Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

This is a disaster

*Swearing inside*

First Tom Cable now Nnamdi Asomugha , we are well on are way to becoming a playoff contender with a bright future to bottom of the NFL again. Without Aso we will become the worst secondary in the NFL coverage wise.  Shane Lechler said we will lose Robert Gallery and probably Michael Bush over ther Cable firing so there goes our backup RB and best lineman. Aso was apparently a Cable fan just like the rest of the team. If we want to keep him we will have to give him a huge contract. Aso once said he will always be a Raider and finishes what he started , problem is he started his contract and now it's finished .

Without a coach, a plan and lots of key FA's likely not coming back I think Aso will want to leave. Oh Al Davis... Why won't you just fuck off? Seriously, there isn't a better term for Al Davis at this point, just fuck off.  First he fires the coach that got the whole locker room on his side, brought us out of NFL hell, puts up with Al's shit, has the best draft in the NFL and gets fired? He's senile, seriously who puts a clause in Aso' contract where if he didn't increased forced fumbles he was cut?

Looking at our FA's this year is sad. Aso, John Henderson, Bush, Routt, Zach Miller, Robert Gallery, Satele, Khalif Barnes and Seymour. ALL these players were key this season. I suspect Henderson will come very cheap like he did last season so we should keep him but I think we have to cut our losses with Routt and Gallery since neither will be cheap and will get big contracts elsewhere. Also we need that money to try and keep Seymour and Aso, the 2 best defenders we have and the sole leaders of the team. Without them we go from one of the best defenses in the NFL to worst with no leadership. We have to use the franchise tag on Miller, we won't be able to sign Aso, Seymour and Miller to big contracts this year. Seymour will want a long term deal and were not allowed to franchise Aso. After that we will likely lose Satele and Barnes.

How do we replace 3 key lineman? Well, either marginal free agents or drafting. All of a sudden drafting a OLB to replace Groves isn't smart and we may have to just stick with him. Were going to have to draft a LG and center. Draft a CB later and sign someone if we can. We do have Jeremy Ware and Chris Johnson, neither are great but we are going to have to make sacrifices .

Without Miller we lose our whole passing attack, without Seymour and Aso we lose our leaders and the guys who make our defense what it is. Even though we are 8-8 and were almost in the playoffs we are still a joke cause of these types of moves. And because were about to be in the gutter as well

AL is close to being the worst GM in the game history.

The only thing he has going for him is DB’s and a fluke pick here and there. We won’t have a real team until AL is gone. If I was Hue I wouldn’t be the head coach with all this stuff going on. Hue should only take the job if he has control over the coaching staff

He’s what 88? He will take us to the grave or if he becomes bed ridden. He’s got congestive heart failure as well. So in all honesty he wont be around much longer, it all happens quickly with that issue. Hes going to seem fine until the last 2 weeks. It happened to my grandpa and a family friends grandpa.

i have faith in ware.

that if it comes down to it, and he puts in a nice offseason, he’ll be a solid contender if we dont sign anyone else at CB (maybe Brandon Carr,Lito Sheppard,), altough i would like to resign Routt

I know i don't know it all... its just what my parents call me

by Mr. Know it all on Jan 9, 2011 4:33 PM PST reply actions

I don't mind a little...

but when will guys have enough with the Al Davis bashing. Where were all these people bashing Al in early 2000 when we were in the super bowl. Let the offseason play out and we’ll look at things then. As far as Nnamdi, the man has an agent too, maybe to resign him the first time around we had to make some concessions in his contract, I am sure everyone thought Nnamdi would take less snaps then last year. (Had he had taken more snaps the last year he would still be under contract. Agents get paid to work for the players.) For the people that want Cable still, he was due 5 mil and it just wasn’t worth the cost at this point.

Ps…either Al has all the control or not…so if he running it all as most say, then all the haters of Al need to take a step back and thank him for the draft last year….and if you aren’t gonna give him credit for that by saying others made the picks then he not in charge of everything, so get off his back like every decision is his. Its one or the other folks

Doesn't matter. Fuck Al Davis. He's a POS owner now. When you are a certain age.... just stop man, stop.

