It is safe to say that I did not see that trainwreck coming. I was too busy during the late games to pay attention, but I glanced at a nearby TV just in time to see a highlight of Kyle Bollar's pick 6. I only had time for a few glances, but I did also manage to catch a highlight of Carson Palmer's pick 6. The catch is that it wasn't even the game that was playing! I saw about 5 minutes of the Packer game and just so happened to catch those two awful highlights. I was sickened enough by that to be grateful to not have been watching the rest of the game.
I am not shocked by Kyle Boller's awful performance, even if I tried to hope otherwise. I am shocked though that we thought that he was our best option going into the season as our back up quarterback. I have never seen anything I really liked about Boller, and this did nothing to change my mind. I figured Hue must see something in him and I will differ to him on this I guess. Now I really have to wonder how we let ourselves get into a situation where we had to rely on him. THAT was better than what Trent Edwards would have been able to do? I understand cutting ties with Grad as a precaution to a split locker room, but it weakened us too much at depth in the most important position. However, I will take Carson over Gradkowski any day, and we probably wouldn't have made that trade otherwise.
Speaking of Palmer. As awful a game as this was, I think he got some valuable playing time. It is going to help him in the bye week. He has a tape of him playing now, not a year ago, to watch and study. He took his first hits of the season and it will get easier from here for him. We saw the rust and the reason he didn't start today which would have made sense if Kyle Boller wasn't such a perfect example of what somebody who should never start an NFL game looks like. I don't think it counts as making an incorrect choice if all the options are wrong though. No option we had was going to work today.
As horrendous of a loss as that was, there is no need to go put on your chicken little costumes. The sky is still secured properly above us. This game was just an anomaly. It was being inadequately prepared for the loss of Jason Campbell. At least since Palmer didn't start he wont have to look back at that being his first start as a Raider. I believe when we play again he will be ready. I am excited to see what our team does coming out of the bye. I have plenty of faith in them and want to see a dominating bounce back performance. This game was the equivalent of somebody learning how to drive. Just because you backed into the garage door doesn't mean you will always be a bad driver. It just means you have to get better.
This loss sucks, there's no way around it though. I hate that we were ill prepared, but I don't believe that will become a trend. We still have a winning record going into our bye week, and we have a lot of time to fix things before our next game. The bye is coming at almost the perfect time, its too bad the perfect time would have been this week. Lets pick ourselves up and wipe the dirt off. We have plenty of time to get over this game, lets use it wisely.
