Around SBN: Now They've Screwed Spurs, UEFA Willing To Review Rule

Raiders.com is confirming that the Oakland Raiders have signed veteran wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh to a 1-year deal worth approximately $500K. The 9 year veteran has played with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2001 through 2008 (5 years with Carson Palmer) before two one-year stops in Seattle and Baltimore. Over those 10 years, Housh has caught 616 passes for 7,091 yards and 43 TDs.

I have mixed feelings about this move. On the one hand I want the team to do whatever it takes to make Carson Palmer feel comfortable to keep our playoff hopes alive this season. On the other hand, those who worried that Coach Jackson was delusionally remembering Carson Palmer from his All-Pro 2004-2006 era may be having some of those fears confirmed as Jackson again brings in someone with whom he is familiar who had great success in the '04-'06 seasons.

The Raiders have not announced a corresponding roster move to make room for Housmanzdeah, who will wear #84.

Thanks to Marcofromda510 and R8RFAN12 for being the first to post this information on S&BP.

hopefully they cut nick miller

he is a waste of a WR spot on the roster. I was not for signing TJ, but now that I think about it, he has to be better than Miller. Maybe the Raiders are waiting until 5pm to announce the cut… You know, Miller time! LOL

Well then it looks like Ausberry may be on the block

None else on offense would be expendable. Could remove a defensive guy )Groves, cough cough), but that wouldn’t be wise in case of further injuries.

I'm fine with this move...

Murphy is not playing @ a acceptable level… Chaz stay hurt… Moore slowing down a bit… DHB heating up… Before u know it teams will start doubling him… Then what?… Moore will be fine, but the others are suspect… Ford is a slot WR… He is a true 3rd or 4th WR… T.J. Is now in the Silver and Black and that is the 1st reason I root for him… No point of complaining like it will change something…

by GODSxWARRIOR on Nov 1, 2011 4:12 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Biletnikoff said a few years back that TJ was a guy that he really liked.

Notice how HuJax said that he made the “sticky” catch for the Bengals. For 500K and Murphy & Chaz not contributing, I’ll take it.

Tonga back to practice squad…

Chaz wasn't really targeted much by Campbell

So he either wasn’t getting open or Campbell didn’t trust him. That might change with Palmer, and Chaz is a great down field blocker. Murph hasn’t caught up to where he needs to be, but hopefully the bye week helped him get there. DHB has been a revelation to this point, and I can only see him improving with more targets. We need to get our deep routes going more angular. The go routes aren’t there, so we need some deep crossing routes or post corners or skinny posts…

i can see the sexy appeal of bringing him in

DHB and Ford,Murphy, or Shilens on the outside, and TJ in the Slot. Tons of speed to take off the top and leaving TJ free over the middle for Palmer’s Go To guy. Worst case, he doesnt preform and we dont resign him at the end of the season.

by Marcofromda510 on Nov 1, 2011 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

This

and he has Palmer’s trust. We’ll work him on underneath stuff out of the slot, almost as second TE, then we’ll sneak one of the burners in there for a seam rout over the top.

all things considered, especially the price tag, it seems not at all a bad move

while many don’t care for T.J. and that’s apparent, the guy has a lot of experience and can probably help right away. We heard similar crap about Hagan when he was signed, and he has worked out well so far. We’re not expecting him to be our number 1 or 2; we just need him to help, provide some depth and a reliable target for Carson where Murphy currently isn’t, and it’s difficult to call Chaz that ever considering he’s on the sidelines way more than he plays.Chaz can’t help us there.

yeah, someone's getting the axe

Maybe Murphy or Schilins?
Neither of these guys have been able to play too many games in a row without getting injured, and I mean at some point the organization needs to move on…..just a thought, I know they are speedy, and have made some exciting fast plays for us, but (check my old posts if you wish) I have held for a while now that at some point Schilins & Murphy’s inability to stay healthy becomes a handicap for our entire WR corp

by Toolshed1485 on Nov 1, 2011 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I can agree with Schilens being cut, but I think Murphy can still be valuable on the trade market if we get him back to his old form. He won’t be long for the Raiders unless he picks it up, but he won’t just be dropped, he has value.

good point

I’m nervous with excitement and fear about all of these move in the wake of Al’s death< i still trust in Hue (although I was upset with last weeks debacle) but there have been so many moves in the past week and we need to see how this team has handled it. I’m excited that guys are gonna be fresh, healthy, and hungry as I don’t think there is a player on this team that doesn’t cringe over the gift we gave KC last week. I heard it called the perfect storm for Oakland to lose, and while I do have some issue with the mishandling of the QB situation and some calls Hue made, in retrospect I now believe that last week and last week only was the way KC beats us at home this year. QB uncertainty, Mcfadden down, Janikowski kicking points down, and McClain down was the ONLY way we lose that game.

