DHB a bust?
A few days ago marked the one year anniversary of JaMarcus Russell getting cut, and the Raider Nation parting ways with arguably the biggest draft bust of all time. I have heard a lot of people saying that DHB is a draft bust and the Raiders should part ways with him as well. In my own personal opinion, I believe that DHB can turn his career around and become the play making receiver we all hoped he would be.
It is no secret that Heyward-Bey has not had number 1 receiver stats, or really shown he can be a consistent threat in the passing game, but often times it takes a receiver a few years to adjust to the NFL style of play. The negatives of his game are pointed out often, inconsistent hands, poor route running, rarely gets separation from corners, etc. The fact is I rarely hear the positives in his game. Everyone knows he has the pure athletic ability to become great, and he has a great work ethic which will benefit him in the long run. Also, he is an under-rated blocker in the run game, and being a run first team that is extremely important. I guess the point of this post is to say it is too soon to call DHB a bust. I would like to point out another player who played at Maryland by the name of Vernon Davis. He was unproductive until his 4th year in the NFL and now he is considered a very good tight end. Also, this time of year last year people where saying trade McFadden and look at the year he had. Give players some time to develop before you write them off as busts. I am predicting a break out year for DHB and the rest of the Raiders receivers.

Anyone's stats would be horrible
With the Fat one throwing to them, year 1 is a wash. From what I have seen, “-” has flashes of a quality, but he should not be our #1. Ford has proven that he is that guy.
The reality is MIller is our best receiver, and JC loves throwing to the TE. I don’t expect to see a huge year from any receiver due to the TE and running game. I just hope "-’ catches more than 26 passes this year. If the CBA gets worked out (it won’t) then I would like to see a re-structuring of his contract.
I know Al will force him into the game, but I would rather see Ford and Murphy as our top 2 WR’s.
"We can't stop here... This is bat country."
At this point
I am waiting for him to stay health before I label him as anything. He has the potential to be a top WR, but it might be one of those cases of “could have been great”.
"We can't stop here... This is bat country."
I for one am glad Schilens doesn't get significant playing time
as a Chiefs fan I gotta say, that guy scares the hell out of me.

i cant call DHB a bust
after the McFadden breakout last year, we should wait until after his 3rd season to label him a bust, maybe even his due to Russel being his QB for a year, and this lockout.
This is his make or break year
If he still can’t put up decent numbers after this year, then he will be a bust, at least as far as draft position. He may still be productive, but since he was taken at #7, anything near what he has done and shown so far would earn him the bust label. To avoid that, he will need to break out this year.
We’ll see…
Failure builds character; success reveals it
He's not a bust if you simply consider him a young football player in need of development
However, that is not, nor has not been his role on the team. He was brought in to be a contributer and starter from day 1. He’s a guy who disappears from the offense for games at a time, and his production is laughable in comparision to his peers drafted around him, and even a couple of other young recievers on the team. I see him sliding down the depth chart this year and his production will continue to suffer.
"I’m back to my first love – the Oakland Raiders and working with the Offensive Line. I’m a Raider for life." -- Steve Wisniewski
You listed "-"s (DHB's) strengths
but if you want to be a wide receiver in the NFL, you have to be able to catch the football. It’s not something that you should have to be taught at the NFL level and our pal “-” can’t catch a cold, and is not likely to learn anytime soon. So if he does some how manage to turn himself into a respectable 2nd or 3rd receiver someday, he’ll still be considered a bust of sorts just like Gallery. If your drafted 7th overall your expected to be an elite talent, he’s not. Just like Huff, also drafted #7 overall he’ll be considered a bust, maybe not of JaFatass’ status, but a bust none the less.
This is what we get for going for speed alone, although Jacoby Ford was drafted using the same methods, but in the forth round. At least Al seems to have figured out that if your going to draft the fastest guy in the draft you don’t have to do it in the first round.

