Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

The Raiders, once again, Remind us they are still the Raiders

This season has been exciting, dramatic, up, down, ugly, pretty, etc. etc., but unfortunately, today, it ended.

Say what you will about the "well if we win out" or "if they lose and we win atleast..." this season, for me atleast, is over. To fight over table scaps and sneak into the playoffs through the back door to get blown out in the first round is not a victory, or a return legitimacy, but would rather be a testament to how horrible the AFC west is, similarily to the Seahawks last year. We will most likely lose 2 more in a row, a blow from which we will not recover. The Tebow story will continue to surprise us, I am officially no longer hating on the young man. 6-1 no more arguing that. He's good, he will continue to improve and most likely haunt us for years to come, all the haters get over it. It's not a fluke, its the real deal, Tebow is here to stay. Elway and the donkeys will likely make it a long term fit over the offseason.

Richard Seymour will be suspended for 2 games. I would be hugely surprised if he wasn't. So close to the Suh incident, the league will act on the Suh precidence. I'd have to agree with them too. For a superbowl & pro bowler to act like that is inexcusable.

You cant consistently win games without depth. Injuries is the name of the game. Other teams can cover the gaps, we simply can't. It doesn't help that we already mortgaged our future on Palmer either, so the future doesn't look very bright either, we'll be looking (as usual) for FA gems, older vets with juice still in the tank, and unfortunately we may end up trading some of our current talent just to get some early draft picks, another unfortunate turn of events, etc, etc.

we do have game changing talent, but with them all out, we have very little to lean on. Bush has been playing very well, but you cant demand that much from a back and not expect him to hit a wall eventually, I'm thankful he hasn't been injured.Carson has been effective, and even exciting at times, but today reminded us of his limitations. Moore out, Ford out, Mcfadden out (done for season?), along with the carosel of injuries on the defensive side of the ball.

This team has been through alot and will HOPEFULLY mature for 2012. Als death, campbells season ending injury, the extended loss of Darren McFadden, The Carson Palmer Deal, The "bengal" frenzy that ensued afterward, now the late season losses of ford & moore, Mcclains still "alleged" incident, and now this demoralizing, embarrassing, disgusting loss to the Miami Dolphins. This team is not ready for the playoffs, this team is not ready to dominate, for the time it seems, the only thing they are consistently ready to do is choke when it counts. Lose games they should win, win games they should lose, ad nasuem.

Unless we have a dramatic turnaround in the injury deptartment (which will probly be offset by this weeks injury list) and play like we did against SD for every remaining game, we go 2-2 on the remainder of the season finishing at 9-7, the Broncos will likely match or surpass us in either case they win the division and not us, as today was an AFC loss we can no longer get back.

I am drained, pissed off, sick, I may not even eat tonight. As much as I want to hold onto hope, I cannot, Green Bay may score 100 points on us next week. this is fucking awful.

Wow lol

I think we have covered our injuries pretty well but the problem is our depth is injured as well!

I just want to make the playoffs after this long so not super fussed how we do it just making it is a step in the right direction and there us a difference between the Seahawks going in under 500 and us making it with a winning record.

well we scored 14 in the 4th quarter at least…

Tool....

I’m feeling you on this one. The worst possible loss at worst possible time.
We been here before….you dont root for the Raiders because you believe shit is simple or without a little craziness.
We lost 4 straight and ended up going to the SB. Tebow is just another competitor….we used to bring Elway to his knees….things will repeat themselves. You’re right that we have an injury depleted team and some stupid behaviors by so called leaders.
The beer I’m drinking tonite tastes like shit everytime I think of the game. By Tuesday this beer will be pretty good as I look forward to the next game. Take a day off and just chill…..it’s all we can do, brah….

Elway was just a great QB.

At this stage, I’m about ready to believe in Tebow’s magical God-powers. What other logical explaination is there?

"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in s*** and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.

I wont go into that magical stuff but I think he certainly has an uncanny ability to morivate his team mates.

After a military career before my present incarnation, I met guys who could instill that stuff in people; make them reach down and find something inside to keep going. He can do it. I hope CP can make that mojo happen for the GB game. I about shit myself watching Eli take the Gmen all the way to the endzone, a 2 pt conversion to tie and 58 seconds left. Then Rodgers made 2 plays to bring them into FG range to win.
Who do we have that can cover Jordy Nelson????

So has everyone given up yet...lol Hey with all the injuries we don't have the luxury of not making plays...

The Raiders just have to execute, that’s it. Every team we play is a professional football team so don’t look at the record and think it’s a easy win. The Raiders will be fine, I can’t see a complete meltdown on the horizon. However, I will state missing so many key players at full strength doesn’t help. With that said, look for the Raiders to play better next week. I do expect to make the playoffs…And Carson will definitely play better, by the way, I would like to see the Coach’s call the game a little better on both sides of the ball. We are 7-5 and I never expected to run the schedule, I expect the Raiders to win 3 more games and end up 10-6 with us in the playoffs..

