Zach Miller is a Seahawk

Site Note: Well Zach Miller has flown the coup. This was the one thing I didn't expect to happen.

 Link

"Miller, the tight end who was one of the best remaining NFL free agents available, has made a surprising decision to sign with the Seahawks after it looked like he would stay with the Raiders, ESPN is reporting. The Raiders took Miller in the second round of the 2007 draft, and he’s been their starting tight end since. Last year he led the Raiders in catches (60), receiving yards (685) and receiving touchdowns (five). Miller will be the Seahawks’ starter at tight end, and perhaps Tarvaris Jackson’s most important receiver." Well this season is pretty much tanked.

I loved Zach as much as anybody bt this loss is FAR from insurmountable.

The initial emotional reaction is understandable but take a step back have a think about it and have some perspective.

not just that but

he had a big QB controversy through the 1st part of the season

and an unproven defense. And well… the offense was unproven as well.

So its more than just having an easy schedule. And going 6-0 in the division is no easy task.

The OL is average.

Murphy is good as well as ford, and our running game was #2 in the league last year, and our defense had the 3rd most sacks, and #11 overall last year.

I’d say more than pretty good.

Looking at the offense though, we have scored over 30 points more than half the season. I want to say we are top 10 in points last year, and being #2 in the running game is pretty damn good.

I just logged in and you took the words out of my mouth Jack.

We have big guys at tight end who I think will at least provide adequate blocking to help improve the passing game. It’s time for Meyers to step up with the rest of the wrs. You realize though that without Zach, that more experience has been eliminated from the o-line. I hate Zach for taking a dump on us. Zach took rushing reps away from DMC, Reece and Bush. We have many players to draw away defenders to open up the run

But Gallery followed his linecoach. Still, we can do better, e.g. Mario Henderson assuming the LG.

Miller gone. DHB is sitting on the sidelines, not practicing. Kinda like he was “hurt” for five or six of the last games of his rookie year? He can’t catch a cold anyway. Murphy is not consistant, Ford broke his hand already, Shillens will probably be hurt soon, considering he always is. Who the heck is going to catch the ball. As I have been saying

We have multiple pass catching options now where as for a few years Zach was pretty much it. if Chaz is healthy you could almost call it a wash when it comes to receiving and we have some really good blocking TE’s in Myers and Gordon and it’s not like they cannot catch.

I have 100% faith in Hue and his ability to scheme this out I expect Marcel Reece to see some time lining up at TE along with Big Rich and David Ausberry. myers played well in his opportunities last season.

In Hue we trust

One good season doesn’t make you better than a player that has been locking down WR’s for the last 2-3 years and was easily part of the best CB tandem last year. He and Leon Hall were actually better than Cromartie and Revis as a tandem.

And as I said on a previous post Hue can easily scheme around Zach not beng there’d wit all the talented youg receivers we have especially with Chaz looking healthy.

We have nobody that can give us close to what Kam does.

Pass the kool aid

Some of you people have lost your minds. Wimbley one of the best linebackers in football? Routt one of the best CBs? We just lost one of the top three offensive players on our team. (Dmac & Ford being the others) to Tom the Cableguy and you people act as it’s nothing. Our offensive line sucked enough with one of the best blocking TEs in the game, who just happened to have great hands as well. How much are we paying that loser DHB, who has yet to practice with the team this year? You people on here can make all the excuses you want and say how it doesn’t mean anything, but you are wrong it does. The same people who say it doesn’t matter will be the same ones pissing and moaning about the team when we are just hoping to make it back to 8-8 like last year. You don’t get better replacing great players with average players. Losing Zach hurts, it hurts bad!

I'm a fan of a winning Raiders

team that I watched through out the 70s and 80s not what I’ve been watching over the last 10 years or more. A generation has now grown up knowing the Oakland Raiders as losers and not winners. That kills me! The reason we are not winners is crap like this. The Raiders used to be the Eagles of today. We went out and got the players we wanted, instead of teams cherry picking our best. I am a fan of winning. Just win baby, remember?

But i understand why, we had no shot at Nnam and we couldnt lose both him and Routt, and Kam needed to be a little overpaid to get him off the franchise tag.

They tell you they’re gonna finally change for the better and do you right. They show you some glimpses of a change coming. So you say ok and give them your love.
But what happens?
They just go back to doing what they do best. Fucking you over and ripping your heart out.”

