Oakland Raiders Free Agent Status Update

The following Raiders are Free Agents, either restricted or unrestricted (depending on the outcome of the CBA).  Like Romans at the Gladiatorial contests, I invite you to render your judgment on their futures in Oakland ... thumbs up or thumbs down.

4-year veterans

QB Bruce Gradkowski  [BRUCE!!!! ... yes, he shall see another season and hopefully greater glory]

RB Michael Bush  [Flash Update: Bush was given a 1st & 3rd tender ... the greatest ground game trio in the league shall return!"]

TE Zach Miller [Flash Update: Zach was given a 1st & 3rd tender ... Oakland's perennial #1 receiver and favored target of Jason Campbell will remain a Raider!]

WR Johnnie Lee Higgins [As a punt returner he dances and runs laterally as though disoriented; as a WR he is limited to sideline and out-patterns eschewing with dread being sent through the middle -Thumbs Down]

C Samson Satele [Samson improved so much last season that he saved his job - unless the back-up center we draft somehow challenges him]

OT Mario Henderson [If Mario was on the bubble, now, with Gallery leaving, we need even our mediocre linemen - Mario is granted mercy]

DE Jarvis Moss [we are thin at DE (even though our starters are excellent) so Moss is spared ... this season]

5-year veterans

FS Michael Huff [This is a tough one. It really depends on who we're looking at in the draft and how much Huff wants. I'm inclined to keep him if only to see what Rod Woodson (who was a Master at FS) can do with him]

LB Thomas Howard [I'm for giving him one more year since he does play well on STs. But his inability to beat Groves is a concern]

LB Ricky Brown [I only wish I had more Thumbs to turn Downward]

S Hiram Eugene [Thumbs Up ... he's good in coverage (though a marginal tackler) and makes things happen on STs]

6-year veterans

T Khalif Barnes [Thumbs Up ... since he showed versatility, enthusiasm and good hands]

T-G Daniel Loper [Thumbs up as Gallery's heir]

UFAs CB

CB Nnamdi Asomugha [Thumbs up if he doesn't break the bank]

QB Kyle Boller [Thumbs Down]

QB Charlie Frye [A solid hard-working 3rd Unit QB (unless we acquire a rookie).

QB J.T. O’Sullivan [Thumbs Down]

RB Michael Bennett [Depends on whether Bush signs. However, this is Bennett's 11th year - ancient for a RB ... what does the Coliseum say?]

T Langston Walker [A must keep Lineman. Hopefully moved to Guard]

LB Sam Williams [Alas, after 8 years of service, it is time to thank him and invert the thumb]

I cannot resist

Grad is done and I will take my pillage from SOB of Glenlivet when I come to Oak Town for a game the next season. I have even been admiring some more higher end type bottles that I will pay the difference for a celebratory reward for know Grad is done unfortunately as I do like him as a leader.
Fuck Mario we can get someone better through FA or draft.
Bush and Miller give them the money and do the right thing.
JLH should be done with Nick Miller but unfortunately we signed him.
Keep Satele, Barnes and Loper. Not so sure about Walker.
Keep Huff with a 1st and 3rd tender and let Big Rod work with him for another year.
Eugene and Howard for STs for sure and emergency back up for respected positions.
I like Bennett but not with 11 years on that body even as a back up he is still old but with little wear and tear.
Sign #21 but don’t over pay.
Fuck Boller but Hue will keep him I take Frye he showed balls in that one game he was given a shot and is apparently a workout and game study freak.
No Williams and no O’Sullivan.
We can draft and sign some FAs to fill the rest of the holes we have a pretty good core and with another year of chemistry it will get better.

Who gives a shit, who gives a fuck?

Son's, I know you hating this, but LAP is right !!!

Gradz has seen his last days in the Silver in Black, for O’Sullivan can make the same throws, and win more games, and behind a better blocking line, as it stands right now(roster that is) Frye is probably you Number 2, for the harmony sake of the team(J.C.‘s sake) !!! Also done is StuperMario, we can do better in FA’s, or the 7th round of the draft !!! Also on the “done list”, Higgens, Brown, and more than likely Bennett. You Just got to love the move Al D. just made, with the tenders. 4 picks if they choose to sign with someone else, or $3mil contracts for this year if no new CBA is signed, and if they chosse to extend the current cba, we should be right around the amount for last year, which is uncapped, and I’m sure will be the average amount for most teams this year. How smart is the Old Man looking now, considering all other teams are just STARTING to sign their FA’s !!!!

Al is locking in like a lazer. As his body fades his mind gains inversly proportionate powers - like a contemplative monk, Al's intellect shines as brightly as a saphire

I think Bush will get traded.