I hope so, but that would be hoping we can beat GB or DET

which I don’t think we can.

1. GB- even if we matchup well (supposedly), Aaron Rodgers will destroy our secondary in a gunslinger match, they will simply score faster and more often than we will be able to. Key to beating green bay is being the last one the score in a shootout. The Saints almost did it, so did tampa bay, but we likely wont be healthly enough or ballsy enough to keep up the scoring. I expect the beginning of this game to give us some hope, we might even go to half tied or leading by 7 or something like that, but in the second half it will look like LSU Georgia SEC championship game.

2. DET- Again, gunslinger match we probley cant keep up with. The only ouside chance of us leaving with a win here is if stafford decides to (which he has in the past) throw to the silver and black instead of the silver and blue. I forsee Carson on his back alot too. As much as I’d like to try and beleive that we are just as good as other elite teams, we’re not (and this includes the entire AFC West for that matter). Think back to DEN vs. DET a few weeks ago and really think about it.

I pray we can end the season with two division wins, even if it ends up not meaning much, and if by some wild chance that jesus decides to stop rooting for tebow, and we win the division at 9-7, it will still make me sick to go 1 and done in the playoffs. this has just been a nightmare season too much ficking drama not enough football, raiders in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

by Toolshed1485 on Dec 4, 2011 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

I have to agree. We continue to take every opportunity we have to join the elite and instead show we are susceptible to beating ourselves

and the things we need to fix are too myriad to think we can really compete. Denver showed today it can represent our shitty division better than us.

Any identity we had before of a team that could win with merely a solid performance from a qb that protects the ball is already gone, instead we’re now a team that needs Carson to perform at a high level at all times. We let our O line get dominated today, and our D line got pretty humiliated too.

I just see all too often, even in the wins but especially in the losses, that we’re not good enough to beat the elite teams of the league. We haven’t even shown we can seize a rock solid opportunity to join the elite when it’s practically gift wrapped for us.

I mean seriously, from a business standpoint, to make an example of suh and then, “oh he just swung on him? If the league is smart, and I hope they are, they will suspend Seymour and any and all other players who throw punches, kick, knee, elbow, etc. etc.

unbecoming? Because I want our players to play smart clean football

because I want us to win?
because I fucking tired of making excuses for undisciplined players?
because I’m fucking tired of losing to the same damn team every time, the fucking raiders!
because I’m tired of seeing these guys roll over when things get tough, instead of fighting through and making a play when I counts, and not when it doesn’t?

I’ve been a fan of this team for 20years! Even though I was little, I can remember when Hostetler was the man! I’ve watched bo jackson (again I was little) play! I can remember going to KC Royals games decked out in raider gear screaming for BO! I’ve seen this team dominate, be feared, execute, WIN! And you spit on the ground because I think that there is no room for throwing punches in the NFL? Its about football, not boxing, its about defeating the guy across from you mentally and physically, mentally being the most important. Sure Seymours “punches” were a little “borderline” But I count 2, not 1, but 2 jabs to a guys helmet with afist. borderline or not, it s bonehead play, immature, unprfoessional. I’d rather have a W than have Seymour ejected, I’d rather have him use that intensity to get to the fucking quarterback and disrupt a play, than to punch someone. I spit on the ground as well. WTF?

Great Rant Toolshed

I agree with you on all points. I would also like to add that the combination of Al’s death with Hue taking advantage of the power vacuum (still no true GM) does not bode well. There are plenty of things that Hue does well. He is a good motivator, has his player’s trust and back but I question his offensive play calling. He’s been too predictable. Additionally, his hire of Chuck Bresnahan was a joke as pretty much all Raider fans know by know.
Finally, and let’s admit this, the Raiders have been trying to “build a bully” but it’s clear that the Oline is nowhere close to being able to push teams around. Bush has been an adequate replacement, but his lack of a burst and the Oline’s inability to create a push up the middle and Hue’s non creative and highly predictable play calling is equates to far too many 3 and outs. The lack of someone who can hit the edges (DMC) and injuries at WR don’t bode well for offensive production.

Chalking up next week as a loss, means the Raiders will have to win the last 3 to possibly make the playoffs. Even then, no guarantees.

by Da Raider on Dec 4, 2011 6:10 PM PST reply actions

yeah its a bleak and depressing outlook right now

I don’t know it seems like Hue draws them up perfect (offensively) for a few weeks in a row, and then goes all retarded. Today’s entire 1st half offense was weakly called, I mean no gadget plays, fakes, etc. etc, while we can’t lean on that shit all the time, today might have been a nice day to throw some in for a spark. I can only hope that he returns to ballsy and balanced playcalling next week. Even if you look at last week’s win against the Bears, while we didn’t score alot of touchdowns, we did move down the field fairly easily and with a balance attack. Carson can’t be throwing 40+ times every game, he’s not so young anymore.