Both Gallery and Miller were injured last year and we faired pretty well without them. Not saying that we shouldn’t have resigned Zach but there are other players worth keeping then them. Boss can replace Zach and with that extra money, we can add Tatupu and maybe even Braylen.

I dont understand how people say that Routt didn’t cover the best reciever, when he actually did. He’s not a product of Nnamdi being on the other side, as he proved that he played well getting the majority of the balls thrown to his side.

and summarily jettisoned all cargo that isn’t. It’s an out and about way to find out, but like I said when Nnamdi left, if you don’t want to play for us, then don’t let the door hit you in the ass. Good riddance. TEs are a dime a dozen.

Zach did nothing but get open and catch balls and block well, but it’s next guy up, and I choose to believe a guy who will get paid much less will relish the opportunity and exceed expectations. Fuck you fairweather shitheads. Seriously, the Seahawks? I can’t wait for the epic failure.

Block like he did and catch like he did. If it were that easy every wanna be pro TE to ever suit up could play in the NFL

Sky is not falling

First of all, it will be much better to have Hue Jackson as head coach than Cable—and I liked Cable. But Cable’s ceiling was probably 8-8. “We’re not losers,” he said. But we weren’t winners either. Read what’s coming out of camp. We’re much more intense this year. That matters.

Beyond the talent, football is about attitude and energy on defense and about game planning and coaching on defense. Jackson improves both of these.

Individual talent is largely overrated, outside of the QB spot. And even serviceable QBs can win titles. Zach was a fine player, but not the player Raider fans made him out to be. And definitely not the difference between a winning and a losing season this year. Tight end just isn’t as important a position as others. And it’s a position that doesn’t have guys with phenomenal and unique skills—unless you’re talking about Gates or Gonzalez, and Zach wasn’t one of those guys.

He’s a player who can be replaced.

by RLangford on Aug 2, 2011 3:30 PM PDT reply actions

Replaced with who?

Regardless of how good you may think he is, he is an above average TE who was a key component to our excellent running game, and was a security blanket that JC often likes to go to. Considering the fact that our offensive line is a mess and our WRs really aren’t that good, I will feel bad for Campbell.

Replaced with a player like Boss

Or replaced with Myers. Look, I’m not saying this isn’t a loss. I just don’t think this is as critical a loss as you seem to.

And I don’t think the O-line is a mess in the same way you do. Much of the last two years Gallery was out. Last year after Tennessee, the line was widely viewed to be a disaster. But it didn’t turn out that way, did it?

This is not a devastating loss.

I for one am happy Al didn't sign Zack.

That is far too much and too many years for a guy who has had injury problems.
By the way, he was not a good blocker contrary to what you read on this site.
He consistently got manhandled when kept in for blocking. The experts were shocked when Miller turned down a lucrative offer from Al before the lockout, and pointed out at the time that Zack is a one dimensional tight end, good pass catcher, route runner but weak on blocking. The Raiders are now under the cap and have saved themselves from another high priced player which bodes well for the future. I agree with Al, a tight end is not a difficult position to fill, the Raiders have 3 on the roster right now. I think the Raiders saw this coming and drafted TE’s in the past two drafts.

He’s the Rich Harden of football. You can’t count on him. We had Murphy and Ford last year. Plus, Murphy kinda sucks anyway. Taiwan is a wild card. Lots of speed, could be good, but you can only dump it off to the RB so much.

After Cable took over, there was more fight in this team. You could see the difference on the field and on the sidelines. Yeah, they had some stinker games but most teams do. Turning around an attitude is much tougher than you think it is (unless you have had to do that with a team or business unit as I have then you won’t know what I’m talking about).

And if you give total credit to Hue, what about all of those games where the O was doing things we couldn’t understand/believe? He gets no criticism? He’s like Al jr. I guess. Good things are all on him but bad things must be everyone else’s fault.

Miller had injury issues as well. Does that mean we were right not to sign him. Dismissing Schillens is foolish. Dismissing Murphy is foolish.

This move bugged me.

Easy to say that TE’s are a dime a dozen or that no TE ever took a team to the SB but let’s face it, he was a pretty important cog in the machine and now we have to hope to replace it with a similar cog. Might turn out to be easy or we might end up with Ricky Dudley part 2. Good for folks to vent now. Tomorrow, we look for a TE either from within or bring in a FA. If that person sucks, the sarcasm will flow on this board but I find that kind of thing funny (when I’m not weeping about a Raider loss).

