Ask A Cardinals Fan

Hello Raiders fans and sorry for this coming at the last minute, but I was wondering if any of you had any questions before the Cardinals and Raiders face off tonight? I guess you can think of me as the representative from your sister/cousin/brother blog, Revenge of the Birds.

Like Screwfish mentioned on our site, we won't make fun of Al Davis and make jokes about him if you don't give us grief about having Derek Anderson as our QB last year, deal?

Star-divide

As far as Arizona goes, it's hot here, but I guess that wasn't enough to keep the team from getting some good free agent acquisitions. They picked up Stewart Bradley, Todd Heap, Daryn Colledge and other players that could fit in very well too. Oh, and they traded for some Kevin Kolb guy.

Ya, we know we won by a fluke field goal last season, but don't be a hater. Ask any question you may have, kickoff is in about 3 and a half hours. If you want to rec this post, that would be great as well.

I guess my first question is what is the general feeling about Kolb

And how has he performed in camp?

"Anytime you have an organization and an owner that wants to win as badly as Al Davis wants to win, and will spend the money to win, I don’t think you have as many barriers as you think. Those are easy. The ones that would be tough is where you didn’t have any good players and you had an owner or an organization that didn’t want to spend any money to get good players." - John Madden, 2008

"We’re going to be a tough, rugged football team that walks with a swagger and plays the way the Raiders used to play." Hue Jackson

Kolb has performed as well as any new QB could for a week in camp

He just started practicing last Thursday and has shown flashes of brilliance on one hand and plays that make you scratch your head on the other. I was up at training camp last weekend and saw him throw 3 INTs on Saturday (1 was a great defensive play by Darnell Dockett, the other should have been PI), but he looks to already have some good chemistry with players like Fitzgerald.

Most ROTBers feel mixed about Kolb, which is fine for right now. We really don’t know what we have with him yet, so we will just have to wait and see. I am personally a lot more optimistic than I was before the trade was made and people were just guessing. I have seen him practice and know what he is capable of.

You will get a broad range of answers on this one

On ROTB a little over half the members thought it was a good deal and a little less than half think we gave up to much (DRC and a second round pick) for an unknown quantity. I am in the second group.
Having said that, the card FO had to do something after the terrible play at qb across the board last year for AZ and they did make the biggest move for a qb in the league this year.
Performance wise we really haven’t seen enough and will be watching him closely tonight. In the few practices he has made some good and bad throws.
I will say this: 1) He has looked good in interviews and says all the right things. 2) The other players and the staff seem pretty confident he is the real deal and say they like what the see on and off the field.

That's great

Thanks guys, I have been wondering about that. I think as long as you guys are patient you should have a good QB

I think our guys will remember last year. Expect a blowout. Stupid Janokowski!!!!

(And by that I mean in the first quarter, no excuses, starters vs starters) 17-0 Raiders after the first quarter.

Yeah, I forgot about the missed FG until Tyler mentioned it

Our team sucked last year IMO. I don’t see how this year can be any worse.

And not to sound like I’m making an excuse for tonight but – the only real goals Whiz ever has for the Cards in preseason are to see what some of these guys have and avoid any major injuries.

Also didn't you guys lose that good young CB?

How do you feel about that? Or do you think that the trade off for Kolb was totally worth it?
Is your secondary weak?

Secondary still looks pretty decent

Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie was shipped off in the Kolb trade, but many aren’t sure if he would have fit in new DC Ray Horton’s defense anyhow. The Cards will be using a lot of blitzing and tackling will be a priority, which is something DRC was not very good at. Great cover corner and obviously the best corner the team had, but AZ needed a QB and DRC was part of what they had to give up to get their guy.

Look for Richard Marshall (FA from Panthers), rookie Patrick Peterson and even undrafted rookie A.J. Jefferson (who is currently a starting corner on the depth chart) to make up for the loss. Greg Toler is still there as well.

Hey Birdfan....

Saw Oakland-Az in an exhibition in 1997….it was hotter than two rats fucking in a wool sock! I took my daughter who was 12 at the time and we sat 50 yard line on the Raiders side….she was tripping just on the fans. The game was a total snore.
My 2 cents is that Whisenhut fucked Leinart without a reach around…should have given him some confidence and allowed him to grow. Like Childress, he went with a great veteran QB and kicked his young one to the curb…and we saw how that went after Favre self destructed and Warner retired….in the toilet!
Have a good season, Cardinal fan…..take care.

Big difference in your comparison

Childress brought Favre in to be the starting QB in Minnesota, Jackson was apparently not the guy he wanted and Favre was a better QB anyway.

In Arizona, Kurt Warner was brought in to be a backup to Matt Leinart, but ended up beating him out for the starting job in training camp. Warner ended up leading the team to a Superbowl, so obviously we know that the decision Whisenhunt made at that time was a great one.

When Warner retired, Leinart was supposed to be the guy, but he never panned out. That lead to the Anderson disaster and the terrible 2010 season.

Now, here we are in 2011.

Denny Green brought in Warner, not Whisenhunt.

Been a Cardinal since 2005, before Leinart – Denny’s “gift from god”. So yeah, big difference between the situation in Minnesota and Arizona. Closer to situation right now in Denver. Coach drafts quarterback of the future and gets canned. New management doesn’t share the enthusiasm.

Just making the vet comparison, but in the details you're correct.

But if you think Whisenhut had demonstrated some QB acuity, you wouldn’t of had your 2010?
For me your coach started looking like Shanarat after he lost Elway…even Jake Plummer wasn’t good enough.