Where he was drafted make him an ever present candidate for that...
The interesting part is, the organization ackowledged him as a developmental guy. I love the physical tools he possesses, as well as the dynamite work ethic. Does it mean he’ll be what we expect him to be ever? Not so sure.
I think he’ll be at the very least, a fine and serviceable addition to our team, and expect Denarius Moore to elevate the play of all the guys sooner than later. I don’t think he’s as bad a route runner as people say; he’s not good, either, but the potential is there. He has executed some double moves amazingly, and with the guys like him with the developmental label learn to relax and just catch a lot more when the separation becomes a given, which if he continues to work, will probably happen. We also need some chemistry to develop with his fellow wideouts, the pass protection packages and his gunslinger. This has been almost impossible with our lack of a wr corps that has emerged, and only a year with the current qb. Have other young guys shone their first year under similar circumstances? Absolutely. But the verdict is still out on this kid. This year is the make or break year without a doubt.
I’m pulling for him, because I love his work ethic, and ability to keep his mouth shut and be a solid locker room presence, often staying late to work on things in practice and otherwise. Right now, I can say it’s still about fifty-fifty he goes either way. I wish I could say better, but we just don’t know with the kid.
The one thing I am surprised about is that I no longer wish we’d have taken Michael Crabtree over DHB. He definitely looks to be a better wideout right now, and odds say he will be down the road, but all the other baggage he brings make him not worth it to me anymore.
The Nation is pulling for you Darrius; we’re holding out hope. Maybe not believers, but it’s your time to step up to the plate, son! It’s time to not overthink your golf swing here, and just step up and hit the ball.

And welcome Trho14! Stick around! We appreciate new voices

def not feeling DHB right now
but he’s shown marked improvement since he arrived. let him stick around, since if he can take it to the next level. Its not like we have a ton of proven guys at the position…
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
I don't think his hands are as bad as everyone thinks
I like brhynno’s comment don’t over think your golf swing. I think sometimes he over thinks while he is playing, and if he can get out of his own way and play he will be much more productive. Are his hands inconsistent? Yes, but you can work on that, people can develop stronger, softer hands. It’s not as simple as you either got it or you don’t, and with his work ethic I see him doing everything he can to make himself into a great receiver. I admit I am overly loyal to all Oakland players, even the fat ass up until the day he was cut, but I honestly believe in DHB and think he can turn his career around.
When people say that "-" has a problem with his hands, "hands" shouldn't be taken literally. The problem, as you indicated,
is in his head. Plus he still jumps up in the air to catch the ball for no good reason. I reviewed some film of his games at Maryland and his QB was throwing the ball high a lot, maybe he picked up that grotesque habit there. But, he has to get all the shit out of his head … fortunately, he has a great WR coach who has been working with him – thus all the wonderful strides he’s made in the past two seasons.

In an article posted right after mine
the person states he needs to learn how to catch, and that his hands aren’t magically going to get better. I think in this case and in most complaints about DHB are talking literally about his hands. On several occasions I have heard people bashing him saying he has stone hands, can’t catch, and only has speed. I don’t feel like a lot of people understand the mental part of football, they just see a guy dropping balls and say oh this guy can’t catch. I will say that there are times were people don’t mean it literally, but I don’t feel like that is the case a lot of times.
Regarding hands,
it’s more that he came in and NOT used his hands; ie, used his body to catch instead of his hands; doesn’t look at the ball all the way in; difficulties timing the ball; and not coming back to reach at highest point. Hence, why balls would go right through his hands or bounce off his chest. Bottom line, you can’t pick that type of development work at 7; trade down to 15-20 if he’s your guy. If not, simply pick the most prolific WR on the board if it’s a need position, Crabtree would have been fine. He’s not a bust yet, just an expensive project that cost you games along the way.

compared to others...... BUST!
When you consider DHB was the 1st WR in the 2009 draft (#7) and all these WR’s were picked after him: M.Crabtree, J.Maclin, P Harvin, K. Britt, H. Nicks, M.Wallace, A. Collie, L.Murphy, B.Robiskie, J.Knox, and others, how could you not call him a bust?
However, Mike Williams(USC, Lions, Raiders, Titans, Seahawks) was considered a bust until this past season. He made the effort last year and it showed. I hope DHB calls him up and finds out the secret.
In His Head, Best explanation going !!!
While I agree with this, the thing that so apparent to me is, that they have yet to run him in routes that can show off his skills, ie; his speed !!! Throw a couple of bombs !!! Whether he catches them or not, isn’t the point. Don’t get me wrong !!! I hope like hell he catches them all, but what it would do is back the DB’s off him, for the routes he does catch balls on, comebacks and curls !!!! 90% of his catches are from these two routes !!!!
How many bombs has jason ever thrown? Answer:
A) zero
B) one
C) more than one but less than 8 – if you count college
D) dozens … but only in practice

yes, you just can't learn to catch smoother. *Some have very quick reactionary fingers others don't.*
It’s like saying you can improve your arm strenght significantly and dramaticaly. No.
He’s a body catcher. We just need to use him on short slant then cut and face the QB’s direction routes for him to corrale the ball in his body. No more deep routes. Let’s see if he can juke, all he needs is just slight separation and JC’s anticipation of were he will be and boom, CATCH! Or Just run straight like if it’s a hail marry but then cut back quickly as hell and run back a little bit, Hence the ball should already be coming to him without him yet going back JC needs to know his DHB’s route route. This is all moving the chains not a long strike for a TD, fuck that, let’s just keep moving the chains and gaining chunk yards with short routes.
The RaiderLaker
maybe if JC throws it hard enough he
can get the ball to stick in “-”’s face mask for a completion.