Hue and Carson seemed deranged and, being the leaders, that sucked all the confidence and camaraderie from the team

Obviously a few bad passes

But Palmer really was threading the needle out there today while running for his life. I hadn’t realize Schilens had 6 catches for the day, but I’m starting to agree with you on Murphy. Maybe he needs a change of scenery.

Watching several interviews of Palmer during the week I noticed he was "off" something in his eyes and a general

lack of confidence. My concerns were realized in the first quarter. Hue was also out of sorts in the last press conference and I know how the team has begun to reflect Hue – good or bad.

It is weird. I dont understand it. and as much shit as I've been

given this year about making assumptions based on how the “player seems” in their interview. I picked up on the same thing. I think even the raiders knew they weren’t gonna win this one. I wonder how they’ll look this week. I think last week’f offensive inability to score in the redzone got in both of their heads. two things keep running through my mind that hue has said on a couple of occasions this year.

1. “Coach Jackson Lost the Game”
2. “Think players, not plays” <——I really feel as if hue’s head gets a little inflated and he starts to feel like he can just “outcall” the opponent and win the game. I want him to return to the approach of earlier, when he was a little greener earlier this year. Remember when he said he approached Darren McFadden and asked him what plays he likes to run? Do you think hue is having those types of conversations anymore?

by Toolshed1485 on Dec 4, 2011 6:41 PM PST reply actions

Wouldn't make much difference with what we're putting on the field now. Boss's dropped passes, Murphy gives up.

and Bush, if not worn out, is keyed on now that he’s our main guy. Reece was misused – where are all those creative plays in Saunders “legendary” (what a joke) playbook? Hue looked like he was on the verge of tears in the post game. He has some serious soul-searching and reflection ahead but I believe in Hue and expect him to bounce back.

I don''t believe in Hue Jackson at all...

(1) Not kicking the field goal in the Cleveland game was the right real sign that Mumbles was not ready for prime time.

(2) Not calling time-out with 2:30 and 3 timeouts in the first half, trailing 13-0… proves Mumbles cannot chew gum and call plays at the same time.

(3) And all of the incomprehensible play calling in between… Mumbles is an arrogant, narcissistic fool, much along the same lines as that other “head coach” currently occupying the campaign bus… err White House.

Run run… pass punt… sit on leads, throw leads away, get your QB killed on third and long, misuse players, who thinks he’s more important than the team.

Pure arrogance… just like Pillow… too convinced of his own righteousness to even consider making game plan adjustments… much less half time adjustments.

I am sick of all the phonies trotting through this organization because AL created such a toxic atmosphere no self-respecting quality coach would even consider taking the HC job for this team.

his problem is that when he starts putting on all the other “hats” he tries to wear i.e. GM, team lawyer, OC, team scout, not to mention practically writing checks (carson) , he loses his focus on what he’s good at, it trickles down the organization, and POOF we lay a rotten egg.

not enough time left to “be cautious” with the injured players, if these guys are gonna play hurt on sundays, then they need to damn practice hurt during the week. just because were getting huff back on sunday doesnt mean shit if all he did was jog a couple times durin the week. Another tough loss

