Injured Starters, New Quarterback, Tenacious Defense..Raiders Win!!!

After the loss to Denver I wrote a post "Raiders Lose...However, there is NO Need to Panic" With that said, I knew what many doubted.... The Raiders are the best football team in the AFC West....With losses to KC & Denver, the Raiders beat the San Diego Chargers in their house for sole possession of first place in the AFC West.  The defense showed up tonight and played hard, Lito Sheppard had a solid game, and our D Line played hard all game long.  Carson Palmer is getting more comfortable and the Raiders are well on their way to being AFC West Champions.

There was NO need to Panic!! The Raiders Football players were seething after the Broncos game, every player on the Raiders team wanted to play the next game. Why, because they all knew they should of whipped the Broncos, they were upset and embarrassed.  The Raiders are playing with more at stake than just wins and losses, they just loss Coach Al Davis.  Now I will say this again, The Oakland Raiders are the best football team in the AFC West without question.

Defensively with all the turnovers in the second half the D did NOT quit, they played every down.  Our second unit really proved they can play, they stepped it up and got the job done.   Lito and Stanford did an outstanding job tonight on the corners and the D Line, 6 sacks and all kinds of pressure stayed the course 4 quarters..

For those that have been hard on Carson Palmer, get over it, he is the truth, and you will see improvement every game.  Carson Palmer did an outstanding job against the Chargers and considering he had No Camp, No Organized Off Season activities, No team anything and showed up in Oakland was handed a playbook with the equivalent of a foreign language in it, and was told you are our starter, he has done nothing less than killed it.  Can you now begin to see the Football team the Raiders really are?

Star-divide

Lets talk about what we learned from our back ups this game, and the heart this team showed to play until the last second.  By the way, Michael Bush is a beast and would start for many teams around the league.  He has more than proved he is worth being a long term Raider, we all know DMC is our guy, however, we also know he is a little injury prone, to have both on our roster is a great change up and should one get banged up, we don't have to stress on our running game.

I felt Lito Sheppard was a good acquisition in the preseason, being of Cornerback pedigree myself, I always considered him a solid player on the island and he proved his worth last night.  I have been hard on Branch, but when I see my Safety making solid tackles wrapping and bringing his man down, he will always have my utmost respect.  I love the big hit, however, I will take fundamentally solid tackling over that any day.  Now of course, it wasn't perfect, however, it is a sign of what they are really capable of.  Philip Rivers is one of the leagues best QB's and the Raiders D kept the heat on him all night.

You will see a renewed Raiders Football team, they will be playing to Win it all the rest of the season, and though Palmer had a few problems, he will get his football senses back completely soon.  He will feel the guy running up behind him, remember he has only been in organized Football for a few weeks in over a year.

I expect the Raiders to go 11-5 or 10-6 and win the AFC West...

We have seen our defense play a good game

We have to play at least the next 3 games before we can say we are out of the funk. We have the Viking, Bears, and Dolphins. If we win all three then there is no need to worry but beating the Chargers isn’t a season changer anymore.

by Micheal Y on Nov 11, 2011 6:49 AM PST reply actions

Actually beating the Chargers was a season Changer if you are a player....

The Chargers game was a defining game in the Raiders locker room. Again the second half had turnovers, a 4th quarter with no scoring by our offense and a defense plagued with injuries that was forced to man up and did so. If you were on a football team as a player that just went through what the Raiders went through, losing their starting quarterback, losing games in the second half, signing a new QB then being defeated in a heart wrenching way against Denver, Michael Y you may not think so, however, every football player in that locker room knew this game was a season buster!!! Lessons learned? You don’t give up, you fight and push until you die!!! Considering the lesson learned in Denver the Raiders will come out swinging from now on and will continue to swing until the final whistle. Sure the season isn’t over, however, beating the Chargers was a season changer, a loss would have sucked the life right out of the Raiders locker room.

Raider Nation, all hand's on deck or get the hell off the ship! That's the way it's gonna be around here from now on! If a 7th & 5th round pick gets you Aaron Curry (a former 4th overall 1st rd. pick) instead of a couple of crap-shoots a year later, then fine and if dealing away a couple of first rounder's gets you a proven franchise quarterback like Carson Palmer and a legitimate shot at the playoffs, then great, you know why? Because our team is standing behind it's motto & legacy, "Just Win Baby!" and "Commitment to Excellence" instead of "Suck for Luck" and "Give Up". Imagine if you were a fan of a team that actually bought into that!?!

Absolutely

This was a must win game and everybody in that locker room knew it and more importantly, played like it!

