Marcus Cannon Or "The Mini Wiz": Who Should The Oakland Raiders Seclect?

I know that this piggy backs on what Noontide has already written today, BUT, the SB Nation writer's Mock Draft is at pick number 48 and I have to choose between Marcus Cannon and Stefen Wisniewski.

The Wiz has been my guy all along, but I never thought that he'd fall this far. Over the past two months I have also been intrigued by Marcus Cannon and Danny Watkins, who is off the board. So, here is is, Mini Wiz or Marcus Cannon?

I am leaning toward Wiz for many reasons, but I want to post this to the Community.

Actually, I was just considering your very idea: Wiz or Cannon? That is the Question.

I believe Cannon should be the choice for two reasons. We need an OT more than a C. Cannon can replace Walker at ROT immediately while Satele remains as a capable C. If Wiz came in, Satele or Wiz would have to fill the Gallery gap and the other would play C … I’d like to see Satele at RG anyway.

On the other hand, if we took QB Kaepernick in the 2nd Round, we’d have to go OL in the 3rd, e.g. Orlando Franklin, Gilbert, etc.

Cannon is playing G in the NFL, not T, he doesnt have the quickness to play T

That’s why he’s projected 51st because he’s ONLY playing guard, not T, Wiz plays C and both Guards

+1. no guarantees this guy comes in and beats out Langston for the RT spot

Could be why he’s falling. Wiz is not. Take Wiz in the fourth, and take the pivotal, might be a Tackle at this level Cannon if he’s there in the third.

Should be the other way around, Wiz in the second and Cannon in the 3rd.

by Captain Chaos on Apr 13, 2011 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I originally projected Cannon to be taken by 48 but it appears he has slipped, again

While Wiz, not so much. I wanted Wiz all along, but didn’t figure him to cost us our first, but it’s beginning to look that way for sure. I think Cannon’s size make him likely for us; I’m not 100% sold, but agree that we need a tackle first and foremost. You gotta ask, is Cannon guaranteed to cut it as a tackle, preferably a RT you can start this year at some point? I think not, so I’m leaning now, toward Wiz, and voted for Wiz, though I have no idea what I wrote up there! Lol

Is Cannon the best option there? Probably not, so another thing in Stefen’s favor.

Wiz is projected in the 70's, he'll be there at 48

Cannon is falling because he cant play tackle in the NFL, he lacks the foot quickness. He’s a tackle he will be converted G thats why he’s falling. Wiz is our pick at 48, he will be there and he has fallen alot since the combine

So if we take Cannon, would he disappoint if he doesn't make it as a RT, and had to convert to G?

We know he’d beat out Carlisle and Loper at the very least at guard, but we don’t know if he can be a better tackle than Walker, which ain’t saying much, but he could down the road for sure.

That alone makes me wonder if Wiz isn’t the better value, as he can play center too. Cannon’s size makes him the likely pick for Hue’s offense.

because RT>C at this moment.

He is listed as a tackle

and as a RT, you dont need A LOT of quickness. All the quickness on defenses are on the left side. Cannon would be fine at RT, where he did very well in college anyways, and if need be he can play guard.

And by the way, here is some of his profile regarding quickness:

from nfldraftscout:

Pass blocking: Relatively nimble for his size, but there are concerns about his ability to handle speed on the edge. Difficult for college strong-side ends to get around, especially when technique-sound. Takes short steps off the line, can backpedal when necessary to cut off blitzing linebackers. Enough lateral movement to jar the defensive end with one hand while blocking down to double-team defensive tackles. Allows defenders too far into his body instead of extending his arms to lock them out. Has a strong second punch but it takes some time to land it. Bends at the waist and takes time to recover if punched. Lines up in two-point stance even when his teammates have their hands down because he’ll struggle to maintain contact off the snap. Will push off when opponent tries to disengage, instead of keeping his feet moving to sustain.

he has some trouble, but he generally has the talent to play RT. ALSO

Looking at the massive Cannon, it might be surprising to hear teammates identify him as one of the best athletes on the team. He is quite light on his feet for a man his size, a combination of size and athleticism that makes him a coveted prospect among NFL scouts.

AND

Pulling/trapping: His fairly quick feet allow him to create holes when trapping inside, but his ability to pull around the line is limited. Tough to shed, but a lack of flexibility prevents him from hitting targets in space or reacting quickly to inside defenders.

