LOS ANGELES -- Former Oakland Raider Anthony Wayne Smith appeared in court Friday to face a murder charge in the 2008 beating and shooting death of a man in northern Los Angeles County, authorities said.

Smith, 43, of Fontana, who played defensive end for the Raiders in Los Angeles and Oakland from 1991 to 1998, is one of three men charged in the killing of 31-year-old Maurilio Ponce, district attorney's officials announced Friday.

Once upon a time Smith was married to "Vanity" and on top of the World. He was drafted #11 overall in 1991 and made it all the way until Chucky got here in 1998. Along the way, he tallied 57 1/2 sacks after reaching 36 in just his first three years with Oakland.

Time and again, we are all reminded that we are all one bad decision away from the absolute bottom.
