Everyone's thoughts on our SS and FS positions?
I wanna know what everybody thinks about our SS and FS positions. If you guys want us to re-sign Huff and keep Branch as the starter or let players like Stevie Brown and Mike Mitchell get some starting time, or even maybe sign a veteran FA or use the draft. For me, honestly, I wouldn't mind keeping Huff and Branch as our starters. Huff played his best year yet making the 2nd All-Pro team while Branch, on the other hand, took a step back in a way. I remember last year Branch was on some cbsssportsline.com article as one of the young players on the rise. Branch was repeatedly beat this past year, but I still want him back as the starter. Branch can always run other players down and can lay the wood. Then there's a part of me that is itching to see Mike Mitchell get some starting playing time. I remember watching Mitchells college video from Ohio and he was sick nasty. Even this past year he had some pretty nice hits and played decent. So if I had the pick I would have Huff and Branch back there again, but I wouldn't mind seeing Mitchell get more playing time than he did last year, and throw Stevie Brown in the mix too. I didn't mention Hiram Eugene at all cause I'm not big on him starting at all. I know some people are thinking he'll be in the mix for starting time cause we re-signed him but I don't see it happening. He was a key part of our special teams and that's it. No way he should start. What do you guys think? Interesting to see what everybody thinks about these two particular positions.

Its hard to say what will happen?!
But i want the raiders to take a chance on JAIQUAWN JARRETT the guy is a monster and i believe he is projected as a 5th rounder
Yes.
him or Sands in the 3rd or later.

Wouldn't mind bringing in another safety through the draft.
Jarrett as mentioned earlier, or the West Virginia Predator (Robert Sands). Both can probably be had in the 4th round.

My name is Al Harrington. I do not get buckets.
I'm for bringing in Sands or Jarrett who are both strong against the rush and fleet enough to hang with the deep WRs & TEs
I stuck up for Brown big time, but after watching him all season see that he doesn’t move well laterally or provide security against the rush. Jarrett is one of the best tacklers I’ve seen in awhile – I love him and want him desperately.

if we keep huff
i dont think theres a need, but if we could get Jarret in the 5th i say take him, imagine Jarret and MM starting after a couple years under Woodson
The situation now, no es bueno
Gotta shake up what we have going now. I’d say keep majority of personnel you have to compete thru camp, but reality says, jettison a guy if you take one or decide to keep him? My preference?
I’m drinking the Kool Aid on Sands and Jarrett, and believe maybe Al sees something nobody does in another guy who can change positions and become the next phenom like Nnamdi.
Some say it’s impossible to succeed in Al’s antiquated system, but I remember a certain guy who just happens to be on staff right now, who did quite well, at a stage of his career where normally players only make headlines for retiring, being cut, or laughably trying to redness the league…

im a big fan of huff
think he’s gone a long way since his first couple of seasons. However, tyvon branch struggles a lot.
Branch is way too toolsy for me to want to give up on him just yet, but i think the best thing for the raiders to do is to keep a sharp eye out for anything that may be better in SS ( or simply let mitchell take the job from him).
either way, i feel good about the raiders safety situation right now (including its depth). I think there are much more important places to upgrade on this team.
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
Sands or Jarrett
Would be great additions, even if Huff was brought back we need more competition in the backfield. Last seasons performance left quite a bit to be desired. I like Branch, and think he will continue to develop, Miller and Brown are ok, but not even close to star quality. I am against filling in slots with free agents, there are not many out there that are better than what we already have. We have a young talented team, lets keep it going in that direction.

And, if Huff isn’t signed, bring in both Jarrett and Sands.

+1,000 on both !!!!!
If Huff ask for too much money, and I think he WON’T, like Nnamdi, both, I believe see the light at the end of the tunnel, and the end is quite near with the Raiders in the playoffs, THIS YEAR !!! Mitchell just hasn’t shown up enough, and in deep coverage, he’s in deep shit !!! Can’t cover receivers, other than SLOW TE’s, but is good against the run. Unfortunately, that’s not enough. The big hits are far and in between, and hasn’t lived up to all the HYPE !!! I can see Both Sands and Jarrett Starting as safeties, and could possibly trade Branch for a player, since we won’t be able to do it for a pick, unless the CBA gets signed. Branch being a Vet, still takes bad lines, and once he at full speed can’t change directions, allowing too many cut backs by RB’s !!! Every RB in the league knows this, thus making Him a HUGE liability for the run defense !!!
I say roll the dice - fast and furious - when they're hot. Another draft like last year - but better because it's so clear
what’s needed – stop the rush (w/ OLB – Matthews or Herzlich – and S – Jarrett or Sands AND stop the pass rush with Cannon and Wisniewski. A short but essential draft card … then we play some ball.

Wisniewski could fill the LG or play C with Sampson shifting to LG (whichever hauls ass better pulling). Langston move
to Carlisle’s position, RG, and Cannon assumes ROT. Lookout!

