The Truth about the Raiders defense
Lets reveal the truth about the Raiders. I am a life long raider fan and after awhile the truth comes to light and hurts. Here are a few things that drive me crazy about our defense (I will address the offense in another comment). The biggest, there is no heart and determination, especially on defense. How long are these guys going to allow teams to push them around, step on them, spit in in their face before they decide take some action. They don't seemed pumped up for the games. Our defense is very slow. Especially the d-line. Seymour is done. He looked like he was in slow motion the last few weeks. Tommy Kelly, gives 100% about 40% of the time, that's why he jumps offside's all the time, his mind is not fully into the game. I like Wimbley, however, we have him out of position. Let him just rush the passer, he can't cover anyone in pass def., same goes for curry, he was a beast in college rushing the passer and and roaming around. He did the same at seattle for a short time until they tried to make him something he is not. he can't cover in pass def either. switch to a 3-4, have curry and Wimbley on the ends to cause problems. McClain, someone needs to fire him up or slap him in the face to wake him up, for some reason he looks slow and for as big as his is, he shouldn't be pushed around like a little kid, go hit someone 55. Bryant on the d-line is too small, he gets pushed all around, sometimes makes a play, but we aren't looking for sometimes. Lamar Houston i thought would turn out nice, but is overrated and gets pushed all around, plus he is too slow and commits too many mental mistakes, why did he commit that clip on that so called fumble the other day, are u kidding. We need a d-line that is hungry, have speed and heart and want to get after someone. Look at the other good defenses in the league, their d-line's don't get pushed around, and most have speed to rush the passer and plug the holes. Stanford Rout, overrated, when is he going to turn and look for the ball when covering a receiver. I learned that in pony league football. Michael Huff, i liked him out of college, again too slow and inconsistent with covering people. I dislike the 49ers, but i tell you what, their linebackers fly all over the place and hit people. Can we say that about our linebackers? NO. The only person that fly's around our def. is branch. For a safety he makes way too many tackles. That means are linebackers are getting their butts kick at the line of scrim. Lastly about our def. is there is no accountability. It's ok to make a mistake at times, but game after game, the same people committing the same stupid mistakes. this has to change. Either get rid of them and/or change the de-coord. At the end of the day, we do not have the talent on defense right now to become a solid defense.

I love the idea of switching to 3-4
Put Wimbley and Curry on the ends and let them kill the QB, love that. Then put Mike Mitchell in at FS, Huff should be benched and either way he is injured, he needs to compete for the job he has lost, the only way our D is decent this year is heart…which I dont see right now but it could change, after the season we should make a mess on the defensive side of the ball….get Cortland Finnegan, trade someone for a LB and grab a DT out of the draft in whatever round that we have a pick, hire Del Rio and then we have a team
I’ve really liked Curry ever since we got him, but we need to keep him in a position where he doesn’t have to try and cover anyone, because frankly he can’t. What he can do is make tons of plays close to/behind the line of scrimmage!
Exactly. He's great in traffic, cuts through debris and zeros in. Put him in space and bad things happen. Our players are not
being put into positions that best suit them – what a waste. Houston would do better inside. Kelly does well till he tires so he needs frequent spells. Seymour is slowing down and we may have to part with him, especially now that his leadership has faded for some reason – probably demoralized by having McClain as a back-up and a joke for a DC.

If we do 3-4 this will be the lineup:
Standard DBs.
Front 7:
LBs (left to right)- Scott, Curry, McClain, Matt Shaugnessy. Wimbley on passing downs and sub packages. Really would like to see more Trevor Scott.
DL (left to right)- Seymour, Kelly, Houston. Wimbley can be a DE in 4-3 packages.
We need a better DL to go to a 3-4.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP
Curry is too undersized to play DE in a 3-4.
I look for guys around 6’4" and close to around 290 LBs.

Shaugnessy could play LB or any other front 7 position. When he was in the Raiders were invulnerable on his side - led the league
in fewest yards aloud rushing over his turf. Houston might be better inside, our left side (with Shaughnessy on the right) gave up far more yards/rush (most teams run to the right more,so the stat that mattes is yards/rush). Seymour is expensive and clearly in decline, moreover, his leadership powers (for whatever reason) have diminished.

Defensive issuuuues!
I think you addressed most of them well. But we also have to realize each play has a different plan. On the first touchdown, McClain had the A and B gap. If McClain commits to the outside then he’s out of position and there is the cutback. That probably means that the guy flying buy missing completely, Huff, was the guy responsible for the outside run on that side. At the end of the play you can see McClain whip his head around looking in Huff’s direction. I can’t be sure since on replay you can’t see where Huff started,
If the Raiders want their linebackers to fly around and get into the backfield, then the defensive line has to occupy multiple blockers even on run plays, which usually doesn’t happen except every once in a while when Henderson is in there.
Personally, I think Wimbley is great when the Raiders are ahead and the opponent needs to pass. But Wimbley is a bit small to set the edge on runs as a DE.
The Raiders need a couple beasty tackles, then they can do whatever they want.
As bad as McClain seems to play, I disagree with Rick Tittle’s and Townsend’s criticism. The problem is on the middle runs is that the DTs can’t get off blocks. If McClain is covering a tight end and he looks into the backfield at a run coming right at him, that’s two or three steps before the back gets the ball, which could be a fake, in the mean time the TE McClain is supposed to be covering is flying down the field open. In that case, I guarantee you the A and B gap are the responsibilities of the DTs not McClain.
If these guys are really done, then they won’t win the next three. If they were saving themselves for these three games then we’ll see if they have anything left.
All in all, them means next year. I know i’ll be there.

It’s an excuse because it doesn’t seem to effect veteran teams, but road games late in the year especially in the Eastern or Central timezone can be really tough to get adjusted to, going West to East is hard, East to West is easy, it really takes me like 3 days to get acclamated when I go East so even though playing at 1 PM PST just harder to get it going energy wise. Not sure exactly why some teams can get over it so quickly while younger teams have such a hard time. In Miami it seems like the defense just got ground down in the 1st half. In the Green Bay game, it almost seemed like the opposite like they never really even got a good sweat on, they just gave the receivers way too much room to run and with Rodgers so much of his offense is predicated on timing and precise route running, I think the Raiders just never got into it. I’d like to have seen a lot more press coverage, even if it resulted in illegal contact or pass interference against a team like that you just want to make them grind out the victory, make them earn it. The offense needs to be patient and not press, the turnovers were killer last week ruined any shot at being in the ballgame. I think some points early on by the defense would help the defense as the game progresses. I think we will see a much better effort this week. Detroit seems to be capable of putting 30 pts up on just about everybody. The Raiders confidence seems low so I really think they need to get a score early and get a couple early stops on D.
