qb on a serious super bowl contender if the rest of the team comes together as it could in a perfect world. i don’t think you can judge his ability to be a “franchise qb” until you give him some wide receivers who can run a route and catch the ball when the chips are down (beyond jacoby ford)

will that perfect world ever exist? maybe not, but that is beyond his control

I rank his articles right up there with the National inquire. To bad for Cable, i thought he had this team turning around, and the players like him. Shocked to say the least, but then again we are talking about a Al Davis decision.

Maybe as an OL coach

but he’s never proven to be a good OC, granted his one season as playcaller he had an albatross of purple drank around his neck, but he’ll have to go back to being a position coach and work his way back up. Maybe he pulls a Callahan and just coaches OL the rest of his life…

Al Davis takes 2 steps back immediately after taking a huge step forward.

This isn’t surprising but it does piss me off to know that he’s hellbent on making the team die right along with him. Team chemistry is the ONLY reason we’re even at 8-8 and he just killed that. Now I hope there isn’t even a season next year since this has a higher chance of backfiring than anything else.

I pray that 2011 will be Al’s last year running this team. His time has BEEN up.

Cable was the catalyst for the overall team chemistry we've been developing the last couple of years.

Not Jackson. Jackson has been doing a phenomenal job, but he’s also coached us out of quite a few games as well.

Tom was always better at player-personnel and running the overall team than running an offense.

Not to mention that Tom had to deal with 2 years of JaCarcus Rustell. He did an exceptional job given our QB situation. I think Campbell is much improved from the beginning of the season but he still isn’t the answer long term. Hopefully Grads will be our QB coach soon.

Ditto, but don't be suprised if Cable becomes Asst. to the GM !!!

Which is Al D. Cable’s main job, when hired, was the O-line !!! Let us not forget that. They did improve this year, but overall considering due to Hue’s offense, we were more smashmouth of style, vs Zone Blocking style, which Cable preached. It never really prospered under Cable. So if Hue is the HC, we then need a new OC, OL Coach, and definitely a Receivers Coach. Is a new DC coming also ??? Al’s loves offensive minds, so this shouldn’t be that BIG of a surprise.

Cable permitted John Marshall to undermine the Indianappolis game right in front of Al Davis, Tom did nothing to prevent

the demented Marshmallow from executing to the bitter end his ill conceived and ill fated game plan – which, incidentally, is the exact same game plan the mushroom eating rabbit uses every time he faces a good QB, i.e. “avoid pressuring the QB at all costs, just contain him and man-cover those receivers…. we wouldn’t want to get our rabbit fur burned!”
If Marshall had been ‘axed’ tonight there would be celebrations throughout Raidershire.

I wonder if Al is so cheap that he figures

“Why have a coach around that I have to pay when there’s a lockout?” But if the Raiders weren’t going to extend Tom, might as well cut him loose with a year remaining rather than being the dreaded lame duck coach.

But seriously, if Al isn’t delivering Jim Harbaugh as the HC, he better have a damn good reason for firing the only stability—even if kind of stoopid at game management—we’ve had in the coaching position since the Gruden era and its short aftermath.

It happens

Especially in Raider land. I didn’t think the world of Cable, but I thought we needed to keep him to maintain continuity. And now who the hell knows what is going to happen. My faith in Mr. Davis dwindles more and more, but I’m still sure he wants whats best for the team to win again. I hope he nabs a great (not a good) HC who will put up with his shit and keep Jackson as OC. I would love to have Chucky back, but given the nature of Mr. Davis, I doubt its possible. Two and two doesn't equal five.

I don’t see Todd Haley being fired anytime soon. It’s known Weis wants to be a head coach again. The likelihood of him receiving that opportunity in KC is almost zero. There is no conflict—only conspiracy theories from those who don’t have the ability to look at the bigger picture.

If Todd Haley is impossible to work with, why is it only Weis is leaving? Why haven’t any of the other coaches resigned or complained? Todd Haley is a hardass, but he happens to be a RESPECTED hardass.

I eat nails for breakfast, tacks for snacks, and I sh*t nickel.

by SupremeChief on Jan 6, 2011 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

How do you know they won't leave?

Weiss was so anxious to leave he took a college job and announced it before a playoff game.

Yes he does want to be a head coach. I realize KC is an out of the way irrelevant franchise but even they are still a NFL team whose oc’s get job offers.