This was MOstly The Defining game of the season for this team !!!!

Why Panic WAS such a strong word, considering 3 of the losses incurred, Buffalo, KC, and to the Donkeys, with a possible loss to Cleveland(coaching decision) worry by the Nation was warranted !!! REMEMBER the last 7 yrs. pryer to last !!! So you can’t blame the Nation for their apprehension. This win help put those worries at ease, but this attitude, play, and getting our players healthy for the rest of the season, is key !!! The penalty factor was also big !!! REALLY BIG !!! We need this attitude for the rest of the season, to make the playoffs. No going backwards from here !!! The only thing we can’t control, is the injuries !!! Pray on it I guess, is the only thing we can do !!! Once the deal for Carson was made, Campbell became expendable, sorry for that JC. It is what it is !!! Hopefully , we’ll get a decent draft pick for him, if he’s not a FA. (not Sure on that) Not sure we be sticking around to be the # 2 QB, But I would love it if he did !!! Bush has to be paid like a #1, if we plan on keeping him !!! I stated this to boast your theory of no need to panic, Rod !!! The Team is in a really good spot now, and all that’s needed is to stay the course !!!

We need to keep Wiz at center

He was impressive,

but I think we’re a little stronger with Satele at center and Wiz at left guard. Not because Wiz isn’t a better center than Satele, but because Wiz is a better left guard than Heyer or Joe B. by more, if that makes any sense.

its just a stronger lineup overall with Wiz and Satale in there.

by RyanTheRaider on Nov 11, 2011 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

True fully, i wouldn't mind this happening....

even when Satale returns. I think Satale should’ve been playing guard anyway, considering before the injury he was the most athletic of lineman. Using him as a pulling guard, would only open up the running game even more !!! He’s a beast on lb’s and db’s when he on the move !!!

Good post

I agree Michael Bush is a baller and we need to lock him up. Sheppard played well, but he and the whole secondary “interception practice”.

We did a good job filling the gap’s but next we have Adrian Peterson.

John Henderson also played a big part in our win.

We also did a great job on the penalty’s .

But

I will never recover from Al Davis saying, "I should never have fired Art Shell"

"I hate to say I told you so, but...."

I knew I would come here and find an I told you so post Rodney. LOL I was one panicing after Denver. I will say you are right to an extent but I don’t think we are out of the woods yet. The potential is there, no question, to make the playoffs. However it is going to take several games in a row like last nights to convince me. I will feel much more comfortable if we can get to three games over 50%. Not just one. I don’t want to be a stick in the mud but last years team and this years team has not shown they can win and put out a strong defensive effort week in and week out. If Hue can motivate this defense we can make the play offs.

I live, breath and breed Silver and Black!

by sabp on Nov 11, 2011 9:38 AM PST reply actions

I too was...well I'll say worried

rather than panicked, but this win couple with the continued improvement of Carson Palmer and this offense leads me to believe that we will start putting up more points and therefore take some of the pressure off this poor beat up defensive squad…i.e. we could use some blow out wins where the offense dominates time of possession and racks up a lot of points early and the game is decided by halftime.
I believe that this is possible and we could use it next game, if this offense starts hitting on all cylinders there is no limit to the possibilities!
Getting back D-Mac would be a great start and Jacoby’s rapid recovery would help too, but even “as is” this offense has huge possibilities

sabp..Of course, this is only one game, and by no means am I saying more than that....

Its just the Raiders would have beat almost anyone after that Denver game. I look at the Raiders talent, how we lost the games we lost, and the bad taste left in every players mouth after that game. Look, my beloved Raider Nation was pissed after the Raiders gave that game to Denver…However, I wasn’t, I felt that loss would eat at their very core, I am telling you they were chewing nails after that loss, that is why I wrote the previous post. I knew they would come back and play hard. The Raiders are a very talented team, add Carson Palmer to the mix and the sky is the limit really.

When you have a QB of Carson Palmer’s caliber its not hard to motivate your team, the Raiders are going to score points and our Defense knows this, they just have to do their part and we will win. Carson Palmer is the best QB the Raiders have had in a long time, no disrespect to JC, however, I know as most of us football guys that he was not the answer to the Raider QB issues. Palmer gives us legitimate Super Bowl potential, we can get in the mix if our Defense can play efficiently.

The Raiders are going to surprise some of you waiting for a complete meltdown, its not going to happen, not with Carson Palmer leading this team. Stay the course, remain positive, you will be surprised at what the Raiders do the rest of the way….Go Raiders!!!!