I understand that he has problems, but not every prospect is perfect. As far as size, and quickness, he seems like a very good pickup for a team who only has a 2nd rounder and wants a Tackle. And YES, he does have the size to play RT. IN FACT, he has played tackle MOST of his career, and has played guard a few times.

I am confident that he can play tackle in the league, and because you dont need a great amount of quickness for RT, I think he’ll be fine at the position, and he is listed as an OT in the draft anyways.

I want some who we know CAN play guard, not "played a few times"

And tackle in the NCAA is different from tackle in the NFL, i never said he didnt have size to play RT i said he didnt have quick enough feet for the edge rush, and the nfl has changed, teams now get edge rushers for both ends, not just the leftside anymore. He wont play OT, and ive read CBS profile of him, it has good things to say about everyone, but the biggest part that leads me to believe he cant play OT in the nfl is " he’ll struggle to maintain contact off the snap. Will push off when opponent tries to disengage, instead of keeping his feet moving to sustain" The best OT’s move their feet to stay in front, he may be a good guard, but size alone doesnt make him our pick. Too many ifs on him for me.

by NATIONSGREATEST on Apr 13, 2011 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

It doesnt have good things to say about everyone. I have used it for 3+ years, and I have read many negatives(hell, in the campbell profile they say some negatives about him too).

YOu want a guard, thats great. But we need tackle. And at RT, Cannon can play because he has quickness for a guy his size, and he has very good pop.

And Im sorry, but not many OTs are like Joe Thomas. OTs, especially RTs, are not all very quick. And no, 3-4 teams don’t try and get edge rushers on both sides. There are maybe two, maybe four teams in the nfl that have very good edge rushers on both sides, and primarily, they are on the LEFT side because thats where the LTs protect the QBs blind side, so thats where they need the best pass rusher. Campbell’s blind side is toward our left, not the right.

Cannonm can play RT. Will he be very good? Time will tell. I can stand here and say he’ll be great at it, but what I can tell you, is that Cannon can in fact play RT, and is not JUST a guard. And plus all OTs have some ifs. No one is perfect.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

honestly my biggest concern isnt even his foot speed

a big man like that who bends at the waist is never a good combo. being that big and bending at the waist means a good pop will send this guy stumbling into the next county, thats ur reason why everyone is projecting him for a G instead of OT. inside if someone catches him bending like that he’ll have center or back help to pick up the slack. on the edge u can have TE help but then whats the difference between him and walker??
my question is where is Ijalana at this stage?? is he off the board yet or no??

by frank7da2tank on Apr 13, 2011 11:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont know. He's a good tackle too.

But what Im saying is, is that Cannon has the abilities to play RT. And I was talking about quickness, not “foot speed.”

Technique can be taught, like most of the other OTs in the draft that would need to be taught better technique.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

usually with waist benders

its a real bad habbit to break, u can try and hammer it into them but in the heat of the moment they tend to always go back into they’re old ways.
foot speed is just a term we used for speed of thier kick slide things like that. honestly man i just dont see him having much impact at the OT spot. he’s basically walker just younger, and im not OK with that, we need more speed on that side of the line.

by frank7da2tank on Apr 14, 2011 5:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Well I think he is a big body, and has enough quickness

to be a good RT. Maybe a very good RT. I think he’ll learn, but I dont think him being a waist bender will be permanent.

I'm with Sons on this one

I like Cannon over Wisniewski in this situation because a guy who can potentially play guard and tackle (NationsGreatest’s protests notwithstanding) is more valuable to the team at this time over a guy who is slated for guard or center.

Next season’s Raiders are going to build on their success from last year by trying to be the best running football team in the NFL – it keeps the offense on the field and takes pressure off of Jason Campbell. Adding Cannon to the offensive line assists in that goal more than Wiz.

"When we play tough, and we play physical, and when we play the way we're supposed to play, can't nobody beat us." - Richard "SeaMonster" Seymour

by LiveAdam on Apr 13, 2011 3:08 PM PDT reply actions

How do u figure that when we are running a PBS?

We need strong interior linemen more than a tackle if we are running a PBS. The zone blocking involves more pulling and trapping which is where good tackles are a necessity. Wiz is the pick, people can hate on Wiz but there arguments are irrelevent our team.

by NATIONSGREATEST on Apr 13, 2011 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Strengthening our passing game automatically boosts the rush by pushing the LBs and Safeties back. The more balanced

we are the more of a threat with pass or rush – the rush too sets up the pass. So, having someone like Cannon who can bulldoze like Walker but also give our QB more time is key to our success.
And, nobody is hating on Wisniewski; if anything, he’s getting positive bias.