How did Weiss get one of the highest profile college gigs the first time?

Drunk by noon, but that's okay--I'll be president someday.

by Rich Langford on Jan 6, 2011 11:34 AM PST up reply actions

Again, one can point to several factors to Weis leaving...factors that make more sense.

What’s the probability Florida’s HC will be successful? The odds are definitely in Weis’ favor. Couple that in with him being closer to his family. I don’t blame him for wanting to leave one bit.

Furthermore, I would take these articles with a grain of salt. The Chiefs keep their problems in house and shut the media out. Much of these events are left to speculation. It gives “journalists” such as Jason Whit(less)lock fits.

I’ll refrain from pushing the panic button until other coaches begin leaving and chalk this talk up to unfounded rumor.

by Rich Langford on Jan 5, 2011 2:48 AM PST up reply actions

Well I would also be somewhat surprised if it wasnt Hue

however I also feel that Al has wanted Jim for a number of years now, they have a history together Jim has visited with the team on numerous occaisons over the last few years so it’s kind of seems convenient for Al to pull this move at a time when it looks like Jim is ready to come to the NFL.

This is an article from Kawakami from 2008

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2008/11/04/sounds-like-jim-harbaugh-is-al-davis-clear-choice-if-harbaugh-wants-to-be-a-raider/

My source, who has been very reliable in the past and yesterday repeated the Harbaugh-Raiders talk I’ve heard for almost a year now, only had one caveat: "Everybody knows Al loves Harbaugh, but why would Harbaugh want that job? He could wait at Stanford a little longer and get a real job."

But here’s where I can add: Harbaugh loves Al. That’s what makes this magic.

Getting rid of Cable make much more sense if Al has Harbaugh up his sleeve

Just last month, Harbaugh broke into a huge smile when I brought up his relationship with Al. I don’t think Harbaugh could resist this, as long as Al gives him enough money and they can figure out what to do at defensive coordinator.

It's not like we couldn't see this coming.

The Raiders were floundering after the bye week, with that horrible loss to the Dolphins at home. Al Davis probably looks at the Raiders rooster, looks at the Chiefs rooster and thinks why are they in the play-offs and we aren’t? The O-line (Cables area of expertise) just totally not ready to play at the start of the season, not having the line set after training camp and the pre-season. Not being able to get the team ready to play (win) two weeks in a row.
Davis probably does n’t think Cable is the guy to take us to the next level (playoffs).
I think Al has seen something in Jackson that thinks he is the guy to take us back to the playoffs.

Because

We cannot assume that the recent uptick was anything more than a fluke or done with the help of others in terms of decision making, based on the most recent time period. All good things come to an end. A wise man recognizes when he needs help (Madden said the Raiders need a GM, right? Is he nuts for thinking that?). I would like to assume that Al has woken up and that he will hire someone (let’s say a real head Coach – Tony Dungy, not take a chance Hue) and give that person all the authority they need (draft, style of play on O and D etc) to be successful. Until I see this, I won’t believe he is anythng less than a man who is growing old and has failed to realize his limitations and change with the times.

The difference this year was Hue Jackson. He is the main reason we got so much better. Cable was a great, great guy with the players and the media. No bullshit. Straight as could be. The players deservedly loved and respected him.

But do you keep Cabes and lose Jackson? That’s not a situation I’d want to be in.

Nah, I don't think so

Lechler knows he’s secure because he’s the best punter in the NFL, so he’s free to speak his mind. I don’t think Al will really care what Shane says (not that I now Al’s mind; he’s tough to read)—but I think he really did get mad at Cable for saying, “we’re not losers anymore” after going 8-8, as has been reported.

It's true that Grad & Jason stank up the field that night (46.9 and 26.2 QB ratings respectively)

But Rottenbugger got a free pass with only our four lineman coming at him (Scott and Houston – DEs – each got a sack… that’s it). It’s also true that our 3rd down efficiency was horrid.

there shouldnt have been any question man. Millen at least ruined a so-so team. Be it players or coaches, theres a reason people stay away from this organization now. If they give their money back then who keeps it? Al, which is the LAST guy I want running anything to do with this team now. The only reason he HAS money to spend on these players is because this was once a great WINNING franchise but it seems he no longer cares about that. Ive been calling for a new owner who will implement a great GM and HC that way there is some sense of accountability in the organization and actual progress towards putting together a team on the field that can win consistently and compete for a title. No that makes too much sense.

