Congrats on another nail biting win for Hue and the Raiders. Just win baby was in full effect today, due to a debilitating loss of Jason Campbell. Next man up has never looked scarier. There is no doubt we will have to sign another quarterback, the question is will it be somebody to start or be Kyle Boller's back up? I hope we don't get forced to use Terrell Pryor next week, although I don't know for sure that he isn't a better option than Kyle. Even if we don't sign a new starter we need another quarterback. I don't think we want to risk having to put Shane Lechler in at quarterback, even if he is now 1 for 1 with a td and a 158.3 career qb rating.
The option I am most interested in pursuing is David Gerrard. He is the most similar to Jason Campbell out of anybody we can pick up. He is a game manager that does have some playoff experience and probably has a big chip on his shoulder now to play well when he gets a chance. The problem is he is 33 and we have no idea what type of shape he is in. The fact that Miami didn't already sign him puts a question mark in my head.
Another option already mentioned his Carson Palmer. Really though, he is not going to be traded from Cincinnati without a kings ransom and is also in his 30's and had a very suspect season last year. Does he have anything left and is he worth risking him quitting on us like he did them? I think not. If the Raiders made a move for him I wouldn't cry in my Cheerios about it but its about as likely as Al coming back.
Speaking of a Kings ransom there is always Matt Flynn. To make a move for him would be committing to him being our franchise qb. Green Bay is not eager to move him, especially since Aaron Rodgers had 2 concussions last year. One thing helping us here though is Grahem Harrell had a good enough preseason to instill some faith in him. Still, Flynn has one good game in which he lost. Do we want to turn our potential playoff team over to somebody with no experience? Do we feel good enough about Flynn to make this move. My gut tells me no.
Two other back ups worth asking about are Vince Young or Matt Lienert. I don't see either of these guys coming cheap nor being reliable enough to add. I have trouble picturing the Eagles allowing Young to leave with Mr Glass as their starting qb, and the Texans Schaub has gotten beat up more than any other qb over the last 2 weeks so they might need Lienert soon. Neither Guy is worth what we would give up, I'd take Flynn 10 out of 10 times.
My least favorite option is also the most probable. Trent freaking Edwards. He didn't look good in preseason but he has had moments of good in his career. He is a veteran who knows our Playbook a bit and would probably be a back up to Boller. I think that's probably the most likely scenario. Kyle Boller is a veteran and should be better receiving some snaps this week. He didn't play God awful and is probably going to be our starter. One of the biggest problems I have with Boller isn't even his fault. Its that it really leaves the door open for TP supporters to cause a rift in the locker room. Who knows, maybe TP could perform well, what I do know is I don't want to risk HAVING to find out. Here is another giant obstacle for coach Jackson who has deftly maneuvered around bigger ones so far. Good luck Hue, I will be anxiously awaiting your move. In Hue I Trust, but damn I really hoped we wouldn't be in this situation.