We're playing more multiple coverages

and blitzing more. Sheppard isn’t the same CB he was in Philly, but he’s better than Joe Porter. We had two CBs healthy against KC, and still made Cassel look almost as bad as Boller (not really a feat of great significance, but work with me, here.) Sheppard gives us another cover person, which frees up Huff to roam around and wreak more havoc.

If we brought in Sheppard the week before the Green Bay game, I’d be shaking like a leaf, but it’s Tebow and a shaky Phyllis Rivers the next two weeks. We needed a CB and we could have done worse than Lito Sheppard.

I'm A Believer In "DVD" But He Does Lack Experience...

Sometimes what a Vet has lost in ability is made up by his awareness…Being very savvy…Understanding what’s going to happen instead of just reacting to what has already happened…That type of edge takes time to develop…

Now does Lito have it??…Not sure but I would suspect he does so after a few plays when he has had time to get a grip on what the “QB” is wanting to do his veteran experience may pay off with picks…Also he should already know something from film study and past awareness against some "QB"s n "WR"s against whom he’s familiar…

You are correct. I forgot about that pickup.

My guess would be Hagan, Tonga or someone goes to IR. We can continue the practice squad stashing of Tonga for the year and it will be our backup if Reese goes back down. Hagan has his moments, but seems to lack a consistent role on the team.

by Big_Ant on Nov 1, 2011 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I think this might end up being a brilliant move, although that completely

depends on how Palmer comes into his own. In regards to our receiving corp, I think the one thing its really lacking is Veteran Leadership (I know we have Hagan, and he is a veteran, but he’s competing for a starting spot and not trying to “lead” himself out of the starting rotation) TJ, on the other hand absolutely knows this may be his last NFL appearance, and happily takes 500k for a 1 year leadership role. I like it, and if him being around helps Carson, then I’m even more for it. We have a lot of young, hungry guys, but they’re surrounded by other young healthy guys, they need a veteran (like seymour for the front 4) to motivate and elevate everyone’s play. I foresee TJ filling that role nicely.

I think it is less about Palmer and more about providing the WRs with a guy who knows how to catch the throws that Palmer makes and how to read him. He can provide tips and what to expect, and lay out a visual blueprint for what to do.

I was concerned with DHB being able to handle the passes that Palmer would throw, but it turned out that Ford and the others needed it. Having someone with experience catching those throws will give them something to work from.

by Big_Ant on Nov 1, 2011 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Did you remember the first throw Palmer made against KC?

He knifed it between two defenders. He definitely still has the touch. Every QB goes through a little rut, Manning has as well. I hope he gets reenergized with Oakland.

by autumn_fart on Nov 1, 2011 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

you talking about the bullet to DHB between the two receivers?

That was sweet, I don’t know if were talking about the same play, but he did totally make some “touch” throws that only an elite nfl QB can make.

CJ goes to IR….with CJ unhealthy, DVD playing better, and picking up Shep, CJ seems like the obvious choice

by onedeepboricua on Nov 1, 2011 4:41 PM PDT reply actions

I guess the thing is that although we have a stable or young receivers that we all like

None of them except DHB is performing consistently. I think back to Hues comment in preseason about Hagan performing because he studies the playbook instead of playing xbox all night and perhaps this is a bit of an issue and bringing in TJ who is a strong leader and been a probowl player will set the standard for the younger guys.

they also run bunch formations that ensure no one can get a clean jam on him, ever...

but it essentially gets a guy open almost immediately and Brady has at least that long to hit four options and he finds the best one—usually Wes.

Pittsburgh and Lebeau did a bangup job taking Wes and Gronkowski away for most plays for the initial three seconds, and Brady looks like shit when his blocking breaks down, which isn’t often, but they planned it well.

I don't like this move at all...

