I never like believing the worst for a Raider. This time last year, I thought I was the only remaining member of Raider Nation who still believed in Darren McFadden. The year before, the Fat One. Yes, I even believed in him.
But I don't believe in DHB.
Why not?
Simple answer. Darius Heyward-Bey has terrible hands.
As a WR, you can improve many facets of your game. You can develop as a route runner. You can improve your run blocking. You can learn to read coverages better and react properly.
But it's nearly impossible to learn to catch the ball. Hands are innate. You either have them or you don't. DHB has clearly shown he doesn't.
He isn't a case like DMC, who's flaws in his game (specifically, running too upright) were easily fixable. Nor is he a Fat C**t, who just never cared.
That's the sad part of this saga. DHB cares. You can tell it gets to him when he drops a pass in a game. By all accounts, he's a first class bloke and a hard worker. And he definitely has become a better route runner since he came out of college, realising he can't just burn by everyone like he did there. He puts in effort on every play and run blocks very well also. But his hands aren't, and won't, magically get better.
I want to see him succeed. I want him to become the next great Raider WR. I would love nothing more than to be wrong.
I just don't think it can happen.