On the very bright side, as Oz and I were discussing above, if they are given enough rope, this could be one heck of a (“one heck of a” said in my best John Madden voice) coaching staff so let’s let them sort it all out and do their best to give us a winner.

still doesn't sit well, but the amount he was paid eased the pain some

and I can’t blame Zach for taking that payday. I’d venture to say TEs won’t see those kinds of dollars again for decades.

The staff is the best part, without a doubt. Instills a confidence where there isn’t always reason to have it. Believing is half the battle, I think, especially for the team, and I don’t question that Hue and company can get guys to believe in themselves, and more importantly, in their teammates.

Crump can catch the f outta the ball tho, and Gordon has struggled in camp

and brought very few catches on his resume from school. Think he’s a blocking guy, and I believe we’ll look to get someone to replace Zach, and keep developing Myers.

not saying it can't be done, but I still think Gordon was brought in as a specialty blocking TE, and Ausberry will create a mismatch lined up flank occasionally

sort of like an add’l TE lined up wide to create mismatches. Gordon is a big man, who will essentially give us almost another lineman on two TE sets, and blocking on run plays in short yardage and in the red zone. Nasty blocker.

Marcel Reece=Pro Bowl TE

He learned how to block playing some fullback last year, and we already know he has better or just as good of receiving skills as Zach Miller. Plug Reece in at fullback on certain formations but get another big FB to carry most of the blocking load. Rock Cartwright played fullback in Washington so that might work. And as far as losing Nnamdi goes, I love the guy, but I don’t plan on wearing my #21 jersey too much any more. I guarantee our defense will force a lot more interceptions now that he is gone though.

Doubt it, but he can be a Pro Bowl FB; now he can be more involved as a weapon.

His stats will get him in if he works at it.
He doesn’t seem a natural for TE, I’ve seen him play like a Running Back.

Reece played wide receiver in college

so if anything i’d say he’s more of a natural at catching the ball than blocking, and he’s got the speed Al Davis loves which makes him even more likely to be the starting tight end this year.

Let's also get one thing right here.

Zach left because the Chickenhawks – massively – overpaid for him.

We won't have 2 extra 3rds.

Maybe a 3rd (possibly even a 2nd) for Nnamdi, a 4th for Zach and a 4th/5th for Gallery.

“in addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as “compensatory picks,” are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player’s salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as “supplemental compensatory selections”).
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft."

Cap $$$$ On The Way Thursday!!!

Now this is my understanding of how/when this will take place: Someone have a better understanding please step up…
———————————————
Article 11 of the new CBA contains the rules that will allow the league to transition into the new league year, and buried among the many items within it is the following subsection:

Section 5. Salaries and Salary Cap Accounting:

….(b) Proration From Preexisting Contracts. ….(i) No signing bonus proration to the League Years of this Agreement shall apply for any Preexisting Contract that was terminated, traded or assigned via waivers prior to March 11, 2011….
-————————————————

Nam’s contact was voided as of March 4th so will apply…Also any and all outstanding "Dead $$$$ Money" from previous player contacts who are no longer with the team should also now apply…

The new league year takes effect Thursday the 4th of August and the new CBA takes effect at that time also…Therefor at that same time the Raiders will be relieved of some huge $$$$ that was "Dead $$$$ Money" counting against the Cap…

The Raiders have been relatively quiet so far saying they are waiting to free up Cap space…The "Dead Money" was believed to be $17 Mil…Than we get to add in the $3.5 Mil incentive and additional $3 Mil that can be borrowed from future years…All of which should take effect on Thursday as well…

Now that could be as much as $23.5 Mil added to the Raiders Cap Fund…

Than significant Cap space was freed up when Wimbley signed his "New" contract…How much is yet unreported but believed to be as much as $10 Mil which could than bring that figure to a high point of some $33.5 Mil…. The question is at this very late point in "FA" who the hell can we spend all that $$$$ on…

dude, I was TOTALLY wrong about Nnamdi and Zach.

I was seriously jocking both of them. Apparently, I was even more wrong about their desires to stay Raiders, which has me not as upset they’re gone now.

I’ll admit I’m a bit of a homer as well, but I don’t know what it is about Hue that inspires in me this confidence. I can go back a year ago, and not a single positive wasn’t tempered with a great deal of trepidation for Al shooting us in the foot.

