Oakland Riaders vs Chiefs: Breaking Down The O-Line Film

Oakland-raiders-helmet_medium

Week 16

The Oakland Raiders beat the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime at Arrowhead stadium, 16-13. The Raiders move to 8-7 on the season and need a win and a Bronco loss to win the division.

via profootballspotlight.com

After watching the game, a couple of things were noticed: Stephon Heyer had a lot more reps at right tackle/extra lineman, Khalif Barnes had a few more reps on the bench and did a lot of playing along side Heyer, and Manase Tango had more reps at fullback.

Tango Tongadidn't have that good of a game. If you would like to see the tight ends and backs grades, then go here.

Cooper Carlisle ends his day with a 78% and +2 run assignment grade, and a 93% and -1 pass assignment grade. The run blocking for the Raiders was not as good against the Chiefs as it has been this year. Most lineman for Oakland scored in the 70% range. When the entire team does that...that's a down day.

Let's take a look at the rest of those scores...

Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score.
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league.
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender.
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score.

Run Blocking Notes:

  • Both Khalif Barnes and Cooper Carlisle had problems blocking Tyson Jackson for the Chiefs.
  • At 2:54 in the 1st quarter, Samson Satele is driven back, Cooper Carlisle engages and looses the block, Jared Veldeer misses his 2nd level block, and Kevin Boss misses his block. Needles to say, when that many things go wrong...the Raiders don't get any yards.

  • At 7:32 in the 2nd quarter, Steve Wisniewski and Jared Veldeer have a nice run double that gets some movement.
  • Wisniewski gets a nice 2nd level block in the pick, below. And the Raider rumble for a chunk of yardage. Wisniewski has been coming on the last couple of weeks.

  • The Raiders were having some problems with Tyson Jackson on Sunday. In the pic, below...you can see Stephon Stefan Heyer just about to get thrown by Jackson, and Samson Satele loosing control of his block on the play.

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block. How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades.
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade...but how much help did either of them get?

      Pass Blocking Notes:

      • The Raiders pass protection was acceptable. Veldeer had problems with Hali at times...but the interior of the line was solid.
      • At 13:26 in the 1st quarter, Stephon Stefan Heyer is in at right tackle and misses a pass block. Heyer gets a lot more pass blocking reps this week...something I haven't seem much of this year. Overall, he does a good job. However, many times Khalif Barnes is on the line outside of him.
      • In the pic, below...you can see Cooper Carlisle picking up a loop stunt. It is nice to see the Raiders picking up stunts.

        • Copper Carlisle misses a loop stunt in at :40 in the 4th quarter, however. You can see the pic, below. The defender is just looping around and going to make his way to the quarterback.

        Either way

The ball being thrown to Toga short of the sticks on the biggest play of the game was fucking ridiculous.

        Totally agree ...

I was saying that earlier in the week.

Hell, Tonga being in teh game at all on that drive didn’t make any sense, let alone dumping it off to him short of the sticks on a HUGE 3rd down like that.

In fact, Reece overall was curiously absent in the 2nd half, in fact I wondered if he was nicked cause every time I paid attention, I noticed it was Tonga out there instead.

On a side note, given that the Dolts are 31st at defending against TE’s this season, I very much expect to see Boss as a big part of this weeks gameplan. It will be a mistake on Hue’s part if he is not. I know he dropped a couple in the GB game he should’ve caught, and I think that’s why Hue called so little his way against the Chiefs, but this week … it would be a big mistake to not try to frequently get him (or Myers) involved in the passing game.

Again, a great breakdown for us to peruse.

        Thanks and happy new year.
