Raiders vs. Chargers: Injury Situation Paints Grim Picture

Unless the Raiders get healthy fast it is hard to see them putting together a solid effort. 11 players missed Tuesday's practice. And almost all of them are starters.

What worries me the most about the injuries is that Khalif Barnes and Samson Satele both missed practice. If neither guy is able to go it is going to put some severe strain on the offensive line. My guess would be that Joe Barksdale played at left guard and Stephon Heyer at right tackle.

Bruce Campbell has never played left guard, and he seem to be buried on the depth chart. Barksdale has been filling in at left guard, and this lineup would give the Raiders at least a little sense of cohesion.

It is also a line that probably won't be blocking for Darren McFadden. He is still on crutches.

As for the other injuries. Richard Seymour, Chris Johnson, Chimdi Chekwa, Michael Huff, Sebastian Janikowski, DVD, Chinedum Ndukwe (how the hell do the Raiders have a players named Chimdi and Chinedum?) Mike Mitchell and Jason Campbell. Ugh.....

Keeping our guys on the field has certainly become a major problem this season

Even guys that are playing are struggling to practice which is in many ways just as big a problem.

All the teams had the same amount of pre season

so it should be even among all teams, but of course it seems to be worse for us.

Samson Satele: “I am mad. The team is mad. We got our butts whipped last two games … but it should come out fine if we win this next one.”

exactly!!

instead of “it should come out fine if we win this next one” i’d like to be hearing “but we’ll make sure it won’t happen again and the chargers better be careful ‘cause we’re making them pay for those last two games” or something a bit more convincing than “it should be fine”

I am having a hard time deciding what's the major injury on the list

Is it McFadden? Is it Campbell? Seymour, Seabass , or is it any combination of the six defensive backs that are injured? This season is slipping away due to injuries…..

Hands down, it has to be McClain. Since he was practicing, that is a great sign.

Many of those have had lingering injuries, but have been available come game day.

If Hue was just being cautious with DMC, then I’m ok with him playing without practice, but if he needs more time, then we need to give it. Bush and Taiwan can get the job done, and our D with McClain is more than capable.

Injuries

are part of the game. most of the injuries aren’t that bad and i expect most of these players to contribute later this season. unless they are on the injured reserve; they will have to wait till next year to tear shit up

The way the injury list looks right now...we may have to play Pryor at DB

"THE TIME TO WIN IS NOW" - Coach Hue Jackson

Raider Nation, all hand's on deck or get the hell off the ship! That's the way it's gonna be around here from now on! If a 7th & 5th round pick gets you Aaron Curry (a former 4th overall 1st rd. pick) instead of a couple of crap-shoots a year later, then fine and if dealing away a couple of first rounder's gets you a proven franchise quarterback like Carson Palmer and a legitimate shot at the playoffs, then great, you know why? Because your team is standing behind it's motto & legacy, "Just Win Baby!" and "Commitment to Excellence" instead of "Suck for Luck" and "Give Up". Imagine if you were a fan of a team that actually bought into that!?!

Wow, even Ndukwe is hurt?

How the hell did he get hurt? I don’t remember seeing the guy even out there but a few plays so far.

Looks like we’re going to get to see what, if anything Sheppard has left in the tank. Who else do we have left to play opposite Stan if everyone on that list can’t go?

I hate to say it fellas, but … it doesn’t look good for tomorrow night. With our backfield in this kind of shape, I have a feeling we’ll end up seeing Phyllis’ ‘return to form’ game this week, and probably end up in the Chargers rear-view the rest of the season. Kinda traditional for them to stage a 2nd half run (although last year’s didn’t quite work out), and torching this beat-up division rival would appear to be a perfect opportunity to springboard themselves.

If the Raiders aren’t badly injured, we can take the Chargers, but … let’s face it … if many of these guys can’t go, you have to say that this team is decimated at this point. The bye barely helped us get healthy at all …

This is one depressing list …

ARGH! How is DMC

Still on crutches? His injury occurred weeks ago, and they said at the time there was no structural damage! I think they lied and it was some sort of minor avulsion fracture and didn’t want anyone getting too worried. Still, ARGH!

by jtkerr79 on Nov 9, 2011 7:23 AM PST reply actions

The fact is we don't know what his injury is

they say foot- it could be plantar fasciitis which takes along time to heal. or it could be the dreaded high ankle sprain which also takes a very long time to heal.
Since the Raiders will not say we don’t know for sure, but every week he is out makes one of those two dreaded injuries more likely. The Raiders won’t say because they want other teams to worry about McFadden until the last minute. At least it’s not turf toe…I think?