Instead I have to deal with some outdated stupid catch phrase that’s become more a joke, from a man that no longer gives a damn apparently about the team he owns.

That’s how you establish a GREAT team that continually wins games and is in position to compete in the playoffs.

Talent is one thing, but what good is talent if you don’t have coaches to help them reach their potential? If this year has shown us anything its that we have talent to compete. With the right scheme and coaching staff – free of any bullsh-t interference by the owner- we can actually put a winning season together and make some noise in the playoffs.

Watching the Raiders go 8-8 this year and going 6-0 in the division was about as exciting as watching the Lakers win the finals. After 6 years of hell (or however many years since we lost to Chucky), watching the Raiders finally do something was exciting as hell.

Letting Cable go means we get Jim Harbaugh right? Oh hell what am I thinking… With Ancient Al Davis, we probably gonna pick up some shitty leftovers like McDaniels,

Worse case scenario is: we fire Cable, then Hue Jackson, Harbaugh, Gruden, all

…has never been a head coach. Maybe he’ll be great. With Cable, the Raiders had a known quantity, who had proven that he could turn the franchise around. The source of the Raiders woes over the past 7 or 8 years has been the idiot moves by Al Davis — wasted first round draft picks, and creating turmoil at the head coaching position. I guess it's possible that Cable was just Cable this year and I guess the amount her personally created the turn around is impossible to say unless you are in the locker room on a daily basis

I love coach Cable but it is widely accepted that he is not a great game planner, play caller or tactician so i guess he really was just a figure head who was a pretty good motivator and when you have someone who may leave who actually has some tangible skills as a head coach and I think the proof is in the fact that i think we can all agree that if a team hires him as an OC they are fucken crazy.

by Walker Wallace on Jan 5, 2011 5:59 AM PST up reply actions

if it's in fact Hue,

it’s not that dramatic. Yes Cable was well liked and respected, and yes, the players thought that he had their back and occasionally attempted to stand up to AD. AD doesn’t care about chemistry, premadonnas, locker room, egos, etc, he only cares about winning. AD pays and the players fall in line; when we win, it’s one of the best franchise to play in. You can be you, do their thing, and feel the love of a supportive fan base who can tolerate just about any idiosyncransies. Hue has brought a lot of energy, at to training camp. Can he motivate? It sure looked like it. Did he get the team to run the damn ball? Top 5 in NFL. Is he flexible enough to know that how this team would win some games? Look at KC game, textbook. Pound, occasionally get big play from special team, have your QB stay in control. Do we still need a DC, yes. Can the run defense improve, please. We’re just not good enough. Can we be a playoff team with Hue and a sound DC, that’s the expectation. We all knew the Cable was at risk last year, his slow start didn’t help. The only way to survive the cut was making the playoffs, not “we didn’t have a losing season”.

We’re never getting a A lister to come coach here. Not while Al Davis is in power. Hell, we had something going here. None of us think Tom Cable is the greatest coach ever. He’s average, but he did get the players to gel as a team.
We may even lose Hue if he goes somewhere else like San Fran.

Finally get a guy who not only owns us year in and year out and has managed to really rally the players and get a true, old-school Silver and Black sort of feel back in Oakland, but who also manages to close out a season of absolutely dominating the division with a blowout win at Arrowhead where your defense made our offensive line just look foolish, and how do you thank him? Give him his walking papers.

Honestly, I’ve really enjoyed our renewed rivalry (even though you’ve been kicking our asses lately) and I really hoped to see it continue. I truly hope that this move doesn’t mean that you’re back to insane, inexplicable draft choices and overpaying overrated free agents.

Lechler's telephone interview was interesting

He’s worried that he will have to “re-prove” himself again with a new HC. He also mentioned Gallery and Bush as potentially leaving. He was outspoken to the point of recklessness – it sounded as if he expects to be replaced next year. Why bring down Gallery and Bush though…

Good Move

Cable was a motivator and thats it. Its no surprise that the O improved when JC and Hue came in and Hue began using DMC the right way. Thats why JC and DMC arent vocal about the Cable firing.

Plus if we promote Hue Jackson and get Josh McDaniels to run the O and get a new D coordinator then we should be fine and have some sort of continuity.