Mario will be moved to Guard, LT Veldheer LG Loper/Mario/Rookie C Satele RG Walker/Campbell RT Campbell/Rookie

Aso needs to come back. If he does then we really should get that Buster guy. That gives us some great depth.
Huff needs to come back. He’s underrated. ALOT.

That sets the bar high. But, who knows with, e.g. Patriots having so many extra draft picks they might try for Zach. Bush, however,

is pretty much locked in as a Raider (can’t see a team going that high.

I disagree SOB, I would jump at the chance to get a 1st & a 3rd rounder for Zach.

Especially if we were to get a mid-1st rounder somewhere in the teens means we would have a shot at getting Jimmy Smith, Mike Pouncey or one of the solid OTs like Carimi, Constanzo, or Solder. The reason I feel differently about Zach is not his ability as he is Mark Bavarro reincarnated with his ability to fight for extra yards after contact but his concussion history worries me about his NFL future. I think he is a risky long-term investment health-wise much like Gallery & his chronic back issues.

Zach is frothing at the mouth to return and, imo, is emerging as a leader on offense. Any player we select in the draft

could be injured or, for whatever reason, disappoint. Zach has proven himself 3 years in a row and deserves the chance to put it all together now that we have some decent coaching, and to make more money (he was playing hard well over his salary. That said, you raise legitimate concerns.

Both Bruce Gradkowski and Michael Huff gotta go. They both suck!! Bruce’s record as a starter is terrible and he is injury prone. Michael Huff’s career as a Raider is just as bad. No need in wasting good money on mediocre players. See Gallery has been shown the door. Both of these guys need to be walking through it too.

It seems like more of the same this offseason. We keep saying if we had this or that we would win but unless we change our whole scheme on defense we won’t win big games.

How does that apply to the Pittsburgh game? Our biggest problem - we couldn't score points

Every offense has

hiccups Green Bay couldn’t score many games but there defense stepped up and carried the load. Our defense is built to play with the lead we don’t get many turnovers. What about the Jags game when we gave up 30+ after halftime. This system hold players back Charles Woodson is Hall of Famer now he wasn’t when he played for us. We had a top ten scoring offense with no #1 WR , a piece of crap offensive line, and while playing hot potato QB. The Panthers gave up19 passing TD’s I know our Secondary is better than theres but guess what they don’t play a predetermined defense the whole game like we do. How can you be at the top of the NFL in pass defense but at the bottom when it comes to giving up passing TD’s. We stay at the bottom of the NFL in Rush defense why man to man coverage. You can’t play I am better than you are the whole season and win games.Football is a true team sport everyone has to work together to win. AL Davis hasn’t hired the right Defense guy or allowed anyone to change our defense. There is a reason no other teams play single high anymore it’s to simple to read. If Bill Belichick our same defense from last year I bet we would be in the playoffs we lost more games because of scheme. The chargers gave up 18 td’s to you really think they have better players in there secondary or a better scheme.

by Micheal Y on Mar 5, 2011 9:14 AM PST up reply actions

Just saying, it's not entirely all defense. We proved we could run the ball in Pittsburgh despite being the 2nd most

productive rushing offense and 6th most productive offense with regard to points scored. When the O can’t sustain drives the D is worn out and we suffered most in the 2nd halves as a result. I do agree with you about the misuse of personnel, being inefficiently used in a one-dimensional defense. When Marshmallow felt we were playing against a mediocre QB, he got bold and set the dogs loose with huge success; then when we came up against a Rothlisberger or Manning, he got cold feet and went vanilla. The irony was, we were burned more on long runs in the 2nd half than by anything else.
Even if Hue assumes the DC duties (which seems like the case), I still believe we are better off than last year because Hue has GUTS.

by Sons-of-Blanda on Mar 5, 2011 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

The reason the defense is worn down is man to man coverage. We depend so much on one person making open field tackles. Look at all our defensive highlights you never see gang tackles. I am not saying stop playing man but we have to set the defense up to win. I agree a lot of game the offense didn’t start out to hot and the Defense was on the field too much. But if you look at teams like the Jets there defense carries them a lot because they aren’t afraid to bring the pressure. I would rather Hue hire a DC or allow Mike Waufle or Rod Woodson to make the calls.

by Micheal Y on Mar 5, 2011 7:50 PM PST up reply actions

one more thing Sons

If Al Wants to win why doesn’t he just hire Jeff Fisher for one season as the DC. We all know he is going to be gone after one year. Fisher would make us favorite to win the AFC west even if we don’t have Nnamdi

by Micheal Y on Mar 5, 2011 7:58 PM PST up reply actions

Fisher track record doesn't support him being a DC ... Tennessee's D was ranked 26th last year and 28th the year before

They had better rush defense than ours – 20th vs. 29th. Also, being a HC for 17 years, it might give the wrong impression to certain new coaches on our staff.