To go 10-6

we’ll have to win the rest of our divisional games, beat Miami in their house and win two over the NFC Norse division. I can see us beating Minnesota in that dome and the Bears at home (if we play defense like we did last night and make tackles on Peterson and Forte) , but Green Bay in Lambeau and the Lions here will be real tests. I just don’t see 11-5 unless we really get on a roll.
Hopefully we’ll start get some our injured players back as the season goes on and not add anymore to the injured list in the meantime.
The defense will be the key to all these aspirations, hopefully the offense can start putting up big numbers in the high 30’s and 40’s. That will take some of the pressure off the defense and keep them rested.

"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

Rambis we can beat Green Bay!!!l Yeah I said it...Green Bay is playing ok, however, look at our match ups...

I am telling you guys Carson Palmer is a game changer, now he has an extra 2 days of prep for the next game, he is still on the grind learning that playbook. Every team we play is a threat, hell this is the NFL…But the Raiders are fast, our O line is blocking, our D line is playing like they’ve lost their minds, this is great…lol The Raiders can beat any team in the NFL on any given Sunday, we are not a bad team, we are a good team and next season we will be a great team…So when you look at the schedule the rest of the way, I expect the Raiders to win them all, Why? Because they can if they play well. We are not Miami, or St Louis, with the Raiders talent they should expect to win when they hit the field and Now I believe they will play as if they do. Go Raiders!!!

I think we can win our division, which is enough to get into the playoffs.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Good post

If DMC was there, some of those Bush runs were TD’s. No knock on Bush, he’s a great player to have. However speed is not his name. I love Bush as the back up, but he reminds me of Michael Turner, big, fat, and gets yards. I would really prefer to have DMC back ASAP. This was a huge win and I hope they take the momentum going forward. Lito did a good job last night for only his 2nd regular season game. For once, didn’t feel that CB was an issue. Safeties, ummm, nice pick by Giordano. After that, Mitchell hits hard. Their coverage is average and sometimes they look lost. I fear for our safety out there :P On the whole, a 10-6 record is still achievable. The key will to not play down to opponents the rest of the year. Oh, and no more injuries. May Ford come back soon. Yeesh.

I attribute the meltdowns the D had against KC and Denver was due to not having good qb play.

The D was overplayed and was tired. This was more evident as those games ended. With Palmer finding his groove, the D will have a chance to stay rested and should remain dominant. I don’t know how they might do with GB or the Lions, but I think they will perform well against all of the other teams.

by RaiderPsycho on Nov 11, 2011 8:28 PM PST reply actions

Let's look at

all of these teams as tough. After all, as Rodney says, this is the NFL; putting the likes of a GB up and Minn down is a farce; we psych ourselves out vs quality play. Too often when we compare who we should beat (the flip side manifests as who we are afraid of.) This team needs to get rid of the potentialities and outright start dominating, as ferocious as possible, everyone in front of them. Admittedly, I had one eyebrow go up with the “no need to panic” notion, mainly because detrimentally our swag’ gets ‘tripped-up’ for playing teams perceived as not doing well. Hopefully, the Denver game is the LAST wake-up call to produce greatness; afterall, we had rights to those same motivations after Buffalo, N.E., etc., and to say those two were not considered weak is just my point; they should all be beaten to a pulp, regardless of perception if we are striving to be the best. Great post! Go Raiders!!!!

by Realtooreal on Nov 14, 2011 6:50 AM PST reply actions

That's the attitude! The other aspect is game planning for the particular opponent. Records don't necessarily mean who is tough for us

Matchups for each game, evaluating (objectively) our own and our opponents unique strengths and weaknesses and game planning wisely and, as importantly, making game-time adjustments coupled with that single minded attitude of domination against each opposing player on every single play is the way to go.

Son's that is a great point, however, you know as well as I do that game planning only goes so far...

Its up to the players to beat their man period…Man on Man, the Raiders have to go out and straight up hit teams in the mouth…Tackle hard, get to the QB and play hard every play period. We are not a good enough team to take plays off, to win the Raiders have to play their best all game. There was a time when the Raiders would play terribly and still win, those days are over. With our speed, the addition of Carson Palmer I expect the Raiders to become one of the NFL’s elite teams again. Carson was worth a first round pick, hell the Raiders screw up their first rounders on draft day any way, at least he is proven.. I expect to make the playoffs and win there, this is going to be interesting if our players go out and play with heart…Go Raiders…

The concept of winning has to go beyond what's on the scoreboard. Players have to live up their own unique standard

regardless of the scoreboard.