He liked Zach and started looking for Jacoby a lot too after KC-I. If we bought in a large target for him at WR, e.g.

Rob Housler, TE (FL ATL) (who the Raiders have already worked out) and gave him more time it might work.

Pretty damn good indeed.

I’m not sure how much of that had to do with the quarterback considering we had the 2nd best running attack in the game and a defensive line that destroyed QBs (Matt Cassell still can’t get the gass stains out) and Jacoby Ford adding some special teams scores it was the lack of Campbell getting us 1st downs that brought us down. I think the defense lost us two games and that was Houston and Miami. Pitt was just nightmare on everyone. So 5 games I put 75% blame on Campbell. If your just gonna shower me with excuses save it i heard them all…. Never in the same offense, No Wrs, No Oline, Injuries, Bruce getting in his head with a QB cont, Bruce being Cables favorite, Ect…

by raiderfan21 on Apr 13, 2011 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

5 games is a fair judgement, but it was his first year.

And keep in mind, a good running game sets up the passing game, and vice versa. Matt Cassel had a probowl year, and he had the “#1” running game. But here’s something you need to take into account:

When a QB goes back to through, he has to use pocket presence, read the defense, and throw accurately. As far as I know, Campbell has proved that he is very capable of doing all of those things. Plus we are, in fact, a RUNNING team, and those type of teams need a QB who can manage well when they are not running, and campbell can do that.

If you WANT me to throw in bruce, then how come bruce couldn’t perform that well at all when he was on the field? Truth is, is that he is just good as a backup, nothing more.

Also, I find it amazing that you don’t give him credit for things he does well, but when he does something bad, its all his fault:

it was the lack of Campbell getting us 1st downs that brought us down

You are not being fair to him raiderfan. You seem to be the type of guy that has to see campbell put the entire team on his shoulders his first year, and do well, which is not very realistic. With him, he helped us win games whether you like it or not, and he was getting very good chemistry with our guys as the season went down the stretch.

but after watching the 49er game I was shocked on how bad he was without McFadden. Is it gonna take another half a season before he gets warmed up again? McFadden is injury prone one good season won’t change that he has yet to play a full season. I didn’t expect him to put the team on his shoulders but at times it looked like he was tripping them up by the teams ankles. Our defence will be better but the Oline will suffer with Veldheer and Satele being the only ones back. Rushing attack could be hard to repeat but more then possible if McFadden can lead. I just feel like Campbell has been an 8-8 QB since he’s gotten to the league.

Everyone was bad that day. hell, brady had an awful game against the browns. lol QBs, and an entire team can can be awful.

Is it gonna take another half a season before he gets warmed up again?

I cant answer this until I truly see it. But as a guess, I would say yes. Look at it as excuses all you want, but they are true. he’ll be in the same system 2 years in a row, and there is no reason for me to NOT believe that he can’t take up from what he did down the stretch last year, where chemistry started to kick in.

McFadden is injury prone one good season won’t change that he has yet to play a full season. I didn’t expect him to put the team on his shoulders but at times it looked like he was tripping them up by the teams ankles.

We are, in fact, a running team. So obviiously our most important weapon would be… ding ding ding! A RB. And I think his injury pronness is done. imo.

Our defence will be better but the Oline will suffer with Veldheer and Satele being the only ones back.

No doubt. But OL is something we need to address. QB? Maybe not. I have confidence in campbell, and I have last year as my evidence, and his eventual continued experience in our system to back it up.

Rushing attack could be hard to repeat but more then possible if McFadden can lead. I just feel like Campbell has been an 8-8 QB since he’s gotten to the league.

Maybe. But you forget that we should have won 10 games last year, not 8. You can go off of feeling, but due to the fact that he has never been in a true system for more than 1 year, adds some confidence for me, as he will be in the same system next year.

The people in the locker room like Campbell. I remember they were saying good things about him. If we lose games, due to lack of OL, then you blame OL, not Campbell. Not even a scrambler QB will scramble forever, and those types tend to lose the ball when escaping, and get injured easier.