There defense is pretty much a no name defense. We have most of the pieces to win. I think we have a better chance with a proven guy instead of wood shed guys AL keeps hiring.

If we're gonna have mutant FB's

running around, why not deploy Bruce Campbell as the blocking FB, and create holes so big, that both McFaddy and his evil twin can go through simultaneously, creating a rip in the time space continuum that ends up getting us an extra draft pick right where we need it most.

Even the demented sometimes swerve into good ideas. The Bears used William "the Refrigerator" Perry in short

yardage and to open holes for Walter Payton; the 49rs used a Guard successfully at FB as well, Guy McIntyre. As for the “evil twin” comment, well, xville typically sees the world through his weird filter.

I would agree

Campbell in certain situations, nothing wrong with that. The idea put forward implies a usage of frequency. BC will not have the right speed, foot work or running knowledge to be used in a typical backfield tandem. Good in short yardage and goal line at best but not much more.

Agree with you 100% Sons

I do think that Thomas Howard would be better at will than Groves was. Last year the Cable guy was blaming all our old LB’s for the shitty play against the run, so everyone got switched out or traded. Howard has the speed, coverage skills and tackling ability to handle the position, he needs to be given a chance to prove it, with Ro in the middle instead of Morrison, at least he won’t have to cover the vacated MLB position in addition to his OLB duties.

JUST DOMINATE BABY !!!

by rambis64 on Mar 5, 2011 10:38 AM PST reply actions

+1. at the very least, he would have excelled in coverage of slot guys, rbs, and fbs, and the TE when he came across

Noting Groves did nothing for us to help the ailing run defense, it puzzled me to not see Howard getting more time. I have zero doubts results would be better.

The same, in 2009 as it was in 2010 = 29th. And, let me point out, that was without Houston, Big John and Ro

So, if you concede that bringing in those three was an improvement, then it’s highly likely that Howard would have helped us more than Groves.

Morrison is a FA

I wonder how he would do on the outside next to Ro opposite Wimbley? He was out of position here, he doesn’t belong at MLB in a 4-3.

I like Howard, don’t understand why he didn’t get more time either. Cable had his favorites, and they got more time, so maybe he favored Groves?

I got the impression Al never liked Grad

Even after he won a few games it just never seemed to catch Al’s fancy. I think he was re-signed as insurance last year as a #2 not knowing if Boller or Frye would win the job. His instincts were correct and he just might do that again this year but not to compete for starter.

by Al's Wingman on Mar 5, 2011 5:31 PM PST reply actions

As you know, the Raiders have a history of having a seasoned backup. Blanda backed-up Snake and Plunk backed-up Stabler

There’s know way Boller or Frye are better than Grad (unless he’s injured). So even if we took a rookie, Grad will be 2nd on the depth chart.

trust me. I like Grad but 2 shoulder separations on his throwing arm in one season is bad news.

Who gives a shit, who gives a fuck?

by TheLyleAlzadoPunch on Mar 5, 2011 10:00 PM PST up reply actions

The separation he experienced is accompanied by a very long and difficult rehabilitation

And for qbs, getting back the strength to throw NFL passes—something for him that’s already been questioned—can be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

If he had a solid O line

He could go great things. I hope we keep him and Frye around, and use our draft picks on other needs.

The questions come down to:

If JC is injured in the playoffs, can Bruce make it through without injuring himself?

Can Bruce muster the arm strength to utilize our deep WR threat?

Can Bruce do a better job at compensating for his height disadvantage?

I wouldn't rule out Fry or Boller

Both showed a little something in camp and pre season last year. Fry’s work habits are unquestioned and he is an Al favorite (based on a single win as a Brown against the Raiders a muddey december a few years ago. Low scoring like 9-7 but Al calls attention to it). I want to like Boller but he’s a question mark.

Grad’s happy feet are not in line with Al’s pocket passer mentality and he is smallish and he gets injured frequently.

I guess we’ll know if the Raiders draft a QB or grab someone in free agency that they really like that would edge out the others guys a bit depending on how he performs.

I like Frye

The guy is a serious competitor and puts in time studying tape. Everyone around him praises him for his work ethic. Also, the guy has only had a chance to QB for less that quality offenses. I like him as a #3, especially for the price.

just because we signed a player

does not mean they make the 53-man (or whatever the count will be after the new CBA)

players such as Routt & Wimbley will, due to the guaranteed $$$,

but players such as Nick will once again have to earn their positions

We will sign close to 80-90 players, every team does every year

Thumbs up, down, and across

Down: Mr. Boller [even though I agree with his wife], Mr. M. Henderson, Mr. Walker, and Mr. R Brown, Mr Higgins, Mr. Bennett, and Mr. Williams

Across (or depends on contract): Mr. Huff, Mr. Satele, Mr. Frye, Mr. O’Sullivan, & Mr. Gradkowski [at least one of these will be cut-two if we draft a qb], Mr. Eugene great for STs, Mr. Walker

Between Across & thumbs up: Mr. Satele and Mr. Moss would be great back ups, Mr. Howard I have not given up on him either, but….

