Who should we HIRE as our GENERAL MANAGER?
| By Pat Kirwan | NFL.com |
Running an NFL franchise isn't easy. Can you evaluate personnel, manage a salary cap, negotiate contracts, select a head coach, handle the media, make tough decisions, cooperate with an owner, deal with the league office and, most importantly, carry out a vision for a winning franchise? If so, then you qualify for the job.
There are only 32 such positions as general manager in the NFL, and there may not be 32 people capable of handling all the dimensions of the job. A number of owners will be looking for a front-office executive to steer the course over the next few years, and they are all looking at the same pool of talent.

| Bill Parcells has guided Miami to quite a turnaround in just one season |
The first question that needs to be answered is this: What type of leader do you want? A guy with experience that comes in with a proven plan? A younger person with less experience but new and fresh ideas? Someone closer to the age of the owner who can relate to the boss? Someone who can recruit the best coach possible? A man who really knows the talent floating around the country in the draft and on the free-agent market? How about a guy from one of the smart, business-minded franchises that makes the owner more money while still providing a winning team? Getting the right person for the job is complex, but a number of teams will be looking to this list for the perfect fit.
A look at recent front-office hirings will help categorize the candidates into four groups. Group 1 is comprised of experienced executives with a track record who are possibly looking for work, or the Rich McKay model, the former Atlanta Falcons GM. Group 2 is a relatively new concept where a proven coach now takes over the front office rather than coach the team, or the Bill Parcells model, for lack of a better term. Group 3 is the proven club executive that does not have total GM power. He can be lured if you hand him the keys to the kingdom, and as such this group will be labeled the Jerry Angelo model after the Chicago Bears GM. Group 4 is the young understudy who has paid his dues and is ready for the challenge. This group will be labeled the Thomas Dimitroff group after the Atlanta Falcons GM.
Here are the candidates in alphabetical order:
Group 1 (Rich McKay model)
This group of candidates has done everything required of a GM; there is no learning curve. Show them where their office is and they are up and running.
Charlie Casserly: Former GM of the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans, Casserly is now working on CBS' "NFL Today" show.
James Harris: Just resigned front office executive of the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Ron Hill: Former front-office executive for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons, Hill is presently assistant director of football operations for the NFL.
Mike Lombardi: Former front office executive for the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders, in addition to club experience with the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles.
Carl Peterson: Just resigned as president of the Kansas City Chiefs after 20 years. He is well respected in NFL circles and may want to continue his career with another team.
Floyd Reese: Former general manager of the Tennessee Titans for 13 years, Reese is now working in television.
Group 2 (Bill Parcells model)
If Parcells can leave coaching and still turn around the Miami Dolphins from the front office, then so can a number of former head coaches who have the experience to run a franchise. These three candidates could find the right coach to run the team in the same image and likeness they had when they coached, and all three have a solid working knowledge of personnel.
Dan Reeves: Former head coach of the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.
Marty Schottenheimer: Former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers.
Dick Vermeil: Former head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.
Group 3 (Jerry Angelo model)

| Scott Pioli |
This may be the strongest group, and it also would take some compensation to get these guys out of their present positions. If they don't have total control of the draft and the hiring and firing of the head coach, it's possible to get them. Any one of these five would be excellent to fix a franchise in need of leadership. New England's Scott Pioli is the hottest name in the league right now, and Pittsburgh's Kevin Colbert would be a steal if you could get him out of Pittsburgh.
Kevin Colbert: Director of football operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Tom Heckert: General manager of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Bill Kuharich: Vice president of player personnel for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Randy Mueller: Senior executive for the San Diego Chargers.
Scott Pioli: Vice president of player personnel for the New England Patriots. (Now GM of the Chiefs)
Group 4 (Thomas Dimitroff model)
The people in this group are all from successful organizations and could impress an owner in an interview. They have been trained by high-profile executives and should carry the ability to bring the philosophy of a winning program to a new club. No one really knew Patriots personnel man Tom Dimitroff before his video interview with the Falcons last year, and now Atlanta has clinched a playoff spot, thanks largely to Dimitroff's first draft pick, Matt Ryan. Roll the dice and that could happen again this year with someone from this group.
Mark Dominik: Director of pro personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
John Dorsey: Director of college scouting for the Green Bay Packers.
Brian Gaine: Assistant director of player personnel for the Miami Dolphins.
Ron Hughes: College scouting coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Scott Studwell: Director of college scouting for the Minnesota Vikings.
Doug Whaley: Pro personnel coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
By no means is this a list of the only 20 people capable of running an organization, but it's a good start when it comes to finding the right guy to run a club.
(Fill free to add your own personal choice for GM if you don't see there name listed above.)

Half those guys
have nice positions already and won’t want to leave.
Mark my words – Hue Jackson will be our GM and our Belichick.
"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in s*** and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.

My choice at this point for GM is Jon Gruden. If he hooked up with Hue Jackson, together, those two would have a Championship

1999 to 2007 – Hired by owner Al Davis to become Senior Personnel Executive working closely with the owner on all football matters. Liaison with head coach and owner; responsible for pro and college player evaluations; and handled veteran contracts.
Stung by the JRuss bust in 2007.
He know the Organization well and did a pretty good job I thought. Especially with vets.

I am no clucking rooster though lol For my money I want Gruden like Sons said. There is not a personal move I hated more than sending Gruden away and when I hear him talk I think he sounds like in his heart he will always be a Raider. He has worked with Hue in the past and they think alike. Having a GM and coach on the same brainwaves might be the most important aspect to success. They have to agree on the type of players and I feel like hue and Jon would. I like the idea of Lombardi as well but I would prefer Gruden come home.