I’d like to stick with the guy that helped us with our success last year.

we were talkin about housler

maybe droppin a few lbs and becoming a WR on another post, thoughts??

by frank7da2tank on Apr 13, 2011 11:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Housler is moving up the mock boards he's solid 5th maybe end of 4th

I see us getting our wish for Vincent Jackson in drafting Housler and converting him to large WR target for Jason.

i love the idea

i only saw a short highlight real but from what i saw he catches the ball in traffic exceptionaly well and really could be that third down factor that we’ve been looking for. whats he run again? 4.5??

by frank7da2tank on Apr 14, 2011 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

he checks down

because the only players that can get open are McFadden,Reece,Bush and Miller

Power Blocking Involves Pulls and Traps, Zone Blocking Involves Stretching the Line
We need strong interior linemen more than a tackle if we are running a PBS. The zone blocking involves more pulling and trapping which is where good tackles are a necessity.

I would say the opposite is true. When Cable brought in his zone blocking scheme the number of traps and pulls went down considerably, as the offensive line simply stretched the defensive line out and allowed the running backs to do a “one-cut” style of running. Once Hue Jackson took over the offense the traps and pulls came back, even Robert Gallery said so.

I agree with you that Cannon will likely play guard in the NFL, I was simply disagreeing with your assessment that he couldn’t possibly play tackle. If the Raiders were fortunate enough to draft him I think he’d look great at LG next to Veldheer plowing the way for McFadden and Bush. Whether its at guard or tackle, I think Cannon gives the Raiders offensive line the road-grading run blocker this team needs to succeed. Like Sons said, its not a knock on Wiz necessarily, but I think Cannon is the better fit for this team.

by LiveAdam on Apr 13, 2011 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm glad you addressed the PBS distortion. Traps and pulls is what amped our rushing game that was being under-

mined by Cable’s ZBS – very ill suited for our personnel (both OL and backfield). Al never like the ZBS and Hue saw how it wasn’t working. Ironic that Punkin’s supposed strength was his undoing. Suddenly, Gallery became a noticeable factor pulling and blasting leaving gaping holes for DMC to showcase his talents against LBs and beyond. Our Guards now must be the quicker ones and the OTs both stolid pillars of strength and agile enough to hold the edge rush.

Cannon if we can get him.

I’m coming around on Wiz, but not with #48. Maybe trade up in the 3rd or into the late 2nd for him.

I really don't think he is going to last until 48...

but he is in this draft so take him! He’s perfect.

Niether. Trade up with the Patriots and get Sherrod 1st pick in the 2nd ya dig?

That guy is gonna be a star. Might even challenge Veldheer for the LT spot in a year or two.

I'm all for trading up to get a real tackle

I just don’t expect it. Also ambivalent about dealing future picks.

sherrod wont last to that pick.

Unless the colts decide not to take tackle, which I suppose is not outside the possibility given Polian’s drafting habits. BUt then he’d have to make it past the other 10 teams(i think its ten) which wont be too realistic.. imo.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

I wanted to take Clausen last year (thank god we didnt) but i would really like to see us take a QB

if Locker or Kaepernick are there I think we should take one.

I like Cannon over Wiz, and Cannon does have the foot speed to play right tackle, and he is big and strong enough to play guard...

I prefer Cannon’s teammate Kirkpatrick over Wiz at center, I know his Dad played for the Raiders and I am sure Wiz will have a good career in the League. However, the best player for the Raiders in my opinion is Cannon at 48, and if Kirkpatrick is there in the 4th at Center I say we grab him, he is a physical kid that loves the contact….Ozraider neither Locker or Kaepernick shoud be available after we pick our lineman, though both are good players. I have mentioned it before, but I would look to the 7th round and see if we could get T.J. Yates or Josh Portis, Yates I believe is a real sleeper in this draft, and though developmental Portis and Yates may be gems in the rough….

Cannon & Witkins are more powerful than Wiz, Wiz need's to develope power for Raider's scheme

I wanted Wiz untill recently because of who his uncle is. But after the combine scoutts are saying wiz is ready to start in a zone-blocking scheme now, but he will need a few years to possibly develope the power to play in a power gap scheme which the Raiders will be using more of this season. So at the moment I like Cannon, and I say move him to G, resign Walker and move him to G too, resign Henderson and Barns & have them compete with Campbell @ RT. If Wiz or Witkins is still there @ the 3rd round pick of course you grab them, & Witkins may still be there in the 3rd round because he will turn 27 years old when the season starts and most teams will want younger rookies.