Thumbs UP: Mr. Bush, Mr. Huff, Mr. Z. Miller, Mr. Barnes, Mr. Loper, and of course Nnamdi!

I dunno

I Think we keep Boller and can Frye, Gradz is done. And Boller can still do some Magic. I watched Frye do the worst crap of a job at QB in Cleveland a couple years back. It was a sad day. We went in there with a better record, not that that is saying much, but we were the better team, and Frywee threw more int in that game than boller threw his whole career,(Ok that is a total embellishment, but you get the idea) But anyway, he threw 3 interceptions, and he just wasn’t really showing the skills. It was pitiful. And the way they ran over us offensively and defensively.. Anyway.. I still can’t believe I froze my butt off in that stadium to watch a loss like that.. sigh…

I remember that game. Frye played with a concussion he got the week before in Denver when his head bounced off the ground

Many agreed then that he was out of it and cut him some slack. The real culprit in that game was Cable who, for example, called a pass on 1st down on the one and then did it two more times even though Michael Bush was averaging 5.1 yards a carry.

btw

Here are some pics from that game. I just found this memory card, and posted a few of the pics on there.. The rest are not so good, my kid took them and he kinda screwed up the shot on a lot of them. But these were either taken by me, or he got lucky and caught a good angle. hehe.. http://raiders.jkoontz.com/

I will give Frye

some credit, for playing when hurt, He didn’t do too bad with a broken hand. Compared to many others, he is a god for being able to even do HALF way decent playing with a broken hand. But that was my first time ever getting to see the Raiders in person. I took my son, who was 12, for his first ever game. It was cold as a well diggers behind. I ended up giving my son my blanket, and my coat.. I was in a sweater, freezing my tush off, I ended up having the browns fans in my area hoping the Raiders would win, so I wouldn’t be freezing for nothing..

It will be interesting to see how this matches up against what happens...

Thumbs up:

Gradkowski – less because of what I think of his potential than of needing a safety net. I think that a developmental QB will be picked up, and neither Boller nor Frye seem to be capable backups yet (in our system). Once that happens, or the ‘new’ QB steps up, I think that Grads will be gone.

Henderson – not because he has done that well in the past (other than a few games), but because the line is unsettled, and to see what Wisniewski can do with him. One year to find out…

Moss – Too early to give up on; a year will tell.

Eugene – can buy into his staying, but on the bubble, depending on what younger guys show during preseason.

Barnes – he has shown that he can play more than one spot, and that can be invaluable in this league.

Loper – may not be a long-term solution as starter, but has shown the ability to step in for an injured player and not have much (if any) drop-off. That’s as much as can be asked of any player not starting regularly.

Asomugha – money will be the sticking point on this.

Boller – at least he’s been a starter, I’d rather have him than Frye, although a developmental QB brought in could send him on his way.

Walker – shown that he still has gas in the tank, but should be moved inside, IMO.

Thumbs down:

Higgins – doesn’t show enough, and what he does can likely be done by pretty much anyone that is brought in, by draft, free agency, or undrafted free agent.

Satele – just not big enough for a power blocking scheme, unless possibly as a backup until someone better comes along.

Huff – although hindered by the scheme, still too inconsistent; whether we stay with the same scheme, or change it up, make the youngsters prove it, as Huff has really not been able to in his time here, IMO.

Howard – still a liability aginst the run; don’t see where he is an upgrade or solid enough to backup in this defense, with his skill set.

Brown – still injury-prone, and too light to play the middle; replacements abound.

Frye – nothing special, and a young QB should be brought in now to be groomed to backup and eventually to challenge for starter.

O’Sullivan – same as Frye.

Bennett – younger and fresher third-string RB’s are not difficult to find.

Williams – expendable for a few years, IMO, but has stuck around.

Failure builds character; success reveals it

Think Bruce G. not coming back

I’d say sign him, but I feel the team is moving on, citing his medicals at this point.

The Raiders

tendered CONDO and Samson.

The fine will do well next year even if Veld,Campbell,Samson,Walker,Rookie, but would love to upgrade the RG and LG and C spots while moving Campbell to RT. Reports expect huff in Dallas and I would be fine with Brown and others taking his place. May