It’s just in a huge way, now that both Nnamdi and Zach are gone, I can see that their losses won’t be the detriment of the entire club, and in fact, might afford a young stud or two the opportunity to start a new era of Raider football, wherein we don’t celebrate performance of players in losing efforts. I was guilty of that, too.

Call it a gut feeling, but I feel there’s a silver lining to everything that has happened so far, and it will become more evident as the season progresses. If I’m wrong about that, too, I’ll eat my words then, as well.

really don't need to panic

As awesome as Z Mills was for us, there are not only adequate replacements, but bigger positional needs. Kevin Boss and Bo Scaife are still free agents, don’t cost Miller money, and could help groom our young TE’s. OLB is still a huge question mark, and should be where we decide to use what little cap room we have. Banta-Cain and Brady Poppinga would be more than enough, while Tatupu would be a wet dream should he get moved to OLB (though i doubt we can afford him). We still could use a replacement for Chris Johnson, but the FA CB market is pretty thin at this point, although I wouldn’t be upset if we picked up William Gay or Brent Grimes. Losing Zach Miller or Nnamdi will not send us back to the “5 win season” era, as much as it may feel like it. We have an incredible depth of young talent that will take time to develop, so as much as we all would like to see the Silver and Black in the postseason, it may be a little unrealistic for this season.

I actually still see us as contenders

We lost a DB and a TE, both replaceable. In fact, not having Nam will allow teams to pass against us more. Teams abandoned the pass and just ran it on us over and over agian until they finally broke off big plays.

The Donks are a joke, the Dolts are losing players and getting older (no rivera either), and the Queefs have lost key players and their offensive coordinator. This division is wide open, and I think Hue is going to surprise a lot of people this year.

and i wouldn’t be amazed if we made the playoffs, but i would be (pleasantly) surprised if we made a deep run. We all saw how last years’ AFC West champion did in the postseason against a legitimate team…

Too Bad

Too bad Ed Reed doesn’t play for us. My point is that in a lot of games the difference between winning or losing in the NFL is only a few plays. Over simplified for sure but we lost two guys who where able/available to make good plays on a consistant basis. Feeling sorry for coach Hue. He was handed the keys to a decent car that needed a few repairs, turns parts got ripped on the street before he could even turn the ignition.

by dram5780 on Aug 2, 2011 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Glad Hue doesn't give a shit about the obstacles laid before him

you make a solid point, but Hue isn’t feeling sorry for himself, nor will he allow this team to believe for a second we can’t overcome anything or anyone we lose.

I believe this 100% when he says it:

"I share my vision with everyone in the organization," Jackson says. "We have an expectation of greatness, and we’re not gonna back down from that. We can’t hide behind excuses – the lockout, losing a player, whatever. My expectation is to win every game I coach.

"There are head coaches in this league, they don’t want that challenge. I’m not afraid of that. I’ve seen this business turn people upside down, sunny-side up and bring them to their knees. I’m gonna attack this thing."

and like that he will say he’s going to do it with whomever we field on opening day, and will instill the same belief in said personnel.

id say our corners are better then thiers

true they have ed reed though, but last few seasons he’s only been play half or 3/4 of the season. the trick is if we can produce more consistent pressure from our front four, if we can, then that with the added factor that both corners will be targeted evenly now may produce more turnovers then when nnam was here. except for 2006 when he broke out

by frank7da2tank on Aug 2, 2011 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

We are not hurting at CB

We don’t need a corner. When Nnamdi was hurt for 3 games we were 2-1. I’m not worried about his loss because my belief says that now these guys have a whole lot of pressure off of their heads. When you start across from Nnamdi you do all the work.

We need to stay the course and be looking for a coverage LB (Kirk I’m looking at you buddy) and o-line. Maybe we get creative if someone is out there AFTER we get what we need

Our front 4 is gonna be the deciding factor as far as our secondary goes. And our front 4 is pretty damn good. Pass rush is going to be everything this year.

and you've been preaching this for awhile. I hope you're right

I also think it’s possible we go with the corners we have, but my prediction was that we’d struggle before we get our legs beneath us, and it will be ugly. But the pass rush being awesome and coming even more into it’s own is a nice consolation, and could be the deciding factor after all.

Getting a cover lb like Morrison would have me feeling soooo much more confident.