The Raiders owner was being escorted to the team bus in the bowels of renovated Arrowhead Stadium and he was lamenting not only running back Darren McFadden not playing in the season finale against the Chiefs, but also rookie lineman Bruce Campbell being inactive. Clearly, it was an indictment against coach Tom Cable and his gameday decisions on which players to dress.

As Davis turned a corner, I said hello and asked how he was doing after the Raiders’ 31-10 blowout victory. He said something to the effect of, not so hot.

"But 8-8 is a good finish, right?" I offered.

"If that’s the world you live in," Davis shot back.

Bill Belichick had an average season with the pats his first year

and he only SLIGHTLY improved the team the next year to 10-6.

Cable was part of the improvement because he had a year working with the system and players. Not to mention the players trusted him, and PLAYED for him. If we kept cable for next year, I think we could have gotten 10-6 or 11-5.

We’ll see how hue does, but 9-7 is my prediction at the most for his first year as HC.

Still gotta put the major blame on the head for REPEATING those mistakes

Not changing calls in such situations, and add in the penalties, the majority to which I refer being calls on the lineman for false starts, holds from blowing assignments by said lineman, and just getting wins.

That’s the biggest determining factor: the lack of wins. I said I’d be pissed with less than a winning record. I’m now more pissed for not being the afc west rep in the playoffs; it was ours for the taking.

Limiting penalties comes in over time and experience. The team was still in early development in terms of playing with each other and such.

Those false starts and holds are on the OL. Yeah, Cable is a part of that, but not the SOLE reason.

also changing calls, yeah, cable is part of that as well. Tell you what though, their defense didn’t do too much help either. If I remember correctly, our defense stunk in that game too. We lost as a team, it was not solely on cable.

Cable's play calling was far worse (e.g. Cleveland 1st and goal on the 2 and Tom calls pass X 4). Plus

when DCs and OCs screw up the HC is supposed to step in and straighten them out. Guess what? Tom would just stand their and let things continue. It’s a challenge to figure out just what he did and what his role was during the games.

Regarding the offense

It was Hue’s first year, incorporating a different offensive system(less 3 WR formations, and more running), so Cable was introduced to it his first time as well. Coaches who work with eachother don’t get great play 1 SEASON. Look at KC for example. It took them a year and a half for the coaches to get a very good grasp on the players and their involvement in the offense.

IN cleveland, That was mostly ALL on Campbell. You know this. A coach can’t gameplan anything if his QB is sucking. Plus if I remember correctly, they were stopping our running game earlier on, so he tried to do play actions and quick passes. Not smart yes, but YOu can’t expect Cab;e to have a great game EVERY WEEK.

YOu named one game, but I can tell you, that Cable did very well in more than 6 games for us this season.

Any Head Coach in his first year does okay.

and in their second year, they always get slightly improved. This happened to BB. His first year with the pats, I think he went 9-7, and the next year 10-6.

Coaches get better over time, not right away. A reason why I would have kept cab;e because I believe we would have been a better team going forward.

lets be realistic here

best case scenario here is cable stays HC and hue remains OC, but theres no way that was gunna happen when other treams are pursuing Hue for HC position. Then we have t orealize whose more valuable, Jackson with his brilliant offense or Cable who gets respect from the players but has made stupid descicions as HC. I rather hold on to Hue at the end of the day. It is unfortunate i liked cable but I like wins, next year schedule is not looking all that easy

I'd agree wholeheartedly that challenges laid out were dumb,

But Cable isn’t solely in charge of challenging calls. They have guys upstairs watching that stuff. That said, Cable wasn’t the worst of the teams problems this year. The DC needs to be drawn and quartered. The Recievers Coach should be beaten publicly, then fired. The DC should then be drawn and quartered again. Hue should be forced to watch the Pittsburg and Miami games alternated with the AFC West games, until he realizes what this team is better at.

I just dont know if Jackson is ready to be a HC

If he said the flipflopping at qb was his fault he might not be ready to be the HC. I would so dearly love to see Al bring in Harbaugh. He is the only Great coach that is plausible in my mind and i dont even know if he will be Great in the NFL, but his brother sure is. If he could step back and give up control for Gruden or Cowher that would be so unbelievable i would think that Id have died. Problem is i probably would die before that would ever happen, Al has always been Al and i dont see him changing now. Jim Harbaugh could really be the answer though, especially with him know exactly what the front office is before ever coaching his first game. Sad about Cable cuz i liked the continuity, leadership, and this past draft was amazing. That being said I do think he was mediocre and we could use somebody better at play calling, but not at the loss of our chemistry and the loss of free agents (both the ones leaving and the ones we could have brought in)

the flip flopping at quarterback was each quarterback's fault... because they both sucked.