"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

I believe originally they tabbed it as a mid-ankle sprain

When it comes to McFadden’s feet though…I’m sure they’ll be overly cautious.

sure,

plus I’m not saying that NFL teams lie when they talk about player injuries, but they certainly talk around the issue and are intentionally vague especially about high profile players makers like McFadden.

I know, even after the injury McFadden was standing watching the game from the sidelines

it’s not like he was carted off or anything. Because he was standing up, it seemed like the injury wasn’t bad at all.

The one positive I see ...

Is that DeathRo isn’t on the list. I guess being rested the Denver game got him back in the line-up.

by Brett J Valjalo on Nov 9, 2011 7:33 AM PST reply actions

Oh, and then there's the list of Chargers are likely to be missing ...

Defensive lineman Luis Castillo (leg), guard Kris Dielman (concussion), receiver Malcom Floyd (hip) and linebacker Shaun Phillips (foot) did not practice on Tuesday, and none of them are expected to play on a short week this week.

And Ryan Mathews is a gametime decision w/a groin so it’s rather likely he’ll not be at full speed if he’s even there.

So at least this evens it up a bit, and we won’t have to deal w/both Floyd and VJ with the broke-down secondary it’s looking like we’ll be fielding.

I seem to recall...

I seem to recall a similar scenario last season that people seem to be forgetting. We’d lost two straight and managed to beat San Diego without McFadden. Obviously there are much different circumstances as well but it’s I don’t think anyone expected us to beat San Diego last year either, if this team makes the most of the talent that is available and plays smarter than we’ve seen recently, I feel they can again upset SD even if Phillip Rivers is sharp.

by AwesomeTy on Nov 9, 2011 9:12 AM PST reply actions

I was so sure we'd lose that game ...

I was even tempted to bet on the friggin Dolts … just to cushion my pain when we lost.

I did up a huge post on S&BP, documenting our woes over the prior 7 years attempting to play in San Diego. The litany of terrible stats that this team had accumulated prior to last seasons ‘W’ down there was really quite staggering.

Let’s hope we turned a corner with that particular win, and don’t go back to playing like we had been for the prior 7 years in our matchups at QualComm … which was, to put it mildly, like complete shit.

The absence of LT and Sproles, and the slowing down of Gates, are the primary reasons for optimism that what once seemed an inevitable outcome in this particular yearly contest … is now anything but.

Still, although I hate to admit it … if I was putting my ducats down straight up, I’d have to pick the Dolts tonight. We are just so banged up right now it’s ridiculous. I see it as likely that Rivers will simply look for whomever Sheppard is covering, and proceed to TORCH him repeatedly. Guy really hasn’t played all year, after all, and was, by all accounts, rapidly fading in skills … I don’t hold out a lot of hope that he can hang w/the likes of VJ in his first start after all this time.

Emory Hunt (at Football Gameplan) picked us to win the game tomorrow. I’m assuming its because the Chargers do not have a more mobile offense than the Broncos.

However, I have a feeling the Chargers will play tough against us no matter what.

Bring on that Kool Aid, the strong stuff

Because we might have a bunch of guys on crutches limping around the field.

“Coach Hue Jackson said in his post-practice news conference that running back Darren McFadden and cornerbacks Chris Johnson and DeMarcus Van Dyke won’t play Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers.”

and

“Safety Michael Huff said he is at about 31 percent health, which means he intends to play, he said, because he goes as long as he is at 30 percent.
Eight players are questionable, including Huff, Chekwa, safety Mike Mitchell, defensive tackle Richard Seymour, middle linebacker Rolando McClain, kicker Sebastian Janikowski and offensive linemen Khalif Barnes and Samson Satele.
Most of those guys are expected to play, Jackson said.”

Which ones will and which ones won’t? Will the ones that do be playing at anything like full strength??

44-7, Raiders. You heard it here first.

If I was going to predict such a lop-sided score like that for tonight’s game … it would not be suffixed w/the word ‘Raiders’, I hate to say …

I am, most depressingly and unfortunately, expecting something more along the lines of 38-17, Dolts, with Phyllis sitting at 22-30, 390 yards, 4tds, 1int.

