Oakland Battles Cap To Fill Needs

Oakland is one of several teams behind the 8 ball with the new cap restrictions , but they aint going down without a fight . Under the new rules we started this free agency period 14.9 mil above the cap , alot of which could be alleviated if we are able to get a long term deal with Wimbley stretching that franchise money out over a few years . After that there is not much wiggle room unless willing to release a couple players Al would probably prefer to keep around .

Reports indicate yes indeed OT Gaither is on his way to Oakland giving the Raiders the tackle we were obviously in desperate need of , and were close to an agreement with FS Goldson which will be christmas in july if we can close the deal. The bidding war for Goldson is getting intense though and Oakland is really struggling with cap constraints to pull it off .

Al Davis took a gamble  when the players filed their anti trust suit , that the NFL would play under 2010 rules while it went through the courts just as before , and did his best to lock up his core players rather than lock them out , to the other owners dismay . With a new CBA and cap in place it will take some serious finagling to get what we need  and hopefully retain TE Zack Miller .

In order to get what we need it probably take getting a long term deal with LB Wimbleys preading that 10.5 mil out over a few years , the danger is by the time Al is able to renegotiate with Wimbley , or make the cuts necessary to clear the cap room Miller could be gone. Reports are he may already have a deal else where , which would be Oakland worse case scenario . We are prepared for the loss of Asomagua , and are working on a solution for the loss of Huff , but we are completely unprepared to loose Miller .

Evenif able to renegotiate Wimbley's deal , there's not much room for Oakland to work with , Al has already bitten the bullet and let Asomagua go on to greener pastures, but after that , there are few  big salaries to renegotiate or cut to create the room for Miller and get under the cap . Kelly may renegotiate to clear cap room , but he's a favorite of Al so I do not  beleive Al would part with him for cap space , Heyward Bey could rework his deal to a more realistic number in line with his production , but if not willing Al would not cut him to create cap space , and even if he was willing to, if he did cut him and Miller left anyway , we would be in Quite a pickle . After that there are very few contracts large enough to help , Mc Fadden ain't going no where , and the only salary left to cut on the defensive side of the ball is Howard , but that doesnt clear all that much money .

If able to land Gaither and Goldson , weve gone a long way to filling our needs , but it wll take some real finagling to pull off a deal with Miller . That said if we get Gaither , Goldson , and Miller under contract you will have to consider this off season a huge success despite the losses of Asomagua , Huff , Gallery , and any other cap casualties .