My thought's exactly Sons... Everyone is hurt and affected buy this lost. I know Al want's to win & so do i. The buisness side of football does not stop because someone passes away, thats just a fact of the matter.
If you felt this was to soon to discuss, (hypothetically speaking) Why did you enter the “GM discussion meeting” (OZ?)
This is a “buisness” matter that has to be addressed sooner than later.
Ask yourself, not (W.W.J.D.?) but (W.hat W.ould A.l D.o?) when a 3rd of the Season is left to be played?
Wollow in hurt feelings, or put on his “Raiders Uniform” (signature track suit) and GET READY TO PLAY SOME FOOTBALL!

all good, i am still coming to terms with him being gone and I just don't think this is a discussion that should be had right now
Pretty sure it has been confirmed that Mark and Hue will be making the personnel decisions for te rest of the season. As Amy Trask has said there has been a succession plan in place.
I personally hope Mark has learnt enough from his father to take over and not have to hire someone else.
"We’re going to be a tough, rugged football team that walks with a swagger and plays the way the Raiders used to play." Hue Jackson
Let's not forget that Mark was at training camp every day this year and has been involved in the draft for a number of years
"We’re going to be a tough, rugged football team that walks with a swagger and plays the way the Raiders used to play." Hue Jackson
He doesn't live for football like MR. Davis for that matter they may be no one left on this planet the lived football like Coach!
Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP
This.
Having seen the case of the Bengals, I would be a little worried if Mark wanted to take on a similar role to his father. The main thing I know is what I posted below – Al’s own words saying that he always struggled to understand how he could make the tough football moves.
Fortunately I think he knows his limitations. He may get involved with the business side of things more but I suspect he gets a GM to largely handle the football side of things.
In a 2010 interview Mr. Davis said that Mark is involved in the business side
And that he doesn’t want to manage personnel. Yesterday Amy Trask said that Mark will hire a GM eventually but would work with Hue to make decisions in the interim.
I think it’s safe to say that we’ll have a new GM before the next draft.
"Weakness on both sides is, as we know, the motto of all quarrels." -Voltaire
Based on what Al's said in the past
I don’t think Mark has the inclination to get involved in football matters, even if he has the knowledge.
As I’ve said in another thread, I would love to see Hue made both head coach and GM.
"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. I'm with you on this one Scewfish.... Mark does not get my vote for GM. I find it hard to believe that's where his strong points are.
Hue knows the game and knows (players)
Players respect him and want to play for him all around the league.
We witness that this off season, with a numerous amount of free agents naming Oakland as a possible landing spot for them. (Whens the last time that happen?)

Coach and GM very rarely works though and aside from belicheck I don't think it has for anyone in the past ten years
There is just too much involved in GM duties now for me to be comfortable offering that role to anybody. Mike holmgren was a great coach and he couldn’t do it either. Maybe hue can, but I find it unlikely and could be the straw that breaks his back. I like hue too much as our head coach to want to risk losing him due to being unsuccessful at the double duties. I am much more interested in Sons idea of Gruden.

Madden would be wonderful as GM and would not transgress on Hue's turf. Parcells is an asshole

I don't want his meat-cleaver approach or his vindictivness, he is the opposite of Al regarding treating
players like human beings.

Madden will not take the job.
He might act as an advisor, but not the GM.
Parcells has not proven to be a good front office guy.
Or even a good coach without Belicheck.
Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth.
-Mike Tyson
madden working with the organization in any capacity is appeciated...
Parcells has that turnaround season with the dolphins when he started out as their front office guy. (just sayin)

You don't bring in some to run a franchise that has rune people away from the franschise....
So may great coaches have come through the doors and had a start and learned from Mr. Davis. You really want to talk about a coaching tree… Most of it starts with Mr. Davis.
Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP
He was being honest.... we was not in a good situation... if they cared for his input that much then it was his responsibility to tell them the truth about how he felt...
now its a bit of different story…
i see your point tho.

and that can cost you alot in terms of talent & players!

Im not sure
That Parcells is the genius everyone likes to think he is. I believe Belichek was the driving force of the Defense in New York and the tuna has not won the Superbowl anywhere else. Yea I have heard the Sean Payton story before I just dont think hes the answer I like Gruden hes young and brash , hes got a scowl that would make the other GMs back down and I think with some of Maddens tutalege he would be fine.I would love to hear from Madden as posted by someone else here.

I'm not sure about Jon Gruden
Sure, we remember his time here fondly, because he turned the team around and basically was responsible for getting us to the Super Bowl.
But he won the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay with Tony Dungy’s players, and look at his track record after the Super Bowl season: 45-51, with only two playoff appearances and no playoff wins. There’s not a lot of impact players still on the Bucs’ roster from Gruden’s tenure, either.
He’s a charismatic dude, and a decent coach, but I don’t think talent evaluation is necessarily one of his strong suits. Perhaps a lot of the talent he brought in with the Raiders was more thanks to Al Davis than him.

but he won a SB with Dungys players in TB.He still built a SB team.

His demolishing us led to his downfall in Tampa. He inadvertently gave teams the blueprint to beat him.
Hue would be the coach though no Gruden. The GM will not have the authority to dominate the coaching decisions, just the personal decisions and Jon knows players. His quarterback camp on espn was one of the most interesting shows during this past draft. He knows players and knows hue. The financial aspects idk but I’d bet he knows that too. He is tough as nails and honest with a great eye for scouting. I see no reason he couldn’t succeed as a GM.

John Dorsey is one of the greatest scouts to ever live and one of the nicest guys ever.
How come this article doesn’t have a Ted Thompson model? He was the GM for the sea chickens when they got to to the superbowl and he has done wonders for the packers. John dorsey has worked very close with Thompson and would be a great fit too. He would very much believe in building through the draft which is something we have already started to live by after our last two very successful drafts.