If anything there’s more continuity with Jackson because the offense doesn’t change.

Interesting Quote from Michigan AD Dave Brandon
“I personally believe Jim Harbaugh is headed to the NFL,” Brandon said at a press conference announcing the firing of Rich Rodriguez. “My personal belief is that Jim Harbaugh is going to end up with a really, really challenging opportunity in the NFL.”

Is there a more “really, really challenging opportunity in the NFL” than being the head coach of the Oakland Raiders?

Unless he's going to Carolina

with Luck. That would be pretty challenging.

Interestingly

Kordell Stewart was ranking the head coaching opportunities on ESPN this AM. He offered that the worst opportunity was Carolina (total disarray) and the best was the Raiders (lots of toung talent).

That said, he could make a fortune with more power and less headches by going to SF. Not sure why he would take a lot less money with little authority to come to Oakland.

Don't shoot, I'm a man.

by Rusty23 on Jan 5, 2011 11:55 AM PST up reply actions

He probably wouldn't...who would?

it’s Harbaughs relationship with Al that is keeping this rumor afloat. The fact is the niners are going to give Harbaugh whatever he wants and apparently that included Trent Baalke who was rumored to be one of two GM’s that Harbaugh had approved, the other being Mike Lombardi who the niners also interviewed. So the niners are making a full push for Harbaugh and are willing to give a ton more than Al. I doubt that Harbaughs relationship with Al is that good.

AlL things considered, I think most of the media would say Raiders

While I disagree, I believe this man refers to us too.

We can only hope...but

there are millions of reasons Harbaugh wouldn’t come here and they’re all dollars Al won’t pay or authority Al won’t give up or a GM Al refuses to hire. Harbaugh’s looking for big money and the perfect scenario to succeed and we aren’t it and Al won’t pay.

Don't see Harbaugh at all

And he wouldn’t be a good fit right now at all. Offensive scheme would need to change, as well as personnel, which he’d want to control, which ain’t gonna happen.

Al made a huge mistake

Was the firing only to ensure Hue doesn’t leave? Maybe. But let’s be honest, Hue is a smart dude who is a minority – many teams could just be interviewing him just to fulfill the Rooney Rule. That’s the ugly side of the rule – a lot of owners will just interview guys for show, it must feel demeaning to the interviewees.

Cable was a guy the players played hard for, he loved the Raiders, and just looked like a Raider coach: a big fat, tough guy who liked to punch fools in the face. And, he got this team to .500 in less than two full seasons as head coach after so many losing years. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT, MR. DAVIS!?

This saddens me greatly. I’m not sure Hue is ready to coach, but Al is obsessed with finding those hidden coordinators and asst. coaches that will be the next young great coach. He did it with Gruden, thought he was doing it with Lane Kiffin, and probably thinks he’ll do it with Jackson, who is 45 and has never been a HC. I have my doubts.

Often wrong but never in doubt

we all know our rushing was much improved but because the other parts of our offensive plan/ability we were too one dimentional

by YoLev on Jan 5, 2011 12:02 PM PST up reply actions

Hahaha what?

the passing game was too one dimensional? Maybe that’s because it is one dimension.

Still, you need to compare the stats to the previous year. But even more importantly, you are presenting the stats in a skewed fashion.

You can’t use 1st downs and TDs passing when they kicked ass at getting them running. You shouldn’t use completion percentage without yards per pass attempt. They were 20th in yards per pass attempt. They don’t have a high percentage passing offense. It is not a West Coast system.

They weren’t 22nd in total yards, they were 22nd in passing yards which is totally decent when you see they are 2nd in rushing yards.

Does this look as bad as it looks?

I don't know why anyone is surprised by this move

We all knew Hue was the next coach, I actually thought Cable was going to get the axe last year. Unless we made this move now, Hue would have left. This is Al’s guy for the future, and it was pretty clear cut that this was the direction we were going.

Now we need a DC and a new WR coach… Maybe Jerry Rice?