And before you get on my case, remember that last week, for the FIRST TIME all year, I predicted the Raiders to win handily … in fact, I think I even said we’d ‘whup their donkey asses’.

So … you won’t see me making THAT mistake again this season ;)

I'm trying to hold out hope.

But it’s pretty hard after Sunday’s performance and this huge list of injuries. I sure as hell won’t be predicting a blow out by the Raiders. That’s just crazy. Our defense is a joke. Giving up an average of 27 points a game. Only 2 teams have given up more points than ours, the Broncos and the Colts. That’s how bad we are right now. If we win, it’ll be because our offense manages to score a crapload. The thought of our defense giving up less than 20 at this point is unfathomable to me.

Never a good sign when you have to start Lito Sheppard

Luckily Floyd is out but I don’t see how we stop Rivers with the ineffective pass rush we have shown this year and we are decimated in secondary. This is all on top of our inability to stop the run and Matthews is a go tonight. If we can’t stop an over-the-hill McGahee and we make Tebow look like an all-pro…this defense is on the brink of being the equivalent of swiss cheese.

30th points per game allowed
27th yards per game allowed
20th yards per game against the pass
29th yards per game against the run
28th average yards per carry
20th total sacks

These are very alarming and I know that we have shown flashes with this defense but between injuries and the lack of any real pass rush this season…this is the area that needs to be turned around in a hurry if we have any hope this season.

"DT"s are older and slowed by the nicks….

"DE"s suffer as noted…

Than comes the “O”…

“C” is an issue…

Deep at “RB” but #1 is a no go…

“QB” out for the count and the newbie is getting prepped quickly…

"TE"s slowed by Boss injury early on…

"WR"s suffered threw the Murry/Chaz/Ford losses and now trying to get them adjusted to playing…

Not many position unaffected?…Did I miss something?

Wow

Just read the injury list, its horrible. Our team is beat up pretty bad. They are a shell of the team we all thought we would see by this time. Tonight, I just want the guys to fight hard and to the end. Play smart football, limit penalities, limit coverage mistakes, blitz when appropriate, get the points we can, and come away from this battle healthy. I hope they rush Bush hard and change the pace with TJ along with endarounds to Ford and Moore. Get DHB the ball and let him make plays, likewise with Ford. Deep passes should be saved for Moore, Ford, Reese, and perhaps TJH. Slot passes should stick to TJH, Chaz, and definitely Boss. Screens can still go to Bush, but they have looked like shit the last two games. CP is getting better, his throws are getting crisper, just needs to understand his WR’s and their timing a bit better. As for the D, I have no idea what team will show up. If they are angry, I hope it shows. Seymour needs to play smarter, Routt needs to shadow Jackson, forget the I’m going to cover one side bullshit, Routt on Jackson 90% of the game needs to happen, Blackstock is not a good leader, I hope Curry steps up more so Blackstock can just play. Giordano needs to learn how to read the WR’s better and stop whiffing on his tackles. Lets see what these guys can do when they are mad. In a blowout in favor of the Raiders, I’m ok with a roughing the passer penalty :) Go Raiders!!!

I'm hoping Blacksock stays on the sideline and McClain will play

anybody know if McClain has been ruled out?

I think Rolando will start

I just hope he doesn’t tweak anything on a whiff tackle. Blackstock has not showed himself to be a viable back up option at the Mike. Was hoping Lofa was gonna be signed for depth/experience but he must have been really banged up to not warrant a contract.

or he didn't run a fast enough 40

30% vs 31%

I think I read Huffy saying something like he’ll give it a go if he’s better than 30%? I don’t like that at all. How bout you just sit out, get better and not be a liability out there. In the Bronco, game he played like he was really hurt and his responsibility was Decker? Terrible results. If he plays tonite, I’m sure he’ll have to cover Gates and we all know how much Gates loves running routes in Raider secondarys. If you can give it a go Mike, just have a seat next to JC on the bench. Next man up.

Mitchell will see the majority of Gates tonight

I read from RNS that we reached an inj. settlement with Ndukwe and he's gone

under the circumstances, this sucks. Boyd got lit up like Christmas frequently.

Really?

What a waste of money. He played 1 game.

my thoughts exactly

I was excited for his addition. Anyone over Boyd pretty much, but Chinedum looked to fit our needs especially well.
