Top 10 Oakland Raider Draft Busts of All-Time: #10 Derrick Gibson, S, Florida State

Top 10 Oakland Raider Draft Busts of All-Time: Derrick Gibson, S, Florida State

To understand how depressing this pick was, all one has to do is look at 3 of the 4 names that followed Derrick Gibson in the 2001 NFL Draft, Reggie Wayne, Todd Heap and Drew Brees.

Coming out of FSU, Gibson was supposed to be the enforcer that the Raiders were missing in the secondary since the passing of Eric Turner (God rest his soul) . Instead, what Oakland got was a wasted draft pick as, in five less than stellar seasons, Derek Gibson totaled three interceptions, one forced fumble, 194 tackles and 14 passes defensed.

After five less than stellar seasons Derrick was out of football after the Raiders declined a 10 million dollar option on his contract after he'd already made nearly 6.8 million in his first six seasons.

Gibson was a "Swing and a Miss" by a team that was in desperate need of getting young while continuing to get better. he comes in at #10, so just wait until the rest of the list is unveiled in the coming days!

Here is a list of All Oakland Raider Draft Picks. Who are your top 10 busts?

My List

And a difficult one it was after number 1, trying to recall which one of these flubs caused the most consternation during their “careers”. Oh how I roil in disgust at the recollection of how many games were actually lost due to burning or blown coverages from Watts and Gibson!

1. Ja……
2. Bob Buczkowski
3. John Clay
4. Ted Watts
5. Matt Stinchcomb
6. Todd Marinovich
7. Rickey Dudley
8. Derrick Gibson
9. Patrick Bates
10. Marc Wilson

Heyward-Bey has to be in there:

At least Dudley had 28 TD’s in his 5 or 6 seasons here.

Too early to bust DHB...yet

He has this season (year 3), like McFadden to prove he’s not a bust and show true progression that he is a worthy pro wide-out, even if he’s never worthy of where he was drafted.

Generally speaking for me, a bust is in the top rounds

Here are my top 10:

10. Nick Bell – for all the hype coming out of college (Iowa), didn’t do anything in his time in the NFL. As in, almost nothing, period.

9. Marc Wilson – felt like rating him lower (higher?), but did have some okay seasons. However, for where he was drafted, and the expectations of him, definitely didn’t live up to either.

8. Derrick Gibson – detailed above.

7. Matt Stinchcomb – too bad we didn’t wait for his brother. A few starts here and there, but nothing even close to resembling a first round pick.

6. Patrick Bates – ‘The Sheriff’, my ass. ‘Barney Fife’, maybe…

5. Aaron Wallace – another flop that barely started, after being a second-rounder coming in with a lot of college hype.

4. Todd Marinovich – I give him a pass, to #4, based solely on the fact that he had some good games, but was a head case that should never have been taken. I will actually say that this was one time Al’s fondness for USC players bit him in the butt…

3. John Clay – a first rounder that had a career of two years, only one with Oakland. ’Nuff said.

2. Bob Buczkowski – a complete and utter failure; the poster boy until recently of bad drafting.

1. JaMarcus Russell – is there any doubt?

Honorable Mention: Robert Gallery – as much as he was one of the better OL the last few years, based on where he was drafted, and for what position he played as opposed to position he was slated for, I have to say he was a disappointment. On the other hand, pretty much every other team/scout had him as rated as ’can’t miss’…

Does

Leon Bender count?

He shouldn't be thought of in that way, IMO

Passing away before ever having a chance does not make one a bust, but is simply a tragic story.

I’d even say that with Len Bias.

I would have placed Gibson higher especially now that you have Fabian Washington at #7.

Gibson was the definition of a wasted pick. Sadly he was a 1st rounder only because St. Louis traded up to draft the guy Oakland wanted at the time (Adam Archuleta).