Unless we pull off some sort of draft day magic
there is no way we’re getting both Cannon and Wisniewski. If we did, I would love it! If we can only have one, I guess I’d choose Cannon. I’d love Herzlich too, titanium rod or no, that kid is a football player with a awesome football mind and desire that’s unmatched, minus the cancer he’d be a first rounder,(he’s the opposite of Dontay Moch) and I’d be stoked to have him on the Raiders. I suppose I’d take Sands over Jarrett, but either one would be a good 4th round pick.
If our Draft went: Cannon, Herzlich, Sands or Jarrett, and Skrine with our first four picks, I’d be more than satified
JUST DOMINATE BABY !!!
Throw in Casey Matthews and I'd go insane from happiness

My thoughts on our safeties is they suck balls.
Always out of position in coverage and take poor angles when tackling/pursuing.
"I'm surrounded by assholes. Keep firing, assholes!"
I want to take both Sands and Jarrett
and move Sands to cornerback.

I agree.
The reason I love Sands at CB is his height. He’d be perfect against the V-Jax/Bowe type WRs.

another FS/SS prospect. Ahmad Black.

I think he is more of a SS though. But I won’t mind throwing Branch at the FS position. Black is a 4th rounder, and if we dont get sands or jarret, I would like this guy.

Black is a smart talented Safety and a threat (in college) with the ball. His speed would disqualify him for a Raider Safety
Though a great college safety, I expect Ahmad will look average in the NFL.

A fair statement. :)
I am inclined to agree with you. imo, too, i think he has very good talent, like ford a his position before he came into the nfl. And black is actually fast. The 40 time he put up is not accurate at all imo.

still, when you compare his running form to the truly fast, Black reminds me of Ryan Matthews who also does not
pick up his knees … that form tops out speed-wise but does allow for quick moves

+1,000, either or. or better yet, BOTH !!!!
Especially if Huff signs elsewhere !!! I think Nnamdi is staying, period !!! Branch can be traded for a pick next year, and Mitcheel could still be the nickel LB/S. Start both Jarrett & Sands. I think this could work, especially in the run defense. Sure tacklers, who both take GREAT LINES to the ball. Win, win situtation. The last time we drafted to DB’s in the same year, Neil Colzie, and on my life I can’t remember my favorite’s player’s name, but played the FS spot and wore #47 !!!!
Clay Matthews wore 47 at USC. Are you thinking of Kent McCloughan the Raiders All Pro DB in the '60s? But he was a cornhusker
Think papa think!

I'm always Thinking, when it comes to the Raiders, SOB !!!
Brain somtimes goes into overload, looking at the possibilities, especially over the previous 8 yrs of fultility, before last year.
Actually, Papa, the last time we drafted two DBs in one year
was 2005. Fabian Washington in rd 1, Stanford Routt in rd 2.

1975 draft, Raiders took Neal Colzie......
in the first round, and Charles Phillips from USC, in the 2nd. Both played over 5 yrs. for the Raiders, unlike Fabian, who lasted only 2 yrs, before he was traded. Phillips played both safety positions, alternating with Atkinson & Tatum, with NO drop off in play. Sands reminds me of him, due to his size & speed. If Phillips knees had not failed him, we would be talking about him as one our Raider Greats that played the position, along with Tatum, Atkinson, Lott, And our knew DB coach Rod Woodson. He was that good!!! Tatum knocked out Sammy White with that Classic Hit in the 1st Super Bowl win, But it it was Charles Phillips that made Chuck Forman quit, and go to the sidelines, CRYING LIKE A LITTLE BIYATCH !!!!! Just a little Raider History, for you guys !!!!
Thanks Papa

I can SEE, SANDS aka the PREDATOR wearing that #47 !!!!
RAIDER-PREDATOR, his nic name fits no other TEAM, but ours !!!
Huff is looking for a pay day and will likely be gone...
Huff is probably gone since he is looking into a good payday. I think Branch and Mitchell will be a very good starting FS\SS. They’re both hitters so they should help vs. the run. Branch with his speed will probably be better at FS. Branch with his all out style does get banged up and was injured a bit last year therefore Stevie Brown will be a key piece to get plenty of playing time. Eugene is also serviceable when needed, but I wouldn’t want him to be your everyday starter.
You might see Eugene at starting safety
Do you really pay a special teams guy 10 million for 4 years? I don’t want to see it either, but that’s starter money. Huff is probably gone, so hopefully Al will bring us a young safety in the draft. Sands or Jarrett would be great, but someone has to start at FS until the new kid is ready. As Ive said many times the FS position as we play it, is the hardest position on defense and even with Rod Woodson to show the way, it won’t be a quick or easy transition for anyone. I’d rather see us trade up somehow and draft Patrick Peterson or Prince Amakamura for that spot, but that won’t happen and I’m not sure if Stevie Brown can handle it.
So unless the Raiders keep Huff or switch Branch to free safety and Mitchell to strong, you probably see old Hiram out there to start the season
JUST DOMINATE BABY !!!