It makes you look egotistical and selfish when you don’t want to hang the gloves up and you are old as fuck and you forget stuff and need diaper changes. Hey, we will all some day be like that, but this assole is doing more harm than good now. This isn’t the Al Davis of the old days you know son.

by Starburst. on Jan 9, 2011 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

he's been the same forever

this stuff didn’t just happen over night….it is the same Al, it just hasn’t worked out for the moment…let the man have an offseason and we can judge. Lets rely on what we know,
1. Al doesn’t like losing
2. Al wants to get back to the Superbowl
3. Al owns the team
These are just 3 of a thousand reasons Al does things for the better of the team not for the worse. I mean just last year he traded for Campbell and hired Jackson so the man is still competent in my mind the team. Find me 1 owner who has never messed up, give the man his due

and as I stated before, in the early 2000’s when Al was the same were you spewing this venom or it was all good then. Cable had to go at 5 mil a year, lets face it he was the player’s friends not their coach. and as for Aso, he didn’t reach the contract goals, sorry we gotta move on and try to re sign him or we could talk about how much we hate Al for overspending and let Aso get away

The goals were crazy, it was for him to increase his fumlbes recovered for fumbles forced or something like that. Who the F makes that an incentive for the leagues best CB? That is just fn stupid

all he had to do was play more def. snaps

he only played 14 out of 16 games…who would have thought he would play less snaps…when they were signing the contract 2 years ago Al may have had to throw in these clauses because of the agent. the fumbles and the ints, were backups in case he didn’t play as many games, unfortunately no one threw at him so it was hard to improve those stats. But the snaps played should have been easier

by raiderrealist2023 on Jan 10, 2011 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

Back in the early 2000's Al had Bruce Allen as a GM and Gruden as coach

He hired Bruce because Al had been running the franchise (into the ground) himself and it wasn’t working out so well. They all worked together to build the last great Raiders teams of those days. Then Al trades Gruden to Tampa and Bruce Allen follows him there and they beat the team they built in the Super bowl. Since then, Al is back at the helm and predictably, we sucked for years again.
So no one was spewing venom at Al because he did have a GM, coach and staff on the same page. With Cable at least the team seemed to be coming back to being together at least, and Al had Cable to bounce ideas off of. That’s the reason for the last draft, Cable and the scouting dept. had Al’s ear and convinced him to draft the players we needed and Al still got Bruce Campbell and Jacoby Ford too. If it had been just Al we would have (at the laughter of all) drafted Bruce Campbell 1st and Jacoby 2nd
You can go on and drink Al’s Koolaid all you want, but the past is the best indicator of the future and old Al’s track record when on his own is shit and until he proves me wrong I’m gonna say we’re fucked.
If he does manage to, on his own, turn the franchise into a perennial winner, I write my mea culpa right here

Yes

And if you look at the previous glory years, he had Ron Wolf. Without a little help from his friends, oops, I mean indentured servants, Al has no one to temper his genius whims and he becomes mortal. Al knows more about football than probably anyone in the league but as SOB posted somewhere else, he doesn’t understand the modern fooball player. That…is a killer. Al has always needed help and the older he gets, the less he seems to want it and the more he surrounds himself with yes men like John Herrera.

If that's what you are interpreting from it but your example is not a very good one.

A better example would be someone going on an Atkins diet and not working out at all and then when that doesn’t work going on a South Beach diet and not working out and again same results or lack thereof.

The ballerina-body obsession is what I meant

You can’t imagine the sales pitch these days (“now close your eyes and imagine the body you want to have…studies have shown that visualization, etc.”). No definitely not but my assessment of a man who seems to have drifted into dementia seems pretty fair.

Al Davis always has his hands on the defensive side of the ball assuming he knows the best way to attack is with a man to man. He never puts much emphasis on zone or blitz schemes and less on front seven help until recently with the past draft and the Seymour trade. The first year Gruden was HC he hired Wille Shaw as DC originally the secondary coach in New Orleans. He implemented mostly cover 2 and it worked as the team was ranked 3rd overall in defense, Woodson had his best statistical year here with 5 INTs and we doubled our win total even though we had David Klingler and a bunch of other no-names at QB. Al because he wanted to see more man coverage decided to fire Shaw and hired the mediocre Chuck Bresnahan who is currently not calling plays for any NFL at the moment. As far as the coaching, he never thought highly of this area either as none as far as I can remember have lasted longer than 4 years including Gruden after back to back divisional playoffs appearances. All the Al apologists will start with their argument of he has forgotten more than I will ever know about football but the key work they don’t seem to comprehend is forgotten.

CB Man works great if you have the personnel. Unfortunately, neither of our Safeties have the knack

and the drop off from #1 to #2 CB is so steep that #2 gets worked. We need to upgrade from Routt & Johnson (Ware may workout) … and we need a dominant – full package – Safety (one who can support rush & pass D (without being burned and arm-tackling and one who can stunt and blitz.