First, As you said this further pushes the idea that Hue is effing delusional! Second, Houshmanzadeh is 34. Now, I get the idea of trying to give Palmer a familiar target in hopes of getting him into the system easier, but I don’t see any benefit from this signing. TJ is only going to take reps from our young receiving corps, and although it may benefit Palmer for these first few games (I doubt it will be significant if at all), it could be costly to the growth of receivers like Murphy and Hagan who deserve the reps… Even Palmer has stated that there is no need (in reference to TO, who is better than TJ) to bring in another WR because of the depth we have at WR. Jackson needs to stop thinking immediate and get back to the long term view that we were building in the preseason.

Hue needs to stop will all this “signing the Bengal’s rejects” madness and get back to coaching… Next he is going to try and sign Chris Henry (RIP) to a long term deal… These are not Irish coffee decisions, these are tequila decisions! I think he has lost a step since taking over the role of Al Davis, and unless he corrects it this team is going to regress and I may have to start therapy all over again!

I know I am probably being a little bit pessimistic about all of this and even a little overly dramatic, but I was at the Chiefs game for my birthday making my 23rd birthday officially the most depressing birthday I have ever had (I got beat up on my 7th , arrested on my 16th, and wrecked my car on my 19th: all of which were more enjoyable for me than the Chiefs game). So I’m kinda mad a Hue right now and although it isn’t lit, the torch has definitely been doused in kerosene and the pitchfork is being sharpened at this very moment… OK not really, but if one of these old timers tells me to get off his lawn I will cut him! GOD I’m grumpy, time for a sandwich and a nap!

dude you need to stop, breathe, open you mind and read some of these other posts

for 500k this move is cheap! its a one year deal! pass or fail this changes little with “long term view” of this team. Wether you want to admit it this team is in crisis mode switching QBs mid-season and sustaining several injuries. TJ is a pro-bowl veteran WR and will provide much needed leadership to our young WRs and also help these other guys in adjusting to how to catch carson. Be positive bro, last week was a bs loss that would have never happened if we had Jano and Mcfadden healthy and Carson knew more than 15plays of our offense. Keep your head up bro KC loss was a fluke, not a dooming sentence! Go Raiders

by Toolshed1485 on Nov 1, 2011 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I know it was a fluke (that last section was about 60% sarcasm)

I just think this QB crisis mode that we are in is causing hue to make a lot of rash decisions. Now that TJ is here who do we cut? I cant think of an single person I would cut for TJ… I mean we got rid of all of our burden players, like Sam Williams, In the preseason. Only player that makes any sense to cut is Chaz, but I feel he has more upside despite injuries than TJ does. Now, let’s be clear on one thing… TJ is not a probowl vet… he was a probowl player who is now a vet… big difference… Larry Fitzgerald is a probowl vet… TJ has great hands but can’t create separation and will not rack up YAC.

Also I am concerned less about the cost and more about what it is hue thinks he is doing… There is no need to add another WR to this roster. Maybe if we played a game with Palmer and our WRs and it didn’t go well I could see this move being made, but jumping to this move out of the gate tells us that hue has little to no faith in Palmer’s ability to get the timing down with these WRs (which if true does not bode well for the future).

Tonga can and should be waived if Reece is completely back

He wasn’t a good lead blocker, was a liability in the passing game, and just isn’t ready to be a full back in this league. Houshmandzadeh is a security blanket that’s familiar with our HC and QB. This ain’t rocket surgery. He’ll make some plays, and Palmer will look to him in certain situations, plus he’s always been an excellent route runner which could have an impact on our young WRs. He has always been a more technical WR because he didn’t have great speed.

Timing in an offense takes more than two weeks to create, at least this move give Palmer a familiar face to look to.

We just didn't put the game in Campbell's hands that often

Moore’s a rookie who had a couple great games. The offense changes a lot when you change QBs. If McFadden is out, I think you’ll our WR corps step up.

"Our receivers are doing real good right now, in my opinion, with the explosiveness and all the young guys that we got. There are so many, I can’t even name them all. Just adding one more play-maker to the puzzle, I don’t see how that can do anything but make us even better."

Whos going back to the practice squad? Tonga? Hagan? Cj? Schillens? None of them are real game breakers for us. Tonga…we got Reece. Hagan and Schillens….we got Whosurmomma.CJ….we now have Lito. No real loss anywhere with the addition of a servicable slot reciever. Cant wait for this Denver game! Sundays are always good when your team is poised to dominate. Hell…im tebowing as I type this!