That’s all it is. If we all were not drinking the kool aid we may have expected this. The Ro situation was a given distraction, no matter if you were for or against him playing today. Curry isn’t a good pass defender. Our receiving corps are decimated. We all know that Chaz and DHB are not #1 receivers, just good possession receivers. There lack of separation today should not have been surprising at all. They had not done it all year, today was no different. Tawain Jones was out, meaning we had no change of back guy. DMC was gone, meaning the threat of an outside game was gone too. Bush had no chance today. Love the dude, just he is not fast. Palmer did a good job of threading the needle and working with what he had. Boss, at least he blocks well. Our O LIne was a disappointment today, that was the only real surprise. Our D, what was shocking? Seymour committed yet another stupid personal foul. By now, we should expect that from him every other game. It is getting old. Our secondary sucks. Routt is good, despite his one PI penalty. That is it. Nice to see CJ back out there and doing alright. Lito wasn’t terrible again. Our safeties can’t cover. They do good at accepting gifts thrown their way, but not a good job of asserting their will. Our D Line was pretty beat up. Their inconsistency this year is getting very consistent. Now for Miami. Their record is correct, it is who that team is. It makes for a nice story that Sparano has inspired them but he is going to be fired at the end of the year. And for reason. The fact that they are all playing good (and they are) is a testament to their players. Kudos to them for playing above the ineptness of their coaching staff. Their O Line was dominant today. Their D Line was dominant as well. Quite simply, they beat us. No excuses in this league. Lack of weapons or not, we got beat by the better team today. Maybe it is the coaching staff, Hue is proving his greeness with each game. Bresh though, he has no excuse. If the players aren’t making plays, put hungry players in who will. Compensate for your teams weakness. If you can’t manage that, I agree, resign and step the hell out. All year we have had NO DEPTH. It is well known and hotly debated in this site. Now that we are banged up hard, you all just notice? Kool Aid was good, still is, but perhaps there was too much sugar in there. Time to water it down fellas. Fuck Tebow, wins are cool but good teams can shut him down. He runs and today he threw well. Good, he is supposed to, he is an NFL QB. He isn’t the second coming, shut down their run and score on their suddenly resurgent defense. The Patriots will, the Bears may be screwed. They are not going to win this division. If they do, then it really is the worst division in the NFL. A joke. I’m confident this Raider team can get it together. Enough to make playoffs. But with this team, don’t worry about giving up another 1st round pick to the Bengals, cause we sure the hell are not going to the Championship game they way we’ve played through 12 games thus far.

Yeah, I still have faith that we can still take the division,

but just looking ahead just in case as well.

My prediction is we both lose next week to Chi and GB. (Yeah, Chi is @ Den, and they have no Cutler of Forte, but I feel their D will kill Tebow’s offense. But that’s just me). Then we reel off three straight, while Den goes 2-3, losing against NE.

Well, that would be nice ...

When you get right down to it, our remaining schedules are actually really, really similar. We each have 1 clear division winner, playing mostly for playoff location (NE and GB), we each have two legit contenders for WC spots, playing for their playoff lives (Chi and Det), we each face to once-good looking teams that started the season on fire, now in major decline and pretty much out of it mathematically (Bill and Chargers), and then we both play KC.

The problem is, atm, tie-breakers … we’ve lost to one more common opponent than they have, and that is Miami, who they beat, and all the rest of the games are ‘common opponents’, so if we just match their record, we will continue to be on the losing end of the division. We have to win one more than them, that’s all there is to it. (unless their one loss is to KC, and we win both division games, in which case a 3-1 end for both teams ends up w/the Raiders taking the division).

Grabbing that 6th Wild-Card spot is not out of the question, either, if we can go 3-1. We have the TB over the Jets, but I’m not sure on the TB AFA the Bengals go. Jets finish out the season with KC, Philly, NYG, and Miami (not that bad, but they need to win 1 more than us), whereas Bengals finish with Houston, Rams, Cardinals, and Ravens … the only team that’s a pushover there is the Rams … AZ is looking fairly resurgent ATM so that’s not a gimme. They could easily go 2-2 during this stretch.

If we can get healthy and find a way to finish 3-1 (with a 4-2 division record) to end the season, I’ll be feeling like we deserve to go to the playoffs, I’ll say that much. That means that either we beat GB, or we beat Detroit on our way to winning our last 3 … either of those is good enough in my mind to feel we ‘earned it’. Not that I think we’d win any games, but it’d be fun for once.

When I’m totally realistic here, I have to honestly say I would not be at all surprised to see us end up 8-8 and nowhere within stones throw of the playoffs. If we don’t get back Moore, Ford, and D-Mac? That’s pretty much what I expect to see at this point … we’ll either beat SD or KC, and that’ll be it. Those three come back and play at 90% or better …we got a real shot at 3-1 and making it in.

If I'm fairly optimistic, I could see the season-end coming down this way ...

In the last week, we’ll need Baltimore to beat Cincy in the early game, and when they do, we’ll clinch the opportunity for a WC spot with a simple win against SD at the O.co. So,the Raiders will take the field knowing if we beat the Chargers, we’re in as a WC, minimum. Then if KC manages to beat Denver (which will be going on at the same time), we’ll take the division.

That is a totally reasonable scenario, and would make for the most exciting last weekend of the season we’ve seen since at least 2002. We’ll all be friggin GLUED to both games, excited out of our minds about the chance of making it in with nothing but a win against the hated Dolts, and rooting for the Queefs with all our might.

Even if we don’t win and make it in, at least we got to have every week be excitement-filled, and the season went down to wire … again, something we haven’t gotten to enjoy for MANY, MANY years. Last year I remember it was close … we still had a chance until after the morning games of week 16, when KC clinched just as we took the field against Indy.

If we’re still totally contending in Week 17, that’s good enough for me to consider this a pretty nice season, esp. considering all that this team (and us fans) have gone through to get there.