Let's see Marcel Reece at TE

With DMC and Taiwan Jones split backfield for throwing downs. Bring in Bruce Campbell at TE for run blocking. Fuck Zach Miller. He’s have never made it out of shadow of Dave Casper.

Just bought me a Glock 17

Discovered shooting recently – love it and am a pretty decent shooter. My favorite though was the Kassul.454 that I shot last weekend.

by Spirals galore on Aug 2, 2011 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I am, and have always been, a shooting enthusiast. Don't own anything but a .22 rifle, but my friends all have arsenals.

and they call me “Tex”, on account of I always outshoot them with their own pieces. My two friends just each bought two and a half acre plots up by Lake Isabella (down for y’all), and we can shoot to our heart’s content up there. I prefer rifles, but like to shoot high caliber handguns as well. I prefer revolvers to cartridge loaders, and the Colt .45 to most, but my friends have some nice Rugers too. Love the .44Mag too, and my friend’s brother has a couple Desert Eagles that are just fun as hell to shoot. Not the Cali ones, either, the real .50s. fun stuff. Jaimi’s not too keen on them, but she tolerates my eccentricities.

Never shot a Kassul. Was it a gassy .454?

I've never fired a gun in my life.

When I was in Texas I walked into a pawn shop and just spent time admiring the number of guns that were for sale, just sitting there. I’d never seen anything like it.

you would have a blast on my friend's land, Screw! We spent the first couple trips just clearing trash

and demo’d the building on it down to stud, and cleared out mountains of rat shit, but not before we used it for an indoor shooting range! it was awesome! It’s like in a giant saucer shaped piece of land, so safe to fire in almost 360 degrees around so long as we’re all inside. We set up targets in the hills outside. Mostly waterjugs we fill in the creek running through the land. There’s quail all over the trails coming in and out, but wrong season. It’s almost too easy tho.

I shot at creek-filled water bottles too! We were outside.

I tried trap shooting too but suck at it yet – 1 out of four.

by Spirals galore on Aug 2, 2011 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

those metal targets are fun too. less resetting necessary.

we also had some nice junk from his junkpile that provided nice targeting. an old tv, that got stuck in the stump, and kept providing increasingly tougher shards of glass and innards to hit, until it was riddled beyond recognition. Great fun, and excellent way to vent off steam.

I’d love to shoot at TV’s! Maybe on our next trip to Oregon I could take my super old laptop and shoot the crap out of it!

some great dramatic detonations, no doubt.

the old laptop would be kinda like that office space scene, where they take their frustrations out on the fax machine too, only better.

Stupid gun control laws.

I did two months in juvie when I was 15. Got caught with sparkler bombs. We were letting one off in a garbage bin near the beach.

I don't know what a gassy .454 is, but the one I shot was a sheer pleasure

last but not least because the guy who owned it thought i’d wimp out. I love the kick! The gun I didn’t care much about was the Alaskan Ruger, because it has a short barrel and for some reason my palms got really red. But it could have been inexperience… Imagine – Sons presents me with a bb-gun for my b-day – I almost rolled my eyes then (I did, but furtively). Little did I know this was going to be my new hobby! Not ready form them bears yet though…

by Spirals galore on Aug 2, 2011 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

gassy not necessarily good. High caliber handguns should kick, but the Rugers just feel solid and make less noise

where a gassy one (refers to how much gets dispelled from the discharge, but specifically is it towards the target, or everywhere). Some of my buddies more obscure older ones, smaller caliber than a .44 I was shooting, was louder and generally discharged energy everywhere feeling like it was going to come apart. They weren’t, but I preferred the solid feel of the Rugers, and even the Desert Eagle, the highest caliber we shot, kicked, but just felt great. So long as you’re prepared for it, it should.

Maybe we’ll take in a trip to the range one time when I’m up. Still take trips to Arizona with the guy who was supposed to come to the game with me, and you can still walk in and purchase a gun there (well, he can, because he still has his AZ id.) I think they might’ve made laws even tighter since last we went, when he purchased a nice side by side double barrel shotgun.

sounds like a blast. You remember Sean, who partnered with me on the tix. He owns the arsenal

and bought the land. He’ll probably come to at least a few games with me again too. Jaimi’s coming to NE for sure, and probably another, but she’s not going to brave the Black Hole when she comes for her game! She’s gonna try to sit with a group of Pats that day (perhaps wisely!). Getting her to come with us would be awesome! Not sure we could make that happen, tho! Won’t stop us from trying!