Maybe, if we lose Nnamdi

we’ll be forced to play a different defensive scheme. Perhaps a Tampa 2 scheme or something that takes the pressure off of the CB’s and stops the run better. The one thing about zone is most everybody on “D” is facing the QB and more picks result from that fact alone, along with the CB’s and Safeties seeing that the play is a run sooner.

A good QB just floods a zone and drills it in. Also, the Zone requires high football I.Q. and

most of our DBs are, well, they are gifted athletes.

I thought were going to say they were special.

However there are more defensive packages you can throw at a good QB if you can implement a zone blitz along with basic man coverage as opposed to say running man coverage about 95% of your plays and you never have to worry about dishing out $17 million a year to keep your corner happy.

lets be serious, Aso has an agent too. People act like Al was questioning him, Al gave him the bank twice over, I highly doubt he wanted the clause but he probably had to put them in. That’s contract negotiations at its finest.

its an easy task hearing it, but from Al’s stand point why even have that in a contract for this guy? i would keep him no matter what, or atleast trade him for a 1st round pick. seriously this is not a smart move in anyway and YES its Als fault. I blame him for this entirely, i blame the last 8 years now on himentirely i blame the horrible signings on him entirely. he did draft Aso and turn him into a corner

pretty sure that was beneficial, he also had a part in bringing in Campbell and seymour. Taking a chance and hiring a qb coach to be your o coordinator was Al decision (see Hue Jackson). Three years ago when Al was trying to re sign Aso he had to do anything possible. Nnamdi’s agent probably got the clauses put in, and with that said it will be Al who will work his hardest to get Nnamdi back. Its easy to pile on Al but I hope your ready to give him some credit once it all gets turned around.

A clause in Nnamdi's contract automactically voids the contract

if Nnamdi didn’t better his numbers from last year in downs played, picks, fumbles recovered and sacks. Well he was hurt so he didn’t play as many downs and he had no picks, fumble recoveries or sacks, so the clause voids the contract and did. The clause also states that the Raiders cannot use the franchise tag on him either. So we’ll have to bid with everyone else to keep him.

Did anyone really want to pay a CB

16.8 million anyway? That is absolute insanity. We could get champ bailey for half that.

Would Champ Bailey want to come here without

Nnamdi to play opposite of? Champ wants to leave Denver because of all the turmoil there. We are the picture of turmoil this off season.

idk about that option but its probably a players option so its up to him

Mark Herzlich and Colin Kaepernich are playing now.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Kaepernick is tearing up the BC defense.

The BC defense is top 10 in the nation. maybe top 5, not sure.

I don't see any of this as a disaster

Let’s be honest. This is not a very good football team. If it were, we’d be playing games right now. That being said, screw this roster. Highest payroll in the league and I get to watch 8 wins? Offensive line-minded coach and I get to watch a false start on 25% of the snaps? Let’s clean house. Start with Lechler and whoever else wants to lead by whining. Then on to our over-paid, franchise maiming corner. You won’t see anywhere near the money you were getting. Not from us, not from anybody. Don’t let this Nnamdi drama go on too long. I’m glad he had that crazy contract stipulation. Now with the CBA looming, we may get him for less. If we don’t, I’m sure we can fill the many glaring needs with the coin we’ll save.

You've got a point

it comes with a hard edge as usual, but I found illuminating, the NFL salary chart you posted on one of the other threads that showed out of the bottom 10 teams in salary paid, 8 of those 10 made the playoffs, and of the top 10 teams in salary paid only two of those 10 made the playoffs. That was extremely telling and shows we’re off in our approach to assembling a football team.
As far as blowing it up and starting over, I be all for that if we had Al, a GM and head coach that had a plan and were on the same page, like back when it was Al, Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden building a team, together and with a plan. If it’s just Al (as it has been) however, I’d probably be for building as we have been and wait til Al kicks the bucket.
Al needs help, but refuses to get any and surrounds himself with yes men like John Herra who tell him what he wants to hear instead of what he needs to hear. The truth, and that is the problem.

I'll miss Nnamdi

Mainly because when people took shots at my RRRAIDERS, right before I’d resort to swearing and name calling, I’d always point out that we got Nnamdi. We made Nnamdi. Farmed him. The other reason is because I’ll have to replace his fathead in my RRRAIDER ROOM. The upside to it is that they just got a sweet DMC stiff-arming a donk fathead.

He's not gone yet

but if he wants to stay, he’s gonna have to leave us money to sign other free agents, including some of our own. Kind of a “home town deal” as it were. DHB, Tommy Kelley and even DMAC need to similarly step up and restructure their contracts for the good of the team, so we can sign who we need, to get to where we need to be. As you stated before, we have the highest paid team and we’re not very good. That needs to change!