Carson Palmer's development in our system is of supreme importance.

If signing Housh can help him with that, so be it. I don’t care at whose expense it comes.

It was one fucking play

it happens. Kurt Warner got Boldin’s jaw broken against the Jets. This ain’t Madden, this is real football played by real people. Every QB has gotten every WR they’ve played with lit up at some point.

Palmer is far from a perfect QB, but Campbell was limited, too. Even Tom Brady and Peyton are limited. They make mistakes and throw picks. it’s a part of the game.

I don’t see how a video of TJ taking big hit shot is an indictment in him. Seems like you have scoured YouTube and only found one bad drop and a few of him getting hit.

I see TJ as a bridge between Palmer and the WR's

He will be able to teach the young guys some technique and mentor them so that Palmer can gel with the group more as a whole. I don’t see TJ as a major factor on the field though. More of a sideline and practice guy who will come in on 3rd downs sometimes.

Well...

While I think we were just fine at the WR position and I hope we don’t cut someone like Hagan, having a vet like Housh could be really good for our young group of wideouts. And if having him around make Palmer more comfortable, then so be it. Let’s face it, we need all the help we can get with this transition. And it’s got to happen fast if we want a shot at the playoffs.

Veteran WR Presence!!!!

Have been a need for the Raiders for years. Hopefully TJ has something left, I recall him being pretty solid in the red zone with the Bengals. As long as he come in with a great attitude and unselfish I’m good with the move. It should pay off later on during the seaon when the games matter the most. Huge 3RD down conversions to move the chains consistantly. Time will tell if TJ can get the job done, lets give him a chance nation…..

Not sure how anyone could/would criticize this signing

Great move. Low cost/risk…high reward.

We want CP to succeed, not “suck seed,” right? If CP worked out with TJ in the off-season and threw to him for, oh I dunno, most of his career in Cincy with much fruit, what is the downside? Are we REALLY worried about losing Chaz? Have we ever had Chaz? I’d love the guy to come through, but I’m just not seeing it. Someone try to convince me…de-activated last week v. KC…doesn’t smell right. We’re not cutting Murph. Not sure why anyone would even float that. I say we cut Chaz and Tonga, and pluck up Mike Karney @ FB to bruise up the middle of some D’s.

My view — TJ catches ’bout 35, 5 TDs.

U guys watch the csn special for the raiders?? Good stuff it’s on YouTube. Makes me feel really bad for him. He’s a cool dude and he should be our starting qb. I’ve been rough on him but I always supported him especially in arguments. Cut boller and hopefully campbell stays by taking a smaller paycheck. I kinda dislike the Carson trade a bit now but what’s done is done and I will support the starting qb except boller…. Maybe. I wouldn’t trade Murphy just yet. He was our best wr at the beginning of last year and our best in 09. The tj signing was good and bad. I think it will workout though but don’t know if he will contribute at all. Hopefully some future key 3rd down conversions.

King: Tebow won't be Broncos' starting QB by Jets game...The Mighty Quinn Coming Soon!!!
Add Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King to the growing list of Tim Tebow’s doubters.

“The biggest thing the Denver Broncos need to do at the end of this year is to sit in a room and say ‘Kyle Orton — out, Brady Quinn — in as a backup, Tim Tebow — we’ve got to trade him or try to get something for him’ or whatever it is they decide. They need to decide something going forward about their future at quarterback.”

Fox Sports reporter and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer called Tebow “a running back who can throw, not a running quarterback.” Glazer also said the Broncos revamped their entire offense last week to a more college-style offense disguised as a pro-style offense to fit Tebow’s strengths.

by PantyRaider on Nov 2, 2011 12:55 AM PDT reply actions

Tailor-built offense still wouldn't solve Tebow's problems...Start Running The Prayer "O"!!!...LoL!!
“Mechanically, he’s just so unconventional,” said the personnel exec. “He’s a thrower, not a passer, and he has a slow release. DBs close fast in this league. And I never thought he had good field vision in college. He misses wide-open receivers. I just think the percentages are low here for long-term success.”

And if a team built a system around him? “I don’t even know if you could do that,” said the exec. “At some point, you have to pass, when they stop the run, and refuse to let you run (as a quarterback). If he can’t do that consistently, it’s gonna be tough.”

So here it is…Our opportunity to make a final statement in their “Tebow Experiment” and nail that lid on his freakin coffin!!!