Not a bust......yet
I can’t call the man a bust, not yet. He was drafted far too high, so him being a first round draft pick is not his fault. The Raiders could have grabbed him in the 2nd or 3rd easily. He has a great attitude, he worked hard last summer to get ready for the year. He has shown flashes of being pretty good, but he also disappears for games. He really needs a solid veteran receiver to show him the ropes. His hands will come with practice, which he seems to do. He is a hard worker and seems like a level headed guy. He’s fast, and that really does open doors for him if he starts catching and running his routes better. For now, Ford is still the man and Murphy is a solid 2 or 3. Young receivers need at least 3 or 4 years to really do something. Unless they are like Moss, it takes time. Nnamdi struggled his first few years and then turned it around. We just have to wait and see. Hopefully football happens this year, so we can wait less and see more :)

Unfortunately
where the player is drafted does figure into his bust status, so no matter who’s at fault, the Raiders or “-” , he will be a bust if he’s not a productive number one type receiver this year.

In the Glockster's book...
He gets one more season. Same QB, same offense. Hold on to the ball when Jason throws at you, make somebody miss, and block downfield for DMC. If you don’t post pro-bowl numbers but do those 3 things, you’re good.

Good,
but still a bust, just like Gallery was a good guard, but still a bust because he got paid left tackle money. “-” is being paid #1 receiver money and if he does produce like one he will be (by definition) a bust.

A guy gets drafted #7 overall to come in and be productive
end of story, and after 3 years he doesn’t, he’s a bust. It doesn’t matter if he didn’t have a great QB or offense.
This kid just doesn’t have the hands to be the receiver he was drafted to be, not his fault, but that doesn’t make him any less of a bust.
Him being a bust is also on the team, but unfortunately the label goes on the player.

WR's do have a hand in their own stats
True, they are not the sole authors, but what position is? RB’s have to rely on the OL to get yards, QB’s need both receivers and OL to function to post numbers, even punters need some help to avoid the San Diego meltdowns of last year.
Heyward-Bey was only minimally succesful last year, IMO, due to his own stats. For instance, he was targeted 62 times, but had only 26 receptions for 366 yards, a 50% clip. There are only a few WR’s even close to that (with at least 60 targets): Brandon Lloyd, 77/153, 1448 yards; Braylon Edwards, 53/102, 875 yards; Nate Washington, 42/94, 687 yards; Lee Evans, 37/82, 578 yards. However, while their percentage was a little lower, at least Washington and Evans brought in 6 and 4 TD’s, respectively.
A stat that does speak in his favor is that he had 17 first downs on those 26 receptions, which means that he has at least been able to occasionally catch the ball in traffic, but that is somewhat faint praise; what NFL caliber WR isn’t supposd to be able to do so? Jacoby Ford had the same QB and OL, and while his reception percentage wasn’t any better, at 25/51, he had more receiving yards (470) and TD’s (2), as well as more first down catches.
DHB is not necessarily bad, but his numbers are not entirely at the mercy of the offense.
Failure builds character; success reveals it
im just saying theres not a connection
its not like we had a great passing game then we drafted him and all of a sudden it was terrible. Is he playing at the spot he was drafted at? definitely not. Is he playing up to expectations? kind of. But i agree with you that year for will tell if hes a bust or not.

i like to compare DHB to roddy white
both were drafted relativly high and both had pretty dismale rookie and sophomore seasons, roddy broke out his third season when matt got there. maybe being in the same system will help jason campbell enough to allow DHB to have that break out season. if we can get chaz on the field itd deff help a ton. he’s a player that makes everyone else better at his position just by bein on the field. with him and hopefully a RT, we should be alright.
we drafted him=bust

DHB is def. not a bust
A “bust” implies that people assumed you would be playing at something of a high level. Only one person assumed this, the rest of the world w/ 2 working eyes didnt think much of him. So basically dhb is performing at the exact level he was projected too.

No, the conventional way of looking at is:
he was drafted seventh overall and expected to start and perform immediately, not drop half the balls that come to you and be out of position the other half.
This will be his bust or not year and becoming a decent 3rd receiver won’t count, he has to become this years Roddy White to shake that label and JC has to help him do it and the O-line has to help JC. So it will be a team effort if he’s not a bust, but he can be a bust all by himself by not running crisp routes and dropping passes that are right in his hands.
