Right now we are a team without an identity. I always felt like this was something that could happen after the death of Mr. Davis, but I did not anticipate it coming to fruition. Coming into this year we had a run first, run last and run in between identity. Now we have different parts that we have added, and although the chemistry is already blossoming, we have lost that identity. I know its not the same with DMC out, but should it really have changed so drastically? Since it has been so different should we continue this evolution, or do we need to get back to what was developing so well in the first place?
We threw the ball 35 times, while running the ball 26 times. However, it was even more slanted towards passing than that, since 5 of those 26 runs were Carson and he got sacked twice. I don't know how many different run plays were called, but it seemed like the same ones over and over again. Michael Bush is not Darren McFadden, but he did have 19 runs for 96 yards. That is just a shade over 5 yards per carry.
They stopped being effective running because it seemed like we became far too predictable. I do not think that means we should have gone so far away from it though. Taiwan Jones was suppose to be our change of pace back but he only had 2 carries. Just 2 carries! That is no way to keep their run defense off balance. They got the speed of Bush down and were tackling him around the line of scrimmage, so why not use the speed of Jones to keep them off guard. Only having 2 carries is not enough to let any NFL running back get into a rhythm, let alone a rookie.
The addition of Carson Palmer has thrown our whole scheme out the window. We haven't seen what will happen when we put McFadden back into the mix, but I don't know if Hue is going to go back to a run first mentality. I am not saying that it would be wrong to move to a passing orientated offense right now, although I myself would prefer to remain a run orientated offense. I do understand that we now have a quarterback and receivers that would allow us to transition into a pass first team and succeed. I do feel its better for us to be a run first team later in the season. Carson throwing for 332 yards with 3 touchdowns and completing passes to 8 different receivers proves that there is potential if we do want to go that route.
If we decide to move towards being a pass first team then so be it. But, I want the decision to be made. Right now I feel like we are being far too inconsistent to breed success. We need to get an identity now before its too late, and build on it. It is too far into the season to continue being so indecisive. We need to decide and move forward. If we continue being unsure of ourselves we are not going to get better this year, and I still have faith in this team being able to win NOW. I don't want to pack it in and wait for next season, but anymore performances like the last two and I might not have a choice.
